    Book Description

"In this fascinating exploration, [ The Shere Hite Reader] moves beyond the clichés of what pleases men and women and explores how attitudes on sex and pleasure have evolved and continue to evolve."- Booklist

"Hite's work has left an indelible mark on Western civilization."-Reuters

"Western society owes a debt to Shere Hite it can well nigh never repay."- London Telegraph

"Her famous Hite Reports have transformed the way we look at sex and sexuality."- Marie Claire

The Shere Hite Reader presents wide-ranging analysis of the individual and society from a renowned thinker on psychosexual development. The book includes new science in addition to previously published material, reflecting Hite's three decades of work probing the roots of human identity.

Hite discusses new research on female adolescence, challenging the "virgin" hymen concept and documenting the fact that sexual awakening often precedes puberty. For the first time, Hite formalizes her thinking on male adolescence-that boys feel tortured by the new social role they are forced to assume at puberty, which requires a show of superiority toward females. In new detail, Hite advances her understanding that sex is political, linking the expectation that women achieve orgasm through coitus with broader patterns of oppression. Hite also argues that pornography misrepresents male (not to mention female) sexuality, depicting it as singular and silly instead of "full of intriguing, nuanced behavior involving the entire body, not just the penis."

While Hite has published several books in Europe over the past decade, The Shere Hite Reader represents her return to print in the United States. The authoritative collection of her work, The Shere Hite Reader challenges the reader to embrace a new way of seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening view of sex, private life and gender roles.......2007-01-11

Fascinating. One of those books which women would long to show their lovers, "See Darling, you're no the only one who is frustrated by the clitoris connection to orgasm; shall I read you what it says and chill the champagne?" -- not to mention the intense relief as to the reality of most men's ineptitude and lack of interest in women's orgasm verses natural capacity / capability. (On an aside not addressed in the book, What would happen if he had to sleep in the wet spot every time SHE did not orgasm?)

Found the definition of how men have named coitus 'penetration' verses 'enfolding', vagina = sheath (named by an Italian as in 'to sheath a sword'), etc. refreshing. These are excellent examples for many of the questions Hite raises in the traditional valuation, naming and presentation of women's physiology.

Excellent research on the male point of view - both enlightening as well as daunting. Her survey excerpts are fascinating in their depth and spectrum. Reading these could be both enraging, `Another stupid question. The clitoris is on the inside of the vagina and my penis touches it when we fu_ _.' to `My girlfriend showed me where it was and what she liked. I felt honored she would trust me so.'..... How women raise their boys, son-in-laws, and nephews will greatly affect how these men-in-training address their girlfriends and lovers, children and ultimately view their societal roles.

With the [daft] preference of conservatives to maintain women's roles in the traditional light, Hite's future considerations remain paramount for all generations, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds and other persuasions.

The only downside continues to be the pervasive traditional stereotypes which can be daunting to read over a long haul. Suggest reading in topical form, which Hite presents well. WE'VE COME A LONG WAY and I look forward to a future Hite report which indicates to an even greater degree the growing and pervasive equality in relationships, sexuality, female orgasm, education and socio-economic impact.

I took part in one of her surveys after having been introduced to her via college course. Her work was required reading - no hardship to anyone!

She and her colleagues are a blessing for the earth.

I happened on this book but haven't read it. My brother's name was mentioned in the book and I would like to hear from those who might have known him and what part he played: Mebane G. Stafford, who had 3 tours in VN, retired as a Col, now deceased.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; the truth.......2002-09-06

This is the real truth about the Phoenix Program. The anti-war left has tried for years, with some success, to discredit it with disinformation. This is a well-written, accurate history of what really happened and is convincingly documented. And real -- I know, I was there (June 1968-June 1969)

    3 out of 5 stars changing attitudes.......2000-12-15

That is the title of chapter 25. Moyar tries to create the impression that loss of support for the viet cong ipso facto meant increased support for the government of South Vietnam by the peasants in the villages. I don't buy it. The peasants in many areas were fed up with the war and wanted little or nothing to do with either side. They would have been happy to have seen a coalition government that would have stopped the fighting. But the last thing in the world that Thieu would agree to was something like that. In many areas the armed viet forces on both sides reached accomodations. To some this might have looked like the Government of Vietnam was coming out on top but the people in the area knew otherwise. When Diem was in power he brought about much the same situation in the countryside where for several years he with seeming ease rounded up most of the communists, to the point where the Americans believed the communist problem was solved. But it wasn't.

5 out of 5 stars Big Thumbs Up.......2000-08-18

This book contains an unbelievable amount of facts about the Phoenix Program. The author was able to interview many participants, including Vietnamese. Since some are now dead, including William Colby, and others will be soon, this is likely to be the last history of Phoenix to draw on first hand accounts. Also very interesting was the author's use of captured Viet Cong documents, which indicate that Phoenix was highly effective. The author has a keen understanding of the people on the Vietnamese side, both participants and bystanders, which is refreshing after you read the hundreds of books in which the Vietnamese are treated as minor actors in the drama- with the possible exception of the Viet Cong. In addition, a lot of the antiwar dogma concerning Phoenix is systematically destroyed. I hope that Moyar and other historical pioneers like B.G. Burkett (Stolen Valor) and Samuel Zaffiri (Westmoreland) write some more books on Vietnam.

5 out of 5 stars An honest and accurate book about the Phoenix program.......1999-10-02

I'm glad to see someone has finally written an accurate, dispassionate account of the Phoenix program and the Vietnam war. As a Phoenix advisor in late 1967 and 1968, I can say from personal experience that Mr. Moyar gets just about everything right in his account of that period. I can only assume from the extent of his research that the rest of the information is just as correct. His descriptions of the attitudes and motivations of the Vietnamese civilians, government officials and military validate many of my own observations and confirm many of my suspicions. I just wish I had known then what I know now.

Reading this book and the reviews about it prompted me to hunt down a copy of Douglas Valentine's book about Phoenix for comparison. I shouldn't have bothered. Clearly Mr. Valentine hasn't heard that old joke about the difference between a fairy tale and a war story. Phoenix and the Birds of Prey does a much better job of presenting the facts.

If I have any criticism of Phoenix and the Birds of Prey, it is that I felt Mr. Moyar applied some of his conclusions about the Phoenix program a little too broadly to all participants. Every district operation was different in some ways depending on the tactical situation, the capabilities of the advisor, and the involvement of the Vietnamese counterparts. But I suppose that is to be expected because he is taking a broad look at the overall program.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is a serious student of the Vietnam war or guerrilla conflicts in general. It should be required reading for all of our military Special Ops people. I would especially recommend the book to all my fellow Vietnam veterans.

As for the anti-war types who have been yelling about the Phoenix program for the last 30 years, they're going to have to find a new horse to ride because that one won't run anymore.

Twenty-one months ago Robert Davidson barely escaped war-ravaged Rebelia with his life. The subsequent months of rehabilitation provided way too much time to grieve Lily Scott, a passionate journalist that refused to leave the country. As he watched, the pub where he left her was blown to bits, presumably leaving no survivors in its decimated rubble. But when Robert returns to Rebelia on a mission, he finds the woman he left behind alive. Only now she has a baby.

Scars from the past motivate Lily to provide the orphans of Rebelia all the help that she can. With a deadly dictator in power, she believes she has the knowledge to take him down. But she never intended for her son or for Robert to become pawns in her deadly game. She tries to conceal the truth of her son's paternity, along with many other secrets, in order to protect Robert. Unfortunately, fate will expose all of her secrets in a deadly game she cannot win alone.

Readers will find Linda Castillo's THE PHOENIX ENCOUNTER impossible to put down. This fast paced, complex romance has all the elements for the perfect romantic suspense: powerful characterizations, life threatening danger and fast paced plotting. Resourceful, intelligent and determined, Lily is the kind of woman that survives dangerous situations with grace. She is also believably flawed, attempting to protect those she loves from the dangerous game she plays. Robert initially blinds himself to the obvious, yet his ingenuity protects those he loves. In addition, continuities are surprisingly complex, with threads that must neatly tie to other novels, and can challenge the most seasoned authors. But Linda Castillo handles her part of the series with finesse. THE PHOENIX ENCOUNTER works well as part of the series or as a stand-alone. THE PHOENIX ENCOUNER comes very highly recommended.

    Book Description

"The Chamber of Cheesecakes has been opened. Dieter's Beware!" reads the sinister warning in this hysterical parody of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. In this farce all of your favorite Harry Potter characters, places, and past events have been twisted around with devilish wit. You'll follow the adventures of Harry Putter, Ron Cheesley, and Hermione Stranger in their sixth year at school, seventh if you count preschool. While some of the encounters are spoofs reminiscent of the original tales, others are new, keeping the storyline fresh and unpredictable. If you like the original Harry Potter series, you'll love this crazy parody.

This book is suitable for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Vietnam War?.......2006-08-15

This book is a contender for the title of "Best Book on the Vietnam War." This is not a "war story" book or a record of military fights on the battlefield. Instead, it recounts the struggles among the allies, both in Indochina and in Washington, D.C., to find and pursue a strategy. The fact that it took the U.S. so long to come to a winning strategy explains why the American Congress eventually lost enthusiasm for the war and pulled the plug just when the South Vietnamese had risen to the point of viability as an independent nation capable of self-defense against the determined enemy that controlled the people of the North.

The title of this book is questionable because it's not a good guide to the wide range of subjects treated authoritatively by the book, nor does it deal exclusively with the CIA's role as the title might suggest. It is taken from the name of the allied effort to crush the communists' war-directing apparatus among the thousands of South Vietnamese villages. That effort was intially conceived by a South Vietamese military officer who had served in the North Vietnamese military forces before becoming disillusioned with the communists' heavy-handed approach to dominion over all the nationalist groups working for independence. The author pegs his story around the history of that officer. The book's special strength is in the first-hand information obtained by the author's interviews of key actors in the key events of the war.

It is also of importance that the author picks up the story at the end of World War II. Without that background, it is difficult to put later developments into meaningful context, or to see the continuity of the French and American wars. The French had been in Indochina for over a century, and the drive to wrest independence from the French -- and, later, to maintain it in the face of well-intended but often misdirected U.S. invervention -- was fundamental to the Vietnamese motivations throughout the war.

From the Vietnamese point of view there was simply one war -- a 40-year war for independence. From the Western perspective, there was first the "French War" and then the "American War."

The major American strategic gaffes are made evident, along with the background that explains how they happened. The gaffes include America's misguided and high-handed killing of South Vietnam's president, Ngo Dinh Diem (and the author provides the evidence that U.S. Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge was instrumental in eliminating Diem and his entire government), the only South Vietnamese patriot of sufficient stature to have had a chance of rallying the moral opposition to the communists under Ho Chi Minh in the North; the introduction of American fighting forces onto a field that should have been occupied only by the contending North and South Vietnamese (and the corollary neglect of the essential political and military mobilization of the South Vietnamese); and, ultimately, the U.S.'s egregious abandonment of the South Vietnamese when the Southern people, relying on promised American military aid, had fully mobilized themselves to resist Northern aggression. The invidious role of the American media, some of whose leading representatives became involved to the point of taking sides in the strategic wrangling, is covered more explicitly and pertinently here than in most other accountings.

The author does not explore the possibility of an earlier military victory had American politics not precluded the allies cutting the enemy's supply lines into the South. That possibility, and the curious story behind it, is well told in "Laos: The Key to Failure." But the author does cover the events in Laos and Cambodia that were critical to the war in Vietnam. Indeed, for the commmunists it was all one war for control of Indochina. America's keeping the wars compartmentalized was another strategic error.

"Phoenix" nicely moves between the battlefields of Indochina and the corridors of power in Washington, D.C. And "Vietnam" cannot be understood without a grasp of that vital connection.

The four books that I would recommend for a basic grasp of the Vietnam War are 1) "A soldier Reports" by William Westmoreland (the Eagle Scout who lacked Asian experience and who had little sense of the complex political nature of the war he was fighting, but who made many crucial decisions during four critical years of the war); 2) "Lost Victory" by William Colby (who worked on Indochina longer than any other senior U.S. official, and who had a keener insight into what happened there and why; 3) "Laos: The key to Failure" by Norman Hannah (who saw the Indochina theater more strategically than most from his post in Hawaii with the Commander in Chief of the Pacific); and 4) the book here reviewed -- "Facing the Phoenix" by Zalin Grant. These four will provide an understanding of the hisorical background, the complex reasons for the U.S. taking the decisions it did, the people who played significant roles on all sides of the conflict, the mistakes that were made in pursuing American aims in Vietnam (and Southeast Asia more generally),and the strategic successes and failures of the undertaking.

The author attempts interesting 'symbolic' interpretations of some of Holbeins' more famous works in the visual context of the time. For example, Anna of Cleves' asymmetrical dress trim says "No social graces", to the initiated. One wonders why the King didn't see this if it was indeed common to include visual puns in paintings? I took issue with the author's rather silly descriptions of 16th century religious books as 'best-sellers', as if there was some sort of survey going on at the time. Otherwise, this is a very worthwhile addition to any Holbein fan's collection. It's written intelligently and attempts to place the artist in the various towns and countries with reason. And it will make you look twice at ALL the details in all the versions of a Holbein painting!

4 out of 5 stars Everything a Guide is Supposed to Be.......2006-01-12

I'm not sure what the other reviewer is griping about, or even why. The only thing I can figure is that he must work for one of the other guide publishers, and is crusading to make his brand look better or something.

I have bought and used several guides made by Prima, and they are just the same as other guides made by other publishers (Brady Games, Nintendo Power, . . .). Like every guide ever made, this one has the usual sections - plot synopsis, character and weapon overviews, strategic walkthrough, and even strategies for the co-op and multi-player arena parts of the game. Prima was even nice enough to include a graphic short-story set in the Perfect Dark universe.

So just ignore the last person that reviewed this book - it's like they were expecting the guide to play the game for them or something. To that reviewer: get real and get a life - if you don't want to put the effort into a game that's required to finish it, don't buy it; and don't blame a completely satisfactory guide for your shortcomings.

To people interested in buying this guide: this will not disappoint - whether you're looking for tips on getting through a mission you're stuck on, or just want to learn more about the weapons and characters of PDZ, this guide's got everything you could possibly need. Just don't expect it to beat the game 100% perfect for you, like that other bozo.

The worse book ever as far as a guide book goes. But what can you expect from prima? They should not be in busines. Don't buy it. You will waste your money.
