Book Description
Nearly 600 films have used Nevada as a backdrop, ranking it in the top five states used as locations. This comprehensive reference work provides information on those works in which the production company physically travelled to Nevada for primary or second-unit filming and the film received a public showing.
Arranged alphabetically by title, each entry includes technical information (year of release, MPAA rating, length), production credits, cast and crew, film genre, plot synopsis and information on the locale. Five appendices cover the topics of locations, chronological listings, motion picture awards, alternative titles, films on videocassette, and Nevada themed films.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book for Film and Western Collections.......2003-05-29
From Hollywood blockbusters to obscure, direct-to-video titles. From obvious, Las Vegas-lensed features such as _Casino_ and _Leaving Las Vegas_, to films shot in lesser-known locales, such as _The Shootist_, John Wayne's last picture, filmed in the area around Carson City, Gary DuVal's _The Nevada Filmography_ does a comprehensive job of profiling films shot in the state between 1897 and 2000. The book covers both films that used Nevada as a primary location, as well as those which shot only briefly in the state for brief sequences.
The book is arranged alphabetically by title, and each entry provides complete information on cast and crew, as well as technical information and production credits. Also included in each entry is information on the locale. There are five appendices that cover locations, chronological listings of the films in the book, awards the films received, an extensive listing of alternative titles, and films available on videocassette. There are also a number of black-and-white photos of behind the scenes moments on some of the films.
This is an interesting book, with a lot of good information and behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the films. For example, the entry for the original _Ocean's Eleven_ (1960) includes mention of the fact that Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack made the film during a two-week engagement at the Sands casino, performing at night and filming during the day: "all the Las Vegas scenes were completed during the Rat Pack's two-week engagement at the Sands, which made for very long days for the stars."
Unfortunately, not all entries are as informative. The careful attention to detail in the cast and crew information, material which could be easily researched using the Internet Movie Database, often overshadows a one-sentence mention of the locations where a film was made. And the extended anecdotes and notes are rather few and far between, reserved only for the highest profile pictures.
It is hard to gauge who the intended audience is for this book. It would most likely be of interest to Nevada libraries, for general or film reference collections. It would also be of use to any library with a comprehensive collection of film books or Western memorabilia. But the cover price probably rules it out for most general collections.

A hard-hitting look at the darker side of sports and the all-too-infrequent prosecutions of famous athletes for crimes against women.
Customer Reviews:
This is a joke.......2004-09-15
Questionable research and even more questionable conclusions. Singling out a single demographic group and making these kinds of generalizations is sickening. What about cops and crimes against women? Construction workers and crimes against women? Shameless and pathetic!
Much better than Pros and Cons.......2000-05-25
I was writing a report for one of my college writing classes about the recent off the field problems that athletes are having today. I had bought Pros and Cons and found it to be interesting and full of facts and stories. However, when I read this book, I was impressed even more. Benedict does a great job of painting the picture of how violent these knucklehead athletes can be. When the victims descibe their beatings, it sends chills up your spine. If anyone who is looking for a behind the glitter and glamour look of today's professional athlete, than they must buy this book.
This book is accurate, not misandric.......2000-02-02
There is a difference between drawing conclusions from data and the kind of misandry which the NC reader refers to. This book takes a long look at both at both numbers (types of crimes, numbers of felons) and case-study data (individual accounts from the subjects) to support a conclusion that is obvious to all thinking people: violent group behavior is connected to violent individual behavior, especially when groups of men are involved. It is not misandric to develop a hypothesis and then examine whether the data support it or nor; it is, however, irresponsible to make sloppy, defensive, ad hominem attacks on books which scare the hell out of you. This book acts as a mirror to reflect some uncomplimentary facets of male society (and male sports). Readers may not like what they see, but this book (and others by Benedict) prove that you can't just throw names at social problems like these to make them go away. As I am all too well aware, living in the heart of Buckeye country, women pay a terrible price to pay when men's sports (especialy amateur sports) are glorified, and I am thankful when books like Benedict's emerge and help define the extent of such violence nationwide.
Terribly misandristic.......2000-01-16
I was very poorly impressed by the apparent sheer misandry that shines through in this work. Negative stereotypes about males in general and athletes in specific are the foundation of this work, which I did not find to be particularly well researched. It was not helpful in the slightest to me. I was terribly disappointed.

Mastering a fighting game requires excellent reaction time, eye-hand coordination, and--of course--a guide to the various moves available to each fighter. Prima's guide to Mortal Kombat 4 wastes little time on gameplay basics (just three pages). Instead, the meat of this book lies in its outstanding fighter profiles. Each profile starts out with a convenient skill chart, allowing you to quickly determine the fighter's strengths and weaknesses. The detailed summary of each fighter's style is also helpful for planning your gameplay strategies. Finally, each of the special moves, fatalities, and combos is illustrated with multiple screen shots. The back of the book quickly summarizes Mortal Kombat 4's cheat codes and gameplay secrets. To round things out, this book also includes a full-color reference card entitled "Portable Kombat Kodes." This handy card tears out of the book and provides a quick-and-dirty list of the special moves for each fighter. --Michael Ryan

Mortal Kombat at it's... almost best........1998-08-24
Mortal Kombat Annihilation, putting the competitive context of the movie aside, is an overall average book. Since it was never said whether the book was based on the video game or the original storyline, I will have to judge it as a regular fan of Mortal Kombat in general. The plus sides were the things put into the book that were missing from the original, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion actually fighting eachother, instead of teaming up to fight off the good guys. Extra kombatants were finally added into the story, such as Jax, Cyrax, etc. Even some fatalities make appearances in the book. The minus sides, however, are almost equal to the plus sides, for example, Mortal Kombat's popularity is not as much a result of it's fighting content, but of it's controversial blood. Putting it simply, the book has no real bloodshed, taking away from the Kombat genre. Another downside was the climatic ending... I cannot go into detail on that one simply because I don't want to ruin the book for anyone. Let me just say that the ending was great, but it could have been written a little differently... I hope you have a good imagination. In closing, I have to say that Jerome Preisler is an overall average writer who has written a well-done story. This book deserves my 3 stars. May the kombat kontinue...
pretty good book.......1997-11-12
It was a good book. It didn't follow all of the elements of the games correctly, but all in all, it was pretty good.

Book Description
Cascading style sheets are one of the most important technologies on the web today, giving web developers the power to style their web sites so they are usable, lean and small in file size, look great, display consistently across most if not all web browsers, and are quick and efficient to change the look of if desired.
There are many books out there on CSS, but this one is different—it wastes less time discussing theory, and gets straight to the practical learning, giving the reader what they need to know quicker. In addition, it is bang up to date, covering the most modern CSS standards and design techniques.
As well as all the essential CSS basics, advanced techniques are covered, such as accessibility, hacks, and filters, and the book concludes with a case study, and a CSS reference section to allow the reader to look up required syntax as quickly as possible.
Customer Reviews:
A good primer - more for the novice than intermediate/advanced readers.......2007-09-21
This is one of the first books I have bought sight unseen, based on the reviews. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have more advanced information. This book is a primer. As a primer it does a good job covering the basics of CSS and how to write good code, but doen't expect to learn complete mastery of CSS from this book.
I understand CSS now!.......2007-09-14
When I bought the Sams CSS book, I was worried that I would never understand CSS, it was written poorly, etc. Then I came on here and saw that many other people who seem to know what they are talking about had the same things to say about it, and a few people recommended this book.
Am I ever glad that I checked the reviews for that book!
This is a great technical book. It's not written pretentiously, and it's not meant for a robot to read, unlike some technical books I've seen. This book was really interesting to read, and helped me to understand some of the important CSS techniques that I did not understand after reading through the other CSS book.
I am now very interested in CSS, and plan to buy another CSS book, but a more advanced book. Hopefully, I will have as much luck with that book as I have with this one! Thanks Simon Collison, for writing such an awesome book, you are my CSS hero! :D
Excelent css book.......2007-08-27
I have read this book and it's great, although I am not quite a beginner even I found this book very useful. But after You read this book and want to expand your css knowledge you should buy a CSS Mastery not like me Pro CSS Techniques. You will see that author of this book is co-author of CSS Mastery . This two books are "must" for entering css world :)
Helped me update my website.......2007-08-13
This book helped me turn my 'nothing' website into a better-organized and more attractive one. It is also a fun read!
ok, but not great.......2007-07-20
I've used a lot of "teach yourself" books in the past, and this one is not as clear as many others out there. It does a good job walking you through a lot of the technicalities of CSS, but the author flips between changing HTML code and CSS code and often times it's unclear as to which one he wants you to change. He could take a lesson from Lynda Weinman's HOT (hands on training) books. . .they're really dumbed down, but when you're stuck, being able to go back and see the step by step of even the simplest things, "open file A: now insert "x" in this exact location" is really helpful. This book left me wanting to do more exercises, read less, and wishing I had bought another book.

Like Having A Teacher Sitting Right Beside You.......2007-08-30
Beginning CSS: Cascading Style Sheets was written very clearly and the instructions were appropriate and real-world oriented. The author also included exercises at the end of each chapter that allow you to use what you just learned...like homework problems.
The fact that the book is in full color helps tremendously with comprehension of style sheets because you can easily see the changes made to a site when the sheet is altered.
The drawback: the book doesn't get into more advanced style sheets and more difficult problems designers face. I guess that's why they've written a "Professional" version of this book.
Beginning CSS 2nd Edition.......2007-08-09
I'm only halfway into Chapter 3 right now and I can definately say the 2nd edition of this book is a must have for any web developer. Having the code and screen shots in color gives it that extra zing. It's good to see the real effect in a color screenshot for those times you don't need or want to type the entire example. Having a given topic's code in color makes it so much easier to read too. This is a great feature for anyone who uses a "fancy" text editor to color code for them.
The author has also done a great job at explaining the topic in a nice "short and sweet" manner. There isn't any fluff that turns a topic into its own novel like some books I've read.
Most Excellent.......2007-07-26
I've read several books about CSS over the last three or four years, but this book has to be the most complete I've seen. Not only does Mr. York obviously know this material quite extensively, he does it in a way that makes total sense. And this book is not just for beginning web developers either, there's quite a bit of information that more experienced developers can learn about. I also liked the various code examples in color. It helps to make the specific code stand out much more when it's in a different color than the code around it. This of course helps the reader to understand and remember it more effectively.
The author also takes time to talk about the differences in browsers and how each one presents the code. There are few things more aggravating to a web developer than having to deal with the various quirks of each browser. What looks great in IE may not look so hot in Firefox or Safari. And vice versa. The author cites various examples of this throughout the book, as well as "workarounds" for each "issue."
Another thing that makes this book so enjoyable is how the author goes through step by step instructions on how to achieve a particular style. This is one way to show how styles affect presentation.
It's amazing how powerful CSS has become over the last few years. There's a lot you can do with styles and Mr York has shown all web developers ways we can take advantage of this power.
very good.......2007-07-16
the book is very interesting and helpfull i never thought that you could learn so much with a book
CSS basics.......2007-01-20
I knew nothing about Cascading Style Sheets before I bought this book. I did learn a lot and definitely use CSS in my websites now. The book is good if you read through from start to finish, which I did. But now that I want to go back and find particular pieces of information, coding examples, or little "tricks" to program what I want, it is very difficult to find what I am looking for. The book is NOT layed out as a reference. The mini coding examples are basic, to the point, and help you learn. However, the large coding example that keeps building throughout the book is not that great in my opinion. The Beginning CSS book did teach me enough to combine with JavaScript to do some cool (basic) dynamic web stuff. (If you know a little JavaScript I definitely recommend the Professional JavaScript by the same publisher!)
Now that I understand the basics of CSS I want to learn more. I looked through the Professional CSS book and definitely want to get that- that is the next book on my list to purchase. If you think you can skip over the "Beginning" CSS book then I would go straight for the "Professional" CSS.
