Today, Boris Karloff is known principally for his portrayal of the Frankenstein monster and his narration of the television special How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He was, in fact, an amazingly talented actor whose characteristic lisp never kept him from playing a great variety of parts. Author Cynthia Lindsay was a personal friend of Karloff's for more than 30 years. As she tells the story of his life, she not only brings forth the consummate professional who felt that to act was to live but also describes Karloff as an extraordinarily warm and genteel man, the antithesis of the roles he is most famous for. A full filmography and hundreds of photographs are included in this loving biography.

A tender and insightful look into a craftsman's life........1998-06-19
William Henry Pratt aka Boris Karloff was perhaps one of the most underated and illused actors in film history. Cynthia Lyndsay's book provides a most personal and loving journey into this gentleman's life. Included too in her portrait is a concise history of acting in the early 20th century as well as a detailed portrait of the actor's craft. Karloff was the consumate professional on stage and screen and off. This book is highly reccomended for any interested in the craft of acting.

Book Description
Since his death in 1969, Boris Karloff remains one of Hollywood's most famous figures. He is still revered for his talent, his many qualities that earned him admiration and respect, and, of course, his landmark role as the Monster in the 1931 movie classic Frankenstein. This biography, the result of many years of interviews and extensive research, examines Karloff the person, as well as the actor. His work (which lasted more than half a century) in films, radio, television, and the theater is covered in detail, highlighted with accounts by many who knew him and worked with him. Among the contributors are Robert Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Ray Bradbury, Julie Harris, Tony Randall, Ronald Reagan, Eli Wallach, and Jonathan Winters. With the support of the Karloff family, Gordon Shriver pays tribute to this much-loved performer who will never be forgotten.
Customer Reviews:
Karloff Biography .......2007-05-31
A beautifully written biography, the author explores with much affection the actor whose personal life was juxtaposed to "the monster" he is best known for portraying. A must-read for horror/terror fans as well as theatre/movie buffs.
A Man to Remember.......2006-09-19
This is a detailed review of the life of Boris Karloff by an author who performed a vast amount of research and who has a true fondness for the person he was writing about. The picture of Karloff presented in this book changed my perception of the man greatly. Very well done. I recommend it highly to anyone who is only vagurely familiar with Mr. Karloff and his work.
A Must For Karloff Fans.......2006-08-10
The other day I was fairly well sure I was going to be having a bad day. I had an afternoon appointment to see a medical specialist for an exam; I was on pins and needles with anxiety. (Turns out I'm fine.) But did I have a bad day? No. I had just gotten in the mail a new book that cheered me and entertained me--Gordon F. Shriver's BORIS KARLOFF: THE MAN REMEMBERED. I read it all the way through the same day I got it! The basic facts of Karloff's life won't be new to anyone who has read other bios on The King Of Horror. But Mr. Shriver has painstakingly assembled a large gathering of anecdotes and details of Boris' personal and professional life that WILL be new to fans of Karloff, and has provided as well as a few photos that won't be familiar at all to Karloff aficionados.
Any Karloff kompletist will want this next to his/her copy of Cynthia Lindsay's DEAR BORIS. (I think of them as companion volumes.) You will know Boris better. You will also get a better sense of what Evie Karloff, Boris' last wife, was like, and for that we can be grateful as well. Really--if you like classic horror films, and enjoy biography, do yourself a favor and get this book!
A Lifetime Labor of Love.......2006-02-12
Evidently, Gordon Shriver has been a big fan of one of the greatest actors (not to mention human beings, as we discover) of the 20th Century. Apart from a few too many typos and other printer's errors, this book is an easy to read and thoroughly indexed work for your movie masters' shelves. I was alternately thrilled and awed by the sheer number of people Karloff touched - professionally and personally. Gordon Shriver managed to meet or otherwise correspond with literally dozens of them; their kind and candid obseervations and charming anecdotes bring a fresh perspective to a movie star much maligned. In light of the most recent retrospective of Boris' work, shown at the Film Forum, NYC, this loving tribute will be most welcomed by karloff fans old and new everywhere.

Customer Reviews:
A Fitting Academic Study.......2003-08-04
Beverly Buehrer's book is a well written academic text on the subject. Similar to others in this series of biographies, published by Greenwood Press, the first part is devoted to a snapsnot account of the actor's life and works.
Beverly is generous in allowing the reader to draw his own conclusions on certain aspects of Boris's life, such as his birth origin or the confusion in names of the various stock companies where he is said to have performed. Often she is able to make a willing argument as to why "facts" have been jumbled and muddled along the years.
His films, stage, radio, television, and recordings are all listed in an exhaustive (for 1993 ! other accomplishments have surfaced since this book was written) index with items cross referenced.
I am a collector of Karloff, and appreciate the number of entertainment reviews she includes with each film-highlighting in particular those where Boris's name is mentioned.
Extra text and information is devoted to his major films such as the FRANKENSTEIN trilogy and the MUMMY.
There are a few editing errors scattered throughout (such as listing MAD GENIUS as Boris's final film for Warner Brothers--five more were to follow over the years) but for the average reader they are nothing of consequence. Biographers of Boris since Beverly's book, and those to come will check and cross-check their references so her mistakes will be rectified.
Although, since Scott Nollen's excellent books BORIS KARLOFF, A CRITICAL ACCOUNT... and BORIS KARLOFF, A GENTLEMAN'S LIFE, have been written, I doubt there is much more to say about the man !
I highly recommend this book for the academic minded person researching Boris Karloff. Performing Arts schools are encouraged to include this in book in their library. A fitting tribute to a very distinguished actor.
Those readers looking for a more biography-type book, may want to consult Scott Nollen's books.

Book Description
In Everybody Belongs, Dr. Arthur Shapiro discusses how negative myths and stereotypes create ingrained prejudices toward people with disabilities. This much-needed text stresses the importance of changing handicapist attitudes and developing a rationale for fostering positive ones. Popular beliefs, myths, and stereotypes are dispelled. Everybody Belongs balances theory with the practical application of ways to change negative prejudices in the classroom.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent and thorough resource.......2000-02-02
Professor Shapiro has provided a first rate addition to the disability literature in this wide ranging and very readable volume. From the need to change attitudes to the historical roots of the oppression of persons with disabilities to the unique problems of special education and many practical suggestions, Shaprio's work is impressive in scope. He has written both a textbook for the field of special education and a reference work useful to all scholars examining disability issues. This book is also a "must read" for policy makers, both in and out of education. As a graduate student in the cultural and intellectual history of disabilities, I expect to make repeated and substantial use of Shapiro's book in the years to come.
A unique, accessible book.......1999-07-21
Where has this scholar been hiding? Shapiro has written a tome on disabilities and the education of teachers and students--the book has sources, resources and is written in a way that engages the reader immediately. a must have for those involved in education
An outstanding book on a timely, important topic.......1999-02-15
Dr. Shapiro has written an excellent book on an important topic -- how to successfully promote positive attitudes toward students with disabilities.
Unless teachers and parents plan for the social as well as the physical and academic integration of students with disabilities, the concept of inclusion in regular education classes will not work. Students with disabilities will be rejected, teased, and ignored.
"Everybody Belongs" is a sensitively written, practical book for making inclusion work. Shapiro's ideas are based on years of experience and a detailed, insightful understanding of the relevant research and the history of disabilities. It is also based on a keen understanding of schools, teachers, and children.

All the help you need........1998-08-24
What can I say, this book is just simply great. If you need any help in Close Combat 2 just buy this book from this great bookstore.
Good companion to game manual.......1998-02-17
Microsoft's "Close Combat" series has been a WW II tactical wargamers dream come true. The realities and effectiveness of World War 2 armaments are surprising to most computer gamers, and thus a strategy guide such as this can be very helpful in not only teaching the fundamentals of the game, but also showing how to apply the concepts of combined armed tactics in a successful manner. Inside Move's Strategy Guide does a very good job of expanding on the concepts described in the game manual. It also has a very nice historical overview of the Market-Garden operation. Small armed tactics are fairly well defined, by outlining how the author fought each set piece battle, and what the outcome of his endeavors was. These overviews are useful if the gamer is playing the stand alone battles, but is useless if playing the operations, or campaigns modes available in the game. (In fairness to the author, he states this fact in the introduction.)
The artwork for the book was very disappointing, with some pictures so small that they are hard to visualize. The deployment illustrations are a little confusing, consisting of screen shots of the playing area, with both German and Allied units placed on the same picture. This results in severe crowding so that in some pictures the units overwrite each other, rendering them unreadable. The final insult is the color illustration on the back cover which is a screen shot FROM THE FIRST GAME - "Close Combat" and not from "Close Combat - A Bridge Too Far"! Obviously this was either a gross editing error, or was the results of a rush job to get the book out to coincide with the games release.
Bottom line is this book will make a good companion to the game manual, but will not make your trip to Arnhem any easier than it was for Monty back in 44.

Customer Reviews:
Well written, but getting old.......2006-05-09
I got this book awhile back and just got it off the shelf for a refresher. I am most interested in multicast, but it says that IGMPv3 is an internet draft and the equivalent MLD doesn't exist yet. That may have been true 4 years ago when the book was published, but things have evolved since then. I think the same is true for some other areas, such as v4/v6 interop standards. This book is a decent primer and the price isn't bad, but it's old enough I'd go with something newer. I'm shopping for a replacement myself.
Understanding IPv6.......2006-02-28
The Book was in brand new good condition. That aside, this book is not something i would recommend for IPv6. It is specific to Microsoft.
Effective Book - Not Just for Windows folks.......2005-06-18
Bottom line up front: If you are a programmer or are primarily interested in Linux, you can probably change the rating to "4 stars", simply because this book is oriented towards the Microsoft set, and is primarily focused on the features of IPv6 and networking, with no code samples.
Even so, if you are looking for a volume that covers all of the major aspects of IPv6 down to the packet level, this is a good place to start. CD-ROM includes PowerPoint slides and an "e-book" (in .chm format, sorry anti-Microsoft folks).
Basic breakdown of each chapter is to introduce a topic in generalities, and delve into specifics, offering syntax examples of commands, etc. in Windows format where appropriate.
Overall, this is a solid book. Given the shortage of "overview" style IPv6 books as of this writing, this book is a necessity (Microsofty or not) for your bookshelf if you will be implementing IPv6 any any form in the foreseeable future.
The best in this genre.......2003-12-02
I was looking for an IPV6 to deploy under LINUX and believe it or not, Mordorsoft had the only real book on the topic! The book is clear, concise and well documented; well as much as it can be consdering that IPv6 is still very much a wip.
Book Description
Stay on the cutting edge of the information technology industry by learning to understand and implement Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). If you're working or planning to work in today's information technology environment, you know the importance of staying current. Designed to keep you current, Guide to IPv6: Understanding, Analysis & Implementation explores the IPv6 protocol and how it is best employed in today's networks, including Microsoft, Linux, and Cisco. The book begins by highlighting the limitations of its predecessor, IPv4. It showcases IPv6's design objectives, and shows how they aim to overcome the limitations of IPv4, and how they will meet the needs of computer networks for decades to come. With this understanding, coverage then progresses to a detailed examination of the new protocol's base architecture, including a discussion of packet structure, addressing, and IPv6 subnetting. Armed with these core essentials, readers are presented with information on how to implement this new protocol, and finally, with an in-depth look at its migration strategies, including configured tunnels, ISATAP, Teredo, NAT46-64/PT and 6to4 tunnels.
Book Description
IPv6, Internet Protocol Version 6, is the next-generation internet protocol designed by the IETF to replace the current IPv4, now nearly 20 years old. As the new IPv6 protocol replaces IPv4, professionals need a practical and detailed reference and introduction that explains the new capabilities and changes. Especially since new and modified features and integration of additional protocols underpin IPv6, a well-organized overview becomes even vital.
Here readers find a full explanation of what they need to know to function optimally in the new environment. Based on the latest IETF meetings, Understanding IPv6 provides not only the basics but details on transition and optimization mechanisms, modifications in DNS, mobile IPv6, and security issues.
In addition, Understanding IPv6 explains each topic based on the latest IETF published documents and:
Compares IPv6 and IPv4, e.g., crucial aspects such as protocol and addressing architecture, expanded address features, modifications of DNS, and header formats.
Clarifies the many related protocols that need to be mastered in optimizing IPv6, plus core features such as neighbor discovery, address autoconfiguration, and DHCPv6.
Details internetworking mechanisms and mobility services with many examples and figures.
Devotes full coverage to transition mechanisms, especially Teredo.
Understanding IPv6 is a reference work for graduate level students, communications engineers and researchers.
Customer Reviews:
more complex, but necessary.......2005-08-06
Mun offers a detailed comparison of IPv4 [the current Internet] to the proposed IPv6. The shortcomings of v4 are explained. Notably of course is the limited addressing space of 32 bits. But also the lack of an inherent Quality of Service. v6 fixes both defects.
Attention should be paid to the migration details. A very practical matter, since there needs to be as seamless a transition as possible. The average user should not be burdened. And the sysadmin as little as possible. It may well be that legacy v4 code and addressing will be with us for a long time.
Yes, v6 is clearly more complex. But if nothing else, v4 is running out of addresses.
