    Book Description

This lively Companion is a collection of critical and historical essays on the films adapted from, and inspired by, Shakespeare's plays. Leading scholars discuss Shakespearean films from a variety of perspectives--as works of art in their own right, as products of the international movie industry, in relation to cinematic and theatrical genres, and as the work of particular directors from Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles to Franco Zeffirelli and Kenneth Branagh. The volume includes strong coverage of adaptations of Hamlet, Richard III, Macbeth, King Lear and Romeo and Juliet.

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight introduction to Shakespeare on Film.......2001-03-02

If you don't know anything much at all about Shakespeare and film and if you like criticism that is almost pure description with little argument or analysis to weight you down, then you'll probably like this book. For scholars in the field, however, the book will be a major disappointment.

      Book Description

This unique volume presents a comprehensive reference guide to directors who have worked in the British and Irish film industries between 1895 and 2005. Each of its 980 entries on individual directors, from Rodney Ackland to Fred Zinneman, gives a resumé of the director's career, evaluates their achievements, and provides a guide to source material and a complete filmography. Engaging with the entire history of British and Irish cinema, the book encompasses filmmakers from Charles Chaplin to Lynne Ramsay, directors who worked in mainstream cinema and those who worked in the independent sector; those who are associated with the heyday of British cinema--Asquith, Powell and Pressburger, Mackendrick and Korda--or with the heady years of the 60s and 70s--Ken Russell, Nic Roeg, Derek Jarman, and Stanley Kubrick--as well as addressing contemporary filmmakers such as Nick Broomfield, Mike Figgis, Antonia Bird, and Anthony Minghella. The book is packed with fascinating facts, critical summaries and invaluable contextualizing details.

        Book Description

This Companion offers a multi-disciplinary approach to literature on film and television. Writers are drawn from different backgrounds to consider broad topics, such as the issue of adaptation from novels and plays to the screen, canonical and popular literature, fantasy, genre and adaptations for children. There are also case studies, such as Shakespeare, Jane Austen, the nineteenth-century novel and modernism, which allow the reader to place adaptations of the work of writers within a wider context. An interview with Andrew Davies, whose work includes Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Bleak House (2005), reveals the practical choices and challenges that face the professional writer and adaptor. The Companion as a whole provides an extensive survey of an increasingly popular field of study.

          Book Description

Public Spaces, Private Lives argues for a new language of engaged hope, political action, and democratic public participation. In an era when Americans regard politicians and government cynically, this book challenges the assumption that politics is dead--and shows why and how citizens must claim a revitalized role in American public and democratic institutions.

4 out of 5 stars Democracy and the Knowledge of the Masses.......2003-09-22

In this latest cultural manifesto, Giroux analyzes how the current political focus on market-driven privileges and the elimination of everything "public" is affecting the education and culture of the masses. The result is a culture of cynicism in which the majority of people who are not included in the conservative elite are entrenched in public apathy, and disillusionment with a system that promises to do absolutely nothing for them. Giroux's recommendation for alleviating this social disaster is his specific field of "cultural pedagogy," as espoused in his generally dense uber-academic writing style. In layman's terms, we should refocus education of the public to include a greater emphasis on cultural and social knowledge, so people have stronger tools for making themselves part of the political system once again.

Key insights here include the contention in Chapter 5 that modern conservatism (in politics) and neo-liberalism (in economics) are pushing a utopian vision of perfect and efficient markets, which is an ideology as extreme and as divorced from reality as fascism or communism, and may prove to be just as destructive. Also, throughout the book and especially in Chapter 4, Giroux uncovers the elitism in right-wing attacks on education and media and how they are meant to exclude the non-elite masses from social power.

However, things take a major wrong turn in Chapter 3 as Giroux analyzes the film "Fight Club." This is a typically verbose academic over-analysis with an overload of obscure theories, tying the film in to huge social and political trends, then criticizing it for not discussing (and condemning) other huge trends and cultural effects. Giroux forgets that a film is a visual medium based on entertainment in addition to advancing ideas, and 90 minutes of audio/video is not sufficient for vast analyses such as Giroux's densely written academic thesis. Meanwhile, the book consists of five essays that were apparently written originally for different academic journals. This leads to a large amount of repetition throughout the book as Giroux makes the same statements (especially with introductory background and observations) for different audiences. But once you get past those problems, this is a very enlightening and insightful look at the dire trends in public society and how it could be destroyed by the current crush of private ideologies. [~doomsdayer520~]

1 out of 5 stars Surface View of Fight Club.......2002-09-30

I bought this book for once reason- to read the analysis of Figh Club in it, as it's one of my favorite works and I enjoy reading criticism of it. Giroux's take on the film was so basic and surface it was an utter waste of my time and money. At least "The Cinema of Generation X" by Peter Hanson had more substance to it.

5 out of 5 stars Another Tour de Force by Giroux.......2002-01-24

This book marks a new watershed in his trademark theorizing of schools and society. Taking on corporate-produced cynicism he draws on several important theorists to articulate a viable oppositional pedagogy. An absolute must read.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Tremendous Insight -- Essential Reading.......2002-01-22

Giroux's new book makes a major intervention in contemporary social thought as well as the field of education. Part of what makes the book so important is that it demonstates how a culture of cynicism about politics is produced largely by corporate media -- that is, how citizens are schooled into inaction and hopelessness by people and institutions who stand to benefit financially by doing so. But the book doesn't stop with social criticism. It suggests ways that teaching and other forms of culture work can reinvigorate the political scene and civic life to expand democratic participation. The book is even more important since 9-11 as we turn on the TV and learn that questioning foreign and domestic policy is un-American and that the way to be patriotic is to give public wealth to big corporations. Giroux's book shows how culture and money are central to the way power is wielded. Yet is a hopeful, inspiring, and even patriotic call for a critical and engaged citizenship and a shift of power to people.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant analysis of pressing social issues.......2002-01-22

Henry Giroux ressurects once again the vitality of dissent and its ability to pave the road of possibility. In this new book, Giroux provides a trenchant critique of neoliberalism's capacity to construct as common sense the need to dismantle all things public in the name of freedom. But as he shows, freedom in this context is not tied to social responsibility, but rather exists to atomize people, creating private lives that are often on public display, but nevertheless fail to become public concerns. As a teacher-educator, I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about the conflation of democracy and capitalism and its devastating effects on our sense of public values and social concerns. Giroux, once again, situates himself as an insurgent public intellectual in the tradition of Marcuse and Baldwin.

            Book Description

New York City is home to some of the most recognizable places in the world. As familiar as the sight of New Year’s Eve in Times Square or a protest in front of City Hall may be to us, do we understand who controls what happens there? Kristine Miller delves into six of New York’s most important public spaces to trace how design influences their complicated lives.

Miller chronicles controversies in the histories of New York locations including Times Square, Trump Tower, the IBM Atrium, and Sony Plaza. The story of each location reveals that public space is not a concrete or fixed reality, but rather a constantly changing situation open to the forces of law, corporations, bureaucracy, and government. The qualities of public spaces we consider essential, including accessibility, public ownership, and ties to democratic life, are, at best, temporary conditions and often completely absent.

Design is, in Miller’s view, complicit in regulation of public spaces in New York City to exclude undesirables, restrict activities, and privilege commercial interests, and in this work she shows how design can reactivate public space and public life.

Kristine F. Miller is associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Minnesota.

The results of a 15-month study, begun in December 1979, on the homeless in New York City, Private Lives/Public Spaces caused a sensation when it was released in 1981. The report deals primarily with the contemporary causes of homelessness, the conditions and operational procedures of public and private shelters, and strategies of survival on the streets. It was the first major study on homelessness in New York City and galvanized efforts to deal with the situation.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Adventure For The Novice Players.......2006-07-04

"Queen's Harvest" is an introductory adventure for beginning players. It is the second of two linked adventures, B11 "King's Festival" being the other. However, these modules are only loosely connected so you don't need both to play either.

This module consists of two adventures that are not linked by the plot line. A benevolent friend, Kaerin, invites the PCs over for a visit and then asks them to do a couple favors for him. In the first adventure, the PCs are asked to search the dungeon of a dead wizard named Kavorquian (a pun on Jack "Kavorkian"). This is the typical search-n-retrieve type adventure. The second scenario involves the PCs having to assault a keep full of nasty monsters. An insane queen named Ilyana rules the keep and possesses a magic sword that controls goblins and hobgoblins.

Since this is a beginning module designed to teach a DM how to run a successful adventure, there are a number of useful "DMs tips" sections, and comes with pre-generated characters and a pull-out map.

"Queen's Harvest" is a no-frills, straightforward adventure with little plot. The "adventure hooks" (a "hook" is the contrivance used to get players involved in the adventure) employed are slightly overused, but this is only a slight annoyance. What is good, are the DM tips. This is especially true in the keep adventure where the DM is suggested to have its inhabitants react intelligently to the actions of the PCs and not to simply leave it a static dungeon with monsters simply standing in rooms waiting around to be slaughtered.

4 out of 5 stars Two Good Written Adventures.......2002-06-04

The module can be played as a sequel to B11, or stand-alone. The two adventures, though simple, are good written and well fitted your Mystara Campaign. It is suitable for first time or second time players. Similar with B11, the original printed copy is quite rare now.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2000-07-21

Queen's Harvest is probably the best introductory module ever produced for the now obsolete Basic D&D system. It contains two cleverly written, good-sized adventures with interesting situations and NPCs that can easily jumpstart a whole campaign. The whole module easily converts to 2nd Ed AD&D or 3E D&D and also includes some interesting pre-rolled first level characters. Although it is designed for 4-6 characters levels 1-3, I've found that it works great as a stand-alone adventure to throw at a single 4th or 5th level character or two 3rd level characters.

4 out of 5 stars Great adventure for first-time players.......2000-04-30

One of the finest and rarest adventures for Basic D&D! It's so much fun to play through that I've begun many AD&D campaigns here (the conversion is simple). The mage Kavorquian (hehe!) has fallen, and his legacy must be recovered from his mysterious stronghold, and bequeathed to the rightful heir. Easy, right? If you only knew... ;) Can be used as the sequel to B11, or by itself, for levels 1-3.

This is the definitive biography of BritainÂ's greatest monarch, who “was hailed at once as the mother of her people and as the embodied symbol of their imperial greatness.” “One of the surpassingly beautiful prose achievements of our time” (Chicago Daily News). The death of the Prince Consort was the central turning-point in the history of Queen Victoria. She herself felt that her true life had ceased with her husband's, and that the remainder of her days upon earth was of a twilight nature--an epilogue to a drama that was done. Nor is it possible that her biographer should escape a similar impression. For him, too, there is a darkness over the latter half of that long career.

lytton strachey is my favorite non-fiction writer. he writes non-fiction that is flawless and beautiful. some of the writing in this book is as good as any writing i've seen anywhere. but who cares? who cares? what a shameful culture has been fashioned that has no room for this.

                      4 out of 5 stars Pioneering biography.......2003-06-21

This life of Queen Victoria set a new standard for biographies when it was written and it still reads very well today. To the modern ear some of Strachey's language may at times be a bit dry. That aside this is an excellent study of the development of Victoria from infancy to old age. The entanglement's of family and the influence of key ministers is well covered and documented . Especially interesting is the treatment of Prince Albert and the Queen's relationship.
I found this to be quite an informative book and would highly recommend it to anyone with a curiosity regarding this period of British history.

I purchased this book at a library sale and it has no copywrit date other then the 1921 date published by Harcourt, Grace & World,Inc and renewed by Jame Strachey, with no renewal date. The copy I have has 434 pages which include an index of subject matter. The only other used books mentioned for sale have a copywrit of 1981 and have 100 less pages. This book is in very good condition and has the original cover jacket. It begins its historic tale in 1817 and includes footnotes at the bottom of the page.

strachey became famous for his 'eminent victorians' which has the reputation for being a hatchet job-but he was looking at the previous generation from the disillusioned, post-WWI perspective, and he treats florence nightingale et al more like prodigies than monsters. when he undertook to write about the eponymous queen herself, people expected it would be another exercise in target practice-even his mother tried to discourage him, saying that 'if she was stupid, it was not her fault.' But in the event what he produced is one of the most sympathetic, if slightly condescending, biographies ever written-and absolutely one of the most accomplished. it is a chronicle of victoria's 60+-year-long political career and emotional life, a series of portraits of all the personalities in her life-including albert, his curious replacement john brown, disraeli-him, it is true, strachey clearly did not like-a completely non-pedantic reflection on the growth and eventual shrinkage of the british empire during her reign-and the whole thing is done so subtly, so gracefully-and, at the same time, so forcefully-that you may find yourself talking about nothing else but this book and queen victoria for days afterward. one of the most successful marriages of rigorous scholarship and beautiful style in english literature.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting portrait of a queen.......2000-08-04

A readable and fairly brief account of Victoria. Frequent passages from Victoria's girlhood diary and letters make Victoria's early life particularly vivid reading. Also fascinating is Victoria's relationship with her government, and her tendency to cling to the current prime minister and despise the Opposition, whoever they might be.

The enigmatic Prince Albert, and his evolving relationship with Victoria, is presented well. Strachey makes some startling suggestions about what Britain might have turned into, had Albert lived longer (answer: Prussia).

This book is elegantly written, and free of the psychobabble one might expect from a more modern book.

The book is not boring. Although Victoria is always proper, there is plenty of adultery and dysfunctional family behavior among her many adult children.

Edney tackles quite a broad topic, but does well with remaining focused and developing the topic from a novice understanding of wireless security to in-depth discussions down to the packet level. With the range of the topic, the book could have easily been written *only* for the novice or specifially for the computer professional, but Edney manages to hit both audiences; not a small feat when writing a computer-related book.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding why wi-fi networks are vulnerable (more so than traditional wired networks) and in learning more about wi-fi security solutions.

                        Hello,

I am reading this book and it is helping me a lot with my certification towards the CWNA, the material is very good, explanations are clear and the author has a very easy way to control the reader and explain the things that are sometimes hard to see. This book is a very good reading, i would suggest for whoever is starting on Security to read it, it even makes some humoristics comments during the book. Awesome, 5 stars material !
                        thanks a lot,

The author really knows what he is talking about. The layout of content shows his strong logical reasoning. He answers almost all questions a curious engineer would have.

                        5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2006-04-08

Outstanding book, not just for wireless security but for encryption in general. Very clear explanations, chapter on why WEP failed is the best explanation I have read. Also very clear on how EAP, TLS, TKIP, WAP and the rest of the protocol soup relate to each other. I even appreciated the attempts at humor - my style, a bit dry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent balance of technical detail and general overview.......2005-10-26

This book covers many major protocols. It provides background requirements to each of those protocols (this is important for understanding the big picture of 802.11 networking - otherwise you would be left with puzzle pieces of information).

The author creates a lucid description of the flaws of WEP encryption. I have read many websites and lesser books about the flaws of WEP. Now I finally understand those flaws.
That chapter, Chapter 6 How 802.11 Works and Why It Doesn't, is akin to J.R.R. Tolkiens chapter on the mines of Moria. Both use verbiage and flow that take the reader upon a journey. Wherein the reader and the book become one united thinking entity. It removes the reader's presence without moving the reader and upon return the reader know's it has been there).

This book isn't only about WEP. It covers [probably] every protocol, vulnerability, of 802.11 and rounds it out with some misc stuff in Part III (see TOC for listing).

Well written. This book actually is not a stuggle to read. (though I have only read chapters 3-9 and skimmed chapters 1-2). I even enjoy reading it before going to sleep. This goes back to the title of my review. Good balance of general overview and detailed technical information. Or better yet, a good buildup of general overview then followed by a detailed technical description of the topic.

I would recommend for intermediate to expert networking folks (devs, testers, project mgrs, admins).
