    Book Description

Take One's Essential Guide to Canadian Film is the most exhaustive and up-to-date reference book on Canadian film and filmmakers, combining 700 reviews and biographical listings with a detailed chronology of major events in Canadian film and television history. Compiled by Wyndham Wise, the editor and publisher of Take One, Canada's most respected film magazine, with a foreword by Canadian director Patricia Rozema, this is the only reference book of its kind published in English.

Each film title is listed with credits, a mini review, and significant awards. Biographical listings of directors, producers, actors, writers, animators, cinematographers, distributors, exhibitors, and independent filmmakers are accompanied by date and place of birth, date of death if applicable, a brief career overview, and a filmography. Wise celebrates Canadian achievement on both a national and an international scale, and juxtaposes the distinctly Canadian with Canada's exports to Hollywood: Maury Chaykin and Jim Carrey, John Candy and William Shatner, Mon Oncle Antoine and Porky's, Highway 61 and Meatballs, The Red Violin and The Art of War.

From great early Hollywood stars like Walter Huston, Fay Wray, Mary Pickford, Norma Shearer, and Marie Dressler, to our current crop of star directors - including Patricia Rozema, Atom Egoyan, David Cronenberg, Denys Arcand, Peter Mettler, Guy Maddin, and Robert Lepage - Canadians have made an important but largely unrecorded contribution to the history of world cinema. Impressive for its breadth of coverage, refreshing in its opinionated informality, this comprehensive and lively look at Canadian film culture at the start of the twenty-first century admirably fills the gap.

5 out of 5 stars Cultural criticism at its global/local wry perverse best..........2000-05-09

Meaghan Morris, early and late, writes cultural criticism at its global/local,wry perverse best. Lest this sound too late-capitalist cynical or rude, I should say that she writes from and as the local and national site of Australia, making this political and libidinal space of transnational cultural studies resonate with the most urgent, critical, and international issues that trouble our politics and poetics.

As such, she reinvents Asia/Pacific as she writes, showing us (or should I say the writerly obsessive "me") how to work and affiliate in a space of writing and moral-political concern. When I read her essays, I face the panic white sublimity of awe and admiration, clotted and displaced. She invents topics and tropes for each essay or book, reframing tourism, mass media, film, movement, embodied location, identity, without falling into the "banality of cultural studies" or the throwaway language and motel spaces that haunt our politics.

She is an untimely critic, whose writing is both too soon and too late for the market. But the "tyranny of space" in the Pacific has been overcome, and I for one am very grateful such an artist and cultural critic and scholar exists all packed into one person, Meaghan Morris.

The book that changed the way computer books are written and marketed has come out in a third edition. By and large, it's the same as the previous edition (advances in MS-DOS have not been numerous), but there is some new information here. Further, DOS for Dummies remains an entertaining book and if you use DOS, it's the book you want to assist you.

The basic idea of this book is that you can identify a problem you're having with your computer, ranging from how to turn the thing on to how to back up only the files that have changed since the last backup. You can then turn to the relevant section--the table of contents is very detailed--read a few pages, carry out some procedure, and move on to the next problem. You'll find sections on hardware, file management, text editing, and software installation. Later chapters deal with troubleshooting.

The newest material in this release of DOS for Dummies deals with DOS 6.22 and the DOS-like shell that you can use under Windows 95 and Windows 98. For users of the latest versions of Windows, Gookin demonstrates some relevant procedures. But most of the coverage deals with DOS itself and programs that are designed to run under DOS. There's even stuff about WordStar here (it's a little-known fact of history that the Rosetta stone was written with WordStar).

DOS for Dummies is funny, too, in a wry sort of way. What kind of joke is appropriate to a section about parallel ports, anyway? The author manages to infuse practically every passage with humor. Other computer books should make an effort to take themselves less seriously. The verdict: if you're using DOS--and more of you are than the Windows people would have us believe--this book will provide you with valuable help. --David Wall

                      Book Description

Windows may rule the world of popular computing on PCs around the globe, but DOS still has a place in the hearts and minds of computer users who vaguely remember what a C prompt looks like. Even if DOS (with all its arcane commands and its drab, boring look) isn't your idea of the best way to get things done on a PC, you'll find plenty of fast and friendly help on hand with the third edition of DOS For Dummies.

Here's a plain-speaking reference guide to all the command-line stuff and nonsense that makes DOS work, whether you're a native DOS user or are an occasional dabbler who needs the operating system to run all those cool games under Windows.

DOS For Dummies, 3rd Edition, avoids all the technical jargon to cut to the heart of things with clear, easy-to-understand explanations and step-by-step help for

All the basic DOS commands, from APPEND to XCOPY, are demystified to make life in DOS much more bearable. This handy guide has plenty of helpful tips and tricks for bending DOS to your will, without having to dedicate your life (and all your free time) to mastering this little corner of the PC.

Author Dan Gookin's first edition of DOS For Dummies became an international best-seller. He considers himself a computer "guru" whose job it is to remind everyone that computers are not to be taken too seriously. His approach to computers is light and humorous, yet very informative. Gookin mixes his knowledge of computers with a unique, dry sense of humor that keeps you informed – and awake.

                      5 out of 5 stars It's A Dummie (What's more to say) .......2007-08-18

Dummies books are written for the rest of us. On the DOS side of things. This book is a reference without spending a lot of money and without all the mumbo-jumbo. Just the stuff you need without the technical words. I have other Dummies computer books and ther great as well. Well worth the price.

I went to school for this sort of thing. I keep Dummies books handy for a quick reference. When I get a phone call 9 times out of 10 I'm reading a dummies book. With that said this and other Dummies books are great.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.......2007-04-24

Do you have a friend that knows DOS, or an IT professional that is willing to teach you? Either way, do not buy this book, because if it may be useful to you he tells you to ask a friend or a professional. He is painfully not humorous or clever either, though he thinks he is.
You will learn more Google-ing DOS than you will from this book... which is not saying much. Look into Peter Norton's Complete Guide to DOS 6.22 if you want to know how to use DOS and or write batch files.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-08-13

Not so long ago most people did not know how to use a computer. Dan Gookin's "DOS for Dummies" stepped us through the hills and vales of how to use one. For this alone the book deserves respect.

A very short while ago, a computer professional said to me, "For that I generally go to DOS and use 'XCOPY'." Anyone remember what that means? "DOS for Dummies" will tell you.

1 out of 5 stars Every Page Another Stupid Joke.......2005-03-31

The concept in the "...for Dummies" series is to write in a friendly style and give the reader some substantial information along the way. What you get in this waste of paper is tons of useless unfunny attempts at humor with some passing references to DOS along the way.

Most of his book is just padding, and you get maybe one useful sentence per page. After reading it for awhile, I started to notice the phrase, "go talk to an expert to get this done..." popping up again and again. Well... I buy a how-to book in order to learn something new. I already know that I can pay to have an expert do just about anything for me. The writer telling me to just "go consult an expert" defeats the reason for buying a how-to book.

Save your money and buy something else.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners..........2004-07-06

This book was great, but it needed to have more advanced stuff. Heck, I already knew about 68% of the book!

The author seems to assume you already know something about DOS. He doesn't completely cover the basics you need to start with before you start entering commands in the MS-DOS prompt; for example, the command to change the directory is in the regular reference section rather than at the start of the book where you need it. And he just decided to not cover a few commands, like "debug". So it's not quite for "dummies", really, and it's not complete either. Lastly, we're referred to yet another book called "DOS for Dummies" rather than him explaining fully? What's up with that?

Don't get me wrong - it's still quite useful for people who already know a few basics and want to know more. But it's not well explained enough at the start for someone who's never dealt with DOS and someone who wants to really know DOS is going to have to find and buy another book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Dummies.......2000-04-04

This book will really help you learn DOS commands. The DOS commands are very easy to look up in this book. This book gives simple and right to the point explanations of each command. I highly recommend this book for anyone who uses DOS.
