5 out of 5 stars An absolute classic!.......2005-01-18

A phenomenal story -- even for those who don't particularly care for the sci-fi kind of fantasy romance. I found this book ten years ago, and like the other reviewer, I've never forgotten it. I was actually able to find it on this website because I still remembered the names of the characters! You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars This book and the rest of the series was incredibly great........1999-10-15

I first picked up the first book of the series when I was in High school and after that I had to read the rest of the series. This book has been on my mind ever since then. The story line was tragic and torture yet I could not put it down. The emotions that Varian felt, when he posed as Ryker, was vivid and wonderfully expressive. The love between Varian Saar and Jana Greyson seemed ill fated in the beginning of the book because of Jana's rejection of Varian and her acceptance of Ryker, but in the end their love did triumph even after the revealation of Varian's deception. This book sent my emotions into limbo because I could feel what the characters felt.I can't convey my enthusiasm without degrading the book. You readers just have to read it for yourself. One final word about this book- orgasmic.

LAKOTA WINDS - For the Oglala Lakotas, "to dance with the wind" means to live in freedom, soaring on its awesome currents as a man above men. As the oldest son of Chief Rising Bear, Wind Dancer knows one day he will shoulder the responsibility for his tribe. Wind Dancer has faith that all is as it should be until his wife and young son are slaughtered by the Crow tribe. Embittered and lonely, Wind Dancer is intent only on his duty to his people. Yet he never imagines that duty will force him to take another woman into his life - and into his heart. When Wind Dancer first sees Chumani, he is amused by the sight of this woman who dresses and hunts as a man. But after hearing that she, too, has lost her husband and child to the Crow, he has respect for the courageous and beautiful warrior. Seeking revenge for her loved ones, Chumani rides against her enemies, exhilarating in the thrill of the battle that makes her forget the pain she suffers. She vows never again to marry, hoping she can protect herself from further anguish. But when a respected medicine man sees their union in a sacred vision, both Chumani and Wind Dancer know the alliance will make their tribes strong.

DEFIANT HEARTS - As the civil war divides a nation, a man and a woman--enemies and lovers who can neither trust nor resist each other--seek their detiny in the shadow of passion, treachery, and betrayal

TAKING CHANCES - Kirstin Lowrey, a 45-year-old widow recently diagnosed with adult-onset diabetes, is driving from Georgia to California to work as a medical research technician. When hypoglycemia causes her to become disoriented, she crashes her car and is rushed to the ranch of Christopher Harrison, a former surgeon now running a part-time general practice in rural New Mexico. While checking Kirstin over, Chris proclaims her figure "topnotch" and, not coincidentally, offers her accommodations at his ranch for a few days while she gets her blood sugar under control. Kirstin, who senses an opportunity for "a little innocent hanky panky," accepts. When they're not discussing diabetes, sizing each other up sexually and speculating on a possible relationship, Kirstin whines about her late husband (who didn't appreciate her and was mysteriously squirreling away part of his income) and Chris laments about the high-powered career he lost (in an incident that strains credulity to the breaking point).

WILD IS MY LOVE - Princess Alysa is trying to maintain harmony and peace within her kingdom and it is an uphill battle. Along the way, Princess Alysa and a prince from a different kingdom meet and fall hopelessly in love. Together they fight the evil forces that are trying to take absolute control of her domain. The detailed storyline includes kings, princesses, princes, servants, bandits and witches. The scenarios include intrigue, greed, death and the struggles of good, love and power.

STARDUST AND SHADOWS - Alldera leads a band of free fems back to Holdfast to conquer her male former masters. She finds that most of the men have killed off one another and that the greatest enemy she now faces is dissension among her fellow fems. Alldera must now learn how to apply her skills to secure a new and just future for both genders. Sequel to "Walk to the End of the World" and "Motherlines".

ANYTHING FOR LOVE - Rachel Gaines has been a widow for fifteen years and, at forty-seven, is tired of doing charity work and attending ladies' luncheons. Her chance for a change of pace comes at a class reunion. There she again meets Quentin Rawls, whom she cut out of her life more than twelve years earlier.

    Book Description

"You'll like Louis Mayer," Mary Pickford told Charles Foster in 1943. "He is from Canada, too." As Foster was soon to discover, Mayer was not alone: a great many of those who helped shape Hollywood into the movie capital of the world were Canadian. Stardust and Shadows brings together the stories of eighteen Canadians who were celebrities during Hollywood's formative years. Most of those profiled were known to Foster, and stories they told him about Hollywood's early days, enhanced by many years of research and interviews with other living performers and directors from the silent movie era, reveal a never-before-seen look at what the movie industry was really like in those early days. This is Canadian history that has never been told, and many of the startling stories and secrets of Hollywood's past are revealed here for the first time. Celebrities profiled: May Irwin, Al and Charles Christie, Joe and Sam De Grasse, Marie Dressler, Allan Dwan, Florence La Badie, Florence Lawrence, Del Lord, Louis B. Mayer, Sidney Olcott, Jack Pickford, Mary Pickford, Marie Prevost, Mack Sennett, Douglas Shearer, Norma Shearer.

4 out of 5 stars Charlie... I TOLD YOU PEOPLE WOULD BUY IT........2004-04-29

If you want to know about old Hollywood and how Canadians figured in to it... This book is for you!

I met Charlie Foster in Moncton N.B. a few years ago. He and his lovely wife had come out to see me and my partner at the time, perform a Comedy show at a local club. He enjoyed the act and told us that it reminded him of Old English Music Hall and his youth in Hollywood.

We went back to his home where he would regale us with stories of Hollywood days gone by. All his name-dropping had me suspicious of these tales of being on the set of the Beverly Hillbillies, the movie Spartacus, and all the people he met and interviewed. He then showed me some pictures of him with some Hollywood folk... I was convinced that he was on the up and up.. I said Charlie you should write a book... he said no one would want to read about it... Well Charlie, I guess you were wrong, and I'm glad. It's okay to be wrong.

This book was a wonderful read. I found a couple of spots in the book a bit repetitive, but I have no right to be critical... who real does?

Buy this book. You'll learn a lot about Hollywood of old and you'll have fun doing it. Charlie Foster won't let you down.

1 out of 5 stars Hollywood Babylon revisited.......2002-11-16

I thought that the subject of this book was interesting, and a book which explores it long overdue. Always cautious, I decided to get it from my university library before buying it. I am so glad I didn't waste my money on it. This book has good intentions but is full of unsubstantiated rumors-there are no source listings, there is no bibliography. The author bases his "information" on 60 year old meetings, and the readers are supposed to believe that his famous subjects revealed (to someone they just met) their deepest, darkest secrets. Did it happen? Perhaps, but I'd like to see some proof, any proof, for some of his wilder rumors. This is okay if you want a light, quick read - but for those with a serious interest in film history or who are looking for a scholarly discussion of the subject, look somewhere else. If you are interested in unsubstantiated rumors-this is just the read for you.

5 out of 5 stars Good old "Unc"!!.......2002-03-14

As a "foreigner" I thought that I might find it hard going.
No! I was pleasantly surprised when I actually got started. To be very honest, it`s one of those books you pick up and then have great difficulty putting down again, my good wife Linda will testify to that fact.
Some years ago I had a very brief preview and even then I knew it would be worth reading in it`s complete form. Uncle "Baz", as he is affectionately known, has certainly come up with a winner.
The book gave me an enlightened view of what it must have been like in the "good old days", extremely entertaining.
    Well done!
I can`t wait for the next one.I know it will be even better and that`s not because we`re family, it`s because I have an idea of what`s coming, I`ve seen the draft copy already.
    Thanks for the enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Taylor Murder Finally Solved.......2000-09-30

Can it be true? The unsolved 1922 murder of director William Desmond Taylor is really solved! Charles Foster, writer of this intriguing book about the silent era and its stars claims to have heard a confession, with others present, by the killer. I won't spoil your fun by telling you the murderer's name, but Foster has convinced me the murder is now solved. But there is much more in this remarkable book from a writer who met and befriended many directors, stars an technicians in Hollywood in 1943.Want to know why W.C. Fields enjoyed being hit in the face by a pie thrown by Three Stooges director Del Lord? Or why an actor named Sam De Grasse got a lifetime contract with Douglas Fairbanks as both actor and dentist? I consider myself an avid silent movie buff but have learned more fascinating things in this wonderful book than I learned in a lifetime elsewhere. The book moves from silents to early sound and reveals a lot of heartbreak and a lot of triumph. A totally readable book. I sat up to 3 a.m. finishing my copy and regretted reaching the final page. This is a must book for every movie enthusiast who wants to know the truth about early Hollywood. This is an interesting book if you want to learn more about modern society and the importance and value we place upon popular culture. Anyone who is a fan of Dilbert should be especially interested in this book's perspective on the relationship between Dilert and its followers. As a university student studying communications and its relationship to our society, I found this book to be a useful and relevant resource to further my understanding of these areas. I would recomend this book to anyone interested in pop-culture and related fields.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but don't trust the Batsford edition. .......2004-08-18

'My 60 Memorable Games' is a fantastic collection from one of the great players in the history of chess. But, if one happens to run into the Batsford edition of the book, don't trust it at all. Fischer has publicly spoken as to how Batsford has ruined his book. Here is the website where Fischer talks about it. http://home.att.ne.jp/moon/fischer/
It is true. It seems like the people at Batsford are purposely trying to ruin his credibility. They are trying to make him look like an idiot, like a no-good potzer. Nonetheless, the games are awesome and immortal. Fischer should publish a new edition of this book with 40 extra games. He should add the games from 1968 to 1972 and the games from the 1992 rematch.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Chess Books of All Time.......2003-12-06

This is the first non-beginners' chess book I ever read. Since it was the only chess book I had at the time, I read it over and over until I inadvertently memorized most of it. I can't say that it's the best chess book ever written. There are a few I like better, but this book was the right one for me at the time (1972).

I was a terrible player when I first read this book. Eventually I went on to become a pretty good one. I don't know how much credit Fischer gets. He probably would have told me to get a real job, but I loved the game no matter how awful I was.

I had the Descriptive Notation version in 1972. Sometime I lost it, but a few years ago, I managed to get a copy of it in hardback at a used bookstore for a couple of bucks. No, I am not offering it for sale.

        5 out of 5 stars Truly a classic.......2003-11-24

I own the Faber paperback version. Love his chess. Pretty balanced, down to earth style. Not dry and dull like Capa or Botvinnik, neither is it too speculative and complex like Tal. More like a aggressive positional with scope for tactics - an in between of the above players. I have modelled my play on his style and i had been playing better chess. I dislike studying all those opening books with plentiful variations and theories, but through this book I learnt something about The Sicilian Najdorf and the KID and Sozins which I still play, and develop my own ideas based on the way Fischer handled those openings. Have to admit that this book is full of heavy analysis and variations which my limited abilities cannot fathom everything or visualise too far ahead, the analysis notes helps in the practice of calculating variations in the manner prescribed by Kotov in his book Think Like a Grandmaster as not many games books are filled with all kinds of variations and sub variations. Apart from the book being more for the stronger or advanced player's study, lesser players like myself can gain quite a fair bit of ideas and insight in just playing through and appreciating the games and ideas as played by Fischer or his opponents. If you are only going to own just 1 chess book, then own this one. Pity it is no longer in print. Get hold of the Faber version if you can. Its the original one.

5 out of 5 stars The finest chess book I have ever owned.......2003-01-05

I agree with all of the positive remarks in the previous reviews.
This book is magical. I still remember the names that Larry Evens
gives to each game some 30 years after reading the book. This one
chess book was responsible for me to go from a novice 1600 rated player to a expert almost overnight. The clarity of Fischers approach to the game and his marvelous annotations completely changed my understanding of the game. It is a pity that such a gifted player and writter turns out to be such a creep in real life.

        5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone's chess library.......2002-08-21

My edition is Faber paperbacks 1972 and covers the period 1957-1967. I always tell people that it is the best (money) that I've ever spent! IM Larry Evans introduces all of the 60 games with titles like "Slaying the dragon", "Peekaboo strategy" and "Meat and potatoes". Although, of course, it is the annotations given by Fischer that make the book - highly recommended.

The best stuff - not only for masters and experts, but for amateur lovers of the game too. So clean are the games - you can just sit over a board and play the moves and get a true feel of what it is like to be a chess genius. Whenever I find myself in a slump, I go over a game - like the instructional gem with Trifunovich, for example, and I get my "Chess Mind" back. Truly a remarkable book.

My copy is falling apart, I've had it since 1972. The best ever!

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-11-03

Bobby Fischer is without question a chess genius.

As a person, Fischer is an enigma. He is a very high genius who as a young man exploded on the chess scene like a supernova. He won the US Chess Championships at the age of 14, an amazing feat by itself but only the beginning.

He is best known for his winning the World Championship from Boris Spassky in the 1970's. While many know this they do not know how amazing that feat really was.

International Chess is not the easiest forum to play in. In the 1970's and before it was dominated by the Russians. That is still true to some extent today, but not like it was back in the 1970's. Winning Chess tournaments where there were so many Russians involved was difficult especially because to put it nicely, the Russians would work as a team to help their designated leaders win. To put it not so nicely, they would help each other so that they would create the result that they wanted. Agreed upon draws after only a few moves were common. Collaboration on adjourned games was common.

Bobby Fischer's accomplishment in winning the world championship in this setting is a testament to his brilliance and his perseverance. Bobby played to win .... always! A planned draw just wasn't in his nature.

As an individual, Bobby Fischer beat them on his own, and he has never really been given the credit he deserved.

That having been said, Bobby Fischer has always been something of a recluse and for that reason the world has been robbed of his genius as he has dropped from the scene and arisen only occasionally to world notice.

He replayed Spassky and ran afoul of US immigration and has had legal problems since then. Recently he turned up in Japan and last I heard was granted citizenship and asylum in Iceland, where ironically he originally played Spassky back in the 70's.

All this is to say that this book represents Fischer's brilliance and unfortunately there are few other sources in which to find it in terms of his analysis and commentary.

Other reviews refer to the reprints which have altered the original and so the discerning buyer should make sure he is getting an original. Unfortunately, they usually are not cheap.

It is truly a gem and valuable for it's insight into chess as well as the rarity of its existence and being hard to find.

Say what you will about Fischer's social qualities, there has never been his match in Chess, and when you understand what he accomplished, how passionate he was (and is) about Chess and how difficult his accomplishments were, you have to just give him a tremendous amount of credit.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Masterpiece!.......2005-10-29

If you're looking for beauty in chess, this is the book to get. Fischer will certainly be remembered as the world's best chessplayer along with his predecessors Alekhine and Capablanca. I hope the original version is reprinted. It is truly a great chess classic.

--Alexander Shaumyan, poet and chess player, author of "Spirit of Rebellion"

        5 out of 5 stars Jonathan.......2005-10-27

This book was one of the best books I have ever read, (when i was U1600) and it is still one of my favorites! How could someone U1600 USCF understand this book??? Well it is simple, I was quite under rated. I think that Fischer described his memorable games very well, and even showed 3 of his losses (!) I don't think that this book was written for people with ratings U1800, but if you are a A player or higher this is the best book you can get. This will always be one of my ultime favorites.

        2 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2005-06-25

This will be very unpopular with Fischer fans, but I've never quite understood the hype surrounding this book. Yes, Fischer was a great player, but this book is extremely far from being the best chess book ever. If it were at all possible to present this book to a chessplayer who had no knowledge of Fishcer's identity, I doubt that they would be that impressed with it. There has been so much hero worship of this guy, that one review on a web site claimed that there were no analytical mistakes in this book!
There are better classics. Alekhine's, My Best Games of Chess, 1908 - 1937, Paul Keres collection of games, Kasparov's, The Test of Time, and more recently Shirov's, Fire on Board are better games collections.
While I agree that all game collections of past world champions have value, the praise heaped upon this book has been a bit extreme. Had Fischer completed his collection with a selection of games from his career during the late 1960's up to his 1972 World championsip match with Spassky, then maybe it would be worthy of all the undue praise that people have heaped on it. As it stands now it is extremely overrated

Access 2000: The Complete Reference confronts the least intuitive element of Microsoft Office 2000 and does an admirable job explaining how to use its numerous tools and features. Intermediate and advanced Access 2000 users--as well as people upgrading from earlier versions of the database program--will appreciate Andersen's comprehensive treatment of her subject.

Access 2000: The Complete Reference opens with a quick overview of the program's most rudimentary functions before stepping back to discuss relational database concepts. Andersen then documents Access 2000's data manipulation features, including the tools for establishing and manipulating relationships among tables. Readers also get a full rundown on building good queries.

Data presentation comes next: The book covers report creation--with and without the Report Wizard--and goes into depth on creating and editing graphs. The coverage of PivotTables--being both extremely powerful and rather hard to understand--could be more extensive. There's also a considerable amount of text dedicated to Access 2000's abilities to publish database information on networks and a little bit on Visual Basic as it applies to Access.

Throughout, Access 2000: The Complete Reference presents its documentation as a mixture of prose, stepped procedures, bulleted lists, and tables. A companion CD-ROM includes a quiz program that gauges the skills of people interested in taking the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) exam on Access 2000, plus the sample files discussed in the text. --David Wall

2 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic but not very useful for beginners.......2007-07-22

The book comes with a sample data base loaded on the CD but the author never took the time to illustrate the principles of data base construction with written out examples.
A word to publishers of mammoth books like Anderson's; a neophyte software user is not going to be very adept at dreaming up examples of the principles, and therefor really learn from all of the massive amounts of information contained in the book. This book is very difficult to use and probably would not be used by a serious programmer since it is not aimed at that audience. In fact I'm not sure who the audience is supposed to be except for the group of unwary buyers.

2 out of 5 stars Covers a lot, but "complete"? No........2006-02-05

When I bought this book, I thought this would have everything I would need. Wrong. The book is good for taking the exam, because it covers everything in just enough detail. However, if you want to do a lot of advanced operations like using cross-tab queries, Visual Basic, dynamic reports, etc, etc.. the book pretty much leaves you out in the cold.

Don't get me wrong: the book is great if all you want is a good overview of everything inside Access, but the title "Complete Reference" is totally misleading.

                    ...just my two cents...

1 out of 5 stars This book is useless.......2005-08-10

I can figure most things out by example, but this book's examples are worthless. You would think a 1319 page book would have the space to give some working examples rather than code snipets taken out of context.

I suppose that if you read the book from page 1 on through you might be able to understand the examples, but to use it as a index based reference is impossible.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource for the budding database developer........2004-04-16

After perusing the other reviews I reached this conclusion: (which makes sense) everyone has reviewed this book from their own perspective. As will I.

But first what the book isn't:
This book was not designed as an easy reference manual for you SQL and VB gurus out there who can whip out something superior to Microsoft Money in an afternoon. Check out the title The COMPLETE Reference. This book is 1300 pages long. It can be used as a study guide if you are going to take the MOUS.

This book was not designed (though the diligent can try) as an introduction to Access. There is so much information here that you will swamp yourself with details and give up before too long.

                    This book is:
A great resource for someone who has had one class in Access development, or (like me) two or three years of playing with simple databases (like tracking one checking account, etc.). There is a quick reference in back, which I've had limited success with. However, with a quick flip of the book's index, I can usually find what I am looking for on the first try.

What I feel was being said by the other reviewers (as a whole): This book doesn't fit my knowledge level!
Those who were not familiar enough with Access 2000 would not know where to look in an index. Those who can design Deep Thought (for all you Hitchiker's fans) would look it up but then have to sift through an entire lesson on the topic instead of just being told what to do.

                    *****Final Thoughts*****
This book fits the majority of Access users who have been using Access for a while, but aren't proficient enough to work as a professional database developer. Reading through two pages isn't a waste of time at this level because you get a well rounded view of the control/command/whatever.

I wasn't looking for a novel when I bought this book. I have enough knowledge to get around in acces and just wanted a referece that will give me the guidence to do the rest in a matter of few minutes. Wasn't expecting to read a novel to find something simple!!
If you prefer pictures illustrations to essay descriptions this isn't the book for you ..

As a Project Manager and Technical Trainer for one of the nation's leading investment banks, I have found the Guide to Microsoft Word 2000 to be an invaluable resource. In particular, Jim Maroe's exhaustive knowledge of the application coupled with his clear and concise delivery, make this a favorite amongst my end-users. We anxiously await Mr. Maroe's next book!

One final comment: Regarding an earlier review entitled: "The real truth!, August 14, 2000", this is a laughably obvious attempt by a spiteful individual -- who clearly does not possess any command of English grammar -- to discredit Jim's excellent work.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific source book.......2000-08-08

I received this book as part of the Perfect Access Word 2000 Tech Class and was very pleased with it. It lays out the groundwork for doing legal documents in Word, explains the rationale for why things work and why they don't, and how to handle it when they don't work.

It's logically laid out, easy to understand, and well-designed.

I am a trainer at a law firm, and this has helped me immensely.

As a paralegal, I've found Maroe's book particularly helpful in creating legal documents in Word 2000. I appreciate his straight forward, no-nonsense approach to using word processing software. This book is comprehensive and complete without the weight and bulk of other guides to Microsoft Word. You can read this one on the train or bus.

If you're aiming for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification or just want to make your workday more productive, Office 2000: the Complete Reference will work wonders for you. Comprehensive, well illustrated, and intelligently organized, it offers the information you need whether you're writing reports, adding to your database, or scheduling your day. Best of all, it has a large section on integrating the different components of Office, as the 2000 versions have been optimized for working together.

Author Stephen L. Nelson cuts through much of the nonsense of other guidebooks and concentrates on the "best possible way" to complete each task simply and efficiently. This philosophy eliminates much of the confusion found elsewhere by authors who try to explain too much.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains templates and samples referenced in the text, as well as some useful preparatory software made for MOUS certification. The thin coverage of FrontPage presents a potentially serious omission. If you do not plan to publish on the Web, or if you intend to get a FrontPage-specific manual, this shouldn't affect you. Overall, this is an outstanding package of instruction and reference for the intermediate Microsoft Office user. --Rob Lightner

This book does a good job of explaining how to use the most common features of Office-2000. The author develops the each section in a systematic way. This book is helpful if you are new to the Office environment.

If you have been using Office-2000 or an earlier version, unfortunately this book does not add much to what you already know.

Users who are looking for more advanced applications of Access, Excel, or Outlook Express, this book is not for you.

I would have also liked if the author had talked a bit about FrontPage.
