1 out of 5 stars If US is not your market - stay off this book.......2006-11-29

Ok so I received this book today. Boy what disappointment for me. This adress list is mainly towards american offices. This should have been stated in the AD somewhere. I am aiming for the european and asian market currently and beleived that in its 29th annual edition they would have been building adresses for other that US offices. There are some non-US adresses there, but just by an example; EMI ain't listed at all with any European adress (New York) and Air Chrysalis doesn't exist (well the latter may be gone anyways, I don't know). Deston Songs is non existent. And so the story goes.
If your market is mainly US this book might be great if its up to date (I don't know if it is.)
If your market currently is non-US; stay away from this book. There are other sources out there for that that is better. Online sources like [...] and such.
When that is said, the book also includes some articles about remixes, contract, lawyers and more that I found to be a good read.

I thought this book was good. I it gives you information, but I expected it to have even more. But it is still good, don't get me wrong.

5 out of 5 stars YOUR GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED.......2006-02-17

This book, is a valuable tool in aiding anyone who has ever sought to get their songs published. It has loads of contact names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, and other contact information for music publishers in the usa and around the world. And whatever you do, don't give up!!! And never take the word of a select few people as to your song's worth. There is a term in sales called "regional sales". In other words, what some people in certain parts of the world may think stinks, other people might go nuts over it!!! I cannot count on my fingers how many times I've heard of perfectly good musicians give up on writing, simply because they listened to their "friends" opinions, or got bad reviews in their home town. what anyone must realize when it comes to being an artist (music or otherwise) is that you are going to make someone jealous. And some will show it out front, and others will hide it behind a sincere looking, sometimes teary eyes appearance. And it is these people who do all they can to see you not succeed, sometimes even long time friends or family. I know, it has happened to me.
and I've seen people who, when they played their music in my area were literally booed. but kind of funny when they went to other parts of the country, they got rave reviews...interesting isn't it?
You might have a rap song and try it out in alabama and get run out of town, or a country song in boston and have them throw rocks at you. Then that same rap artist COULD go to Los Angeles and within minutes have 500,000 people begging for their autograph, and the country songwriter could go to Texas and have record producers lined up out the door...Get the picture?
this guide is published by folks who've been in the business for many many many years. They have a superb reputation, and so do most of the advertisers in the guide. And if (and it rarely happens) they find a dishonest music publisher, they boot them out of the next guide. I've been published and P-A-I-D for it, and YOU can do the same. Get inspired, quit listening to that negative voice inside you saying "you'll never make it, no one will like that stuff, It stinks", and GO FOR IT!!! You will never know if you have what it takes until you try. YOU WILL NEVER EVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY. AND IT DONT MATTER IF IT'S RAP ROCK GOSPEL COUNTRY RAGGAE OR A NEW MUSIC THAT DONT FIT INTO ANY ONE CATEGORY, YOU HAVE TO TRY!!!. It don't matter if you are dirt poor, or wealthier than your dog's cat, PUT IT OUT!!!!! It don't matter if you're a man or woman, a boy or girl, it don't matter your religion or where you come from, ANYONE can have their music published. SO GET AT IT AND GET THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!

Book Description

Seven friends made a pact to write haikus every day for a year as a way to keep in touch with each other. The result is The Haiku Year. Michael Stipe’s entries recall his twilight-drenched lyrics for R.E.M. Douglas Martin’s spare, elegant prose illuminates the hidden corners of life while Grant Lee Phillips thoughtful storytelling is pared down to the simplest language. Hinting at the transcendence and banality of everyday life, the short verses signify an appreciation for small moments of beauty and ultimately urge readers to let these realizations pierce through the numbness of their daily routines. Photographs are included.

5 out of 5 stars HAIKU! Gesundheit........2007-06-05

I discovered this book years ago while randomly flipping through poetry books at a bookstore. I bought it because after reading the authors introduction I felt like I needed to. They wrote a "haiku" a day to eachother for a year, they admitted that sometimes they forgot, and that their work was not based on the traditional stlye that we are all forced to learn in grade school. The very short, and rather brilliant poetry of Jack Kerouac was their influence. So in actuality the poems in the book are what Kerouac would have called "pops", and therefore have no syllable pattern, seasonal reference is not required and it would make Basho cry. If you are looking for traditional haiku, this is probably a book to skip.

Now, I enjoy traditional haiku as much as anyone. I also have alot of respect for contemporary writers who can adhere to those standards that I, and perhaps many others, cannot. It is not to say that because of this the style should be abandoned, but niether should this idea of a Western form. The poems in this book give that form an excellent start, they embody many feelings and do indeed make the reader look at their life in a new way. I have read it several times over and shared it with friends who agree it has that effect.

I love this book because it is modern, involves daily life, and inspires me. I have been undertaking the Haiku Challenge for about five years now with mixed success, but it has made my everyday life all the richer.

1 out of 5 stars Basho for casho.......2006-10-30

Big ego crammed into Haiku
fat heads barely fit;
a poor craft for shallow waters.

3 out of 5 stars not for the haiku but ..........2006-06-20

If you wish to see the best of contemporary English haiku this is not the book for you. However, it does have an appropriate place in the library. First, the haiku provide interesting insights into the lives of the authors. In keeping to the concreteness of the form, one see the authors' experiences more directly. They write more of what happened rather than what they think about the experience in retrospect. Second, the volume provides an example of an interesting approach to a personal journal - an approach than gains values over time rather than becoming the musings of someone you know longer feel you are. So in a strange way, I recommend this book.

1 out of 5 stars It's the end of haiku as we know it..........2006-06-01

This is what has become of haiku in English- and it is all bad. Haiku in America in general is vastly misunderstood and each of the verses in this volume show it. Some have three lines, some do not, some have kigo, some do not. By the looks of this, one can deduce that these "poets" gleamed their knowledge of haiku from Kerouac (another haiku fraud) rather than Basho. This is just an experiment really, conducted by a circle of friends who jotted down their thoughts and sent them to one another. Please, please avoid this title if you really care about or want to learn about haiku. Amazon should allow "0" stars when rating items such as this!

4 out of 5 stars chill out.......2005-03-05

Not many people would argue that Japanese Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism aren't valid or relevant religions. They may not be much like the "original" forms of Buddhism but they are Buddhism and they have much to say (to say the least.) They are just also "japanese" and "tibetan" and unavoidably have a context.

I am a white American leftist yankee writing haiku, not some Japanese guy from a hundred years ago living on Mount Fuji. The syllable thing is bs anyway, since English syllables do not correspond in length to Japanese syllables.

Haiku Year authors never claimed to be Basho or William Higginson for that matter. If you read the Haiku Year you will see that its main purpose is to show a year of friendship and observation (with all its warts) and hopefully inspire other folks to write as well. Its is not a guide to writing haiku or held up as the pinnacle of haiku writing.

Muddy Waters is so much better than the Rolling Stones, but
"Dead Flowers" , "Monkey Man", and most of the Stones stuff rocks on its own merits. It also just might lead you back to Muddy Waters.

I started Writing Haiku about 3 years ago. I was interested in writing structured poetry, and was told that writing Haiku would help my overall writing skills. As I wrote more and more haiku I saw growth in my writing as a whole, and I was interested in learning to write better haiku, in the hopes of becoming a well rounded poet. I bought Bishiki, and the tips, and advise inside were invaluable. I saw a brand new way to look at haiku, and poetry as a whole. After reading and incorporating Bikishi into my poetry skill set, I was able to win the Head to Head Haiku competition at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Charlotte, NC in 2006. Bashiki....gotta get it!!!!!!

This book won an honorable mention (one of six in no order of precedence) in the HSA Merit Book Awards for books published in 1988 (award made in 1999). That year, the top three prizes went, respectively, to Nicholas A. Virgilio's *Selected Haiku*, Rod Willmot's *Sayings for the Invisible*, and Jane Reichhold's *Tigers in a Teacup*. The award is documented in *A Haiku Path*, the history of the first 20 years of the Haiku Society of America, published by the society.

5 out of 5 stars A journey of discovery and enlightenment.......1999-01-14

Living on a New England farm, poet Joseph Gustafson observes the special moments of each season that connect us with nature briefly, but also for all times. This book has a timeless quality that reminds us of the passing of time and the need to savor and save our natural environment. Implicitly, the book reminds us that our own salvation is linked with natural laws, and when we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves. Won a Merit Book Award by the Haiku Society of America in 1987, an honor well deserved. .

Guided only by a strange riddle from given to them by an Oak tree, Spiderwort, along with Rosemary Periwinkle and Cinnebar, have only a little while to find the Princess and get her to safety. As always the Fairies will have a little magical assistance this time from a well-meaning Scarecrow and the already ghostly Minstrel of Epic Poems.

A world without simple pleasures would be unbearable and it is has already started with the children of the world. If it should leave the adults as well, it might very well be gone for good. Luckily for everyone, Fairies are the best problem solvers around and Spiderwort is one of the fastest thinking of them all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Fairy Tale.......2007-09-19

Having purchased this book for one of my nieces that loves fairies and princesses, I was surprised by how much I liked it. The tale is not what I expected; it's better. And it's very unique. J.H. Sweet mixes a few traditional fairy tale characters such as a magical scarecrow, a ghost, ogres and a princess in trouble, then adds in some very unique items like puzzles to solve, a scavenger hunt, and poetry-writing. The scavenger hunt is very unusual because the fairies have to seek experiences, rather than things. This makes the book very meaningful and interesting because as the characters progress through their adventure, they definitely learn something. However, they figure everything out for themselves. I almost forgot that an older fairy was along on the adventure because the younger ones were so capable of handling things. This is very empowering and has the ability to make young people feel as though they can make a difference. I highly recommend this Fairy Tale for anyone who likes unique storylines in children's literature, and for those who enjoy children's fantasy.

Harry Lorayne, one of magic's most sought after teacher, will teach anyone the ins and outs of excellent magic. I started with this book 9 years ago and still use it today for reference. This book is organized into card tricks, coin tricks, impromptu magic, and sleights. The best part is Harry's personal presentation tips for making a lasting impression on your audience. The tips alone in this book are worth more than the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars THE Magic Book.......1999-04-30

If you've dabbled in magic and decide you want to get serious, this is the book to get. If you need a gift for a budding young magicion, this is the book to get. Many people know Harry as a memory expert, but magicians also know Harry as an accomplished performer, teacher, and author of magic.

``The Magic Book'' contains descriptions of solid, professional style (no pulling coins out of ears magic here!) close up magic. Indeed, many magicians complained to Harry that he was giving too much away. Their loss is definately your gain.

As a note, this book is in print, having been republished recently by L&L publishing. You might have to search for it. Any magic shop should be able to get it for you, or search the web for a magic supplier.

              5 out of 5 stars A superb introduction to sleight-of-hand magic!.......1998-10-13

Harry Lorayne is best known today as a memory expert. Six Las Vegas casinos won't deal Blackjack to him because of his ability to remember cards. However, within the magic fraternity, Lorayne is both a top notch entertainer and original thinker. I've used two card sleights he invented, the halo cut and the ultra-move, to perform what look like card miracles for audiences. In "The Magic Book", Lorayne presents a complete and solid grounding in the basics of sleight-of-hand magic. Starting with cards, he explains the basics of false shuffling, false cuts, double lifts, palming, and forces. His explanation of the jog shuffle is vital for every magician who works with cards. The following two chapters describe effects and routines that use the sleights just explained and essentially self-working card routines. Many of these routines are real stunners, quite literally reputation makers. Whether easy or difficult to perform, the routines give the illusion of the performer being a wizard with cards. Turning from cards, basic coin sleights and routines are explained next, followed by number magic, mental magic and miscellaneous magic. One of the most important parts of the book is the "Afterthoughts" paragraph that follows the description of a particular sleight or routine. Here, Lorayne explains both important points to remember and why certain moves or patter work. These explanations turn the tricks into real magic. Harry Lorayne is one of the best teachers of magic around. "The Magic Book" supports that contention by demonstrating that Lorayne teaches one how to be a magician, that is, how to make real magic happen, as opposed to simply doing tricks. This book is one which belongs in every magician's library.

Game writers have a hard lot. In order to compete, they're expected to write fantastic works of art and action that feature spectacular visual and physical effects, and which can render those effects with great speed. If they don't write for the latest hardware (which is often barely stable), the designers end up with something that looks antiquated. In the end, as well, there is the target market: Mostly males between the ages of 15 and 30, who have sharpened their volatility of taste to a fine edge. Game Architecture and Design is a protracted meditation on what makes a game (and a game development company, and a game developer) good.

This is not a programming book; it is a design book. Andrew Rollings and Dave Morris do talk about game architecture, and pick apart some top games with state diagrams and sketches of class hierarchies, but that sort of content is in the minority. Mostly, the authors provide informed opinions about bigger engineering decisions, such as the question of whether to use Microsoft DirectX or OpenGL, or how to spread processor cycles across artificial intelligence and rendering operations. They make frequent reference to successful (and failed) games, explaining why each might have worked out as it did. --David Wall

Topics covered: How to write good games, and other entertainment software. Overall, emphasis is on developing an idea into a product, with long and carefully considered digressions into architectural decisions (such as gameplay and visual effects), implementation choices (languages, libraries, and algorithms), and team management.

                Book Description

Game Architecture and Design: A New Edition is a revision of the classic that you have been waiting for! This is a detailed guide to game design and planning from first concept to the start of development, including case studies of well known games. Originally published in 1999, Game Architecture and Design, has been updated by the original authors Andrew Rollings and Dave Morris. They tap back into what they teach so well and update this classic with skills and techniques found in the industry today. With more than just re-usable code, it's a comprehensive study that deals specifically with the issues of game design, team building and management, and game architecture. Through the use of real-world experiences and case studies, Andrew and Dave share it all. They show you what's worked and why as well as what to avoid and how to fix any errors. This intelligent and well-argued book is a glimpse into the often-disordered world of game development. Readers will gain solid advice and know-how that can bring some order to the often-chaotic world found in game development.

5 out of 5 stars Not what I expected but certainly worth the effort........2007-08-28

I began reading this book expecting to learn something about game programming and architecture but what I came out with was less about programming and specific technical advice (though there was some of that) and more about the process of creating games, including how someone might attempt to manage a game development project. Even though my expectations were not met I can honestly say that I was not disappointed. The book was very well written and thorough in many ways (e.g., project management, "what is a game?") and weak in others (e.g., programming tricks, guidelines).

The first half of the book was dedicated to the process of creating games. The project management side of game creation. There are plenty of books about gaming programming with API X with Language Y. In my opinion these books are frequently unfulfilling because they concentrate on tiny details (such as a specific method in DirectX). Things you should be able to glean from help documentation such as the MSDN or user forums. They rarely show the larger picture. Game Architecture and Design introduced me to a side of game development I had never considered and this was easily the most interesting and well thought out portion of the book. I've often thought about what kind of game I would like to create but I never asked myself: What is a game? What makes a game fun? How do I design a game specification document? What sort of project management pitfalls might I come across and how can I void them? This book constantly asks these sorts of questions. Interestingly, while reading through this section I found myself asking the same questions when playing through some professional big budget games and found that even the professionals could have used this book to improve their games.

The latter half of the book touched upon the actual game architecture. I found this part rather weak. Though it promotes the idea of abstraction, modules and flexibility these are not new concepts to software development in general and are covered in better details in books dedicated to software design patterns, techniques and technologies. Some of the suggestions are more suited to company policy such as variable naming guidelines, commenting etc. That's not to say that these things aren't important (I personally try to adhere to a particular style), but I'm not convinced these sorts of opinion driven items will fit everyone's coding style.

Overall I found the book incredibly engaging, especially the first half of the book. I've always thought about game development in terms of classes, variables, source control etc and I never questioned what happens before coding begins. I would highly recommend this book to any budding game developer in so far as understanding the entire game development process, from inception to documentation to creation. Though not the Rosetta stone for game developers it is an excellent resources for beginners and experienced developers alike.

                1 out of 5 stars I don't recommend this book.......2006-09-13

The authors often lose plenty of time talking too much.
I do not recommend this book to anyone, although one can find anything interesting it is not necessary to read the whole book to learn the new concepts.

5 out of 5 stars A great book, a must for new game designers........2005-07-18

This book should be on the shelf of every game developer and designer. It's a relatively complete guide to the development/design process of a video game and will give excellent insight into the techniques and approaches used by the professionals of the field. It covers a lot of topics so it ends up not being (nor pretending to be) a specialized "textbook", but it is a very high quality overview of the creative phase with many great tips and guides. Placing an example game design document at the end of the book was a classy and very appreciated decision :)

If you're interested in game design or game development in general, please, do buy this book. If you're interested in a specific area of development, such as general coding, buy game programming gems or game programming graphics gems if you're into gfx. If you're looking for a hardcore game programming guide, this is not what you want.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Insight into the Game Industry.......2005-03-18

I found this book to be very interesting in designing a game from start to finish. However, finished in this case means the design document. The book sparcely covers the technical and programming aspects of game design and instead considers designing the game completely on paper.

It covers various topics including concept, character creation, play balance, and working with the programming team. The examples included are simple rock-paper-scissor rules with other interesting variations. It covers how to document object attributes and the game effects they have. By following the book the new developer should realize the author's ideal development environment, where the developer(s) make a design document that is sufficient for the programmers to code without requiring constant attention from the designer(s), and thus freeing designer(s) to work on a new game (with a new programming team) while the current one is programmed. This approach is explained more fully in a rather lenghty section near the end of the book. Additionally, the author comments on the industry's currently development model, and compares it to his model.

There appear to be several flaws with the book. For example, the author favors first-person perspective shooters as the most interactive type of game and therefore the most fun. The emphasis placed on interactivity seems to be mostly in the form of different ways of doing the same task (i.e. shooting different guns, etc.). To me this seemed to be adding features that did not radically affect gameplay, something the author warns not to do. Also, it is mostly written in the form of experience and ideas applied to real world examples and not general game theory. While general game theory is not completely neccessary, serious developers should learn general game theory and not just a few working examples, if they want to innovate and not derivate.

Overall, this book succeeds in its goal to provide a beginner with a basic idea of game development and does it without complicated theory and math.

5 out of 5 stars Original edition was great.......2004-11-06

I haven't read "A New Edition", but I did read the 1999 edition of Game Architecture and Design. I've just recommended it to the Game Designers mailing list as a valuable book. I've been a professional game designer since 1988. GA&D had a different perspective on design and has been really useful to me. I'm sure the updated edition is even better.
