Book Description
Including a facsimile of the complete shooting script--Academy Award-nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine) shares his vision transforming the bestselling novel into a seamless and profound masterpiece of a movie. Set in the Pacific Northwest a few years after the end of WWII, Snow Falling on Cedars is a powerful, lyrical meditation on the heartache--and consequences--of lost love. It tells the story of Ishmael Chambers (Ethan Hawke), a journalist reporting on the trial of a Japanese American accused of murdering a local fisherman. The trial forces the entire village to face the shame of sending their Japanese American neighbors to internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and becomes the turning point for the honorable but wounded Hawke to free himself from his obsessive passion for his childhood love, the Japanese woman now married to the accused. Here is a deeply haunting mystery and a heartbreaking tale of passion, justice, and the accidents of nature which rule every corner of the universe. In the Newmarket Shooting Script Series format, here is the complete shooting script, an introduction by Hicks, notes and storyboards with his own drawings of scene renditions and camera angles, and a detailed interview revealing how he envisioned turning the acclaimed David Guterson novel into a movie. Illustrated with production stills and examples of several versions of poster art, the book is a must for all film students, fans, and lovers of the novel. The movie stars Ethan Hawke (Great Expectations, Reality Bites), James Cromwell (Babe), Richard Jenkins (There's Something about Mary), Youki Kudoh (Picture Bride), James Rebhorn (The Game), Sam Shepard (Safe Passage), newcomer Rick Yune, and Max Von Sydow (Hannah and Her Sisters). The producers are Kathleen Kennedy (E.T., The Color Purple), Frank Marshall (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Harry J. Ufland, and Ron Bass.
Customer Reviews:
Successful screen adaptation of a complex novel.......2000-04-25
Everyone will acknowledge that to adapt a novel for the screen always amounts to a difficult - and in many cases a downright impossible - undertaking. This is not any different with "Snow Falling on Cedars", a novel that is remarkable for its use of different time levels as well as an array of characters complex enough to scare off most scriptwriters. Given the difficulties Ron Bass and Scott Hicks must have faced while adapting the novel, I am all the more pleased with the result of their work. All in all it is fair to say that they have succeeded in writing a script that never runs the risk of cutting the novel's central thread and that pays attention to a great many of the book's intricate details. One drop of bitterness, however, is exactly the use of the aforementioned time levels - or "time frames", as Hicks calls them in his commentary that closes the script - as their complex arrangement both threatens the smooth evolving of the story and tends to confuse those readers not familiar with the novel. But then this may have to do more with the general problems associated with bringing a novel to the screen than with Bass' and Hicks' qualities as scriptwriters, and I would still recommend this script to anyone interested in getting to know more about the filming of "Snow Falling on Cedars" and about adapting a novel for the screen in general.

Book Description
An intimate look at a fascinating subculture, its star personalities, and the death-defying confrontation between man and beast that has made bull riding the fastest growing sport in the world Just as spectators flock to a NASCAR race because of its inherent danger, bull riding possesses a blood-and-guts excitement that sells tickets. In Fried Twinkies, Buckle Bunnies, and Bull Riders, award-winning sports journalist Josh Peter takes readers along on the 2004 Professional Bull Riders (PBR) tour to witness the sports exploding popularityand discover why athletes in spurs, cowboy hats, and colorful chaps are hooking millions of fans across the country. The 2004 season begins like all PBR seasons, with 800 cowboys competing for a chance to be in the top 45 who ride in 29 major events during the season, with the best of the best taking home a $1 million bonus. Success is measured in secondsmanaging to stay on a bull for 8 seconds without getting tossed is likely to secure a rider a big score. Most riders fail. Many get seriously injured; some die. Josh Peter captures the high drama of the sport and introduces readers to a culture thats rife with colorful characters: the courageous riders chasing their dreams, the scouts, breeders, love-struck groupies, and a few of those very angry bulls.
Customer Reviews:
The business of bull riding . . ........2007-08-14
The one thing wrong with this book is the title. It's strictly about pro bull riders and the multimillion-dollar business that has raised bullriding from a feature rodeo event to a cross between NASCAR and the WWF. You'll learn little about fried Twinkies, buckle bunnies, and whatever they're supposed to represent.
Sports writer Josh Peter follows the 2004 PBR tour that crisscrosses the U.S. and ends with the finals in Las Vegas, drumming up excitement and suspense as he goes. He brings to life the widely divergent personalities of the riders, ranging from seasoned champion and family-man Adriano Moraes and the stereotypical drinking, cussing Justin McBride, to the withdrawn, almost spookily religious Mike Lee. Among them are a diversity of others, including rookies, old-timers hoping for a comeback, and competitors from countries as far away as Australia and Brazil. We learn that one out of 15 rides results in injuries requiring treatment, and much time is spent in the sports medicine room.
Meanwhile, we follow the drama of big business as differences between the men who run this show create a number of conflicts that lead to firings and the threat of a boycott by riders who feel they are being under-appreciated by their employers. Peter's revelation of these behind-the-scenes maneuvers will enlighten fans familiar only with the glitz and glamour of the sport and the men who are its stars. We learn about the stock growers and investors who raise, train, buy, and sell bulls. There's even a side trip to Brazil, where we visit the ranch Moraes has bought with his winnings. Readers will also enjoy the DVD "Rank," which is a compelling record of the 2004 season finals, focusing on Moraes, McBride, and Lee.
Dad liked it!.......2007-01-15
Gave this book to my dad who is a rodeo fan. He enjoyed it. Said it was a good read and he finished it in about 2 days.
I'm biased.......2006-12-26
OK, I must admit right off that I am a friend of the author's. He's a nice guy. More importantly, he's a good writer. I was deeply moved by some parts of this book, and that was before I met Josh.
I suspect the high ratings for this book might be because PBR fans tend to be awfully enthusiastic about the sport. If you are not a PBR fan but are curious, check it out.
Everything PBR.......2006-08-01
As an avid PBR fan, I greedily tore through the pages of Fried Twinkies. This book answered all of my questions about bull riding and provided information that I didn't know to ask about. Anyone who enjoys the marvelous sport of bull riding must purchase and read this book.
Real Good .......2006-04-10
Good reading about the PBR if your a bull rideing fan you'll love this book. Good behind the seen coverage. This book one that is hard to put down.

A Bunny's Life.......2007-05-25
The Bunny Years: The Inside Story of the Playboy Clubs and the Women Who Worked as Bunnies
I thought this book was wonderful and insightful! I've always been mesmerized by the Playboy Bunny and this book gave great insights about the Bunny Years. It was great to have the interviews from the early years all the way to when the Clubs closed and the Bunny as we knew it was over.
Hefner's Bulging Envelope Finally Burst.......2003-06-01
Left with little more than a question of the significance of the fact that the Playboy Bunny upon whom the Clubs relied for survival was able to withstand the storm of protests that were the context of the Steimem brand of feminist philosophy, it's clear that Hefner may have undermined his own success - with clubs at least - and the potential that might have been possible - under the weight of boundaries pushed too far. Where the ideal of the Bunny and the simple design which made it so popular to men and women alike were seduced into the conflict with Guccione and the Penthouse decision to "bare all" in the name of exploitive art, the envelope burst at the seams along with the integrity of the costumes that showcased their popularity into profits, crippling what was then a burgeoning industry accepted by both males and females alike into one that was far beyond its capacity to deliver in a civilized world. The fact that there were never public bars in Playboy Clubs where singles could congregate as there are in strip clubs is evidence of the fact that Playboy Clubs and Bunnies were never intended to be the solitary fascination of exploitive men, but highly trained social vehicles to stimulate the ease of social gatherings in clubs that valued the heights of glamour and glitz that often constitutes the epitome of entertainment, and their venues, for the comfort and pleasure of the customer entitled to value for the money paid. At their heyday, they provided that environment to both men and women alike in an era where males, always better paid, were always willing to celebrate their manly and gentlemanly generosity and pay the bills to be so lavishly courted, and society managed to find ways to do that, unlike today. It was also a time when women recognized the value in allowing them that courtesy without having to feel ashamed or obligated to be shown that courtesy simply because they accepted the fact that their company alone was worth it. In the "feminist-offended" world of today, the ultra-sensitivity of economic disparity has challenged the self esteem of both to a point where only unisex is honorable and worthy of recognition. The author's very astute observation of the fact that the skill and comfort attained by females in the industry had no problem keeping their femininity - AND - converting those skills into personal and professional achievements in a world of both men and women, usually that had little to do with glamour and glitz, but without having to sacrifice that in order to succeed in the world of work. In ignoring gender differences and restricting their natural expression, the opportunity for exaggerated unnatural expression was greatly accelerated in the use and proliferation of strip clubs that greatly diminish the potential of graceful distinction and convert it too often into disgraceful appreciation of female intimacy and its boundaries, leaving a wide gulf of respectable chaos in its wake that has yet to be addressed or resolved.
The Bunny Years.......2000-12-01
I thought this was a very good book. It showed so many women who have made great contributions with their lives after getting started in what was not an easy job. Waiting tables is not easy, especially in high heels.
A great book to know about the other side........2000-08-21
The Bunny Years tells wonderful stories of women looking for work and independence despite the double standards and taboos that faced them. I love the fact that these women kept their self-resepect and were able to aim for thier goal outside of the club.
Better than I expected...........2000-03-29
I bought this book after watching "A Tale of Two Bunnies" on ABC sparked my curiosity. I thought it was just going to be a bunch of ex-bunnies telling stories about the club but the book went beyond that. It managed to discuss the beginnings of the club, the evolution of the bunny costume, the training of the women who worked there, advantages of working in the club, and the kind of women that were hired. It was fascinating to see so many different races and backgrounds being sought in the 60's. Of course it had personal tales (no pun intended) along with the whole "where are they now" bit. The pictures are wonderful and at times very candid. I recommend this to anyone who wants to know the real deal behind the ears.

Product Description
Regan Johnson takes the classic children's nursery rhyme and provides it with a new twist. Set in China, this bunny doesn't like to play with field mice. Instead, he prefers chopping down bamboo. Unfortunately for Little Bunny Kung Fu, many creatures in the forest rely on the bamboo. Eventually, Great Dragon must come down and set Little Bunny Kung Fu straight. Join Little Bunny Kung Fu in his romp throught the Chinese forest as he learns respect for others.

Pure Delight!.......2006-06-11
Regan Johnson is an incredible author and artist. Little Bunny Kung Fu is a must have for your child or grandchild's library. I look forward to many more fine books by her. This book is pure delight for any age!
A rhyming children's picturebook with an underlying theme about respect for others and the environment.......2006-03-13
Little Bunny Kung Fu is a rhyming children's picturebook with an underlying theme about respect for others and the environment. Little Bunny Kung Fu loves to practice martial arts among the bamboo, cutting stalks in half with his attacks and his throwing stars. But what are the creatures who eat, live in, or hide in the bamboo to do in the wake of Little Bunny Kung Fu's destruction? One by one they ask the bunny not to harm their bamboo; he disregards them all, until at last a visit from the Great Dragon sets Little Bunny Kung Fu straight. The black-and-white artwork, drawn with a Chinese theme - the Great Dragon is clearly an Asian dragon, and Little Bunny Kung Fu wears a traditional Chinese shirt - brims with enthusiasm in this delightful tale.
What could be worse than bopping field mice?.......2006-02-01
Remember the camp song, "Little Bunny Foo-Foo, hopping through the forest, scooping up the field mice and bopping 'em on the head."?
Well, Little Bunny Kung Fu doesn't torment furry little creatures but he does go around destroying bamboo with his kung fu moves. He is warned by Panda, Monkey, and Tigress..and then Great Dragon comes down.
This charming story illustrated with intriguing black and white photos is a perfect way to teach your child how to care for the environment and respect other creatures. Kids who are involved in martial arts programs will especially get a kick out of this book. (Pun intended)

The classic comedy of Bugs Bunny.......1998-02-19
This book captures the history behind Bugs Bunny and all of the other Warner Bros. characters. It provides interesting information on how and why these horrorshow cartoons were made. A few in-depth sections may bore the average reader, but for the most part, the book is filled with intersting tales of car wax.

Book Description
Entertainment industry veteran Harvey Sheldon has assembled a series of highly entertaining and educational series of lectures with video illustration detailing the important but little-appreciated story. How the founding fathers of American music, most of them immigrants of Russian-Jewish extraction, created the American songbook, jazz, the Broadway musical, as well as the radio, recording and the movie industries. Sheldon, a born entertainer and story-teller, has studied this era of Americana closely. His series of presentations draw upon the video libraries of Jewish-American music he has donated to the University of Pennsylvania and University of Southern California. These shows captivate audiences, hold them spellbound, teach important lessons about American Jewish culture, and capture the immigrant experience. His question-and-answer sessions always go overtime because the audiences do not want to leave. Multimedia footage includes seldom-seen performances by Al Jolson, Alice Faye, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Eddie Cantor, Cab Calloway, Doris Day, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Harry James and many, many more, performing the timeless music of Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Harold Arlen, and others inspired by them. Audiences are spellbound, educated and are entertained by the most creative period in American music history. Harvey Sheldon's timeless presentation is a must see for anyone interested in 'emmis' (the truth) behind the growth of America's greatest export: music and the roles of the Jews who helped create this fantastic art form. Customer Reviews:
Absolutely NOT WORTH BUYING!.......2003-06-20
I love reading mysteries, especially the type where you get to figure out the mystery by looking at the clues. I have read books like this before and I was hoping to be quite entertained by this book. Personally, I can't even understand why somebody would allow this garbage to be published. The answers are not very accurate and in some cases downright stupid. This is the worst book of this type I have ever read. Not only was it badly edited, but it is not even very cohesive. I can't see a child or adult liking this. If it were possible to give this book ZERO STARS I would.
It's a mystery how some of these answers were created.......2001-01-03
I *love* those figure-it-out mystery stories, where you have to riddle through a situation and figure out what happened. I was very disappointed, however, when I grabbed this book to entertain myself for an evening. The stories themselves are relatively interesting, but when it comes down to figuring out whatever the question is, their conclusions are at time questionable and in some cases downright wrong. The leaps of logic they make to deduce their answers are simply not reasonable. I'd bypass this one and look to some of the other offerings out there.

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 Hands-On Training.......2007-01-11
Good price, quick delivery, and brand new. All positive feedback. The only slightly negative thing is one of the corners of the book was damaged, but the book is fully usable.
Terrible.......2006-06-09
I had to buy this book for a class, it is terrible. All the author does is have you go click here and drag this to go through the exercises with no explainations. It's a waste of time and money.
Best book out there to learn Dreamweaver.......2006-03-26
I have taken several classes to learn Dreamweaver but still didn't handle to use Dreamweaver very well...until I found this book which answered all the questions I had to master Dreamweaver. This book is the best book out there so far for beginner; A must have.
I Was Forced To Read This For A Class, and Will Never Be The Same Again.......2006-03-12
This has to be the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor, and spare yourself from the pain. The author thinks it's cute to make little quips that a 3 year might think of and put little wink things behind them, you know what I mean ;). The problem is they just annoy you to no end. The other annoying thing is that it takes the author a page and half to say "Hit the Enter Key". He spends page after page talking of inane things, hawking other books, and making stupid, juvenile comments. The book is a laborious 700 pages long, an agonizing 700 pages long. I have noticed that they have fired the dweeb who wrote it, Garo Green (who I always imagined him as a pasty white, fat 50 year old geek-you'll see what I mean if you have the misfortune of being forced to use this book), and significantly shorten the book, even though Dreamweaver 8 has many more features. I write this with the full knowledge that I will be selling my copy of this at the end of the semester, and that this review will adversely affect my selling price, but the book is really that bad. Unless you need it for a course, do not buy it. I promise you will regret it.
The best thing out there!.......2006-02-23
This book follows along with the online lessons offered at lynda.com. The exercises in the CD-ROM are the same as those used online. As complimentary tools to one another, they are without any doubt, hands down, the best thing anywhere for learning Dreamweaver from scratch, whether you learn best visually, by listening, or by doing, or all of the above. (Believe me, I over-research everything.) I can't recommend strongly enough that you consider getting both the book/CD and the online tutorials at lynda.com. They offer free samples so you can test it out. Have the book in front of you, download the sample exercises from the CD, and start the online tutorial. You can flip back and forth on your computer between the tutorial and doing the exercises, and follow along (and take notes) in the book. As good as an expensive class (or better, since with this you can rewind, skip around, and take unlimited bathroom breaks)!
