Customer Reviews:
Worst Book I've Bought.......2007-09-26
This is one of the worst purchase I've ever bought ... I ignored some of the negative reviews that Seth's book got, and bought it anyway just to give it a try.
Singing For The Stars have around 100 pages more or less (don't remember cause I gave the book away 3 days after I bought it), and the fist half of the book is NOTHING but SELF-PROPS (I'm NOT exaggerating). The other half of the book have some informations and some, yet again, self-props. To put it all together, almost every page in this book have some kind of self-props. I skipped all the self-props and finished the book in about 15 minutes. I also found it funny how Seth criticized other competing books and he ended up doing the same thing ... throwing out things without fully explaining it.
The CDs are just ok. This book CD combo is really an exercise program to help you increase your vocal range, so IMHO it will not make you a better singer. To sing good, you'll need more than just hitting the notes. The exercises in his CDs are incomplete ... it goes up in scales but not down.
For beginners: I would not buy this book. Go get voice lessons. This book (even though it have some useful exercises), will NOT make you a better singer. A good personal instructor can and will make you a better singer. If you don't want to spend the $ for an instructor, then search for "voice lessons" on Google & you'll find plenty of lessons for FREE. And yes, these free lessons on the internet (youtube for examble) have the same exercises as Seth's CDs.
For advanced singer: I noticed some reviews said this book is really for the intermediate/advance singers. Probably true ... but if you're at that level, you'll either can play some kind of instruments or know someone that does. You can record variety of scales on your PC and burn it to a CD for around 20c or less (if you buy blank CDs in bulk). Do it yourself CD will not only have better coverage than Seth's CD but will cost less.
One book, one teacher not nearly enough.......2007-07-26
In my opinion, this book has too much self-congratulation in it. It's the mark of insecurity, isn't it? The voice has registers that you have to learn how to smoothly connect; Riggs is quite right about that. Manuel Garcia, the legendary Spanish teacher, wrote about that 150 years ago! Also, the Englishman, Herbert-Cesari wrote brilliantly about these vocal qualities in the 1950's.
Life is short and art is long; and no one teacher or school of thought has a corner on the market of wisdom. Seth Riggs is most likely one of thousands of people on the planet who could give you helpful feedback about your voice. The main thing is to start singing along with studying. Then you learn by doing! Remember a singer sings and doesn't need anybody's approval or permission to do so.
You accumulate knowledge and skill by networking with others, not by getting addicted to hypnotic suggestions that an "exclusive" method guaratees success, or becoming in turn addicted to the personality of a charismatic teacher who may, in part, exploit your dreams; or you may exploit the teacher because you want to dream.
In any case, a real living teacher that you can afford to see regularly can help much. Seek knowledge without looking for magic-wand, short-term solutions or letting yourself be dominated by any fanaticism regarding method. Whether or not you achieve something depends on yourself in the end.
I live and work in Europe as a professional singer. I've sung opera, art songs, negro spirituals, jazz, Irish, etc...
I've also had a chance to get to know a lot of great singers. And since they've walked the walk and not just talked the talk, they have much good to say. They have integrated what they've been taught by others, but also what they learned themselves. They're superteachers!
Singing is about soul...and connectedness to the music and the words. It's also a lot of work to keep the voice healthy and stretched, and the rest of your body too. I have studied in my life with at least 20 teachers. They've all taught me something valuable. I've taken classes at universities, read scores of books and had countless conversations with fellow musicians about music. There's just so much to learn and nobody will be or should pretend to be your fairy god mother. It's a life-long, self-motivated project qua passion.
Very motivating.......2007-07-16
Bought the book to supplement a 'living teacher', and am not disapointerd in the presentation of the concepts. Honestly, most things are better done with a living teacher, but this is good extra material.
Really found the incesant placement of famous people's pictures with their testimonials to be insulting. Name dropping does not a good teacher make unless he/she is teaching name dropping.
Seth Riggs is a Master Teacher.......2007-06-08
The lessons in this collection would cost thousands if you were to pay a voice teacher for them. Seth Riggs offers them for a great price and you can use them forever! This is the best deal!
Unusable for people without extensive background.......2007-03-26
I found the CD unusable because of the speed of the exercises. A friend to whom I gave the book had a similar experience -- frustration, boredom, no results. I had high hopes for this product when I bought it, but I have gone back to Roger Love's book (Set Your Voice Free). I understand that he was a student of Riggs, and perhaps that is the source of his ideas; but I at least found his book much, much more usable. I have taken singing lessons since then from a professional voice coach, and I must say that her approach (which has given me excellent results) is a lot more accessible than Riggs, as well. So, if you are a semi-professional singer with years of experience and the ability to sing very fast scales, this book may be quite useful. For other people, I would say strongly: give it a miss.

Book Description
Tourism is both an important component of modern life and a highly lucrative industry for many countries, yet its importance has been generally unrecognized in the academic arena. In The Tourist Gaze John Urry examines the concept of tourism from a sociological perspective, demonstrating that tourism is a unique and central element in contemporary society. With his primary focus on the changing nature of tourism, Urry reveals its connection to the broader cultural changes of postmodernism. The Tourist Gaze is essential reading not only for scholars and researchers in sociology, but to all those interested in the social, cultural, and geographical analysis of contemporary society. "It is a readable and stimulating account of many aspects of the sociology of contemporary tourism. . . .shows very wide reading and a good deal of critical reflection on personal experience. . . .covers a wide diversity of topics, with fascinating anecdotes and examples. . . .For anybody interested academically or professionally in tourism (and indeed in contemporary society), this book is well worth reading. It should give you lots of ideas, challenge several of your preconceptions and help keep you up to date with intellectual fashions." --Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design "Provocative . . . . Comprehensive . . . . Trendy . . . . In reading through the author's analysis of these tourisms and the industry that has emerged to serve them, one has the feeling of being brought up to date on all the latest developments. . . . Readers should find something of value in this forward-looking book." --Tourism Management "... a very sensible and down-to-earth analysis of social restructuring. . . .Most obviously it is a useful overview for students of tourism and recreation whether sociologists, geographers or on specialist courses." --Area "This broad-ranging and accessible book will be essential reading not only to scholars and researchers in the sociology of leisure and consumption but to all those interested in the social, cultural and geographical analysis of contemporary society." --Espaces & Societes "Applause is due to John Urry. He has taken tourism seriously. And he has written a book that will help guide a new generation of enquiry on the topic. The author presents what, for geographers unfamiliar with recent sociological writings, is an illuminating and stimulating amalgam of concepts drawn from the traditions of semiotics, political economy and analysis of deviance. . . .useful. . . .interesting commentaries. . . .important. . . .provocative. . . .exciting. . . .insightful." --Progress in Human Geography
Customer Reviews:
the tourist gaze:leisure and travel in contemporary societie.......2000-05-30
This book is about pleasure, about holidays, tourism and travel, abouthow and why for short periods people leave their normal place of workand residence. Book is about how in different societies and especially whithin different social groups in diverce historical periods the tourist gaze has changed ahd developed. Gaze presupposes a system of social activities. In 13th -14th centuries pilgrimages had become a wide spread phenomenon. At the end of 17th century the Grand Tour had firmly established for sons of aristrocracy and by late 18th century for the sons of professional middle class.Between 1600 and 1800,treties on travel shifted from a scholastic emphasis on touring as an opportunity for discourse,to travel as eyewitness observation. Character of the tour itself shifted , from the earlier 'Classical Grand Tour'based on emotionally neutral observation and recording galleries, museums and high cultural artifacts,to the 19th century'Romantic Grand Tour'which saw the emergence of scenic tourism and much more private and passionate experience and beauty. the growth of mass tourism represents a democretisation of travel. Tourist sites can be classified in terms of three dichotomies:romantic /collective, historical /modern, authentic/ inauthentic. There is a universalisation and socialisation of the tourist gaze in the postmodern cultures.

Very insightful.......2005-11-18
This book provides a very insightful view of sport. The book does not male bash as another reviewer suggested. Instead it provides a glimpse into various areas of sport and the problems that exist. It provides a full range of views and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book!
This book sucks.......2003-11-25
This book is one of the worst cases of feminist propaganda and male bashing that I have ever had the chance to review. This book is loaded with problems that are present in society and the author seems to make sure that it is blamed on sports and men who participate in sports. If you where looking for a well balanced text on sports look else where because you will find no other opinion but the authors and the feminist in this book. The major reason that I do not like this book is because it blames men for everything that is wrong and makes sports out to be just this real evil event we participate in. Much of the information in this book is dated as well with much of the case studies done primarily in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, which makes much of the information irrelevant. It ignores any other point of view and is completely biased and is a dishonest book that passes its information off as absolutes but rarely backs up any of its claims. This is a Feminist propaganda book plain and simple and should not be considered anything else.
A wonderful glimpse into the scholarly perspective on sport........2001-01-30
My students use this text as an introduction to the scholarly world of sports. This is not a collection of empirical studies, but nor is it merely an anecdotal bashing of sport as an institution.
A more international scope would strengthen the book, but what is here is thoughtfully organized and well presented.

Book Description
This introductory textbook discusses the major theories and debates within the sociology of leisure. Illustrated throughout with real-world examples, the new edition has been completely re-written to take into account new developments in the area. Subjects covered include: how leisure is
changing in post-modern times; how and why work-life balance has become an important issue; whether women are still the disadvantaged sex in respect of access to leisure; whether leisure has answers to the problems of ageing populations, and whether leisure-based lifestyles are becoming significant
sources of social and personal identity. The book also examines whether leisure is being over-whelmed by commercialised consumer cultures.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to highlight new trends in research on women's leisure. Comparisons drawn between countries at different stages of socioeconomic development demonstrate fascinating similarities and also many differences. Women's leisure is still constrained by traditional ideologies and gender relations, but there is evidence that leisure may also provide the opportunity for liberating effects such as empowerment and autonomy. Leisure may thus act as an agent of positive social change. This book has been developed from a multinational study involving fifteen diverse countries and set up within the framework of the Research Commission of the World Leisure and Recreation Association. A wide range of sociocultural experiences are reported in chapters on Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Morocco, Spain, the U.S.A. and U.K. Containing many original insights, the book is aimed at advanced students and research workers in leisure studies, women's studies, sociology and related disciplines.

The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book (Non-Designer's Series) is an excellent guide for beginners who want to learn the essentials of scanning images and printing professional-looking publications. Authors Robin Williams and Sandee Cohen are two well-known desktop publishing (DTP) experts who have written a number of acclaimed computer-graphics books, and here they do an outstanding job of distilling the core elements of scanning, manipulating, and outputting images from high-tech, esoteric details.
Williams and Cohen commence their tour of scanning and printing by explaining how to plan your project. They begin by encouraging you to choose your paper, colors, graphics, binding, number of folds and copies, and printing methods. Then they introduce you to basic DTP and business issues like resolution, paper size, print area, cost of goods, fonts, and PostScript. Their highly rudimentary approach even includes a discussion of the type of printing device necessary to complete your project and whether you will need to use an inkjet, laser, dye-sublimation, or thermal wax printer. From there, they look to the essentials of commercial printing, finding a print shop, working within a budget, and using processes such as letterpress, flexography, and gravure.
Subsequent chapters delve into computer issues like software applications commonly used for DTP projects and how they handle color modes, raster images, resolution, vector images, and file formats. You also tackle color issues such as process color printing, using spot colors and duotones, and specifying the number of colors in a publication.
Image acquisition plays a big role in completing any project, and the authors provide helpful tips for using scanners, digital cameras, Kodak Photo CD-ROMs, stock photography, and clip art. Finally, you study printer topics such as using high-res output, working with service bureaus, determining output specs such as client and delivery information, writing film specs, using printer's marks, understanding resolution and linescreen issues, trapping, and proofing your job. There's also a preflight checklist to help you determine whether you've thought everything through. At the end of the book, you get quizzes or projects for most of the chapters as well as a list of resources for more information. --David Wall

Customer Reviews:
Non-Designer's Scan & Print Book.......2005-09-04
This is a great book for anyone interested in Graphic Design. I purchsed this book for a Graphic Design class and read almost the entire book before the class started. It has very helpful information for dealing with print shops. It is easy to read and understand.
should be updated.......2005-05-13
It`s good to have around but this book made on a Powermac 8500 (using Pagemaker!) does feel dated in every sense of the word..PDF - the professional print standard nowadays - is poorly covered. Just one page with useless basic information. The writers do not mention anything about Open Type fonts or Indesign. There's not much about dia scanners, sizes and resolutions either.
All in all there's a lot to learn here but the information given often stays a bit on the surface or is simply not up to date. Especially for people who have some experience in the field and are not living in the past..
Not Just For Non-Designers.......2004-09-21
The non-designer title is actually a bit of a misnomer. Don't let this title dissuade you even if you have spent years in the industry (like myself). Unless you are very very knowledgable of the print-production process, this book will have a lot to teach you.
Don't let the hokey design of this book make you believe that it does not contain a wealth of knowledge...it does.
Great book!!.......2003-10-22
I was a technical trainer for four years and was in charge of teaching classes such as color theory, digital printing, scanning etc. I really loved this book because it put everything together for me after about 10 months of scraping information from a lot of different sources. You can't go wrong with this book.
Pithy.......2002-12-11
These ladies have put together a very clear, concise, comprehensive handbook for the non-pro publisher. They walk you through all the essentials of desktop publishing, and all your choices, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of each.
