Book Description
Do films made by women comprise a "counter-cinema" radically different from the dominant tradition? Feminist film critics contend that women filmmakers do present from a distinctive vision, or "countershot," and Lucy Fischer argues persuasively for this view. In rich detail this book relates the idea of a counter-cinema to theories of intertextuality and locates it in the broad context of recent feminist film, literary, and art criticism. Fischer also employs an original critical model of the dialogue between women's cinema and film tradition in the very organization of the book. Each chapter discusses a theme or genre (such as the musical, the "double," the myth of womanhood, and the figure of the actress), counterposing two or more works--from the feminist and from the dominant cinema. What emerges is a fascinating picture of a women's film tradition that not only addresses but reworks and remakes the mainstream cinema.
Fischer successfully combines two main strains of feminist criticism: the deconstructive critique of the dominant culture from a feminist standpoint and the study of a feminist counterculture. Examining films from Persona and The Lady from Shanghai to Girlfriends and Sisters, or the Balance of Happiness, the book offers fresh interpretations of individual works and can, incidentally, serve as an introduction to the field of feminist film criticism.

New Orleans In The Fifties
ASIN: 0882897365 |
Book Description
"New Orleans in the Thirties" offers a nostalgic view of life in New Orleans half a century ago through photographs and reminiscences. It was a time when Robert Maestri was mayor, the St. Charles streetcar made a complete loop, and the Pelicans won the Dixie Series in baseball. Moreover, it was a time when doctors made house calls and women donned gloves to go shopping.
Fascinating period photographs accompany intimate and loving descriptions of the Crescent City of the thirties, capturing the mood and magic of that decade. This volume brings to life the New Orleans of the past and allows the reader to discoveror rediscoverthe character of that time and place.
The author's recollections will appeal to non-New Orleanians, that is, to anyone who grew up in America during the depression era.
She recalls, for example, the leisurely pace of pre-television society in which radio held a powerfully unique role, as well as the headline fashions of the day and the cultural mores that now may seem quaint to many.

Encyclopedia Magica is a MUST!.......2004-07-08
Encyclopedia Magica vols 1-4 has to be one of the BEST Dungeons and Dragons accessories ever made and a definite must-have for every DM!
Within its 1664 pages, one finds magical item after magical item from various different worlds; from Oerth, Krynn, Toril and many others. It is a vast compilation of items and artifacts that have been published over the years in modules, adventures, accessories, magazines etc and are now presented in compact form for the convenience of us, the players. Presented alphabetically, with very good descriptions- including stating the origin- and with very nice art, Encyclopedia Magica is a great addition to anyone's collection. Myself, I proudly display my copies on my shelves for all to see and for me to admire.
In short, if you don't have the four Encyclopedia Magica volumes, GET THEM! It might take a bit of searching to locate the copies, but it's well worth it!
The hardcover is not a hardcover.......2002-11-20
Amazon misleadingly lists the first printing of this book as a hardcover. This series was NEVER printed in hardcover form. The book listed as a hardcover is actually the original "bible" or "fancy" edition of the book. It comes with a faux-leather vinyl cover, fancy bible-quality paper, and two ribbon bookmarks that are sewn into the binding.
Later printings (published after TSR was bought by Wizards of The Coast) have an embossed heavy-paper cover, lower-quality paper for the pages, and no bookmarks. These printings are billed as "softcover" by Amazon.
There are no other versions than these two.
Great DM Tool.......2001-09-15
The must have collection of magic items. Works great if you know what you need. Just have a piece of paper handy while browseing. You may find an amusing item and need to note the page number.
good books.......2001-03-27
these books have just about anything you could imagine and more.
This is an excellent resource..........2001-03-26
...for harried DMs. I use it (obviously) for seeding my dungeons with treasure, but I also use it for ideas when creating new adventures. Unless your campaign is so magic-heavy that new magic items inspire yawns, I recommend this book. Please ignore the fact that someone did a "find and replace" on the word "mage" so that it would read "wizard." The result being that words like "image" became "imwizard."

Too much ground to be covered, but ambitious nonetheless.......2000-05-02
This wonderful book has an ambitious scope - not only does it have a well-detailed description of the first magic item-selling shop ever published by TSR, it also includes the gold piece and experience point values of thousands of magic items - with hundreds of illustrations to enhance play! (So what does a currach look like, exactly, anyway?) Even better, from a collector's point of view, is the TSR Product List - a summary of every single release ever put out by TSR from the very beginning (1974) to 1992, complete with product codes. A veritable treasure trove of reference information for the discriminating DM!

Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile mostly for completists.......2001-12-16
Volume 2 covers Mirage, Visions, 5th Edition, Weatherlight, Portal, and Arena League (only 1 page for this last). As always, this volume covers ONLY those expansions released between the publication of the 1st and 3rd volumes of the encyclopedia, and ends with a "Deckbuilder's Indexes" section. This last is the only reference to other expansions of Magic, so it actually isn't useful anymore; the deckbuilder information for the most current volume should be used instead. Frankly, this volume should not have been released until a few more expansions were out; it's skimpy, but if you want complete coverage of all Magic expansions, you're pretty much trapped; the 2 stars are for the material not available in other volumes.
The introductory material (i.e., the section before the expansions are presented) is a bare minimum in this volume: "How to Use this Guide" and "A Visual Guide to Magic Cards". The book isn't intended to teach a newcomer to play the game, or to explain much of Magic strategy; seek elsewhere for that sort of thing. On the other hand, each expansion covered in Volume 2, as usual, is provided with its own introduction, describing any new twists added for that set (including new types of decks that came about as a result), any noteworthy cards in that set, and a very brief description of the storylines affected by the expansion). Consequently, the entertainment value of the introductions is in inverse proportion to the number of broken cards in the expansion and the severity of the flaws, so the introductions in this volume are much more bland than those of Volume 1.
For example, Mirage's introduction, the longest in the book, covers the introduction of "instant enchantment" and "Charm" cards, and two special abilities introduced with this expansion, "flanking" and "phasing". The descriptions of these characteristics compare them with pre-existing (i.e., volume 1) spells and game mechanics, so you need to be familiar with Magic to get anything out of this. Similarly, new cards introduced as toned-down versions of old spoiler cards don't come with a detailed description of the old card (e.g. Final Fortune vs. old Time Walk). The story line description is given in 4 paragraphs, padded with lots of white space, followed by two equally padded pages of details of famous Mirage cards: Grinning Totem, Celestial Dawn, Hammer of Bogardan, Maro, Tombstone Stairwell, and Political Trickery.
After each expansion's introduction, all its individual cards are listed in alphabetical order, shown at about 3/4 actual size. The versions of Magic that included those cards (at the time of printing) are specified, as well as any errata. The artwork came out fairly well, but the flavor text for red cards is hard to read. My copy suffers from other printing problems as well (the non-flavor text came out blurred for some Mirage cards). Each card's name is printed separately below the card, but it's annoying to pay money for this.
The best book I have ever bought.......2001-07-02
The collectable card game Magic: The Gathering was first released in 1993. Since then, dozens of expansion editions have been created and discontinued. This first Encyclopedia (made in 1996) shows every card from the first 8 editions - from Arabian Nights to Alliances (made in 1996) - as well as the whole 4th Edition (the Basic set at the time). Most interestingly of all the cards that were Discontinued before the 4th Edition are also displayed. All of the cards pictured in the book have been out of print for at least half a decade, so this is most likely the only place where you will be able to see them. The guide is well made, all in colour, official looking, and excellently laid out by the people who created the game. The card images have been shrunk by about 25% so that 12 of them can be fitted onto a side, however, the artwork and text are still clear. The rarity of each card is also detailed. As well as the encyclopedia images, there is a foreward by the game's creator, an introduction to each set (with each sets best cards highlited), deckbuilder's indexes, images of promotional cards, misprinted cards and oddities, a history of the game, and a visual guide to Magic cards (teaching how to identify ones from different sets, e.g. cards in the Alpha set have more rounded edges). I have owned this book for three years and I still refer to it regularly....
Magic: The Gathering Encyclopaedia.......2001-02-22
What is the difference between Vol 1 and this book? Part of selling a book is to give the buyer an idea of what the book is about. Do I need to buy Vol 1? Is Vol 2 incorporating Vol 1 or an addition to? Unfortunately, I can't pluck the book cover off the monitor screen and read the back blurb to make that judgment for myself.
An Encyclopedia, Nothing More.......2000-08-21
This is a very good encyclopedia, with up to date cards, and even a discontinued & misprint section, both of which are interesting. The only problem with this book is that it is an encyclopedia. Nothing much else, besides an introduction to the book and each section, which should be expected. It gives no tips on, forsay, how to use the cards, or something to that effect. Overall it's a good book, if you're looking for an encyclopedia.
The first Official Guide.......2000-08-12
Among all 4 volume published, this is the most comprehensive, it contains every cards in magic during that time and this is the first - First Official Guide. Before having this guide, collectors have to keep track with Duelist or Inquest for a full list (in text). This book is not only a good book with all coloured pictures, it is also the best reference for any Magic Collectors. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Much less than expected.......2007-09-27
Enticed by its title while looking for a book I could use as a quick lookup reference for T-SQL commands/functions I bought this book among a bunch of other T-SQL books and was thoroughly disappointed by its poor organistaion (commands and functions are listed in some obscure groupings instead of alphabetically) and its even poorer print quality (some pages and images are so blurred that they are barely readable). Out of the several other books I bought this one ranks dead last.
Transact-SQL Desk Reference.......2005-08-12
Just the kind of book a person needs in their reference library. Well indexed. A complete explanation of each SQL command with examples. 20 pages covering XML, 781 pages in all. It is also made of quality material so it can be handled frequently without falling apart.
Great reference.......2005-04-03
The back of this book claims that "This is the SQL reference you'll reach for first!" and I can personally support their claim. It is easily the best organized SQL reference that I have encountered. It contains alphabetical listings of all SQL data types and their related functions, in-depth instruction on data definition (create, alter, drop, etc.) and comprehensive descriptions and examples of all data manipulation methods (insert, update, delete, etc.).
The only possible drawback of this book is that it is not, nor is it intended to be, an instruction manual for SQL. The book cuts right to the point, and only tells you exactly what you need to know. For beginners, this book would not be a good starting point, but for people with at least some exposure to SQL, this book will probably never leave your desk.
Very Good Content - Not So Good Index.......2005-01-07
This book is exactly what it's title says, it's a reference book. If you need brief descriptions and syntax for T-SQL statements and functions, this is a great book to have on your book shelf. However, the index is very weak. It is essentially an alphabetical listing of functions, so you need to know the name of a function to find it. For example, if you wanted to add an INDEX to a table, you would probably look under "I" for "INDEX.". But, you wouldn't find what you were looking for. You would need to look under "C" because the function is "CREATE INDEX." But, if you know what you are looking for, you'll find it in this book.
Scott Hill.......2003-12-23
Excellent examples and clear explanations. 12/22/2003
This book is exactly what I was looking for, an extension of Books Online with extra clear examples and explanations. Books Online is often still my first reference because it is convenient and does an excellent job. But when I need a second source for more information I now turn to Transact-SQL Desk Reference. If I still don't find what I need then I have to go to user groups or other external sources, but so far that has only happened once.
The tutorial in the first chapter is a nice overview for those who need it, but an advanced user can skip past it and go straight to the reference material starting in Chapter 2. The index is excellent and so far has never failed to put me in the right place to find what I want. I particularly like the extra examples of how to use different features. And the explanation of how to do disk layout to help restorability and performance is well beyond what I expected in a reference book. I plan to use the layout presented as a starting point for configuring my production database.
It could be argued that the syntax definitions taken from Books Online could be omitted, though in some cases the book has a better explanation of some of the items. All in all, it is definitely worth the price.
