Book Description

Although it may not be the goal of every filmmaker, most of us learn something when we watch movies. They make us think. They make us feel. Occassionally they have the power to transform lives. In her book Reel To Real, bell hooks talks back to films she has watched, as a way to engage the pedagogy of cinema--the way film teaches its audience.

bell hooks comes to film, not as a film critic but as a cultural critic, fascinated by the issues movies raise--the ways cinema depicts race, sex, and class. Reel To Real not only brings together hooks' classic essays on films such as Paris Is Burning or the infamous "Whose Pussy Is It" essay about Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It, but also newer work on Pulp Fiction, Crooklyn and Waiting To Exhale. hooks also examines the world of independent cinema. Here, conversations with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Julie Dash, and Arthur Jaffa are linked with critical essays, including a provocative piece on Larry Clark's Kids, to show the radical possiblity of cinema--that it can function subversively, as much as it functions to maintain the status quo.

In its review of Outlaw Culture, the New York Times wrote of bell hooks: "She brings to the task of cultural criticism an astute eye and courageous spirit..." In Reel To Real hooks enhances our visual experience of movies, enabling us to see in a new way. Her work, like the best films of our time, provoke thought and create a context for dialogue. The essays and conversations collected here bear witness to the passion and pleasure of critical engagement.

bell hooks is as critical and analytical as ever. Of all bell hooks' books that I've read, this is the best. The synopsis above says it all. Now all you have to do is read it. Filmmakers, pop culturalists, and people who think will be in pig-heaven

5 out of 5 stars bell hooks really gives good information in this one!.......2000-12-25

An excellent book that really gives you something to think about as she examines race, sex and class in America through the movies. I really enjoyed reading her feminist views, and her interviews with filmmakers Charles Burnett, Camille Billops, and AJ (Arthur Jafa).

Description from the book back cover:

RUGGED RANCHER - Allison Hathoway had never met a man like Gene Nelson. He was a dark horse - a man running wild - or so all her friends told her. But Allison knew he was a man with secrets ... and one who had been hurt. Her heart went out to him. SHY LADY OF MYSTERY - Lovely Allison was a lure that Gene couldn't resist. The enigmatic beauty aroused a tenderness he'd never known - and a passion he couldn't fight. But could he convince Allison to risk forever on Nelson's brand of loving?

3 out of 5 stars Despite Being Abridged This is a Good Audiobook!.......2005-10-17

I listened to an audio book recording for Diana Palmer's Nelson's Brand and I thought it was good. I liked Diana Palmer's story, I liked the characters Gene and Alison and I liked the audio book and I think the narrator was good but I do wish this was an unabridged audio book instead of abridged but that's my only complaint and I recommend this book in either regular book form or audio book if you like audio books and don't mind this one being abridged. Even though it's abridged I would definitely think of keeping this audiobook!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF HER BEST.......2004-04-19

Good book Gene is a mans mans. Lots of passion between the two.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not a keeper........2002-04-18

It wasn't bad but it wasn't the best audio cassette recording I have ever listened too and I didn't find it to be a keeper, I just didn't get that warm fuzzy feeling that makes you feel all happy while reading a nice romance book or listening to the audio cassette recording.

5 out of 5 stars Diana Palmer at her best!.......1999-08-19

Like with any author, some stories she writes are better than others. This one is fabulous. Allison knows she is way over her head with the intense, passionate Gene but she just can't seem to stop seeing him. His experience overwhelms her and is the eventual cause of his guilt and anger. But the way Gene falls for Allison is sure to melt your heart. Pick this one.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THESE LANDER COWBOYS!.......2003-07-18

Ah, a world champion Bull riding rodeo cowboy, Brand Lander. He thought Toni was a buckle bunny. Loved the way he was willing to be seduced.

Antonio Swenson needed a pregnancy or a husband to claim her grandfathers' ranch. Twenty-four and a virgin [good for her]and expecting to be hit by men, she wasn't sure she could follow through with her plan. Brandon Lander was not her choice for stud work.

She needed someone gentle who would not follow her with any claims. She did not want a husband. Be careful what you ask for as you may get more than you bargain for.

Ah sigh, what a piece of work. But was she pregnant?

Back at the ranch her troubles begin. No money, no workers and it just keeps getting better. She slowly gains extraordinary knowledge of Brand as he becomes a man she could fall in love with. But he has his own demons to work out.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- you should really enjoy this one and come back for more -- Look for brother Caleb in the next story.

This was a real page turner. Once I started it, I found it hard to put down. Brand was just the right mix of tough, sexy cowboy and sensitive male. You'll want to rope and brand him for your own!!

You'll enjoy this author and will want this book for your keeper shelf.

      Book Description

Brands identify products and services. Yet a brand is much more than a "brand name" or a "brand logo" on a "brand-name product." Brands reflect individual and collective desires that go far beyond a product's utilitarian benefit. Brands are found in every business and in every market. The sense of fascination they evoke is the key to the success of such brands. Brands & Desires presents 25 vivid examples of the link between brands and desires, beginning with The Rolling Stones (desire: coolness), and continuing on to include Apple computers (religion), De Beers diamonds (fidelity), Ikea furnishings (growing up), Freitag bags (individuality), Marlborough cigarettes (freedom), Benetton clothing (justice), Red Bull softdrink (action), and Greenpeace (resistance).

2 out of 5 stars I did learn a few things from this book............2005-09-02

I cant give this book 1 star because I did learn a few things from it, however having said that I learnt a lot more by 'customising' the exercises and playing with the various tools myself as I went through.

The other reviewers are quite correct in that there has been no proof-reading or technical editing of this book whatsoever. The mistakes are plentiful and unless you have enough knowledge of Flash, are complete showstoppers. One example I can think of is that you are instructed to create a folder for the catalog swf's and call it catalog.Yet when you are instructed to set the source swf in the catalog page to load into the loader, you are told to type in catalog.fla Having put all of those files in a subfolder (as instructed), it wont work unless the path you type is catalog/catalog.fla. Simple example I know but there are enough of these things going on through the book to make it really frustrating. I had some actionscript that wouldnt work so I had a look at the completed file on the CD...well knock me down if there isnt actionscript missing from the book!!

The funny thing is that even when I tried to preview the books completed example files off of the CD, I STILL got error messages that required debugging which means that you are on your own if you want to complete the book from start to finish.

Anyway, this book was a majorly flawed disappointment and waste of a nights drinking money. The framework is there and with great content correctly proof read, with consistency applied throughout, it could have been excellent. I have used other TFS books and they have been excellent, the Fireworks one in particular was a great starting point for me. This book has tarnished the perception I had of the series and having read the reviews for the Actionscript TFS I am loathe to buy another one....

2 out of 5 stars Lacking, but ok.......2005-08-30

This book has some good information, but is poorly written and fails to explain much about what is going on in the tutorials. With Macromedia's commitment to quality products, I'd expect something much better to bear the name "Training From the Source."

There are MANY typos and grammatical errors. Did anyone proofread this thing?

The book is not all bad, however. I learned a lot from it, but felt like too much was left out. Simple, basic concepts were explained repeatedly, but some of the more important stuff had little to no explanation. Tutorials instruct you to do or write certain important things, without explaining why, or what is going on.

Overall, I think the book is worth about half the cover price. For more in-depth explanation, check out any of the Russell Chun Flash books. His "Flash Advanced" goes together well with this book.

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners - two / three stars maybe for experienced users.......2005-08-01

I am now editing my earlier review (below). I have revisited this book after completing training in Dreamweaver, and am now therefore more familiar with the look and logic behind these Macromedia applications. Because of my previous training, I am now able to follow the lessons - and am finding the book useful. However - I still feel this book suffers from extremely poor editing. It often directs you to click on menus or select tools that it has not yet introduced. A beginner would have no idea what to do...

            Previous review:

I have used the Adobe "Classroom in a Book" series to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. and found the texts to be fairly interesting, useful, and easy to follow. I bought "Macromedia Flash MX 2004 : Training from the Source" expecting something similar, and could not have been more disappointed.

It's extremely dull, POORLY edited, and most importantly, nearly impossible to follow. I gave up in the second chapter.

According to the credits, this book did have an editor and a technical editor, but I find that difficult to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Macromedia Flash MX 2004 : Training from the Source (Training from the Source).......2005-07-25

An excellent beginners guide for non programmers.

3 out of 5 stars fair and mixed.......2005-07-07

This is a book which leads you through a web design project. Like the TFS books on all the Studio programs this one begins with a single goal, that by the end there will be a whole website. The lessons then cover all that is related to putting together a website. For folks who are not interested in using Flash for website design, this book is definitely not the best.

For folks who are... well, my opinion is mixed. Yes, the examples are clearly written, and there is generally a good order of the lessons which help one to better understand the complexity of Flash. The problem is really related to the project itself.

Instead of focusing on the brilliance and uniqueness of Flash, this project teaches you how to mimic what would really be a better site done in Dreamweaver, or even Fireworks. Such Flash based sites as jkrowling.com are wonderfully creative. This project looks like any other html based site, except it uses Flash. You learn to mimic html and javascript in creating drop down menus, and other things, leaving me with a sense that I learned... but I am still missing on what Flash is really built to do. There's a complete lack of creativity, and that's what Flash is made for. I don't want to spend twenty hours going through a book that makes me think I could better use Dreamweaver for the same effect.

With this is the tendency to jump from all too basic "make a square and resize it" lessons, to doing complex dynamic interaction which goes beyond an introduction to the program.

This book is about making a project rather than building a solid foundation in Flash. The project they choose is rather dull and doesn't even come close to the creativity found in flash based sites, nor even the fun that the TFS book on Actionscript reveals.

So yes, one does learn and it is well written. But, one is left knowing there are tremendous gaps in foundational knowledge which other books will better cover. When I finished both the books on Fireworks and Dreamweaver I was left thinking I had a good grasp, which could be built through personal practice. With this book I feel like I learned, but am left reaching for different books to really introduce the program in a fuller way.

With so many books on Flash out there, this likely isn't the best choice. Unless, of course, your interest is in using Flash to make a site which looks just like an html based site. Then, it's a fine selection.

            1 out of 5 stars Hate it.......2007-01-19

Picked up this book years ago and hated it. Macromedia should be ashamed of how bad this book is. You would think a company can turn out a decent instructional book about their own product! After conversing with many people in the Information Architecture and Web Usability fields, I am discovering that many do not find Macromedia books in general to be helpful, especially when compared to others in the market. As for me, I will never buy another book published by Macromedia.

            1 out of 5 stars God awful!.......2006-04-30

The author and editor obviously did not earn a degree in communication, but programming. By the middle of the third chapter the author must believe the reader is a certified programmer.

I am reasonability intelligent; I am a CPA with BFA and BBA degress, but gee, only after reading her paragraphs 4 to 5 times do I get it. And her follow along examples are torture. More time and paper should have been devoted to thorough scipt examples rather than abridged.

5 out of 5 stars Great shot from Macromedia Press!!!.......2005-09-15

[**this review was made by Denise Maitan from AIR User Group**]With step-by-step exercises, explanations, notes, tips and complementary pictures, Macromedia's book "Flash Mx Professional 2004 - application development" encompasses the simplest functions flash offers through to the most complex, like web services, XML e remoting services.
Furthermore, the book is accompanied by a DVD-Rom with files containing prepared exercises and 30-day trial versions of Flash MX 2004 and Flash MX Professional 2004.
The book is really well structured, with instructions before each exercise detailing what the reader will learn, how long each exercise should take and where to find the related exercises on the DVD.
The book is recommended for whom desires greater knowledge of Actionscript programming. It also give guidance in the use of dynamic + interactive product applications - through the RIA (Rich Internet Application) concept - and provides preparation for Macromedia development certification. A very good training manual.

2 out of 5 stars Author Got a Little Lost in Own Steps.......2005-05-06

I'll be brief. It teaches efficient programming and good tips for beginner programmers but don't try to follow the steps outlined in the book. Seems that author got lost in his own steps. For example page 144 step 8 doesn't indicate that you should place the onChanged code in the "calcObject.as" file, instead it says that you sould place it after the onKillFocus event. I lost a lot of time trying to figure out why my program wasn't working (wanting to practice debugging) until I finally looked at the files in the DVD. I'd say just read the book and test using the files that came in the DVD if things don't work.

            5 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-04-13

This is actually a very good book. The flow is a little wierd, but it covers a lot of ground not covered in other books. I found the conversion from ActionScript 1.0 to ActionScript 2.0 not a problem, except in one area - flash remoting and ActionScript 2.0. But for flash remoting I have found the MM docs almost totally useless and no other sources adequate. Coming from a programming background, I found Stallons' treatment of some of the many AS quirks, and that strange Flash object, the MovieClip, and how to use it in AS, very helpful. I guess the standard book padding of loops, conditional logic, functions, objects, etc. is unavoidable, but I could do without it. I could really have used a better coverage of the 2.0 components, but there again the MM docs are pretty bad on this topic and I haven't found a book that does cover these.

So I would recommend this book, but the jump may be hard for a first time programmer who is using AS 2.0 and needs to rely heavily on the "copy and paste code" learning process.

            Book Description

Sure, you can use Flash MX 2004 without being a master programmer, but as any Flash developer worth his or her salt will tell you, you're not tapping all of its power unless you're taking advantage of its scripting language "ActionScript 2.0" which offers a more robust programming model and better object-oriented programming support than ever before. Here to take the fear factor out of learning it are Flash veterans and best-selling authors Derek Franklin and Jobe Makar, who demonstrate that scripting is an instinctual process you already know by translating real-life activities into ActionScript scripts. In these pages, you'll find methodologies and techniques for building over 40 real-life Flash ActionScript projects, including sample games, --- applications, Web sites, and more. New in this edition are coverage of ActionScript 2.0, Web services, Components, Printing, Video, and more. On the companion CD, you'll find all the project files and images you need to complete each project.

Iam taking a class right now thats using this book. Iam almost done with chapter 2 and i have to say that iam completely lost. This book is by no means good for a beginer. I will probably just finish the book for the class then have to find another book that breaks it down better. I find that it throws concepts at you way to fast and you get to the point that your just typing the code thats in the book. I took a couse in flash using the book Flash MX 2004 Hands on Training by Rosanna Yeung. That book was easy to follow and understand and provides a great foundation for learning the layout of flash and design. Touches just alittle on action script toward the end of the book, and now i got this book to help me learn action script but i don't think thats going to happen using this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Way for Beginners to Learn.......2006-01-05

I've been working through the Franklin and Makar book for several weeks now. For someone like myself who has little programming experience and no previous knowledge of ActionScript, it is an excellent learning aid. The authors take the reader step-by-step, starting with simple projects and progressing to more advanced ones.

The authors say up front that this book assumes a basic knowledge of how Flash works. They focus on ActionScript, not how to set up objects on the stage, for example. So, if you're completely new to Flash, you might want to work through one of the excellent tutorials that are available for learning Flash MX 2004.

Having an English-instructor and professional-writer background, I'm sensitive to language usage. The authors' style is very conversational, a plus in this case. I did not notice the writing errors that one reviewer mentions. Nor did I detect the skipping around that another reviewer alluded to.

If you purchase a used copy, be sure that the CD is included. It contains two .fla versions of each Flash project: one without the ActionScripts, which you are asked to add the scripts to; and a completed version with all the ActionScripts intact.

I dropped one star from my rating for a few reasons. First, I wish they had included a .pdf version of the book, which would be much easier to read than the somewhat small print in the book. (I used the sample .pdf version of the first lesson, available online, to begin my studying and was sorry to have to switch over to the book when that lesson ended.)

Secondly, the authors fail to suggest that the reader first open the completed version of a Flash project to see what it does before analyzing the scripting.

Thirdly, the authors seem to think that typing in the ActionScript is a good learning exercise and make a point of directing the user to do that throughout the book. This approach may work for some learners, but for me it would just be a tedious exercise. Instead, I want to focus on the logic behind the scripting. So, instead of typing a script into its project, I copied and pasted each script from the completed Flash file into a Word file where I built my own set of notes.

My final reason for dropping one star is that in some cases I had to go to the internet to get further explanations on a topic the authors were discussing. This is a relatively minor issue because no book can cover everything, and the essense of learning is to seek out what you want to know.

Overall, this book has met my expectations and is doing exactly what I wanted it to do--taking me by baby steps through the mysteries of ActionScript 2.

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely surperb!.......2005-12-13

I was initially put off buying this book after reading the negative comments below. But, after borrowing a library copy along with other books on AS2, I decided to buy this one. It is for beginners but it actually does a better job than more advanced books in explaining some of the intermediate level topics too. It delivers everything it promises in its blurb. The accompanying CD ROM has all the files and graphics needed to complete the tutorials whch cover the full scope of AS2. The scripts work which is great for debugging errors you might have made when completing the exercises. I don't understand why it has been given some negative reviews. As an absolute beginner, I'm delighted with this book and my progress because of it. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time, effort and money.......2005-07-23

I bought the book thinking it would be a great resource for actionscript, but I can not even get through the first project. The exercise is not explained well, and it has some inherent internal problems.

I tried to contact the author via his online forum, but to my surprise the author had not personally answered one question, and he wrote the book; needless to say that was a bust.

All-in-all, I do not suggest buying this book as it is a waste of time, effort and money

            3 out of 5 stars wasnt what i expected.......2005-05-06

Well i ordered this book thinking it would be a great source for all sorts of actionscript uses. Instead i found a book that had a few tutorials in it. Although they were very well written they were to specific and the book didnt cover enough. I would rather something a little more in-depth
