Book Description
When it comes to writing a text for non-music majors, Kamien knows the score. With the care you would expect from the concert pianist he is, Kamien introduces the musical elements and repertoire thoroughly and clearly, without assumptions of prior knowledge but also without condescension. As a teacher at Queens (NY) College, Kamien developed the concept of the Listening Outline, which he incorporated into the first edition of Music: An Appreciation and which he has refined and enhanced in every subsequent edition. This is a text with which students of all levels and backgrounds can feel comfortable.

Book Description
Science and technology in totalitarian regimes is readily associated with images of abusive doctors in concentration camps or dictators controlling genetic resources. But are these cases representative of what constitutes science in totalitarian regimes, or are they anomalies? Based on a synthesis and reinterpretation of recent work, this book presents a balanced view of science in Nazi Germany and Stalin's USSR by examining how politics and culture shaped their science and technology.
Josephson argues that a transformational vision was central to science in these regimes, distinguishing their research from that done under other political systems. In the Soviet Union, biology was to be used to revolutionize agriculture, create a "New Soviet Man," even to tame nature within one generation. In the Third Reich, biology was to secure agriculture self-sufficiency as well as create a nation of pure Aryan gods.
The reception of relativity theory and quantum mechanics suggests that the idealization of science resulted in extrascientific forces coming into play to determine what was "good" and what was "bad" science, eventually leading to the ostracism of physicists who embraced the new physics. In both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, scientists lost their jobs, were arrested, even killed for their scientific beliefs.
In the field of technology, Josephson investigates the role of the state as the prime mover in technological development and the aesthetic of gigantomania acquired by large-scale technologies in totalitarian states: gigantic structures reflecting the efforts of officials to publicly demonstrate the strength, glory, and legitimacy of the regime.
Book Description
A sister and brother's search for their missing parents uncovers a mysterious secret society in an action-filled sea-and-land saga centered in 1920s Shanghai.
For Joshua Mowll, it was the surprise of a lifetime. There, among the archives inherited from his great-aunt Rebecca MacKenzie, was a 1920s journal recounting the thrilling and dangerous adventures of fifteen-year-old Rebecca and her younger brother, Doug, in the wake of their parents' mysterious disappearance in the deserts of China. Now carefully re-created in a lavish volume — complete with cloth binding and a journal-style elastic clasp — the siblings' tale begins aboard the Expedient, their uncle's enigmatic research ship, and moves at a breathless pace through the streets of Shanghai and on to a terrifying island fortress. Along the way, Doug and Becca encounter an ancient order of Chinese mercenaries, a brutal pirate warlord, a feisty Texan heiress, and a stolen cache of a volatile explosive called zoridium. By their saga's end, the intrepid duo has exposed a murderous plot involving their parents and uncovered a high-minded secret society hidden from the world for hundreds of years. Interspersed are such "archival" elements as:
— elaborate diagrams and maps
— vintage photos and illustrations
— documents with stamps, seals, and watermarks
— four full-color gatefolds, the largest a six-page foldout
— extensive appendices and notes
Painstakingly researched and packed with authentic detail, OPERATION RED JERICHO is the first of three nonstop-action tales of intrigue by first-time author Joshua Mowll — historical fiction at its finest.

Wonderful book.......2007-08-19
I read this book when I was 15, and greatly enjoyed it. It is well written, and keeps you reading. It mixes together many things which youth like- swordfights, martial arts, pirates, seafaring, being on their own and on a mission to save their parents... even though it may sound as if it's just a boys book, it's not. My daughter has read it as well and enjoyed it; in fact, she bought the sequel.
A good beginning.......2007-01-03
Let's begin by stating that this book is well designed. The drawings and diagrams of the vehicles, weapons, devices, etc were great. The detail was very interesting and well appreciated.
That being said, I thought the story was good, but not great. I am keeping in mind the fact that this is the first book in a trilogy. I didn't find the two children's characters to be very likable. They lie and go around the adults in the quest to find their parents. I hope the characters are further developed as the story continues.
The story involves the writer who inherits a house full of secret information regarding the Guild of Specialists. The writer publishes the findings from his aunts archives, and thus the story. It is a very good premise, but as I mentioned the characters are a little weak.
I would recommend this books to young readers. The story is paced well and moves quickly. Some of the terms and devices described in the sotry may be a little too technical for the younger group (third graders), but I feel they would still enjoy it.
A Fun Read.......2006-12-08
A very fun and engaging story set in a time and place I know very little about. The artwork, fold-outs and gee-wiz aspects of the story are especially well done. Some of the writing is a little flat; not up to the standards set by the artwork. I bought the book for me and am very pleased to report that one of my boys (age 11) has picked it up and is quite engrossed.
Delightful Book, when is the movie coming out?.......2006-11-16
This book is a lot of fun. Inventive, good characters, not overwritten. Fast paced. One of the more delightful books I've read in a long time. I hope some studio makes a movie out of this. The detail in the illustations, the additional information all makes the story much more full and rich. Can't wait to read the next one.
Full of twists, turns and very cool characters!!!!.......2006-10-25
I love this book. Operation Red Jericho is right up there with Phillip Pullman's Sally Lockhart series. This book is filled with evil villians, really good good guys and a really drawing mystery.
I also loved how Joshua Mowll used Becka's diary, real maps, blueprints, and real bad guys. This is an historical ficition book through and through. I would seriously recomend this book to any Phillip Pullman lovers.
Book Description
Get ready for Book II of the thrilling, novelty-packed Guild of Specialists trilogy.
After being lashed by a typhoon on their uncle's ship, THE EXPEDIENT, intrepid siblings Becca and Doug MacKenzie want nothing more than to escape from the volcanic island on which they're stranded and resume the search for their parents. But their uncle, Captain MacKenzie, seems more concerned with the missing gyrolabe than their missing mother and father, and he refuses to discuss the role the mysterious Guild of Specialists played in their disappearance. As the formidable Kalaxx warriors close in on their hidden cove, Becca and Doug unearth a riddle linked to a 1533 painting, which may hold the key to the Guild's dark secrets and to finding their parents. But how can they possibly solve the puzzle and escape with their lives — before their enemies attack?

Thriling book, can't wait for the last volume.......2007-10-05
My kids loved the two books in the series, they hardly wait for the final volume.
Fantastic.......2007-05-09
My 11-year-old son reads everything he can get his hands on. When I asked him how he liked this book, he thought about it, and finally said,"I would have to say it's the best book I've ever read." 'Nuff said!
Excellent, takes me back to my Youth.......2007-02-09
Having grown up with Edgar Rice Burroughs - this is exacty the sort of high adevnture I loved. These are more sophisticated techically (no need for starnge powers etc). I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and am not disappointed with the second. The presentation ks is superb, with excellent facsimile documents and photographs, made to look like a real journal, beautiful fold out maps and schematics of Ships, and submarines, captivate. The story is fast paced and has and authenticity to it. A real Indiana Jones meets the league of extraordinary gentlemen. Enough to stimulate the imagination of any reader adult or child. t
You Figure it Out.......2007-01-26
The ship was tossed and turned as the typhoon ripped through the South China seas. This is just a little of all the action, adventure, and mystery that happens in this book. Operation Typhoon Shore has great action, but the mystery is even better. For me the mystery is what hooked me, and kept my mind focused on the book. The book left me hanging at the end of each chapter motivating me to read more. Joshua Mowll sets the book up so I found clues in the text, and uncovered a little part of the mystery at a time. When I was reading the book it made me feel like a detective, so it felt like I was in the story.
Another reason I liked this book was because of the lively characters. The author gives each character a vivid description. At some parts during the book I felt like the characters were with me. Also, each character had a purpose, so they weren't just in the story because the author wanted them in it. Instead each character is used for a specific piece of the story that without it the reader would be lost. Finally, the mystery and characters is what kept me reading.
Waiting for Number 3.......2007-01-14
I can't wait for the next addition to this series. For the reluctant reader they will not be able to put this down.

In Unix: Visual QuickStart Guide, the authors take the time to explain correct Unix lingo as well as concepts and processes to be aware of as a daily user. The real-life implication of reading Unix is not only that you won't receive irate messages from your system administrator, but that you'll be able to manipulate your Unix environment, making it a genuinely enjoyable workspace.
For more experienced users, there are plenty of cool tools and shortcuts to make the book worthwhile (sdiff, head, and procmail, for example). The authors provide a generous section on scripting--a good introduction for advanced users who may be spending too much time on repetitive tasks. The authors also touch on how to intelligently include regular expressions in searching, a pleasant addition to an already outstanding section.
Some of the authors' decisions on what to include merit warning, although not enough that users should turn away from this book: the authors only cover the bash, ksh, and csh shells; they focus on only the pico and vi editors--not emacs; and their excellent section on e-mail covers only pine (briefly mentioning that elm really isn't worth its salt for a new user). While the book isn't all-inclusive, it isn't meant to be. The authors make their preferences clear, and for the user, this amounts to a good deal of clarity and time saved. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Customer Reviews:
It is Very nice book offers wealth of useful knowledge !.......2005-07-26
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly: it is very well written and clearly expressed work. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed an advise in someone review and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete UNIX course recorded. These two nicely complement one another. You watch it and you read it. If you didn't catch it from the first try you watch it again and read it again. In two months I found myself confident to that extend that gave advises to our system administrator and he accepted them because there were subjects that he wasn't completely sure. What I can say, in three month I passed my first interview and got a job! Sure it is a way to start there much of more advanced reading that will take over you with a time however these two provide you with the BASIS!
I can't overstate how much I have learned from them. Don't be naive, though. You will have to learn and memorize many things. The fact of owning neither book nor DVD will not make you knowledgeable, but if you will work it trough, trust me, you will surprise many people around!
Nice book, really cool!.......2005-07-22
The book is a real help when you struggle with new operating system's commands and horrible command line syntax. I paired this book with "UNIX Essentials" DVD and can't be happier! Book shows conception the DVD shows complete workflow! WOW! That is really smooth learning.
The book is very well logically organized and easy to navigate and it is free from stupid repetitions that many other books have!
Very practical, reference-like.......2005-02-22
The book is easy to use and understand, good choice for beginners, but might be a bit wordy for advanced users.
Its structure is very similar to a reference book, runs along the UNIX commands in 17 chapters, and provides enough information and examples to their usage. It contains three appendices summarizing the UNIX files and directories, the UNIX commands and their flags. It contains no theoretic essays at all, so if you are interested in the inner working or philosophy of UNIX, this book is not for you.
I liked that it uses a color (red) to distinguish the commands and flags from the output. I was glad to find links to the related topics inside the book, but missed a bibliography. And I missed one or more full chapters paying attention to the most popular implementations such as Solaris, AIX.
Concise yet unseful tricks.......2004-08-19
I found this book has some useful tricks that compensates for the chapters that maybe useless to someone who been using UNIX for sometime. This book made my life easier since I needed a book where I can get some of the useful Unix commands yet a little description with it to help me get by
Helped me through a semester at school.......2004-05-06
Last semester, I found myself in a class that assumed the students were familiar with working in UNIX. However, I was not and was having a very difficult time. Out of desperation, I picked up this book. In no time, I was having a much better time figuring out what to do. UNIX Visual Quickstart Guide was easy to follow. The descriptions were to the point without a bunch of unnecessary words and detail.

Customer Reviews:
Good but already outdated.......2001-08-12
I agree with previous reviewers that this book provides easy-to-follow instructions for learning GIMP. I used it recently to help me devise lesson plans for a 5-week class for children ranging from 8-15 years old! Having it with me to consult during class boosted my confidence, since I had never used GIMP before teaching the class! My only additional comment is that I quickly discovered that GIMP, which is continuously being revised, has new and different features which are not covered in this book. Fortunately, the online manual fills these gaps. Still, I think this book was a good purchase, and I do recommend it to GIMP newbies.
The best beginning GIMP book I've seen........2000-11-01
I'm not a graphic artist, and I don't have time or the desire to read a mammoth tome on image manipulation. What I want is a book that will teach me the basics of GIMP in as little time as possible. This is that book. With this book I was able to get up to speed with most of the basic functions in just a couple of days. This is the best GIMP book I have seen for beginners. My only complaint is that most of the illustrations are in black & white, and the sections on color manipulation, etc. would probably be a little easier to follow with color illustrations. I plan to read the author's book on CorelDRAW in the near future
Excellent and complete introduction........2000-08-05
At the time of this writing, this is easily the best introduction to the GIMP. It covers about 90% of the material in the GIMP for Linux Bible, but the explanations are more concise. I would recommend the other book only if you need coverage of scripting, which this Quickstart doesn't really have.
Finally a GIMP book that's easy to use!.......2000-05-27
This book is *so* easy to use. There are pictures with each step and instructions that are really easy to follow.
Wonderful book!.......2000-05-11
This is an extremely complete guide to the Gimp. Everything you can do in PhotoShop, you can do in the Gimp -- and more! (Plus, the price of the software is right!) Phyllis Davis' book tells how to do anything you might want to do, with easy step by step examples. It is well illustrated. Perhaps the best part is the full color gallery section, showing Gimp art from around the world. If you want to learn to use the Gimp, I highly recommend this book. (Heck, you could learn stuff about PhotoShop from it while you're at it. Phyllis Davis is a wonderful writer, and explains computer graphic concepts and tools very clearly.) If you are just curious about all the fuss about the Gimp (Gnu means images!) check it out, too!
