i don't get it..........2007-08-07
i don't get it... all these glowing reviews and i just can't get through this book for anything! i think the cover states that anyone can read through this book in an evening... something like that. well, maybe i have adult adhd because i couldn't stay interested. it served me best as a prelude to sleep.
Simply Great.......2007-03-26
I already had a very simple understanding of music theory, so some of this stuff I skimmed over, but within the first few pages I learned things that immediately opened my eyes and my mouth in amazement. I found myself several times saying aloud, "So that's what that means!" I was ready to give up on singing in my church choir, but now I feel much more confident and am ready to resume with more vigor.
Learning notation.......2007-01-11
This product helped me to identify and read musical notes in the simplest form. I have learned to identify a whole note from a half and quarter notes, etc. This product is good to have if your serious in your quest to learn how to read musical notations.
A nice review for those returning to the piano.......2006-11-21
This is an interesting, complex, detailed, authoritative, little book that promises 1. In two hours you can read it through and understand the principles involved in reading music and 2. In an evening you can learn to read practically any melody and pick it out on the piano. Amazingly, 1. and 2. worked for me. What worked for me might also work for you. Why not give it a try? Howard Shanet, the author, is more than qualified to teach music as he was a professor of music at Columbia and the conductor of that university's orchestra. But more than music, he knows the ropes through years of experience teaching this subject and actually makes learning easy and fun. In part I, he deals with the all-important and often neglected topic of rhythm and in part II, the important elements of pitch. It all boils down to when to play and what to play. Right? In parts III, IV, & V he puts rhythm and pitch together and introduces the elements of tonality. Along the way, we get brief asides on music history that help fix our memory. Since he explained the bass clef, I shall never forget where it came from and why in shows where F is on the written sheet. Can you guess why ¾ time was considered the perfect time in the middle ages? Something to do with the trinity? You bet. For better results, you should do as I did: work the problems and exercises with a piano so that you can see, feel, and hear what the text is talking about. Actually touching the keys makes all the difference and works lots better than the author's suggested tapping and singing. Despite some key signatures that are blurred and poorly printed, and two mistakes in the answer key on page 169, and the failure to give out the quick and dirty secret for reading any key signature (explained in Piano for Dummies)+, this little gem of a book is highly recommended for novices who need to learn the basics and previously experienced people who need to refresh their memories after a long absence from the keyboard. Also suggested: Paul Hindemith's Elementary Training for Musicians and Blake Neely's Piano for Dummies.
Excellent teaching tool.......2006-07-22
This book was a well thought out approach for learning to read music for the absolute novice. I used the approach with great succcess in teaching my church choir to read music quickly. I highly recommend it!

Looks good in print, but not a lot of content........2007-07-14
I browsed through this book in a bookstore (remember those?) and went home and immediately purchased a copy from Amazon.com. Unfortunately, I didn't find the book especially helpful or informative. I sold it and went back to my Alfred's All-in-One Adult course. I think this is still the best series for the beginning piano player like myself.
Let's be honest with ourselves!.......2007-02-23
I borrowed this book from my local library on three occasions. Enough! I thought. I must have one of my own. After wasting money and time on professed "quick fix" solutions, I came to the realisation that to play the piano requires dedication and hour upon hour of practice. Nothing less will do. As a tool to help you achieve this goal and to guide you through the difficult process, nothing can surpass the program which this book offers. I haven't travelled the journey yet, but I am on my way, knowing that I will eventually get there, given ongoing patience and my own copy of this book.
Super!.......2006-12-17
Great for beginners or people needing to brush up on the basics. I had trouble with a lot of the advanced chords til I picked up this book. I was confused for a long time, but there in a few pages everything suddenly made sense! If you want to learn the fundemantals of the piano definitely get this book. It has simple, easy, to-the-point text and real pictures. The only thing is I wish they had made it spiral bound. Oh well. It's worth it.

Outstanding for a small volume on this subject.......2004-10-28
Harry and Michael are father-son music teachers in England. This book is small, 5 3/4 by 8 inches and 191 pages, but they cover every basic topic and some I didn't expect. Besides the essential basics, the book also covers vocal and part writing, jazz notation, ornamentation, phrasing, and transposition.
The explanations are understandably limited, but clear and concise. The only drawback in the book is the English terminology uses quavers (eighth notes) and mimims (half notes), etc.; instead of the American terms I'm used to.
If you would like a compact manual of music reading, this is a good one, and the hardcover is a very good value.

Good For Novice Users.......2006-08-28
This method is good for novice users. If you know anything about keyboard/piano playing this method is not for you. On the other hand, if you know nothing about keyboard/piano this is a good method. Unlike the Alfred series books which include instruction in text and musical examples on the CD (if you are lucky enough to find the CD..its not on amazon.com), Piano Presto includes the music and instruction on the CD. The book contains mostly the written music and helpful diagrams. The musical examples are very simple and some might find them boring. They are however a refreshing change from the typical ("super-boring") simple songs in other beginner methods (e.g. scarborough fair, london bridge, twinkle twinkle yada yada yada)
The two most difficult pieces in the text are "Prelude in C" and "Fur Elise". The method does a good job of teaching musical notation and sight reading but is a bit short on music theory.
When I'm done with this book I will move onto another piano method that I highly recommend for knowledgeable beginner/ intermediate piano players "The Piano Handbook".
Piano Presto is a great method..............2005-10-06
I've tried other self-taught methods but the reading would kill me. The relationship between this book and diagrams along with the cd correlates so well, making it so easy and cool. My wife already has noticed improvement. I wish learning other everyday type of things had this format.
Very helpful and informative! well worth it!.......2005-10-06
I just recently purchased Piano Presto and without any knowledge of playing the piano. The book was so easy to follow along and I can't keep away from my piano now. I am just in the beginning stages of learning how to play and the cd included with it is so helpful. I'd like to see them make additional products for learning other instruments..

This text presents easy-to-follow lesson plans for instructors who have no previous experience in teaching dance to children.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely the best for beginning dance teachers.......2006-08-01
When faced with teaching children's dance classes for the first time almost 30 years ago, I was fortunate to have this. Now conducting classes for college dance students on how to teach creative dance for children, I require this as the textbook. Very accessible; pick it up and use it immediately or use the theory and modify the ideas to create your own classes. The author organizes the medium of motion clearly and includes plans for a variety of ages in classes that enable children to create student-centered explorations of qualities of movement that are truly DANCE. Teaching Dance: The Spectrum of Styles
Wonderful.......2002-04-17
Shipped quickly!!! Wonderful condition! I would buy from seller again!

Customer Reviews:
Sad Prima, Sad.......2006-08-28
As with the City of Heros book this one was a great idea and then Prima in their great marketing skills decided to not print updates for customers. My children love the book and use it constantly, but now that a new update is out it is getting out dated. Don't buy it because you can't print the updates at a reasonable cost.
There will be *no* updates for this guide.......2006-08-22
Cryptic/NCSoft have issued the latest update as an e-guide, and have stated that they have decided against the binder update format. So it's pointless paying more for this than the usual cost of a strategy guide.
Save your money and don't bother...see why..........2006-08-08
"When major updates or new Issues are released, Prima will release new, punched Update Packs for your binder." Or so says the product description above...not going to happen.
Prima has made it clear that they will NOT be printing the updates for purchase - they will only be available for download (at no cost) from their site. Which is all fine and dandy, but to print that "free" download on your own and at your own expense in full color would be so cost prohibitive that it makes the whole binder system obsolete. (In fact, one person on the City of Heroes forums burned the file to CD and took it to their local major copy shop, who promptly quoted them a price over $200.00 to print in color.)
So, it was a great dream while it lasted...and the cries of woe from disgruntled customers have fallen on Prima's deaf ears...
Well I thought I would like it...........2006-02-28
Before ordering the guide I thought it was a great idea to be in binder format so that I could add my own stuff to it as well. Upon receiving it however I've changed my mind. Not only is the binder cheap in its construction, it is awkward to boot!
I was disappointed with the content as well... I don't think it gave me anything new of any substance; it is basically a rehash of everything that is either in the CoV manual or online in the official forums.
Quite some time ago when I bought City of Heroes (just before release), I also ordered the Prima guide for it... although a lot of the information was basic, it was hands down better than the CoV binder guide!
One of the worst guides ever........2006-01-25
I generally like guides, if just for the maps and possibly some extra color content for the game. This is without a doubt the worst one I have ever had the misfortune to purchase. They mention things in the guide that do not exist. They talk about badges and StrikeForces.. but never show any specifics. Avoid this product! You can get way better information online for free and just make your own binder.
