Book Description
In 1980, art house audience word of mouth about an unusual new movie, Return of the Secaucus Seven, launched the career of director John Sayles and with him the era of the independent filmmaker. Sayles has remained a maverick, writing, directing, editing and even acting in his own films. He has directed such diverse films as The Brother from Another Planet, Matewan, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, and Lone Star, and received two Academy Award nominations. Here is the chronicle of Sayles' career-his inauspicious beginning and his work in fiction, theatre, music videos and television. A chapter is devoted to each of his feature films: funding, plot, important characters, and a look at the language, setting, and politics. Sayles' technical development-his camera work, editing, musical arrangement and mise-en-scne-is also traced.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent...well researched and greatly informative........1999-02-10
Ryan really did his homework in pulling together the many pieces of Sayle's vision in a comprehensive, thoughtful, and provocative manner. Terrific for any student seriously wanting to explore the mind of this great artist.

Writers on Directors (Artist's Choice Book).......2006-07-12
Bill McCuddy of Fox News said:
"This is the dinner party Orson Welles, Andy Warhol, and Hal Ashby would have thrown. I'm glad Susan Gray was there to photograph it."
I have to agree: this is a stunning book!
Heidi Parker of Movieline says:.......2006-05-24
"'Writers on Directors' offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a filmmaker. Whether the entries are entertaining retellings of personal encounters with directors or simply insightful analyses of their work, you'll find yourself tossing the information around in your head days after putting the book down."
Hollywood Gray style.......2000-11-19
What a wonderful book, with amazing, original and creative photos. Great reference for students too!!
Not Wholly Satisfactory.......1999-07-07
The omissions of important directors like Kubrick (who was alive at the time) and Spielberg are too obvious since Gray went to the trouble to include pop-horror icons like Roger Corman and Wes Craven. Sure, we want an eclectic mix but come on! Another irritant is that some photos try too hard to be "artsy," so much so that we can't even see their darn faces! What's the point of including a photo then? Besides these factors, the book is one of those cheap "printed-on" hardcovers, with no dust jacket. I suppose there are interesting anecdotes to be had but so far -- a terrible first impression.
compelling and unusal insights--a must for any film buff.......1999-06-21
You really have to see this book to appreciate it. The photos and essays make unusual but apt matches. My only regret is the smallish size of the book--because of the quality of the photographs it really should have been an oversized coffee-table volume

Book Description
A riveting inside look at the lucrative world of professional high-stakes sports betting by a journalist who lived a secret life as a key operative in the world's most successful sports gambling ring.
When journalist Michael Konik landed an interview with Rick "Big Daddy" Matthews, the largest bet he'd placed on a sporting event was $200. Konik, an expert blackjack and poker player, was no stranger to Vegas. But Matthews was in a different league: the man was rumored to be the world's smartest sports bettor, the mastermind behind "the Brain Trust," a shadowy group of gamblers known for their expertise in beating the Vegas line. Konik had heard the word on the street -- that Matthews was a snake, a conniver who would do anything to gain an edge. But he was also brilliant, cunning, and charming. And when he asked Konik if he'd like to "make a little money" during the football season, the writer found himself seduced . . .
So began Michael Konik's wild ride as an operative of the elite Brain Trust. In The Smart Money, Konik takes readers behind the veil of secrecy shrouding the most successful sports betting operation in America, bypassing the myths and the rumors, going all the way to its innermost sanctum. He reveals how they -- and he -- got rich by beating the Vegas lines and, ultimately, the multimillion-dollar offshore betting circuit. He details the excesses and the betrayals, the horse-trading and the paranoia, that are the perks and perils of a lifestyle in which staking inordinate sums of money on the outcome of a single event -- sometimes as much as $1 million on a football game -- is a normal part of doing business.

take the points.......2007-10-04
an engaging look at life as part of a professional gambling syndicate. you don't get the really inside secrets of the "Brain Trust", only that they've got some kind of super computer that can beat the pointspread 57% of the time. what's really most interesting is to see the emotional wear and tear and erosion of personal life and feeling the full time gambler experiences.
A great inside look at sports betting.......2007-09-13
I enjoyed this book, although I found it to be far from the highest level of writing - way too much detail on individual bets and not nearly enough great scene descriptions. And, this is a little surprising because the author is a professional writer rather than a professional or wannabe gambler. But, if you like sports and you've always been curious about how sports gambling really works for the "smart money", this is the book for you.
Konik managed to get himself in the proverbial catbird seat to work with one of the top gambling operations in sports and then used that position to produce an enlightening book about how sports books and bookies run from "smart money" and jockey their lines to try to stay ahead of the game. He then branched out to work with an old school friend in their own "smart money" computer driven gambling venture with some Hollywood celebrities. Entertaining stuff and an easy read. Give it a look if you have any interest in the topic whatsoever.
A quick read...the highest compliment you can give........2007-08-25
Wow, this book makes the reader step back and go whoa!! What am I doing with my mundane life whittling away playing corporate suit when I can go to Vegas and make real money, see the surreal sights, and eat free meals? This may sound great, but after reading Konik's roller coaster ride of rising stakes, one gets the feeling that maybe this all-consuming pursuit of easy money takes its toll on the pursuer. Loss of mind (at least momentarily while watching games), and significant other is enough to make any man pause. I found that the relationship between Konik and his woman is the most interesting part of the book and I would concentrate on that if I were to adapt this book into a screenplay. Money comes and goes, all too easy, yet a loved one is a precious part of life that can be lost also. But unlike money, sometimes love can never be gained back, no matter the spread. I felt Konik's pain. I felt Konik's joy. I felt the book. What more can a reader ask of an author?
Get a piece of the action!.......2007-08-07
Fantastic!
An exciting tale of the transformation of a humble author into a major "player" in the alien world of multi-million dollar sports betting. As the author's situations became more surreal and as the money grew to eye-popping amounts, I felt my pulse quicken and palms begin to sweat. I don't know how Michael Konik did it! Just READING about the pressure, money & fear made me dizzy & nauseous (in a good way)!
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in gambling, sports, probability or (let's face it) money! ;-)
This Book is AWESOME!!!.......2007-07-28
Great Book, I coulnd't put it down. Great job Mr. Konik...even with the knowledge you give about betting, I can't wait till football season!!!!

Wonderful gambling history.......2004-06-27
Truly a must read for anyone interested in gambling. This well produced book features over 250 pages of text on the history, methods, and techniques of gamblers and bookmakers and offers great insight into the psychological aspects of gambling (which can be useful for any gambler and is also just very fascinating as a general history of this "pastime").

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
Noted chess author annotates great contests beginning with 16th-century master Ruy Lopez. Concise, illustrated analysis of games by Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer, Karpov, many more. Much chess expertise plus revealing anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories of celebrated combatants. Illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
I Love This Book!.......2007-05-23
Seriously, I think this is one of those instant classics that all chess players should own!
This book is not your typical chess game collection. First of all the chapters are broken down into ages, for example chapter 1 is listed as "From Philidor to Morphy" and on to others such as "The Age of Lasker" and "The Age of Fisher", etc, etc. So this book covers quite a large area of chess history with a mini biography of each master which in my opinion is worth the price of this book.
The games are quite good, as you would guess and the annotations of the games are mostly short and in plain english, making it much more enjoyable to those less then masters.
The only negative thing that I could say is that the games are in descriptive format making it a little harder to play out the games but if your serious about chess this certainly won't stop you as it hasn't me. Hopefully this book will get updated at some point and fix this minor weakness of an otherwise great book.
The book is standard in size to most chess books and the font size is easy to read, the diagrams are a little hard on the eyes but just require that you study the diagrams a little more.
So there you have it. This book should be on your bookshelf or better yet next to your chess set and relive some of the best matches in chess history.
An Ok book.......2006-03-15
This is an ok book. The annotation is pretty good, though in some places it is a bit sparse. The main thing I don't like about it is that it is written in the old, descriptive notation and not updated to algebraic notation. Also, The diagrams are small and the moves crammed onto pages. This is a 3.5 book rounded up to 4. I'm not sure if you should buy this book.

Book Description
You could think of Setting Up LAMP as four books in one, but it's actually something much more valuable: a single volume that presents the open-source technologies known collectively as LAMP—Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP—as tightly dovetailed components of today's most affordable and effective platform for building dynamic web-based applications.
Each technology has uses outside of this context, of course, but within it they form something greater than the sum of their parts. This book shows you how to take full advantage of this power, walking you through all the steps required to lay your Linux foundation, install and configure your Apache web server, and then begin using PHP to access content stored in MySQL. Here are a few of the specific topics you'll find covered inside:
- Installing and configuring qmail with support for IMAP, POP3, SMTP, virtual domains, spam filtering, and antivirus
- Managing system users and groups
- Configuring your network
- Creating a custom firewall script using IP tables
- Recognizing when a system is in distress
- Handling MySQL database replication
- Configuring virtual domains
- Writing a basic PHP script that integrates with MySQL
If you're new to all of this, you'll quickly get to where you need to be to start developing and deploying the higher-level pieces of your web application. Even if you have experience with one or all of these technologies, this book—including its quick-start installation appendix—is a resource you'll want close by whenever you're setting up or fine-tuning your LAMP system.
Customer Reviews:
Good information but outdated.......2007-07-12
This book was probably great a couple of years ago. It has great step-by-step instructions, and it walks you through things in a very detailed manner.
However, since the versions of all software (and the OS) used in the book have been updated at least a few times since 2004, I ran into several issues. Maybe 10% of all the links are accurate (which you need to install the .rpm files in the way the book tells you to), and when you do find the updated versions of everything, some of the commands the book gives you produce errors. Since the instructions probably worked correctly in 2004, there is no information on what those errors mean or how to fix them.
In short, I'm setting this book aside to find something more recent, and reloading the system I was using to test this with. If you do not have prior experience and a good understanding of how all of these programs work and how to troubleshoot their errors, I would recommend finding a more up-to-date book.
Not what was expected........2007-01-09
I am very unsatisfied with this book. It only gives instructions on how to setup a lamp using one distro only. And it was geared only to well experienced users. The book was incomprehensible to me.
Not a beginner book.......2006-08-25
This book is listed as a beginner to intermediate book, but I would rate it as intermediate at the very least. The author has a fetish for unnecessarily elaborate terminology that overcomplicates straightforward operational activities (to exemplify my point). Otherwise, it is a good overview of the four technologies and how they work together to provide a seamless web presence.
A great resource on this subject.......2006-03-05
One of the things I liked about this book was the amount of detail it had on its subjects, and yet it is not a 1000 page novel. If you just want to have a system running a web server and you don't really care about how it works and what is going on, then this is definitely not the book for you. However, if you really want to learn how these components work together and exactly what is going on, then I do recommend this book. After taking a Linux course, I picked this up and still learned quite a bit from the introduction to Linux chapter. Everything is very clearly written and easy to understand. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the pages are devoted to listing configuration files, but you can easily just skip over these if they don't apply to you.

If you are looking for a book that provides a brief overview, you will be satisfied with Eric Rosebrock's book. If you are looking for a "how to" reference book that covers MySQL and PHP in depth, you will probably be disappointed. The book merely provides basic information as the title states: "Setting Up LAMP: Getting Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP Working Together" that being LAMP installation and configuration procedures on a FEDORA Linux environment. This book offers the necessary information to install FEDORA Linux, and getting your Apache web server operating with MySQL and PHP. Rosebrock's book does save you the time and effort of having to glean information from those various "open source computer geeks" (right brain) web sites.
