INXS consists of Andrew, Tim, and Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, and Garry Beers. The band's sixth member, Michael Hutchence, died in 1997. I looked for this book everywhere and no one had it. I'm so glad I was able to find it here. Really, I wish I had it a lot sooner.

A decent bio.......2007-09-03

This is a decent bio of the band. It is not a great book and my main ciriticism is that the text often drags and rambles its way thru the book. The editor shoold have structured this a little bit better ad a smoother read.
Photos shouls have been more conclusive as well.

Bitter (sweet) Tears.......2006-12-14

INXS was one of the best bands to come out of the 80's! I thought I knew a lot about the band from reading Smash Hits as a teenager, but boy was I wrong!

I enjoyed hearing the stories from the bands' point of view and I especially liked the insight into the early years. Although I was surprised at how little was actually mentioned about the years surrounding Listen like Thieves and Kick. Anthony Bozza's writing style covers the excesses of the post-Kick years in detail, but without the cheapening feel of tabloid fodder.

The lack of "tell-all" sensationalism may leave some feeling that the book was boring. While the book does feel slow at times, it's a truly great story. A bittersweet tale of brothers and friends who worked hard to reach amazing heights only to have it all come crashing down around them.

In the late 80's & early 90's the media portrayed Michael Hutchence as the most important member of INXS. After reading this book, I really understood how much all of the members contributed. This book also helps to make a little more sense out of the Rock Star TV show (sort of).

So, you think that you knew INXS. Maybe what you knew was what you read or saw on TV. Well, here's your opportunity to know the truth as this is the only biography of the band that is sanctioned and participated in by the band. INXS is a band of brothers, three blood brothers, Farriss, and three soul-brothers, Beers, Pengilly, and Hutchence. This is a book that allows the reader an opportunity to see a glimpse of their rise to fame, their perserverence in an often difficult music world, and the tragic events that led to Hutchence's departure from this world.

The reader is allowed to glance at the remaining band members' sorrow and their soul searching that Hutchence's death brought about. It is also the story of a journey, of the path that led the remaining members of the INXS family to seek a new member of the band, not to replace Hutchence, but to continue the musical journey that was begun by all six members of the band. This is a band whose light was dimmed by the loss of Hutchence, but whose light was never completely doused. This is a band who, like the family that they are, needed private moments to reflect, needed to wrap their minds around the events that led to their brother's death, and needed to have an outlet to express themselves. Music has always been INXS' outlet and has always allowed them the opportunity to work out their problems, insecurities, and dreams. And the music had ended without an encore in November of 1997.

Any true fan of INXS should read this book. Please read the book with an open mind. Even those fans who believe that replacing Hutchence through the reality TV series Rock Star INXS was tastless and commercial should read this book. Listen to what the remaining band members say. Listen to how they describe themselves and listen to how they describe Hutchence. It is plain to see that these are men who have done an incredible amount of soul searching, who have blamed themselves for not being able to stop their brother's downward spiral, who have replayed those final hours in their minds so many times that they became raw from the experience. This book is about the hope that they each have been able to take from their self-reflection and about the vision that they each believe INXS has yet to complete. Finally, ask yourself as you read this book, if I died would I want my family to break apart and not be the same family ever again, or would I want my family to try to continue as a family? I, personally, would want my family to try to move on without me. I would never want my family to disentigrate because of my death.

Finally, this book is about healing. The band's healing from the death of Hutchence and about the fan's healing through an understanding of the true personalities of the remaining members of INXS. As a true INXS fan from the early moments of their careers, I am happy that they participated in this book and I am happy that, once again, the bright beacon of INXS music is being heard throughout the world. And I am pleased that INXS went about the task of finding a lead singer in such a fan-friendly way as to allow the fans the opportunity to participate in their three month live audition to find a new lead singer. I am also thrilled that, like me, JD Fortune, Jason, to the other members of INXS, is a huge INXS fan. He, like other INXS fans, is aware of and in awe of Hutchence and will always keep Hutchence's light shining. To INXS, I say, good on ya, mates!

I bought this book because I read Sabine Auken's "I Love This Game" which is dynamite. She uses the Mini No Trump (10-12). I wanted to learn more about it and the title of this book made me think it would be useful.

Unfortunately, this book is Eric Lufs personal Bidding system.
Most of the book is on all aspects of his system, Bergen Raises, "Funny Raises", etc. He does have some material on the weak NT, but not much. Not how to use it effectively, with examples. I feel I was midlead by the title. A better title would be "This is my own bidding system, I use a lot of Martry Bergens stuff, oh, by the way, I use the weak No Trump"

What are Eric Lufs credentials that I would be interested in his personal system? He describes himself as an Intermediate level player. He's never won a Regional, let alone a National Tournament. Why would I be interested in his take on Bergen Raises or in his system when I can read Marty Bergens "Better Bidding With Bergen". At least Marty Bergen has won 10 national titles and has the experience and expertise to suggest useful conventions.

If you don't like Bergen, there are books by Max Hardy, Mike Lawrence, and Marshal Miles. These guys have serious experience and played in top flight competition.

I got little out of the book. I will try the other one "Weak No Trump" by Andy Stark.

Maybe Eric is a great guy in person but he's not someone I'd care to play with.

worth it, a very good read..........2006-12-03

This is not a book for bridge snobs. Luft does not pretend to be a great player. But he is a pretty good bidding theorist. He's an average player and his audience is other average players who hope to get better. His general suggestions about aggressive bidding are in tune with Marty Bergen, Larry Cohen, etc.

Luft has a light, friendly, conversational style. Some of his claims are hard to swallow, but he knows that, and is frank about it. Some of his stories are hilarious. His tips for wannabe experts are worth taking seriously, whether you play weak NT or not.

This is a very entertaining book. You don't have to believe what Luft says about bridge to enjoy it.

I especially like the book's emphasis on trusting and respecting your partner. Luft comes out very strongly against masterminding auctions. I think he would be a fun guy to play with.

Try the Andy Stark Book on the Weak No Trump.......2006-11-27

I first read Andy Starks Weak No Trump and wanted more. That book is a good introduction, but half the book is devoted to NT responses / runouts / defense. I wanted a book on "How a weak NT will affect your contructive bidding".
For example with a 12-14 NT, your 1 Club and 1 Diamond opening bids tend to be stronger, no longer those 12 HCP 4432 balanced hands. They may have 15-17 HCP and/or a longer minor suit. How does that affect your constuctive bidding? How does it affect the opponents overcalls?

This book devoted very little to that, and overall it offered me little of what I was looking for.

It was mainly about the authors personal set of favorite conventions, which don't interest me at all. [Note: the author describes himself as an Intermediate and a Life master]. I wanted a book mainly on the weak NT, not a homegrown system. There are plenty of other books (like Washington Standard) for that.

- It includes various responses to NT and run outs (just like the stark book). I prefered the coverage of Starks book.

I disagree with the authors tone and hand evaluation. He lectures on the benefits of the Rule of 20, but then doesn't apply judgment.
- his definition of a weak 2 is having any 5 card suit. That great if you can play like Marty Bergen, or have Larry Cohen as your partner. Or if your opponents are not made aware of this and are taken by surprise in a set of short contests, like 2-3 hands in Duplicate.

- He says he would never play with someone who wont open the hand below 1 Spade or 2 Spades:

S: J x x x x
H: x
D: Q x x x x
C: A K

While that meets the rule of 20, the 2 long suits are dreadful.
Switch the hands to:

S: A K x x x
H: x
D: Q J x x x
C: x x
And I too would open that 1 Spade.
There is more to hand evaluation than just counting HCP or initial losers. The texture of the long suits is critical.

- I disagree with the author about the value of some conventions.

- I didn't like the authors attitude, I would never want to play with someone like that. A partnership doesn't require clones, it requires agreements and understanding.

The book didn't meet my expectations and I returned it.

Great reference, but not inspiring at all!.......2006-08-11

I bought this book with another book in mind, Alias' book on their program Maya. That book is a project-based heap of tutorials on their software. And since this book is also written by the people behind the program, i thought it would be as inspiring, but i was proven wrong. Don't be put off by this though; if you want a thick book for reference of all the basic functions, go for it. If on the other hand you're easily put off by excessive technical details and just want to get your hands dirty ASAP (like me) you should consider another book. Regarding the lack of inspiration, i would like to inform you about the structure of things. The book doesn't really have you model a lot on your own, but rather refers to tutorial files on the cd and use them to explain basic functions. I can't say it too many times, the whole book should be based around an interesting project where each chapter introduces you to the basic functions while you actually feel like you're doing something useful, e.g. making a part of the project. A plus to the book though is that you are free to read/do the modules in any order you'd like, and the book is made for the ease of doing so.
