    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ.......2006-04-29

THIS IS A BUNCH OF SHORT STORIES AND INSIGHTS FROM MORE THAN 60 PLAYERS FROM THE 1940'S THRU THE 1960'S. SOME PLAYERS INCLUDE RALPH KINER, FRANK MALZONE, BOB SHAW AND BOBBY THOMSON. EACH PLAYER IS GIVEN 3-4 PAGES OF INTERSTING AND ENTERTAINING STORIES. THIS AN EASY BOOK TO READ BUT VERY VERY ENJOYABLE. WE MORE AND MORE TALES FROM BASEBALL'S GOLDEN ERA. A MUST READ FOR NOSTALGIC FANS.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting stories.......2001-01-25

In this book, forty or fifty ball players are described and then each of them talk about players they have played against. Several umpires also tell of different events in some of their ballgames. It's very interesting to read of their thoughts about some of the better ball players.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading!.......2000-08-08

Between 1940 and 1959 players like Musial, Aaron, Mantle, Mays, Spahn and Banks were just a few of the men to play baseball during what baseball purest call the "Golden Age of Baseball". Gene Fehler has put together a collection of 56 players from the era and the stories they tell bring to life the true world of baseball.

262 pages may seem short and believe me there could have so much more, but what the author does within those pages is pure magic. Reading about what is was like to play along side the greats to winning World Series to having Joe DiMaggio spike you are but a few of the tales in this book.

Baseball comes to life and the players live again as Fehler has collected stories about what is was like to face Musial and Williams, how to avoid Mantle's bat and so many other great ones. As a true baseball fan, I found this book both entertaining and a delight to read and read again.

If you looking for a baseball book that gives the dirt on players this book is certainly not the one, but if you are looking for several hours of fun and enlightening then you can stop at your nearest book store and get yourself a copy.

Fun under $20.00 Sports Publishing has given you a real winner - enjoy the reading!

    Book Description

To a generation of fans, Willie Mays was the greatest ballplayer they had ever seen. The prowess and speed of the Say Hey Kid were unmatched on the diamond before his time, prompting Joe DiMaggio to label him, “the closest you can come to perfection.” He was the first player to hit fifty home runs and steal twenty bases in a single season. Mays played for the New York Giants (1951–1957), San Francisco Giants (1958–1972), and New York Mets (1972–1973), and in his glory days with the Giants he not only set the major league mark for consecutive seasons by appearing in 150 games or more but by winning his two MVP awards a record twelve seasons apart. When Mays retired, he ranked third in career home runs (behind Aaron and Ruth), a record of 660 soon to be surpassed by Mays’s godson, Barry Bonds.

This twenty-fifth anniversary edition of the only ballplayer biography ever named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Willie’s Time: Baseball’s Golden Age, restores to print Charles Einstein’s vivid biography of one of the game’s foremost legends. With a new preface from the author, this volume replays the most dramatic moments of the Say Hey Kid’s career—from the 1951 Miracle Giants to the Amazing Mets of 1973—and takes us inside the lives of Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron, Durocher, and others along the way. Einstein offers a compelling and complete look at Mays: as a youth in racist Birmingham, a triumphant symbol of African American success, a sports hero lionized by fans, and yet all the while, still a very human figure destined to play for two decades amid baseball’s Golden Age.

    5 out of 5 stars History lesson.......2006-11-03

This book is a great history lesson not just of baseball but of the times Willie played. There are many memories of the "Giants" of yesterday.

5 out of 5 stars a magical book about a truly great baseball player.......2005-04-27

"Willie's Time," by Charles Einstein, is a magical read, in my opinion. Einstein basically starts when Willie made it to the "Bigs," and he weaves history into the phenomenal career of Willie Mays, who is arguably the greatest baseball player that ever lived.

I started playing Little League baseball in 1960, and I played center. Willie Mays was my hero. Mays could-and did-do it all: (1)hit for average, (2)hit with power, (3)run the bases, (4)play defense, and (5)win games for his team with intangibles. Many players challenged Willie's arm, and Mays threw the majority of them out.

To attempt to compare drug-enhanced players of today with Willie Mays is ludicrous. They are mere children compared to Willie.

Today (27 May 2005), Major League Baseball no longer exists (to me). But "Willie's Time" was a wonderful reminder of not only a great baseball player, but also a time when Major League Baseball was fun. (RIP, Major League Baseball.)

In my opinion, you will NOT be disappointed if you buy this book.

He was called "The Baseball Photographer," the man who put his camera away after the World Series and didn't unpack it again until Opening Day, but Conlon's work is not that simple. Though he had no artistic pretense, his images are certainly works of art, and if his subject, on the surface, was the "National Pastime," his focus was really on capturing depth of character; his characters just happened to be ballplayers. Conlon's stark, vivid, black-and-white photographs caught an era that spanned the turn of the century to the second World War, and some of the moments he froze remain breathtakingly stunning: the sad eyes of Babe Ruth in deep close-up, the hope in the smile of a rookie Lou Gehrig, the dignity of Walter Johnson, the impishness of Casey Stengel, the burdens of Honus Wagner, the arrogance of Nap Lajoie and Tris Speaker, and the concentration of Christy Mathewson. This is a magnificent collection, one capable of superimposing the past onto the present; it is visually arresting--and alluring--like the game itself. --Jeff Silverman

    Book Description

"This is an invaluable volume for baseball fans and American history buffs alike."--Sports Illustrated

Ty Cobb slides into third in a flurry of dust and spikes. Home Run Baker, young and strong, takes batting practice while his teammates stand in awe. Wee Willie Keller and Cy Young, Babe Ruth and Dizzy Dean, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams--these and other American heroes take the field in Baseball's Golden Age: The Photographs of Charles M. Conlon. From 1904 to 1942, Conlon photographed it all, creating some of baseball's most famous photographs, but the photographer himself has remained practically unknown. This volume is the first publication to reproduce Conlon's photographs as fine art and to give his remarkable legacy its due.

Selected and newly printed from the Conlon negatives in the archives of The Sporting Age, 205 dazzling images fill the pages of Baseball's Golden Age. The glory of that time shines through in the text as well, as authors Neal McCabe and Constance McCabe have assembled wonderful, evocative stories that bring these legendary baseball heroes to life. Baseball's Golden Age is sure to please all fans of baseball--past, present, and future.

As great as the photos are the text is almost as good.

Very refreshing; especially in the winter and in light of $250 million player contracts.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the coffee table.......1999-05-18

This is a fantastic book for anyone historically inclined. It focuses on an era- in the context of baseball. The descriptions with each amazing photo show how America viewed baseball as a microcosm of the country. A great discussion book. Highly recommended. An added bonus is the classic, unretouched photo of Ty Cobb sliding into third, knocking the third baseman off his feet.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE IS THE SEQUEL??!!!.......1999-04-11

This marvellous collection of the greatest baseball photographs ever taken qualify as one of the very best contributions to both baseball literature and serious photography. The consummate images of rough-hewn blue-collar stock named Wagner or McGraw or Overall silhouetted against rickety hardwood bleachers, rusty wire screens, and smoke-baptised brick houses; unmown grass and pock-marked infields beneath them; the smell of pancake mitts and hickory bats and unwashen wool uniforms in their nostrils; coal-dust and farm soil and blistering summer sun etching character into their faces. These, I say, seem to me the very breath and blood of the grand ol' game of baseball, all gloriously frozen in time in its purest splendor by the sensitive eye of Charles M. Conlon. These indelible images from the tool of a genius ARE NOT JUST BASEBALL PHOTOGRAPHS! Who can shake the documentary immediacy, mental peace, or aesthetic excitement aroused by the breath-taking images of Bob Rhoads warming-up his soupbone, shadowed by the hand-operated scoreboard at the wood-and-spit Hilltop Park? Or a flailing Tommy Leach squinting a pop-up into the merciless Brooklyn sun? Or Ty Cobb, his jaw curled into a fist, ruthlessly showering dirt and hellfire into a helpless third-sacker? Or muscular Tim Jordan gracefully balancing a heavy-weight stroke of his massive war-club? As the authors state, Conlon deserves to be ranked with Ansel Adams and Walker Evans, and compared with Eugene Atget. His undying images provide a unique look at a time and way of life gone by. P.S.: What I want to know is, WHERE IS THE SEQUEL? Conlon left 8000 negatives; and many of his most extraordinary--such as Russ Ford warming up by the Hilltop's trumpet-clutching "p.a. announcer"; or Hank Gowdy burnishing in the sunlight, warming-up on a Polo Grounds sideline in 1917--have been reproduced in a baseball card set, the discontinued "Conlon Collection," issued by the Sporting News. But the reproduction of these wonderful photographs in the set are inferior to Constance McCabe's sensitive care; and are much smaller, besides. Neal, if you're reading this, PLEASE put together another volume of Conlon's brilliant images!

5 out of 5 stars Historically important snapshot of baseball.......1999-03-17

Were Charles Conlon still alive, I would track him down and kiss his feet for capturing in such vivid detail the historic giants of baseball. The book features remarkable photos of the greatest baseball players of most of the first half of this century. Suitable for framing, the photos typically depict individual players and small groups, often in game action. The well preserved photographs provide an important window on a truly beautiful game and its players in an era when outfield fences were optional, and a "baseball club" was just that. My favorite of Conlon's gems shows Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner gripping his bat. Under his fingernails is Pennsylvania coal dust. His chipped, oversized piece of lumber looks unwieldy by today's standards. And his sinuous forearms are testament to the power that we remember him by. Other photos are paired to show the dramatic impact of age and the outfield sun on players of yesterday. Picture Wes Chandler spunky at 25 and then battle weary at about 50 and you'll understand why so many players strive so hard for a moment in the sun: they want to enjoy it before it's all gone.

5 out of 5 stars If you like baseball history, you will love this book........1999-02-21

I have been a reader of baseball history for most of my 45 years, and I never heard of George S. Conlon. I know him now. This book is nothing less than fascinating. The photos are marvelous, but every printed word is interesting, starting with the preface. I could not put it down.

5 out of 5 stars The Lawrence Ritter of Tiger literature.......1999-07-30

If Richard Bak was to write 10 books about the Detroit Tigers, I'm sure my top 10 favorite books on the team would be those books (with my appologies to Ernie Harwell). Unlike any other Detroit Tiger author, Bak puts you at the feet of the greats he talks about or interviews and makes you feel like you are at Tiger Stadium during the 1930s. He has just the right blend of personality and historical fact to each book he publishes. In Cobb Would've Caught It, Bak talks to several Tiger greats and not-so Tiger greats and puts you in the seat next to him while he interviews them. I almost catch myself wanting to ask questions to the players as each story continues on. When Bak writes a book about Detroit basball, I immediately buy it - and I am never upset. David Troppens

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the true "baseball fan"!.......1999-01-16

Mr. Bak outdoes himself on this spellbinding autobiography of 22 "greats" of Baseball Legends. Few writers can make the pictures and words come to life. Bak should be commended, as he does quite well at this. He not only gives the reader a sense of time and place, but prefaces players' interviews with a short history as well, and the paths the city and professional baseball took from the end of WWI through the early 50's. Beautiful and yet haunting pictures of the way baseball was. An extra bonus was the almost-forgotten Black professional teams as well. Good reading, and one you'll go back to read and reference time after time after time.

      Book Description

WITHOUT HIS LUCKY glove, Jamie doesn't believe in his ability to lead his baseball team to victory until he learns that faith in oneself is the most important equipment for any game. Jamie lovingly oiled his glove all winter and, as the season approaches, he--and his glove--are in top form. When he carelessly loses his glove, he also loses his faith in himself and it shows in his playing. After an unsuccessful search for the glove and a stern reprimand from his father, a borrowed glove is found for the season's opening game. Disappointed in his performance with the borrowed glove, Jamie seeks help at a local sporting goods shop and finds it in the generosity of the store's owner--a former minor league player. The old-timer uses the history of baseball gloves and a few fielding tips (like practice!) to demonstrate that no tool--even a lucky glove--is a substitute for confidence and determination.

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Glove.......2007-07-17

The Golden Glove is about a kid who has a glove that is really good and he thinks it is sort of magical. But then he loses the glove and and has to borrow a different glove that doesn't work as well but then he finds out what they used for gloves in the old days and every glove is the same. Then at the very end he finds his own glove.
I recommend this book for anyone who likes baseball. This book has good characters, and strong plot and it's funny.

I had first read this book during the early 70's when I was Still in my teens, because nostilgia has a way of destorting things this book was not quite as great as I remembered it to be. Nevertheless it is still great a book, for those of us who understand that in History while Wars,Summit Meetings and the like have (and should ) thier place, so should the more ordinary aspects, of our cultural life. The portions of this book that deal with Ty Cobb's insanity and racism Hal Chase's corruption, "Judge Landis's" overated qualties, and the fact that the 1919 World Series scandal was merely a means to an end, rather than the actual cause of the overthrow of The National Commission, for me anyway make for great reading, I would urge anyone intrested in American culture, or just loves baseball/nostilgia to purchase this book here.

I thoroughly enjoyed your book. I have given it as a gift and recommend it highly. One person I gave it to grew up a Brooklyn Dodger fan and he really loved the section about "Leo the lip" Durocher.

If you want to learn about the fading days of Gehrig and the ascendancy of the splendid splinter, you will find it here. The personalities of the various featured players shine through in Talmadge's prose. Easy to read, enjoyable, and inexpensive when bought used, this makes for great summer reading!

          1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2000-03-11

I have read this book on the internate. There are alot of mistakes. First of all, in one page it told about brownouts(like microwave beam torhing other buildings). I have never seen this happen. It also said that rioters ae suppose to set fires, I have never seen this happen. The prices to all these buildings are wrong. The cost for a Coal Plant is 4,500 doolars is suppose to be 5,000 dollars. It says that when there is a nuclearmelt down, fires are set. This is true in SimCity 2000 but not in SC3K. And there many other mistakes. Throw this book out.

          1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Money.......1999-12-29

This book is a very poor guide to SimCity 3000. Many of thereferences are for events and screens that occur in the SimCity 2000edition and which are not duplicated in the 3000 game. For example, the book refers many times to specific increases in the dollar value of tiles, even though the 3000 game does not identify specific dollar values, only ranges such as "very high" or "astronomical". The book even refers to the bus station as a four tile building (which it was in the 2000 game), not a one tile building as it is in the 3000.

The final insult is an entire chapter dealing with 2000 scenarios which are not included in the 3000 edition.

Overall, this is a poorly edited older guide book with little work done to properly update the information for the new edition.

          1 out of 5 stars A- palling.......1999-11-08

Todd, you are so onto it. This book is an utter waste of cash. Even the new info is highly doubtful. Best to ignore tham completely methinks... And if you've bought it- get a refund!

1 out of 5 stars Full of errors.......1999-03-18

Currently, this book is full of spurious information that is simply false. Much information has been ported over from the previous version that is simply not applicable for this game. Very little research went into this guide. Choose the Prima guide over this trash.

1 out of 5 stars SC2K book with SC3K pasted in. Many errors. Not worth a dime.......1999-02-26

          Where to begin....

This book is so poorly done. It is inexcusable. The writers obviously took the SC2K book and lightly modified it to be the SC3K book. And they left things in from SC2K that no longer apply, or are different in SC3K. For Example:

On page 9, they say we should work without disasters for now. "From the menu bar, pull down Disasters and select No Disasters." Well, since the book doesn't include any pictures describing terminology, we are left to assume the menu bar is the list of icons on the right. However, when you scroll over the icons and look at the cue cards, none of them are labeled "Disasters". The closest is "Emergency" and it doesn't have a "No Disasters" option. The directions they give work in SC2K. In SC3k, you have to go to the "Change Settings and Exit" icon and then choose "Preferences" and uncheck "Disasters".

In numerous places, the book says that sims will not want to walk more than 3 tiles (Example, Page 15 in the Tip Box.) While that certainly is true in SC2K, in SC3K, the depth depends on the type of zone. Residential can be 4 tiles, Commercial 3, and industrial 5. This can make a huge difference in strategy requiring fewer roads and less cost!

On page 43, the book states that Hydroelectric Power has been removed from SC3K. Then on page 47, in the advantage to oil section, it states that they do not have to be placed on waterfall tiles. (?) Since hydro power is gone, what do waterfalls have to do with power?

On page 16, the book states that you have to place one power line spanning a road. Again, this was true in SC2K, but not in SC3K. The manual that comes with SC3K, on page 96 states: "Any building or zone placed within two tiles of an already powered building or zone automatically gets power. Connections over roads are not necessary." "You only need to lay power lines if you wish to transmit power beyond five tiles." On page 53, the book again states, incorrectly, that "Power does not cross roads, railways, or highways."

The book states that pumps provide more water if they are placed with more sides exposed to a water source. In SC2K, this was certainly true. However, the section titled "Notes to Simcity 2000 Players" (Which the authors of this book must not have read), says that "Water pumps must be placed within one tile of fresh water to have full pumping capacity, within two tiles to have any pumping capacity."

The book also states that if you turn disasters off and have enough money, the game will automatically replace your power plant when it dies of old age. Again this was true in SC2K, but not in SC3K.

These are just the issues I found in the first 50 or so pages of you book. I already own the SC2K strategy book. If I wanted to read that book again, I could have done so for free. It is inexcusable that they would release a book with so many glaring errors.

When I sent E-Mail to the publisher requesting that they fix the problems with this book, they said they would only fix the errors if the book sold enough copies to warrant a second printing. How many people are going to buy this book expecting to have a strategy guide to help them play SimCity, only to find that the information contained in the book is useless?

Sybex should pull this book and fix it now.

5 out of 5 stars not quick, but really helpful.......2003-12-02

As a new Tablet PC user, I heartily recommend this book. Using a new technology effectively isn't usually "quick" for most of us, and we waste valuable time learning by trial and error. For the time and frustration it's saved me, this book has been well worth its cost. The explanations and illustrations are clear, material is introduced in the proper order, and it's easy to find what what you're looking for when you go back to refresh your memory about a procedure.

3 out of 5 stars Quick Reference is not so quick.......2003-02-05

The book is thorough in its coverage of the main Tablet PC applications. But that's not what I thought a Quick Reference should be. At 264 pages, this book is a bit long-winded.

Great section on how the handwriting recognition works though.

Being the first Tablet PC book to hit the market, it does the platform justice.
