            5 out of 5 stars DAW's Best-kept secret.......2003-06-21

Steven Krane is DAW's best kept secret -- or maybe its secret weapon. The two books so far from this guy Krane remind me of the Stephen King's early mature novels.

The story is scary and compelling enough just in outline -- a disease that causes adolescent boys to suddenly burst into flame. But what Krane does with it is pure genius -- he gets into the mind of one of the boys, a heart-breakingly vulnerable and artistic orphan (guess why he's an orphan) and makes us live the tragic career of a talented man-child doomed to function as tool of an intelligence so alien that its cruelty and iron obdurancy make you want to shout out in defense of the protagonist.

If that isn't enough, the other point of view character is a man seeking to solve the riddle of these boys who spontaneously combust. And his story also involves betrayal, anguish, and ultimately compassion for the victims.

STRANGER INSIDE echoes CARRIE, yes, but it comes to the table with a deeper appreciation of what it is to be an alienated teen -- in this case a teen with a secret more devastating than an unsympathetic and anhedonic mother -- than we ever could have had when we read that earlier masterpiece. Krane, and we, have lived through the tragedy of Columbine, and if we're attuned to the complex message of that catastrophe, this book is going to make us think more deeply than ever before about the nature of innocence and victimization.

Krane gets to the heart of what it is to be young and a victim. He treats issues of privacy and first amendment rights, as well as the ineffective and cruel way adolescents are treated in our society when they fall afoul of the law, whether as a result of their own ill deeds or innocently.

You'll read this book fast -- the pages turn quickly. But you'll remember its protagonists and its message long after you've put it down.

Krane is going to be DAW's superstar of the first decade of this century -- discover him early.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling till the end!.......2003-03-12

The end of this book was so mind boggling that I wrestled with it in my mind for hours afterwards in a post-sixth sense kind of way. A writer that leaves that kind of impression deserves a lot of respect.
Having said that, and since HK has already provided the summary (she's already reviewed every book I'm reading and thousands more, where does she get the time?) I'll just say, I would have preferred a little more closure. I'd love a sequel!! Jimmy, the 'Golden' as the govt agents call him, is a lost and confused teenager, and keeps the reader's attention because the most interesting things start happening to him. As a fan of comics, I enjoyed the way the comic book scenes were described, even though they were a bit creepy.
And yes, you WILL read it in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars exciting science fiction.......2003-02-04

Spontaneous combustion is happening to teens all over America, burning from the inside out. The government has a special black ops unit called Cold Blue that is studying the problem but they have no idea how to stop it from happening. All the government knows is that teens combust on or around their fifteenth birthday.

Jimmy Somerset is a seventeen-year-old who has been in and out of foster homes all his life. His latest home is good for him and he has a job he loves. However, high school bullies won't leave him alone. One day they go too far and Jimmy causes permanent physical damage on his tormentor. He is given the option of going into the government-sponsored program TRACE or Juvenile hall. He picks TRACE not knowing he will be placed in a unit mentored by Code Blue who thinks he is the key to getting the answers to dead teens.

This is one novel where the government does not behave like an impersonal robot but as a group of caring individuals that deal with a complex problem of epic and international proportions. The children in TRACE are cared for and getting the treatment they need even if they don't know what is really going on around them. STRANGER INSIDE is a science fiction novel that keeps readers guessing until the very last paragraph.

                      Book Description

Over the last four decades, the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu produced one of the most imaginative and subtle bodies of social theory of the postwar era. When he died two years ago, he was considered to be a thinker on a par with Foucault, Barthes, and Lacan—a public intellectual as influential to his generation as Sartre was to his.

Science of Science and Reflexivity will be welcomed as a companion volume to Bourdieu's now seminal An Invitation to Reflexive Sociology. In this posthumous work, Bourdieu declares that science is in danger of becoming a handmaiden to biotechnology, medicine, genetic engineering, and military research—that it risks falling under the control of industrial corporations that seek to exploit it for monopolies and profit.

Science thus endangered can become detrimental to mankind. The line between pure and applied science, therefore, must be subjected to intense theoretical scrutiny. Bourdieu's goals in Science of Science and Reflexivity are to identify the social conditions in which science develops in order to reclaim its objectivity and to rescue it from relativism and the forces that might exploit it. In the grand tradition of scientific reflections on science, Bourdieu provides a sociological analysis of the discipline as something capable of producing transhistorical truths; he presents an incisive critique of the main currents in the study of science throughout the past half century; and he offers a spirited defense of science against encroaching political and economic forces.

A masterful summation of the principles underlying Bourdieu's oeuvre and a memoir of his own scientific journey, Science of Science and Reflexivity is a capstone to one of the most important and prodigious careers in the field of sociology.

                          Book Description

This book represents an innovative experiment in presenting the results of a large-scale, multidisciplinary archaeological project. The well-known authors and their team examined the Neolithic and Bronze Age landscapes on Bodmin Moor of Southwest England, especially the site of Leskernick. The result is a multivocal, multidisciplinary telling of the stories of Bodmin Moor—both ancient and modern—using a large number of literary genres and academic disciplines. Dialogue, storytelling, poetry, photo essays and museum exhibits all appear in the volume, along with contributions from archaeologists, anthropologists, sociologists, geologists, and ecologists. The result is a major synthesis of the Bronze Age settlements and ritual sites of the Moor, contextualized within the Bronze Ages of southwestern and central Britain, and a tracing of the changing meaning of this landscape over the past five thousand years. Of obvious interest to those in British prehistory, this is a substantial presentation of a groundbreaking project that will also be of interest to many concerned with the interpretation of social landscapes and the public presentation of archaeology.

Reflexivity is a popular tool used to analyse personal, intersubjective and social processes which shape research projects. It enables researchers, particularly within the qualitative tradition, to acknowledge their role and the situated nature of their research. In the current climate, which sees the popularity of qualitative methods coupled with increased public and professional scrutiny of research, reflexivity provides a means of bolstering greater transparency and quality in research. This book recognises the considerable value of reflexivity to researchers, and provides a means to navigate this field. The book is foremost a practical guide which examines reflexivity at different stages of the research process. The editors and contributors offer candid approaches to the subject, which supply readers with diverse strategies on how to do reflexivity in practice.Features* Provides an accessible, practical guide to reflexive research processes, methods and outcomes* Encompasses both the health and social science fields* Includes contributions from international researchersThe book is aimed at postgraduate and final year students of health and social sciences. Interested clinicians will also find useful insights in the text.Pre-Publication Review CommentsI have enjoyed the reflexive journey very much, learned a lot and been excited to learn more. What else can one say of a well written and thought provoking book? . . . This is a book that is well overdue. I think it will attract a lot of interest - especially from those intrigued by methodology. I look forward to introducing my students to this text and I wish the editors every success.Vivien HollisProfessor and Chair, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Alberta, CanadaAlso of InterestReal World Research, Second EditionColin Robson0 631 21305 8Guided Reflection: Advancing PracticeChristopher Johns0 632 05975 3Visit our website: www.blackwellpublishing.com

Barry Smart offers a wide-ranging and critical discussion of how issues of reflexivity, ethics and moral responsibility inform social and political thought. Through a critical discussion of the `ambivalent fruits' of social analysis, exemplified in particular by the work of Foucault, Derrida, Lyotard, Baudrillard, Vattimo, Beck, Bourdieu, Goffman, Giddens, Levinas and Bauman, this book submits that an important responsibility of social enquiry today is to engage critically with the moral difficulties and ethical dilemmas which have arisen in relation to modernity.

                                Book Description

The arson attacks in 2006 on a number of small Baptist churches in rural Alabama recall the rash of burnings at predominantly black houses of worship that damaged or destroyed dozens of southern churches in the mid-1990s. One of the churches struck by probable arson in 1996 was Little Zion Baptist Church in Boligee, Alabama. This book draws on the voices and memories of church members to share a previously undocumented history of Little Zion, from its beginnings as a brush arbor around the time of emancipation, to its key role in the civil rights movement, to its burning and rebuilding with the help of volunteers from around the world.

Folklorist Shelly O'Foran, a Quaker who went to Boligee as a volunteer in the church rebuilding effort, describes Little Zion as always having been much more than the building itself. She shows how the spiritual and social traditions that the residents of Boligee practice and teach their children have assured the continued vitality of the church and community. Little Zion also explores the power of oral narrative, through thoughtful fieldwork and presentation, to promote understanding between those inside and outside the church community. Illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs, this volume is both a celebration of Little Zion's history and an invitation to share in its long life story.

                                  Book Description

How do we reflect upon ourselves and our concerns in relation to society, and vice versa? Human reflexivity works through 'internal conversations' using language, but also emotions, sensations and images. Most people acknowledge this 'inner-dialogue' and can report upon it. However, little research has been conducted on 'internal conversations' and how they mediate between our ultimate concerns and the social contexts we confront. Margaret Archer argues that reflexivity is progressively replacing routine action in late modernity, shaping how ordinary people make their way through the world. Using interviewees' life and work histories, she shows how 'internal conversations' guide the occupations people seek, keep or quit; their stances towards structural constraints and enablements; and their resulting patterns of social mobility.

                                    Book Description

Following the end of the Cold War, which has resulted in the United States being the dominant global power, this book examines patterns of behavior that have emerged in international politics. Drawing on constructivist insights, the author provides a sophisticated assessment of competing theories and sets the liberal, realist and institutionalist approaches off against each other in a quest for synthesis. Three case studies on Germany, China and Japan, identified as key states with the potential to challenge US dominance in this emerging new structure, provide evidence to support his assessment about the overall trajectory of international change in the post-Cold War period.

                                      Book Description

In this third Volume of Logological Investigations, Sandywell continues his sociological reconstruction of the origins of reflexive thought and discourse with special reference to pre-Socratic philosophy and science and their socio-political context.

He begins by criticizing traditional histories of philosophy which abstract speculative thought from its sociocultural and historical contexts, and proposes instead an explicitly contextual and reflexive approach to ancient Greek society and culture.

Each chapter is devoted to a seminal figure or "school" of reflection in early Greek philosophy. Special emphasis is placed upon the verbal and rhetorical innovations of protophilosophy in the sixth and fifth centuries BC. These chapters are also exemplary displays of the distinctive Logological method of culture analysis and through them Sandywell shows that by returning to the earliest problematics of reflexivity in pre-modern culture we may gain an insight into some of the central currents of modern and postmodern self-reflection.

5 out of 5 stars A good way to get a taste of King Philip's War.......2005-08-05

This is a very good read. It is a fictionalized account of many of the true events that occurred in King Philip's War. King Philip (Metacom) was the son of Massasoit who was helpful to the first settlers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (the Pilgrims).

Several incidents occurred to lead Philip to decide that his tribe had to get rid of the Settlers once and for all and get their country back unencumbered. Several events precipitated his decision to attack which aren't thoroughly covered here, but this is Historical Fiction and the author focused on the story he wanted to tell and he did it well.

At first I was not sure about the very spare writing style. You know how some authors lose you with how over the top the writing style is? Well there is no fear of that here. There is a magical simplicity to the style. It almost seemed directed to children at first, but later it was clear anyone in any age would enjoy this story.

The quote that lead to the Title is weird to me. "I am determined not to live until I have no country". These words were spoken by Metacom (King Philip) to Roger Williams. I guess they have some strength but all I can see is a double negative that might more easily say..."I will live when I have my land (without any of you newcomers on it). Since it was English as a second language, maybe I should be less of a nitpicker.

Well I really enjoyed the book and It was well written and a quick read. I applaud the author for directing his tale very effectively.

This is a fantastic book! Great story! Accurate historical facts! Well written. Enjoyed it very much!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good historical novel.......2000-10-06

This is a well written historical novel and the facts are woven into the story along with actual characters of the Massachusetts Bay Colony era.

Great book for female or male readers who like history.

The novel shows the feelings of the settlers as well as the Indians of King Phillip's War 1675-1676.......both sides loved and lost family members and friends.

The tension is constant and the book is "too soon finished".

4 out of 5 stars A vivid portrayal of the doomed war to oust the new Colonies.......1999-10-22

A Historical novel with the emphasis on history. Mike Tougias brings to life our first great Indian war by following the actions of two protagonists: One is "King Philip's" most trusted warrior and friend, the other a colonist from outlying Medfield, Mass. The scene is 50 years after Massasoit welcomed the Pilgrims to Plymouth, when his son Metacom (known to the colonists as Philip) instigates a last ditch war to oust the English colonists. The novel is adept at illuminating the way of life of the Wompanoags and other Algonquin tribes of Southern New England, and illustrates the difficulty of the task they felt compelled to undertake. Historical accuracy is Tougias' watchword, but he still manages to turn out a fast-paced compelling story. Although the author is more naturalist than novelist, it is hard to tell here as the characters, especially the Wompanoag ones, gain a depth throughout the story.

Mass. readers will get a lot of local color out of it - such as the events that led to the naming of Turner's Falls, but all readers will get a gripping story of a war whose basic themes would be repeated over and over for the next 200 years.

                                        Book Description

It used to be that two laptops, sitting side by side, couldn't communicate with each other; they may as well have been a thousand miles apart. But that was then, before the advent of Zero Configuration Networking technology. This amazing cross-platform open source technology automatically connects electronic devices on a network, allowing them to interoperate seamlessly-without any user configuration. So now you don't have to lift a finger! Needless to say, it has completely changed the way people connect to devices and programs for printing, file sharing, and other activities.

Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide walks you through this groundbreaking network technology, with a complete description of the protocols and ways to implement network-aware applications and devices.

Written by two Zero Configuration Networking experts, including one of Apple's own computer scientists, the book covers more than just file sharing and printing. Zero Configuration Networking also enables activities such as music and photo sharing and automatic buddy discovery on Instant Messaging applications. In fact, Zero Configuration Networking can be used for virtually any device that can be controlled by a computer. And this handy guide has the inside scoop on all of its capabilities-and how you can easily apply them in your own environment.

For the technically advanced, Zero Configuration Networking: The Definitive Guide examines the three core technologies that make up Zero Configuration Networking: Link-Local Addressing, Multicast DNS, and DNS Service Discovery. It also reviews a series of APIs, including C-API, Java API, CFNetServices, and Cocoa's NSNetServices.

Whether you want to understand how iTunes works, or you want to network a series of laptops and other devices at your office for maximum efficiency, you'll find all the answers in this authoritative guide.

Are you a curious user or software developer or hardware developer? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Steinberg and Stuart Cheshire, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that provides an in-depth look at the components of Zeroconf technology and a survey of programming APIs that will allow you to Zeroconf-enable your product.

Steinberg and Stuart Cheshire, begin by giving you a quick overview of the various components that make up Zeroconf. Then, the authors discuss link-local addressing. Next, they provide a description of multicast DNS. The authors then provide you with a description of DNS Service Discovery. They continue by introducing the concepts of DNS Service Discovery and focus on how it applies to discovering services on the local link using Multicast DNS. Then, the authors introduce the dns-sd command line toll that lets you experiment with Zeroconf service advertising and discovery before you actually write your first line of Zeroconf.code. Next, they introduce you to the C API for advertising and browsing for services. The authors then explain the Java API, which lets you write portable cross-platform programs that will run on any supported platform that ha Java and Zeroconf installed. They continue by describing two of the Bonjour APIs that are specific to Mac OS X: CFNet-Services and Cocoa's NSNetServices. Finally, they outline the Zeroconf support appearing in some unexpected languages like Ruby and Python.

This most excellent book shows you how you can, with very little effort, make your devices a lot easier to use. More importantly, this book explains how you can add the benefits of TCP/IP networking to your products without having to sacrifice ease of use.
