I love this book. What a stroll down Nostalgia Lane... ;) My only complaint is that there are no pictures on the inside of the book at all. You can read about things, but if you're trying to explain to a child or someone who does not know, pictures would be nice. I like this book but I will be on the lookout for one with pictures.

i loved this book. a great way to bring back old memories of my youth. it was hard to think of something that wasn't in the book. i'm ordering a couple of the books as gifts for childhood friends.

This almost everything, (but not) pop culture book, is really very good, almost great.
It has classic TV shows, movies, top 40 music, Fads,
commercials, classic toy's, classic candy bars, great Icons, comics, and much more, popular and not very popular, about stuff from the 1950's to 1990's.
Babyboomers should have fun browsing in this book, but younger and older should like this book also.
The biggest problem with this book, is putting it down.
A book with, The Beatles, Jonny Quest, Coca Cola, Captain Kangaroo, Gilligan's Island, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mini Skirts, The Flintstones, and much much more in one book can't be all bad.
Almost everything? almost, and almost everybody, should have fun reading this book.

I give this book two stars from an econometrician's point of view. This book focuses on linear models related to ANOVA and hence may have a good audience in disciplines such as statistics, biostatistics, etc, but it has ABSOLUTELY nothing useful for people interested in econometrics or financial statistics.
For example, the book doesn't even mention heteroskedasticity at all, and there's absolutely no time series coverage. In econometrics we also do weighted regressions a lot, and this book doesn't have anything.
I wish the book title had been more descriptive. Linear models are many stripes and used in many different disciplines. By using such a catch-call title, the book is misleading.
So, if you want to do linear models in economics or finance, do NOT buy this book.
fourth edition with useful new features.......2002-07-02
This is the fourth edition of this primer on linear models by Littell and Freund. As with the previous editions it gives a thorough treatment of the models and their application through the use of SAS procedures. In the fourth edition, Walter Stroup has been added and Phil Spector dropped as coauthor. Also this edition drops the word "System" in the title after "SAS". The main addition to this edition is the inclusion of a lot of detailed information on the application of mixed effects models through use of the MIXED procedure. There is a great deal of comparison of the differences between PROC MIXED and PROC GLM in the analysis of these models. Many interesting examples are presented and care is taken to show the user how to specify the models so as to get the appropriate analysis. They also teach you enough to aid in interpreting the output.
Littell, Milliken, Stoup and Wofinger have also written a very nice book titled "The SAS System for Mixed Models" and my only question would be to ask "which book offers more?" This fourth edition seems to now cover many of the same topics that highlight that book.
Readers should be aware of the two books and should investigate for themselves the differences and overlap before deciding to purchase either one. One clear difference is the date of publication. This book, published in 2002, is more current and has several references from 1997 and after whereas the mixed models book was published in 1996.

To gain the most benefit from this book, readers should be familiar with multiple linear regression, have practical experience using multiple regression on real data, and be comfortable interpreting the output from a regression analysis. An understanding of logistic regression and Poisson regression is a plus. Some experience with SAS is helpful, but not required.

This book has an abundance of in depth information that is presented very well and is an excellent resource for experimental designs. I found this book easy to follow. Not only do you get an understanding of linear models but you also get a great tutorial on the SAS codes. It was initially to be a cross-reference manual, but I ended up reading it cover-to-cover twice due to the many helpful strategies that I learnt. This is a great book to have around the office.

Although most analyses were done with the MIXED procedure of the SAS software package, and many of its features are clearly elucidated, considerable effort was spent in presenting the data analyses in a software-independent fashion. Geert Verbeke is Assistant Professor at the Biostatistical Centre for Clinical Trials of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics (1989) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the M.S. in biostatistics (1992) from the Limburgs Universitair Centrum, and earned a PhD in biostatistics (1995) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Dr. Verkeke wrote his dissertation, as well as a number of methodological articles, on various aspects on linear mixed models for longitudinal data analysis. He has held visiting positions at the Gerontology Researh Center and the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD). Geert Molenberghs is Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum in Belgium. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics (1988) and a PhD in biostatistics (1993) from the Universiteit Antwerpen. good treatment but new book is better.......2000-09-22
I agree with the brief comments of the other Amazon reviewer. However, these authors have updated the material in a book just published in 2000 "Linear Mixed Models for Longitudinal Data". The approach is the same in both books but the new one contains a lot of new advances that have occurred over the last three years. If you want a thorough account with the latest developments buy the other book. I have given a thorough review of the other book for Amazon. On the other hand if you just want to learn longitudinal data analysis this monograph will work for you and may be less expensive since it is in paperback while the other book is only currently in hardcover. Both books illustrate examples using SAS Proc Mixed.

Linear mixed model has been widely used in biomedical reserach, such as longitudinal observational studies and clinical trials. However, the model is theoretically complicated, and is hard to use it. This book not only covers statistical methodologies related to this model, but also gives excellent examples which can teach the readers how to use it.
