Book Description

Take a walk . . . down memory lane, you Boomers and Gen Xers! From ABBA to Zoom is sure to grab anyone born in the 1950s, '60s, '70s, or '80s. Whether you grew up watching The Huckleberry Hound Show, Johnny Quest, or Sesame Street, this cultural encyclopedia is sure to draw you into a nostalgic and fun-filled read that you just can't put down.

American pop culture aficionado David Mansour spent 18 years accumulating an extensive collection of dolls, lunch boxes, board games, TV memorabilia, and other items from the 1960s through the '90s. That fascination, along with his lifelong lists-from "best toys" to "all-time coolest singers"-were the genesis for this wide-ranging volume of Boomer and Generation X treasures.

Readers will relish the mere mention of some of their greatest childhood and adolescent connections, then rush to learn the well-researched details behind those icons. Farrah Fawcett's feathered hair, James Bond movies, Lost in Space, Woodstock-it's all here! In page after page, more than 3,000 references arranged alphabetically make this a true trip through the Boom Times. Totally groovy!

4 out of 5 stars only 4 stars because of lack of inside pictures.......2007-08-30

I love this book. What a stroll down Nostalgia Lane... ;) My only complaint is that there are no pictures on the inside of the book at all. You can read about things, but if you're trying to explain to a child or someone who does not know, pictures would be nice. I like this book but I will be on the lookout for one with pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-29

This is an amazing book. It's very imformative for anyone growing up in these eras or wanting to learn more about the eras. I'd recomend it for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars walking down memory lane.......2006-02-27

i loved this book. a great way to bring back old memories of my youth. it was hard to think of something that wasn't in the book. i'm ordering a couple of the books as gifts for childhood friends.

5 out of 5 stars Almost everything? almost,.......2005-08-15

This almost everything, (but not) pop culture book, is really very good, almost great.

It has classic TV shows, movies, top 40 music, Fads,
commercials, classic toy's, classic candy bars, great Icons, comics, and much more, popular and not very popular, about stuff from the 1950's to 1990's.

Babyboomers should have fun browsing in this book, but younger and older should like this book also.

The biggest problem with this book, is putting it down.

A book with, The Beatles, Jonny Quest, Coca Cola, Captain Kangaroo, Gilligan's Island, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Mini Skirts, The Flintstones, and much much more in one book can't be all bad.

Almost everything? almost, and almost everybody, should have fun reading this book.

2 out of 5 stars Absolutely useless for economists and finance pros.......2005-06-09

I give this book two stars from an econometrician's point of view. This book focuses on linear models related to ANOVA and hence may have a good audience in disciplines such as statistics, biostatistics, etc, but it has ABSOLUTELY nothing useful for people interested in econometrics or financial statistics.

For example, the book doesn't even mention heteroskedasticity at all, and there's absolutely no time series coverage. In econometrics we also do weighted regressions a lot, and this book doesn't have anything.

I wish the book title had been more descriptive. Linear models are many stripes and used in many different disciplines. By using such a catch-call title, the book is misleading.

So, if you want to do linear models in economics or finance, do NOT buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars fourth edition with useful new features.......2002-07-02

This is the fourth edition of this primer on linear models by Littell and Freund. As with the previous editions it gives a thorough treatment of the models and their application through the use of SAS procedures. In the fourth edition, Walter Stroup has been added and Phil Spector dropped as coauthor. Also this edition drops the word "System" in the title after "SAS". The main addition to this edition is the inclusion of a lot of detailed information on the application of mixed effects models through use of the MIXED procedure. There is a great deal of comparison of the differences between PROC MIXED and PROC GLM in the analysis of these models. Many interesting examples are presented and care is taken to show the user how to specify the models so as to get the appropriate analysis. They also teach you enough to aid in interpreting the output.

Littell, Milliken, Stoup and Wofinger have also written a very nice book titled "The SAS System for Mixed Models" and my only question would be to ask "which book offers more?" This fourth edition seems to now cover many of the same topics that highlight that book.

Readers should be aware of the two books and should investigate for themselves the differences and overlap before deciding to purchase either one. One clear difference is the date of publication. This book, published in 2002, is more current and has several references from 1997 and after whereas the mixed models book was published in 1996.

      Book Description

Fixed Effects Regression Methods for Longitudinal Data Using SAS is an invaluable resource for all researchers interested in adding fixed effects regression methods to their tool kit of statistical techniques. First introduced by economists, fixed effects methods are gaining widespread use throughout the social sciences. Designed to eliminate major biases from regression models with multiple observations (usually longitudinal) for each subject (usually a person), fixed effects methods essentially offer control for all stable characteristics of the subjects, even characteristics that are difficult or impossible to measure. This straightforward and thorough text shows you how to estimate fixed effects models with several SAS procedures that are appropriate for different kinds of outcome variables. The theoretical background of each model is explained, and the models are then illustrated with detailed examples using real data. The book contains thorough discussions of the following uses of SAS procedures: PROC GLM for estimating fixed effects linear models for quantitative outcomes, PROC LOGISTIC for estimating fixed effects logistic regression models, PROC PHREG for estimating fixed effects Cox regression models for repeated event data, PROC GENMOD for estimating fixed effects Poisson regression models for count data, PROC CALIS for estimating fixed effects structural equation models. To gain the most benefit from this book, readers should be familiar with multiple linear regression, have practical experience using multiple regression on real data, and be comfortable interpreting the output from a regression analysis. An understanding of logistic regression and Poisson regression is a plus. Some experience with SAS is helpful, but not required.

      Book Description

Daniel Zelterman applies his extensive SAS knowledge and biostatistics experience to illustrate how to use the GENMOD procedure to analyze log-linear models for categorical data. His wide variety of examples illustrate the statistical applications PROC GENMOD can perform. He thoroughly describes the models, provides real data examples, supplies the necessary code, and explains the output from GENMOD. The topics covered include: the Pearson goodness of fit statistic; tables of categorical data; a review of log-linear model methods for rectangular tables of categorical data; extrapolation methods to estimate population size; new models and distributions for statistical analysis of data; and issues in power analysis and estimating sample size in experiments. The models take advantage of the wide class of generalized linear models and use real data from pharmaceutical studies and epidemiology, wildlife, and government statistics. Statisticians who have a basic under! standing both of SAS and the analysis of categorical data will greatly benefit from this book. The discussion of each model and method emphasizes statistical aspects, such as interpretation of results, rather than programming skills. The numerous examples are used to motivate the theory and methods as they are discussed.

Not only do you get an understanding of linear models but you also get a great tutorial on the SAS codes. It was initially to be a cross-reference manual, but I ended up reading it cover-to-cover twice due to the many helpful strategies that I learnt. This is a great book to have around the office.

          Book Description

Reviewing the theory of the general linear model (GLM) using a general framework, Univariate and Multivariate General Linear Models: Theory and Applications with SAS, Second Edition presents analyses of simple and complex models, both univariate and multivariate, that employ data sets from a variety of disciplines, such as the social and behavioral sciences. With revised examples that include options available using SAS 9.0, this expanded edition divides theory from applications within each chapter. Following an overview of the GLM, the book introduces unrestricted GLMs to analyze multiple regression and ANOVA designs as well as restricted GLMs to study ANCOVA designs and repeated measurement designs. Extensions of these concepts include GLMs with heteroscedastic errors that encompass weighted least squares regression and categorical data analysis, and multivariate GLMs that cover multivariate regression analysis, MANOVA, MANCOVA, and repeated measurement data analyses. The book also analyzes double multivariate linear, growth curve, seeming unrelated regression (SUR), restricted GMANOVA, and hierarchical linear models. New to the Second Edition · Two chapters on finite intersection tests and power analysis that illustrates the experimental GLMPOWER procedure · Expanded theory of unrestricted general linear, multivariate general linear, SUR, and restricted GMANOVA models to comprise recent developments · Expanded material on missing data to include multiple imputation and the EM algorithm · Applications of MI, MIANALYZE, TRANSREG, and CALIS procedures A practical introduction to GLMs, Univariate and Multivariate General Linear Models demonstrates how to fully grasp the generality of GLMs by discussing them within a general framework.

                Book Description

This is author-approved bcc: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of linear mixed models, a technique devised to analyze continuous correlated data. It focuses on examples from designed experiments and longitudinal studies. The target audience includes applied statisticians and biomedical researchers in industry, public health organizations, contract research organizations, and academia. The book is explanatory rather than mathematical rigorous. Although most analyses were done with the MIXED procedure of the SAS software package, and many of its features are clearly elucidated, considerable effort was spent in presenting the data analyses in a software-independent fashion. Geert Verbeke is Assistant Professor at the Biostatistical Centre for Clinical Trials of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics (1989) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the M.S. in biostatistics (1992) from the Limburgs Universitair Centrum, and earned a PhD in biostatistics (1995) from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Dr. Verkeke wrote his dissertation, as well as a number of methodological articles, on various aspects on linear mixed models for longitudinal data analysis. He has held visiting positions at the Gerontology Researh Center and the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD). Geert Molenberghs is Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the Limburgs Universitair Centrum in Belgium. He received the B.S. degree in mathematics (1988) and a PhD in biostatistics (1993) from the Universiteit Antwerpen. Dr. Molenberghs published methodological work on the analysis of non-response, and non-compliance in clinical trials. He serves as an associate editor for Biometrics and Applied

5 out of 5 stars good treatment but new book is better.......2000-09-22

I agree with the brief comments of the other Amazon reviewer. However, these authors have updated the material in a book just published in 2000 "Linear Mixed Models for Longitudinal Data". The approach is the same in both books but the new one contains a lot of new advances that have occurred over the last three years. If you want a thorough account with the latest developments buy the other book. I have given a thorough review of the other book for Amazon. On the other hand if you just want to learn longitudinal data analysis this monograph will work for you and may be less expensive since it is in paperback while the other book is only currently in hardcover. Both books illustrate examples using SAS Proc Mixed.

Linear mixed model has been widely used in biomedical reserach, such as longitudinal observational studies and clinical trials. However, the model is theoretically complicated, and is hard to use it. This book not only covers statistical methodologies related to this model, but also gives excellent examples which can teach the readers how to use it.
