Another Excellent Book By Terry Stickels!.......2000-01-17
Terry Stickels ALWAYS makes his puzzles fun, while still educational, and the variety of types of puzzles, and varying levels of difficulty in the problems make certain than everyone will find something worthwhile within the pages of his books.
What you get in this tome: 150 excellent puzzles that I will look back over many times in the coming years. Also look on Amazon for Terry's other puzzles books, calendars and (if/when Amazon starts to sell them) his top notch Knowledge Cards, of which there are now many decks.
America's Mathemagician Has Another Winner!.......1999-06-27
Terry Stickels' Mind-Bending Puzzle series (soon to be 4 volumes and 7 card decks... plus his yearly calendar) is still the best thing going in puzzle land. Even the legendary Martin Gardner is a fan. ( He has written the forward for the first in this series.) I hope Pomegranate Publishing keeps producing his material... they do an excellent job.
Stickels, The Puzzlemaster: America's Finest.......1999-06-27
How is it that Terry Stickels' work keeps getting better and better? Every student and most adults should have Mr. Stickels' puzzles as part of their daily diet. Bravo, sir... and please keep those puzzle books coming!
The top puzzle writer inthe world today.......1999-03-29
We want more Terry Stickels... he ranks up there with Gardner and Stewart
Any of Mr. Stickels' puzzles are better than the rest........1999-03-29
Don't even waste your time with the other puzzle books being written. Stickels has them all beat. His spatial - visual puzzles are the most creative and challenging I've seen. His more difficult math puzzles are the most original.

Good book.......2006-12-22
Seeing the not so great reviews of this book I almost did not buy the book.
You will definitely need to find your own way through this project but this book is really informative. The author surely knows what he is talking about and its a fun read.
Ridiculously bad book.......2006-03-15
Hard to give justice in words alone to exactly how bad this book is. A full review requires much gesturing, cursing and the throwing of objects.
You can find much more useful information online.
Books this bad are criminal acts of fraud.
Go to HobbyCNC dot com instead. Much better plans.......2005-04-29
There are too many major flaws in this book. He builds his machine with a Nu-Arc camera positioner. How is anyone else supposed to find this exact model? Probably the worst part are the IC logic and driver chips. You will not be able to put this together unless you are already an experienced electronic technician.
He shows you a schematic with some seemingly 80's era integrated circuits. (Judging by the xerox-looking images and misspelled words). These chips are hopelessly out of date. Modern chips have built in protective diodes, so you won't have to search all of creation for the ones his plans require. The way to go is to by a driver kit for $20 from Electronickits.com. (You'll need 3 of these).
Some things he did made me wonder why:
1) Why have so many little jumper points on the boards for options that are unlikely to be used? I bought wire connectors for these unneccessarily. He didn't list mini-jumpers in the parts list. Only after very carefully studying the pictures, can you see what he is doing.
2) On page 4 he says he was impressed by how nice the Pac-Sci stepper motor people were to him when they were selling him his motors. On page 14 he says that he's not using Pac-Sci motors! Why? What happened? We paid some bones for this book and we want to learn from his experience. There just isn't enough explaining in this book.
On the good side is that this book will teach you how easy it is to make your own circuit boards: Laser paper and an iron. You have to experiment a little, but it is very satisfying to know that you will be able to make your own boards if the need arises. I found that removing the paper while it is still hot will deposit enough "resist". No need to soak in water. The chemicals aren't really that nasty (even Radio Shack sells them). Just use warm water instead of a burner and wait longer than you otherwise might. BTW if you already own this book take a look at the lower picture on page 102. I had to wonder why is he using a different resist pattern than the one he wants us to use. He should be consistent between his photos and what we're supposed to do.
I think that Dave Rigotti's book is much much better. He will personally give you advice through his Yahoo site. And, it's "cozy". By that I mean there aren't 5000 things on the site to get everything confused. His is more focused.
I'd give this book a 1, but I did learn how to make my own PCB's and he also recommends a decent CAD CAM software (KCam).
Disappointed - Many details left out........2004-03-14
I was very disappointed that many important details were left out. Anyone who does a little research on the internet and has seen a CNC router knows the basics of what makes up a machine. What the book promised were the details of how to build your own. The details and parts lists were left out. Those are the critical items. Your money would be much better spent buying a good set of plans from the internet. There are many bulletin boards and web sites that have good information. Research them.
Not the Best.......2003-12-21
This book is NOT what was promised. The parts list is very lacking..you must be very familliar with electronics just to be able to order the parts..specifications would have been nice. Labeling and numbering the circuit boards would have saved tons of time. I did get a set of boards built that will run the stepper motors..I believe most of the information is correct but very hard to understand and follow..a few more wiring diagrams or more complete schematics would have been a great improvement. I could write a book on how to use this book and I have not started the gantry yet. It would have been nice to have more advice on motor selection and what it takes to drive what..too much left to guesswork.
Book Description
The CNC Workshop workbook is designed to introduce students to CNC and provide them with an opportunity to learn and practice at their own pace. The CBT and software, CNC Workshop with TORCOMP CNCez Java Edition, enforces important concepts and allows students to create CNC programs and test them in a simulated manufacturing environment. The CNC Workshop lessens the dependence on traditional classroom-style learning and maximizes the amount of hands-on CNC programming time available to each student. Using the simulation software allows the student to perform dry runs of all CNC programs in a simulated manufacturing environment. TORCOMP's CNCez Java Edition allows students to define and save their custom machine configurations, as well as the ability to display machined solid models of their programs. By using TORCOMP CNCez Java Edition to test a program, students need to use a CNC machine tool only for final confirmation of a design.
Customer Reviews:
Buy it for simulator, not for the text........2004-06-08
The poor quality text comes with a CD which has a poor quality software package; but you can not beat it (currently) for the price. The mill and lathe simulators work. They are very buggy.
Support is non-responsive.
The text has distinctly Canadian terminology. Many important concepts are explained poorly or important parameters for commands are ignored while common ones are constantly repeated. The text organization is poor for teaching CNC. It is oriented to teach the use of the simulators. The index is typical in that it is not complete. It does not make a good manual.
The software is great for the price only because there is nothing else like it (that my school has found). It tends to crash a lot. It is quite buggy for commercial software. In a lab at school we are constantly having to kill the program and restart. The software does not allow the user to use favorite editor. Instead the user is forced to use a very poor editor. The authors should free the software and hope to get help from the
user community.
Not too bad or good.......2004-06-01
The book seems ok for a noob like me, since i'm not an expert i can not give an acurate rating on how good the book is compared to others, but it was easy to understand and the software make it easy. BUT there in the software was my main problem, because for some reason it just was immposible to install it propertly. Just the simple fact that i was using 2 hard drives becomes a problem during installation, the Java never seems to work right and the interface never worked right. I did make it work at the end, but toke me a long time and a lot of work. So that's why it sucks.
many errors, poor software.......2003-10-08
The software is Java based, tends to freeze up, and is not accurate. I found many errors in the book in CNC format and programming terminology. Download a free simulator from the web and purchase a better book if you want to learn CNC trade properly.
Excellent Value.......2003-08-30
After working almost 20 years as a (mostly CNC) machinist, I now teach manual and CNC machining to high school 11th and 12th graders. ýThe CNC Workbooký is a highly valuable resource for introducing CNC knowledge and programming to my students.
ýThe CNC Workshopý is priced similar to other CNC training books that donýt include any software. However, this book also includes a training CD that works fairly well. One of the features of the CD is simulation software for both lathe and mill. The only CNC simulation software I have found so far that is any better than this one costs [$$] for the lathe simulator and another [$$] for the mill simulator. To get both of those lathe and mill simulators adds up to more than 20 times the price of ýThe CNC Workshop.ý
While the book is not perfect, and while the software can be a bit temperamental, this has to be the best CNC training-guide value on the market. The book and software donýt replace me as a teacher, but they do make my teaching efforts way more effective. My classroom is a better place because of this book.

Software issues.......2006-12-26
I could not get the simulators from the CD to run. I have the most recent associated software updates and a well-maintained virus-free newer computer. I saw a disclaimer somewhere while struggling with trying to get the simulator to run that it may not operate correctly with more current versions of bla-bla software, so I'm not sure. Anyway, if the software that comes with this book can't be made user-friendly enough to run with a minimum of hassle, then it's not much good to me. Yes, I will try to get one of my computer expert buddies to assist, but should I really have to do that after paying good money for this book/CD??
I Totally Agree with the Previous Review!.......2004-05-05
I have spent hundreds of dollars looking for the perfect CNC "all in one" book. I have read all the reviews from "CNC authorities(LOL)" bad mouthing this book/CD. The CNC Workshop is the book you want if you know nothing about CNC and would prefer a multimedia presentation and a CNC Milling simulator and a CNC turning simulator to try your hand at machining a CNC part on your computer.
READ THIS!: This is strictly an introduction to CNC..That's all!..That's all it was meant to be!..and it is darn good at what it does. After you have saturated your brain with the info in the multimedia presentation...get the CNC Programming Handbook by Peter Smid to get you past the basics.
I have used the multimedia presentation numerous times to teach new CNC operators the basics. You have to start somewhere and this is an entertaining way to learn.
Get a Life!.......2002-05-11
As a 12 year experienced journeyman, I found the book and program to do exactly what was expected. When someone buys a book or tries to learn from a book. Its intended purpose is to teach a person the foundation of the subject matter. This book was designed to give just that. I have tested the software and found no problems that would have not occurred in a real life situation. Do not teach students that if your CNC does not work or crashes, than the CNC machine or manufacturer [stinks]! To the teachers of the world that complain that it does not work. Get a Life! In the real world, CNC operations do just what you complain about, they CRASH. Now teach your students how to correct the problem. Stop teaching them how to complain. The software and book, and any book of learning, are not intended to make you and expert. It is to TEACH people that want to learn about the subject mater! Do to the number of different CNC interfaces that are on the market or being used in the REAL world. The book tells you right from the beginning, that codes are different to each machine manufacturer. That most machines are based off of the ISO standards, but use their own codes. If someone wants to learn the foundation of CNC's then this is a book for them.
Could I get my money back??.......2001-11-27
My school gave me CNC Workshop and we never use it. I put programming into simulation and doesn't work. I think there is much missing information.
A poorly written, inaccurate text.......2001-10-28
This book sells well because of the simulator CD which impresses beginners and highschool level students. Anyone with CNC machining experience and know-how will come away disappointed.
CNC Workshop illustrates dozens of factual errors in programming format, it contains some glaring omissions, and spends far too much space promoting its own flawed software. This software has crashed and frozen up in many of my students' computers and fails to accurately portray CNC motion.
This is an adequate book for very basic level CNC knowledge or for people with only elementary knowledge of the English language. It does an acceptable job of explaining some basic NC concepts and the multimedia package (NOT the simulator) is fairly helpful for educators. It would be a fine book for $35 in a highschool shop class, but does not deserve to share shelf space with books by Smid, Lynch, Valentino, Krar, or Curran.

Book Description
The CNC Workshop is the only Computer Numerical Control (CNC) text and multimedia package currently available. This flexible, unique package provides many benefits that can't be found in stand-alone texts. Using the multimedia CD-ROM, students can visualize CNC concepts through vivid animations, virtually visit machine shops through videoclips of processes and machine tools, and view numerous examples. The CD also features CNCez, simulation software that actually allows students to program numerical control code and then see a simulation of the tool path or process that the code would generate. The code can also be sent to an actual machine. This package is an excellent simulation and animation tool for milling and turning and can be used to test existing programs or write and edit new programs.
This package covers the basics of CNC programming, including step-by-step coverage of machining processes, fundamentals of CNC, and basic CNC programming concepts. It can be used as a stand-alone package in a hands-on CNC course or can be used as a supplement in a comprehensive manufacturing process or numerical controls course. The book and CD package is an excellent instruction tool for CNC programming and many of the animations and videoclips can be used for classroom presentation.
Customer Reviews:
nothing useful in the book.......2002-07-27
I get this book in college. I am student of CNC studies and machining. This book did not have the knowledge we need and teacher did not like useing it because mistakes in it.
The CD does not work for almost half our class.
Vic
Terribly simplistic.......2002-07-13
I take exception to the previous reviewer's statement that the average machinist reads at a grade 7 level. He must not confuse his own reading skills with those of others working in the trade.
CNC Workshop is a big disappointment. As the other person pointed out, you can get far better simulators (freeware) from the web. There is very little of use to anyone but highschool kids in this book.
Buy Smid's or Mike Lynch's book for REAL cnc knowledge.
Uh..Duh..THE PLANET EARTH'S BEST CNC BARGAIN !!!.......2002-04-18
I am a CNC machinist and also conduct CNC training for my company. No book or CNC simulation program I have ever come across is perfect(the world is not perfect). This book and multimedia CD package is no exception, it has a few flaws. I can live with the flaws because the quality and value of the material is super! Nowhere will you find a CNC training package this good at this ridiculously low price!!!
This is not college level text and it shouldn't be. The average machinist reads on a 7th grade reading level. I've used training material costing thousands of dollars and the trainees were so intimidated that half of them struggled. The CNC Workshop package gets rave reviews from the trainees and there is a significant performance increase on the shop floor.
One of the best bargains you will ever find!!
A terrible book full of errors and omissions.......2001-11-20
I am not sure what planet the previous reviewer was on, but this is probably the worst CNC text on the market. ALL of the canned cycles are incorrectly described. Most of the programs have errors in them. TAPPING IS NOT EVEN MENTIONED! Radius comp is grossly misrepresented. Partoff and groove programming skipped all-together, and there is no mention of macros, setting offsets, or incremental programming on lathes. Milling codes are used on lathes and the simulator makes an even bigger mess of things.
Anyone who truly understands CNC Programming will come away disappointed. This is a book for highschool kids, nothing more.
WOW Double WOW!!!.......1999-07-27
WOW double WOW!!! I don't know how these guys do what they have done for the price. First let me say this is a totally unsolicited review of a great training tool. I am journeyman machinist, who teaches CNC operators for a large Fortune 500 company and I also teach at 2 local community colleges. I have over 25 years experience in the field of machining and teaching. One of the colleges recently received a training contract for a small job shop with limited funds, so I got on the net to price a Torcomp product I have used in the past "The CNC Workbook" and I ran across a new product "The CNC Workshop". I sent for a copy figuring same stuff different package, was I shocked, anyone or school with a PC can have a complete CNC training course right out of the box. I have reviewed numerous CNC training materials over the years, and have written my own, but this is the very best ever. I have seen many with prices in the thousands that cannot touch this package. "The CNC Workshop" can be used as part of an instructor lead class or can use by individuals to learn on their own. I am worried about my teaching job once "The CNC Workshop" gets out
