Customer Reviews:
Good, the first 500 times :-P.......2007-04-24
Part of the Suzuki Method relies on hearing the music about 8000 times before the child graduates the particular "book". If you (and your child) do the method properly, you will have this entire cd memorised and may even be sick of it by then. It is well done, nicely clear for advanced beginners and has a clear piano part.
Still waiting..........2007-04-11
Ordered the Book and CD together, received the book, but now over one month later am still waiting for the CD. It would be nice if could have had the CD with the music book.

Welcome to Suzuki parenthood!.......2001-12-13
It's not the book that makes the difference in this set, it's the recording. That said, READ the introductory section! Don't worry about reading the music - even the introduction itself says students are not expected to read music until BOOK FOUR. (If your teacher slips it in earlier, find another teacher. Anything else is not true Suzuki Method. Suzuki Method/Mother Tongue method is an AUDITORY method.) Read the lines, and read between the lines. Remember, Suzuki was oriental - no brow beating here; only much sublety. A point is made once, and you are expected to retain it. Reread every 6 months.
Suzuki saw that music is the one true study of mankind. If you study music thoroughly and completely (!) you will learn about mathematics, art, physics, language, animals, emotions, history, religion, cultures. . . it is music that is the common thread among all peoples of the earth. Music develops sensitivity, expression, self confidence, self discipline, spirituality and all qualities which at their fullest expression turn us from men into Man.
David Cerone performs the Suzuki materials better than any one else. Unlike Suzuki himself, who didn't pick up a violin until he was in his 20s, David learned early and plays that much better than the Suzuki version. He admits he worked harder on these recordings than on any other professional recordings, sweating through perfect performances only to redo and redo and redo trying to create just the right inflection and emotion. He knew that thousands of hopeful young violinists would listen to these songs: working song 50 times a day, polish songs 20 times a day, upcoming song 50 times a day. Day after day after day! And then imitate it. He wanted to give them the best to look up to. He sees children as precious seeds, and gives them only the purest water music for their growth. Don't settle for anything less!

Master of Game Books.......2000-04-12
Even though the "Master of" computer games - Orion, Orion II and Magic - are no longer published, they are constantly on the classics list of many players. This book is as thorough and well produced as any guide you'll ever find, and a perfect complement to an excellent game. Very detailed and explanatory. When the games fade from your hard drive (years from now), this book will still be on your shelf as an example of "how it *should* be done."

Customer Reviews:
Great Game Terrible Guide.......2007-04-20
I recently dug out this classic game and the worthless guide I'm currently reviewing.
This book is simply a glorified version of the game manual. Its "hints and tips" amount to little more than creating data tables of the various weapons, environments, et al in the game. There is very little, if any, actual advice on how to win the game.
What really got me was the advice that, if one is having difficulty playing in a small universe or with a certain species...the author's don't tell you how to win in said environment, but rather suggest changing to a larger universe or trying an easier species. How enlightening. It fails to suggest strategies if one is low on money or behind in research or militarily, etc, etc, etc. This constitutes a guide!?! It also fails to suggest favorable ship types/combinations as the first game's guide did. It basically says, "It's up to you." This book is a failure on every level.
Truly, this book is not worth the paper it's written on. It was written by individuals who worked on the games development but who, obviously, didn't actually *play* the game. If you do happen to need help with this truly great game, look online. You'll find much better help there. This is the last Prima hint book I'll ever spend money on.
Extremely helpful!.......2001-08-02
This guide (which I found at a half-price bookstore) is very helpful. I use it often. My copy of MOO II did not include a printed manual, so I wanted a some sort of hard copy. There are a few minor mistakes in the printing, but is a great guide!
The most useful strategy guide I've read........1999-03-15
Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares is a very difficult strategy game intent on making the colonization of the galaxy as realistic as possible. The Strategy Guide assists you in doing just that.
The main force of influence in the Strategy Guide is the explanation of every little bitty thing inside of the game. The technologies for Research are completely explained in detail, in addition to suggestions being given for what to choose and at what time to choose them. The alien "Picks" option that allows you to customize aliens is completely explained and suggestions for alien creation are put forth. However, the writers have a bent for challenging themselves, which I highly suggest to veteran players of the game.
All in all, it explains the entire campaign necessary to bring down those pesky Antarans and how to best keep a Space Eel from spawning. Give it a peek sometime. You won't be disappointed.

A good strategy guide if you don't know the game.......2005-01-21
Seriously, this guide is pretty good.
It may not have things it promised (*cough*mp*cough*),
but it is a pretty useful game guide when it gets down to it. If you were having
trouble with the game,
this is a must.
book and game pretty worthless.......2003-04-14
Got MOO3 and the guide for my birthday. Both are pretty wortheless, but the guide especially so since it is no guide. If you loved Alpha Cnetauri or the Civ games, you'll be severly disappointed with MOO3 and the strategy guide.
See other reviews for details. Don't waste your money on this...
not a strategy guide.......2003-04-07
its more like a manual spin-off than a strategy guide. It doesn't tell you how to do anything. It has lame tutorials for all the races and it only gives you some *hints* (all of which you can find out online). The whole book basically leaves it up to you figure everything out.
It could have been so many times better. Its almost like the person who wrote it never played it and just read the manual and interviewed the staff to get some details.
Instead of giving you strategies and tips on how to play more effeciently or giving you different styles of play, it just goes through all the screens one at a time and repeats most of whats in the manual.
The name of book is false advertisment. It should be named:
Master of Orion 3: The Ultimate Space Strategy Game: Prima's Official Redundant Manual
Don't waste your $$$$.......2003-03-22
this "guide" is practically worthless! it does NOT explain ANYTHING that is not explained in the manual, even with as much as there was that was left unexplained by that dicument. there are not really any "strategies" in this "strategy guide". i know that it is not possible to write a walkthrough for a game of this type, but i was hoping for a guide to explain the many things that the manual did not, like specific measures to combat unrest, etc. this book does not do that. the only things i found useful in this book are explanations in game terms of what each Orion Senate proposal does and explanations for what tone of voice, so to speak, to use in diplomatic offers to the different races. it also rates each race in terms of "playability" that is marginally useful. if i had it to do over again i would NOT buy this book.
no reason to buy it now.......2003-02-26
it is Feb 25th and the game is out
no reason to buy this guide to whet your appetite
no reason to preview the game
get better information online
...await the patch, maybe, but
consider the only favorable review is from Texas

Customer Reviews:
Wrong Index, an OK reference.......2005-09-16
So far I'm frustrated with this book because the index was incorrect, if this happens to you go to http://www.moo.com/books/rwqx5/qxbook/updates-rwqx6.html and download the new one or try [...]. For the price it would have been nice to get a CD tutorial. Also I needed help setting up bulleted items and eventually got what I needed looking up tabs and style sheets, but there wasn't much specific information within the book for what seemed like a basic task. I did like the general way it is written in a casual but professional style.
Example of Quark XPress's nature.......2005-02-01
Also received a copy w/ the bad index, but it was replaced promptly, so hard to complain on that front.
The book could be greatly improved w/ more discussion of how to avoid typographic difficulties in the first place, for example, noting that one should set the special command for not breaking a word after keying in a hard hyphen if one doesn't want compound words to be hyphenated (by most standards they shouldn't).
It's also rather ironic that the author complains of the New York Times hyphenating ``doesn't'' after the ``s'' (on pg. 363) when there are multiple instances in the book of hyphenating ``didn't'' after the second ``d'', as well as at least one three word ``stack'' and a fair number of hyphenated words which fall on the bottom of right-hand pages.
Wrong Index!.......2005-01-20
I bought this book because I was very happy with Blatner's Real World Quark 4 book. However, when I got this one, the index did not match the book at all. So I returned it to Amazon with instructions for a replacement book with the correct index. I received the second book and its index was incorrect too. So beware! If you are buying this book as a reference book, then you may want to skip this one and purchase another one.
Essential reference, great step-by-steps, fun read.......2004-10-31
I've been a Quark authorized trainer since 1994, and a Quark-using designer since a couple years before that, and there is no way I could use this program to its fullest extent without a current version of Blatner's QuarkXPress book at my side.
Though Blatner is writing a lot about InDesign now, he is still the acknowledged Quark expert in the field. His book goes into detail on every nook and cranny in the program, with copious, well-annotated screen shots throughout. (And contrary to another reviewers griping about figures seldom being on the same page where they're cited, that's totally wrong -- the opposite is true. Just look at the "look inside" excerpt that Amazon provides right here. I flipped through my copy and found that only once in a while are figures are on the next page. And in that case, big whoop! Don't know what's up with that guy.)
I like how he carries on a conversational tone even in the screen shots, like he's sitting next to you showing you stuff. For example on pg. 265 he goes through a series of 6 screen shots showing the same 2 blocks of text that were set on a master, modified on the doc page, then modified on the master and what happens to them subsequently on the doc page. How doc items can remain "partially" linked to their master page sources -- an item link vs. a content link -- are one of the most difficult things to teach let alone understand. But he takes his time with each shot, explaining what's happening and why (for #4 in the series of 6 shots: "Because I broke the item link for the second box, it doesn't get updated. The first box is updated because only the content link had been broken.")
I think if you ask any seasoned Quark user which book they *must* have, they'll tell you it's Blatner's. There's no "tutorials" as one reviewer mentioned, because the entire book is a tutorial! Egads! Every thing he explains is related to when/why you'd use a given feature for a particular purpose. Many screen shots are of real world projects. If you want a canned tutorial on how to create a fake newsletter or something. (...)
Also, note: Right after the book came out, Blatner notified the QuarkXPress listserv and anyone else he could reach that the publisher mistakenly included an old index with the book, but it was reprinted in late 2003 with the correct index.
I'm not sure how people in summer of 2004 are ending up with a bad index. I bought my copy from Amazon in April 2004 and the index is fine. (...)
How about teaching us how to use it in the Real World.......2004-09-30
There is one tutorial in the over 900 pages of text. Not good for beginners!!!!
