Book Description
For the past half century, filmmakers have been fascinated and challenged by the provocative subject matter of D. H. Lawrence's fiction as well as by the passionate eroticism of his cadenced, sensuous prose. This groundbreaking study focuses on three highly acclaimed film adaptations of Lawrence's novels and short stories-Anthony Pelissier's haunting The Rocking-Horse Winner (1949), Jerry Wald's pictorially stunning Sons and Lovers (1960), and Ken Russell's daring Women in Love (1970). The author pinpoints in depth and detail how each filmmaker attempted (not always successfully) to replicate visually and aurally those elements of prose that produce the quintessentially Lawrentian style. A book for both specialists and general readers, D. H. Lawrence on Screen demonstrates just how crucial the cinematic translation of a writer's distinctive style is to the excellence of a film adaptation of his or her work.
Customer Reviews:
An insightful book for literary film buffs.......1999-06-29
What goes in to translating true literary works into cinematic images? The author of this fine new book neither pretends to know what was on D.H. Lawrence's mind when he penned works that would become classics or what was on the minds of directors who crafted some of these work into films. Instead, she offers something more valuable: an almost scene-by-scene assessment of book/movie translation. She astutely looks at what was on the page of "Sons and Lovers," "The Rocking-Horse Winner" and "Women in Love" and the images that were use to convey (and sometimes) alter meanings on screen. It goes without saying that true Lawrence fans will find something interesting here. But this study might also rivet any serious, maturing film director or critic. It contributes meaningfully to our consideration of 20th-Century artistic vision and expression. And fortunately, the author writes clearly and with sharper opinion, than many academics. Dozens of black and white film stills also help us see she what she saw.

The Inside Scoop.......2006-06-11
Generally speaking, this is an interesting and handy book. It covers a wide range of material in a clear and concise form, and should be useful for both the beginning student as an intro and to the longtime student as a good reference and summary (as well as a guide to further research). I especially found refreshing Morton's approach of focusing on the thoughts and opinions of Japanese cultural critics on Japanese culture in general and cultural productions in particular (hence "the Insider's View"). A lot of this material has been relatively ignored in English-language studies, and, well, it shouldn't be.
Chapter 1 is a useful overview of various writers trying to define Japanese culture, from the philosophically sophisticated to the unabashedly essentialist "Nihonjinron" types (who are handled with admirable tact while not given a free ride)--this includes a good discussion of such figures as Nishida Kitaro, Watsuji Tetsuro, Kuki Shuzo, Maruyama Masao, Kawai Hayao, Umehara Takeshi, and many others. Chapter 2 focuses exclusively on the granddad of insider cultural formulations, the folklorist Yanagita Kunio. Chapter 3 then focuses on the very influential culture critic Yoshimoto Takaaki. Chapter 4 deals with literature, especially the novelists Mishima Yukio, Oe Kenzaburo, Murakami Haruki, Yoshimoto Banana, and many others along with extended discussions of poetry. Finally, chapter 5 deals with pop culture, i.e. television, cinema (especially Kurosawa Akira and Kitano "Beat" Takeshi), and manga comics (especially Tezuka Osamu and Uchida Shungicu).
The book's range is both its strength and weakness, though. It is comprehensive and informative, but sometimes it seems like the author is trying to fit way too much material into too short a book. Thus a lot of the narrative seems overly bare and summarized in a rushed manner. Partly this is due to the annoying and deplorable lack of translations of works by important Japanese culture critics; we see this especially in the Yanagita and Yoshimoto chapters, where Morton has to pretty much give a play-by-play account of their arguments and critiques in their major works before then analyzing these. But the same quirk appears, only less pronounced, in the other chapters too (most of the novelists' works have been translated, after all). Despite my high regard for the book, I can't help the impression that either the author should have been just a bit more selective or enlarged the size of the book accordingly.
The word "modern" in the title is also a bit misleading if modern is taken in its usual sense as starting in 1868. With a few exceptions (mainly the philosophers in chapter 1 and the early works of Yanagita), the overwhelming bulk of the book is concerned with the years after 1945, what is usually termed "postwar" and "contemporary"--which is good, because this time period has been less fully explored than the "prewar" modern. Indeed, the author covers a lot of unexplored territory in this study and takes an interesting, unusual, and compelling tack in doing so. Hopefully it will stir up interest and inspire further investigations along these lines.

Sandhills Boy: The Winding Trail of a Texas Writer
ASIN: 1585445274 |
Book Description
One of the best tie-down calf ropers ever to come out of South Texas, Juan Salinas grew up on a 15,000-acre ranch near Laredo, with the finest of horses to ride and hundreds of head of cattle to practice on. He roped in Texas rodeos large and small from the mid-1920s to 1935. From 1936 to 1946, he followed the national rodeo circuit, competing from Texas to New York's Madison Square Garden. At the time, few if any other Mexican Americans competed in rodeo, and Salinas drew a lot of attention.
Salinas also operated his family's Texas ranch, where he ran cattle and raised prize roping quarter horses. In this account of his life and career, Salinas's nephew, Ricardo Palacios, recounts the many tales his uncle told him--tales of friendship with Gene Autry, going to Sally Rand's wedding reception, riding on the Rodeo Train, and sponsoring seven-time world champion tie-down calf roper Toots Mansfield. He also narrates life on the range, with his uncle riding across a pasture at full speed, gingerly holding the reins and a thirty-five foot coil of rope in his left hand while swinging the roping loop overhead with his right hand as he chased a three-hundred-pound calf for the throw.
The story of Juan Salinas is also the story of the people of Mexican origin who live on the ranches of the South Texas brush country. Strong, rugged, independent, and hard-working, they knew social and economic success that has all too seldom been chronicled.
Tío Juan was the family cowboy, the hero, the rodeo star, and Palacios tells his uncle's story with warmth and admiration. In 1991 Salinas was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. He was also named Rancher of the Year by Laredo's Borderfest and won the Ranching Heritage Award given by the King Ranch and Texas A&M-Kingsville. In 1993, he was inducted into the LULAC International Sports Hall of Fame. These were, Palacios writes, "fitting tributes to a champion and fine additions to his collection of trophy roping saddles, silver trophies, and champion's buckles."
Customer Reviews:
Good Read On an Interesting Cowboy.......2007-05-16
Juan Salinas is not one of the better known cowboys in the history of rodeo, but he should be. He was and is a legend in South Texas. His great-nephew, Ricardo Palacios, does a good job of telling the Salinas story, although at times he races through his uncle's life. But it is also hard to cram 90 years of living into 200 pages.
The book offers a good overview of the world of rodeo back in the 1930s, but the book would be a better read for rodeo fans if more detail could have been given to the stories regarding Salinas' exploits in the rodeo arena. Salinas was one of the greats during his era, but was best known as a horseman and roping horse trainer. This would have been an interesting area to explore. Also Toots Mansfield was one of the all-time great calf ropers and was a close friend and traveling partner with Salinas. I would have enjoyed more information about this relationship.
The book also offers a glimpse into the Hispanic culture on the Texas border and these stories play a bigger part in the book that Salinas' exploits in rodeo. At time it seems there is too much effort to include every name that Salinas ever encountered or dealt with, but still some interesting tidbits.
Palacios deserves credit for making the effort to preserve his uncle's legacy and stories. Salinas was a great role model and hopefully readers will find inspiration in his story.

I loved Calf Roping and this book! I love Calf Roping alot!
I am probably a traveller of this book and it is in my heart & my blood.
I would love to do calf roping everywhere at a rodeo including The Calgary Stampede, Aspen Colorado, Montana, Texas, Wyoming, Nevada in Las, Vegas & The Kissimmee Rodeo in Florida.
The rodeo in Las, Vegas Nevada I would do it in is The NFR National Finals Rodeo at The Thomas & Mack Center and it is called The Wrangler NFR.
This book reminds me of You Can Teach Youself Mandolin book by Dix Bruce & other ones!
Someday when I be a cowboy I will rope holstien, angus, herefords & other kinds.
I love this book!

Roping.......2007-01-16
This was almost the same book as "Cowboy Roping and Rope Tricks" that I bought at the same time. It was written by the same author, had the same pictures and the same information.
Also, this book was sent to me defective. It had half the pages inserted in the book upside down and backwards.
I had difficulty returning it to Amazon postage free because, apparently,
No one at Amazon looked into the book to see it was defective.

Trick roping.......2007-01-16
This was a tiny vest pocket book and a condensed version of "Roping", and
"Cowboy Roping and Rope Tricks" written by Chester Beyers. The book was smaller than a playing card and didn't have much information. Of the three books "Cowboy Roping and Rope Tricks" is the best value.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.......2007-05-13
I found this book very helpful, easy to follow and not compicated in their directions. I would highly recommend this book for the novice or those that have extended experience with the Mac or Office and the price is a bargain.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac--a Must Buy.......2006-11-10
Even though on-line help (prevalent in most computer applications today) has its advantages, it is good to know that there is help in a book format that is much more detailed, well-organized, and better illustrated. It is rare that I encounter a problem with Microsoft Word that is not addressed in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.
A Very Nice Approach.......2004-09-10
The In a Snap books do not presume that you are a Dummy or an Idiot. They presume that you are a smart person, not afraid of computers, but that you need to learn how to use something new, like a piece of software on your computer. Further they assume that you want to get started without having to pour through all the 1500 pages or so in the guru level book. This book takes the Office 2004 software package for the Mac computer and gives it the In a Snap approach.
In evaluating books on Office, I always look first to see if they discuss Pivot Tables in the section on Excel. A surprising number of books don't, or give them very short treatment. In this book the index sends you to page 263, that puts you right in the middle of a discussion on pivot tables. Flipping back a page or three gets you to a section called Find Relationships Between Data. What an excellent idea, that's what a pivot table really is, but doesn't have the problem of the dumb name Pivot Table. The discussion is as good as I've seen anywhere in explaining what you can use them for.
The next thing I found was inside the front cover where they have a "Contents at a Glance." This sends you to, not the page number - that's the function of the index, but to a section identified by its own numbering system. Really a handy way to get where you want to jump in to solve the problem you're having at the moment.
