Book Description
For 34-year-old Eve Weston, life couldn't get much bleaker. Her con artist father recently committed suicide and her younger brother Terry was sent to jail. Then she lost her job too, because a close friendship with married solicitor Henry Baxter was misconstrued as an affair. Having temporarily moved away from London, she's now living in her father's old flat in one of the shabbier parts of Norwich.
On a visit to see Terry, Eve is shocked to find him battered and bruised. He refuses to tell her who has done it or why. Eve begins to have serious fears that her brother won't survive his sentence, and in desperation she turns to another prisoner, a dangerous-seeming individual called Martin Cavelli. They make a secret pact: if Cavelli protects Terry then she will pay whatever it costs.

All The Action You Could Want!!.......2007-03-26
Roberta Kray was born in the seaside resort of Southport in 1959. She worked in publishing and media research in London for 15 years. In 1996 she met Reggie Kray and they married the following year. She currently lives in Norfolk and she has a previous best selling novel `The debt.'
Eve is the daughter of a conman, the recently deceased Alexander Weston. 34-year-old Eve has been around her father long enough to know a good deal when she sees one and the one she is thinking of is not even close. With her brother being worked over in jail she has little option. She has got to organise some protection for him, otherwise he is going to end up on a slab.
The powerful con Cavelli seems to be the answer to her prayers, but can he be trusted and more importantly what price is he going to exact? She knows that she may be biting off more than she can chew with this one.
A forced entry followed by a vicious assault soon makes Eve question her choice. Cavelli is leading her straight down the path to oblivion. Is she holding hands with the devil himself . . .

this book will pass your time while allowing you to gaze into the pit of dimentia. roy's adherence to his own brutal codes and his colorful memories of the characters that made up london's miscreants. his life was hard, and his choices make that very clear. not to "pop" this up too much but if you enjoy the sopranos you'll probably love roy shaw -- prettyboy.
a great read.......2000-07-08
Roy Shaw is a great character, with an amazing strength. This is how to prepare for a life on the streets, i recomend this to any teenager with an appatite for success.
A Hard Life.......2000-01-22
I read this book in one sitting. It has a fascinatting account of all the trouble and strife Mr Shaw went through. A tale of overcomming the darkest mental and physical abuse of leading institutes , and of how he has made the transition from barenuckle boxer to successful businessman. Well worth the money and a great read

The Enforcer-Secrets of my life with the Krays.......2007-01-10
A very good back-ground work to the underworld in England in the 1960's, with particular reference to the "Firm"-the Kray brothers crime empire which was the dominant force in the London East end gangs of that era.
Recommended to anyone interested in the violent reality behind the almost mythical status accorded to the Kray's influence in the East End.

England's Original Gangsters.......2000-08-15
The Kray twins dominated organized crime in 1960's London. exceptionally cruel and vicious they lorded over an criminal empire the likes of which Britain has not seen before or since. The author, Charles Kray, is the older brother of the twins. Understandably his familial bias tends to paint a more warm and fuzzy Kray twins than more detached observers might offer, but it is nontheless a captivating read. Out of print book, try Amazon UK.

Book Description
The Krays were a product of their age, nurtured by a doting mother and created by their community, the East End of London. Their name alone conjures up images of power, violence, and greed—and even brother Charlie couldn't steer the twins Ron and Reg clear of murder mayhem as they killed their way to the top of the criminal tree. The three brothers are an indelible part of our history, whether we like it or not. From media-manipulation to control-freak paranoia, the Krays were masters of deception. This biography traces their history from childhood and early adolescence to manhood and death. It explores the brothers' fantasy lives, full as they were of mind games and false memories. Only now can the truth be revealed—without fear of intimidation, retribution, or revenge. The Krays are dead and buried, but the myth lives on.

Book Description
From the author of Stan and Ollie--a funny, fresh, and compelling look at Hollywood's Original King of Comedy
From his early aspirations to sing opera, to his time under the tutelage of D. W. Griffith, to the fortune and notoriety that his uncanny eye for talent deservedly brought him, Mack Sennett stood behind his belief in individuality and originality. Now, more than eighty years after Sennett rose to heights that epitomized the American dream, the acclaimed biographer of Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, and W. C. Fields offers a compelling account of comedy's transformation at the hands of a true master.
Regarded as the father of American slapstick, Sennett--iron-worker, boilermaker, actor, director, producer, writer, and creator of the infamous Keystone Kops--held audiences in thrall to a world where chaos was order and banana peels, car crashes, and leaps from tall buildings were a matter of course. As the cameras rolled and vaudeville gags morphed into celluloid wonders, the rising stars of Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, and Gloria Swanson were born. Behind it all was the "King of Comedy," governing from his office bathtub.
In this irresistible journey into early Hollywood at its peak, Simon Louvish crafts a fascinating portrait of the enigmatic entrepreneur. Through film scripts, telegrams, even liquor bills, Sennett's world is skillfully re-created, offering a rare and humorous glance into the infancy and innocence of moving pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Much better than reported........2005-07-17
This book is a lot better than the previous reviewers would have me believe. Louvish had access to the Mack Sennett Papers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, something that previous writers like Walter Kerr and Kalton Lahue did not.
Of course, Sennett did not include his private papers in the collection so little is known of his private life--which he apparently kept private. Louvish posts hypotheses based on fact and states that these are Not Proven; he does NOT claim that Sennett was gay. Of course he is putting a modern gloss on the behaviour of people from nearly a century ago. People really did behave, and talk, differently then.
Some of his material, particularly new material about Mabel Normand, is saddening and worthy of note.
This is also the only book to tell the very moving story of Ben Turpin and his terminally ill wife, whom he supported until her death.
There are some erroneous statements in the book that could have been better edited; Chaplin toured the USA in a production called MUMMING BIRDS, not EARLY BIRDS; Buster Keaton was drafted in WWI, not enlisted; and Roscoe Arbuckle's THAT MINSTREL MAN was made for Keystone, not 'just as he was about to join Keystone.'
I do recommend that you consider this book. There is a lot of good material in it that is of interest to the silent historian.
And I've not read the word 'quoth' once.
A custard pie of a book with a few rocks in it.......2004-12-14
As a biographer, Simon Louvish is a great novelist. I mean, how else would you draw a conclusion that someone is gay because they never married and took care of their mother until they died? Of course (dopey me!)-they must be gay!
Horse puckey.
Louvish's main claim in this extremely derivative and clunky biography is that Mack Sennett was either closeted or a very quiet gay man. What is his proof? The answer is below:
Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Zero. Big bagel.
There is no proof given in this book for this hypothesis, and except for some veiled clues, there is nothing anecdotal, nothing supported by documents published or unpublished, and nothing that appears in some musty forgotten legal file. Louvish just throws this out there with nothing to back it up-the worst form of research and writing. For that alone, this book deserves to perpetually be in thrift store shelves and yard sales. Added to that, the things he does have correct have been presented in better books in better ways. Even Sennett's own autobiography (KING OF COMEDY) for all its faults of accuracy and syntax does a better job than this thing, and you can get more entertainment (and primary sources) from Gene Fowler's FATHER GOOSE than this claptrap.
Check out Kalton C. LaHue's KOPS AND KUSTARDS, Walter Kerr's THE SILENT CLOWNS and any books by Kevin Brownlow or William K. Everson and you will get better writing and more facts in one paragraph than you get in this entire tome.
Forget it. Feh.
For those interested in comedy film history.......2004-04-15
As comedy is central to the development of cinema, a book on Mack Sennett is essential. Sennett was a movie pioneer who produced some of the earliest slapstick comedies. The films spawned such important comedians as Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle, Mabel Normand, and Harry Langdon. They were also an early, albeit comparatively brief, training ground for the likes of Harold Lloyd and Charley Chase. Director Frank Capra enjoyed some of his early success writing and co-writing Sennett productions. Louvish examines Sennett the man and tells the story of Mack's work from his early days with D.W. Griffith to his own productions beginning in the early teens and lasting into the 1930s and the talking picture revolution. Even for comedy film buffs who have read a great deal about this genre, Louvish offers a lot of interesting information that does not appear in other sources. There have been few truly good books on Mack Sennett and his work. This one is quite good. Recommended.
Disappointing Book on a Fascinating Subject.......2004-04-03
I'm a big fan of not only silent films in general but silent comedy in particular, so you would think that I'd be the natural audience for Simon Louvish's new book on Mack Sennett, D.W. Griffith's protégé and the man behind the Keystone Studio, which produced (or at least discovered) such comic geniuses as Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe Arbuckle. Well, you'd be right: I am the natural audience for "Keystone: The Life and Clowns of Mack Sennett." So why was I so disappointed?
It has some new information on the life of the Canadian-born producer and his life and times, but the book is so vilely written that I found it a chore to read. It almost feels like Louvish, who wrote a far better book on the Marx Brothers and other books on famous comedians that I have not read, fell under the stylistic influence of Gene Fowler, a previous Sennett biographer and the maudlin biographer of John Barrymore, whose prose style is replete with every sappy literary cliché known to man (memorably described by Edmund Wilson: "...the style couldn't be more journalistic in a flowery, old-fashioned way... [it] has no structure and no harmonics. It is something that is exhaled like breath or exuded like perspiration."). If you doubt my word and decide to read the book anyway, try and count the number of times Louvish uses the archaic word "quoth" in a sentence.
So I'm torn about this book. There simply aren't enough good books about this period, and there is some new information to be gleaned from Louvish's pages (although I found myself disagreeing with some, but not all, of his conclusions). But its wretched prose style, if you have any feeling at all for the English language, will set your teeth on edge. You might not care if you're a real fan of early silent comedy, and if that's the case go ahead and read it. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Customer Reviews:
This is a practical book, not for beginers.......2007-09-15
This is a very good book to get practical skills in PHP development with MySQL appliances. But before buying it, it is important to understand that this book is not for beginers, this book assumes that the reader have a least basic knowledge of both tools.
For very dummies.......2007-03-16
if you need a first impression, just found out that computers exist, if you think PHP stands for a new boygroup, then this is the book for you.
NO CD.......2006-03-29
I downloaded it, but not could not find the accompanying cd. can anyone post a link to it!
Recommended for Advanced - Beginners.......2005-10-16
This book is challenging and informative. Some basic knowledge of PHP MySQL is required before beginning this book.
Several Common Apps Working and Described.......2005-08-19
There are a handfull of applications that every web designer sooner or later has to implement. Of course a skilled web programmer can do any of these applications. All it takes is time, thinking about the problem, writing, debugging, checking out, and making the customer (who may be the programmer him/her self) happy.
Today there are several scritping languages that can be used to tie the web site together with a database for storing the data. One set of software that you can use is PHP and MySQL. Both of these are highly advanced products (often combined with Linux and the Apache web server for a high performance web server with no software cost). You might use these to write the applications you need.
But when we are talking about common applications, these have been done over and over. In this book, six applications are included, working and ready for you to install. Once you get them operational, you can easily modify them to suit your particular needs. The code for the application is given, both printed in the book and included on the CD that comes with the book. The code is then carefully explained both conceptually as to what the app does, and line by line so you know what's going on and modify it as needed.
The application included are:
two login apps
shopping cart
content management system (allows users to publish documents on your system)
Online bulletin board.
The book is intended to be self standing, but if you know nothing about PHP or MySQL you might look for the same authors book PHP & MySQL for Dummies.
