Book Description
Céline Dion has long been one of the world's most admired performers. Her unique blend of brilliant talent and an unstinting willingness to share her life has defined her career in the public eye. With new interviews and special memorabilia, Céline Dion: For Keeps will invite her fans to get to know the professional and personal parts of her life as never before.
Céline Dion is a very special collection: a combination of memoir, personal scrapbook, and looking glass into one of the world's most admired lives. Drawing heavily from Céline's personal archives and those of her husband and longtime manager, René Angelil, this book focuses on the key elements of her life, including her family, career, inspirations, courtship and marriage to René, show business hiatus, son René-Charles, and plans for the future-everything that makes her who she is.
Produced in the successful and stylish format of last year's The Sinatra Treasures, each of Céline Dion's chapters will include removable facsimiles of favorite mementos, stored in vellum envelopes. Everything from Céline and René's love notes and family photos to special letters and her wedding program can be examined and admired in detail. This is a remarkable opportunity to share in the unique and vital life and career of Céline Dion.

Worst Book on the planet...........2007-09-19
This is really the most mush that I have ever read. Dion's life as told here is almost like reading something from ONE LIFE TO LIVE, If it is not mush, then it is just plain dull, and would put anyone to sleep.
She shines in this awesome book.......2006-12-21
This book of hers shines really brightly & is a must buy book one of the best of 2006 in the top 5. George
Every artist should have a book like this!.......2006-11-10
This amazing book offers a detailed overview of Celine's life in the spot lights. It has removable documents and photos from celine's personal archives.
The great thing is that it seems like a very honest book, even discussing her insecurities and the difficult times in her personal and professional life.
The book is quite big and heavy, so not for traveling, but ideal for reading on a lazy sunday afternoon.
Absolutely recomended for everyone who is interested in Celine's music and her life.
Best book written about a celbrity.......2006-07-18
This book has everything, huge pictures, an insightful history of Celine Dion, and well, some "memorable" memorabilia from her.
It is a once in a lifetime book and anyone who loves Ceeline and doesn't have it should get it now.
Absolutely amazing, from any point of view.
I was looking forward to this book for so long!.......2006-03-05
It's really a wonderful book with multiple and rare pictures
I love it very much!^_^

A Novel, not a Travel Guide.......2000-04-26
This work of imaginative fiction is the closest John Hawkes ever came to writing an autobiography. His own sensibility informs the character of Sunny; his memories of Uncle Jake are drawn from memories of his own father. The Alaska in the novel is not the everyday cruise ship destination we see in brochures; it's a mysterious childhood world refracted through Hawkes'sensuous prose.
An Affront to Intelligent Readers.......1999-12-04
If you want to read a book about Alaska, this is not one to consider! I was amazed that such a reputable writer would publish a story that repeatedly betrays complete ignorance of Alaskan geography, culture, and history. Imagine reading a book written about your home state by someone who seems never to have looked at a map of it, much less visited it or made the least effort to learn its history. I was appalled! If I could have rated this one with negative stars, I would have.
A Wonderful book!.......1999-05-12
I can't believe I am the first one to review this book! I read it last year for a college literature class and found it absolutely captivating. The imagery of Alaska is perfect, but the best part is the outstanding characterization of Sunny and her father, Uncle Jake. It captures so poigantly the complexities of their relationship--the good points and the bad points. It also, without coming right out and saying it, explains both Sunny's and Uncle Jake's courses of action. I felt bad for Uncle Jake, who ultimately couldn't live up to his (and his perceptions of others') expectations for himself, but worse for Sunny who was left to deal with the consequences of her father's actions. And yet I did not, by any means, find this book to be depressing. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, male or female.

Not for survivalists.......2005-11-19
This book is written by a professional book writer, not a tanner. He seems to be getting most of his information from hide tanning kits and some tanning he has done himself. Since the book has no bibliography or footnotes, it is hard to say where he gets his information. He does refer to a Bruce Rittel of 'Rittel's Chrome Tan Products' a few times, as if having consulted with him.. He doesn't appear to have worked with or interviewed any professional or advanced amateur tanners along the way while writing this book.
There are several pictures in the book of someone skinning, fleshing and working with hides. I don't know if this is the author or not. It could be more than one person as the face is usually not visible. From the text, the author describes his working with hides, but I do not get the impression that his work with hides is extensive.
He refers to the 'Native American' several times, as if to suggest that they were some sort of authority on hide tanning. This would be absurd because when the English landed at Jamestown in 1607, they were much more advanced than the 'Native American' in tanning hides. The only method that he connects to the 'Native American' is the buck skin making process that he shows.
He gives some good drawings and pictures of how to make some of the tools needed for skinning, fleshing, stretching and so forth. This is perhaps the most instructive part of the book. There are also pretty detailed drawings and explanation of how to skin animals. There are some pictures that look rather gruesome. (Well, if you can't stand to look at the pictures, you had best forget about tanning hides anyway.)
He makes an attempt to explain some of the chemistry, but it is weak. I would have preferred a more in-depth discussion of the chemistry involved. There seems to be some gaps and some puzzling things. He tells you to get ph paper testing strips, but doesn't give details on what they are, how to use them, or what 'ph' means. A salinometer is also necessary, he says. So where did the 'Native American' get his salinometer and his 'ph' paper strips from? And how did the 'Native American' use them? The title 'Ultimate' is a bit presumptuous.
He discusses 'bark tanning' a bit, but more so it seems to discourage the practice rather than to describe how to do it. He ultimately has you grinding the bark through a coffee mill. (I guess the 'Native Americans' didn't have leaf shredders.)
He does give some formulas for mixing your own tanning chemicals. I think it might be hard to buy some of those chemicals, especially with all the regulations these days. But it is good information to have.
The only method he gives in the book that might not require you to run to the store or the mailbox, is the 'brain tanning' method, or making 'buckskins'. The same method is described in the Foxfire 3 book. Foxfire describes making different furs and skins while this book only discusses deer skin. Foxfire has more pictures, also, and doesn't mention 'native americans'. (Foxfire 3 was evidently written before Political Correctness had permeated everything.)
I was hoping for a book that would tell me how to tan leather without the chemical companies, and Tandy, Cabella's, and Rittel getting involved. More self sufficient, in other words. This book is pretty much a disappointment in that area.
This book lacks the heart and soul of a craftsman. It is a lot of technical information. But I don't feel inspired to go out and tan a hide, and I don't feel that I have been given enough knowledge to feel confident that I could tan a hide if I wanted to.
Book Description
Press covergae of the sex trade in Thailand routinely consists of ill-informed, moralising and sensationalist denunciations of the industry. Through the words of sex workers and their clients, acclaimed journalist Jeremy Seabrook reconsiders the popular conception of the sex industry and explores the complex relationship between sex and tourism. In doing so he presents an objective, unmoralizing, and sensitive view of the industry. Travels in the Skin Trade is now reissued with a new Preface.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2005-01-13
This is an excellent book and as real as it gets. Highly recommended. I have read the book several times. It really helps you understand why so many predatory low lives wind up in Thailand chasing prostitutes. It really is very interesting.
Not much new here.......2001-12-17
This volume is interchangeable with any number of of other sociological tomes. The author tries to depict a cross section of aging customers, some human slaves working in debt bondage after being sold (often by their parents) to a brothel.some of the helping organizations-but it doesn't hold together very well as a book unless you have been living on another planet of late. The inclusion of sex in the title is somewhat misleading as this could just as easily be about poor Pakistanis in slavery to brick kilns.
this book is good.......2001-04-14
this book is very informative and blows the lid off the illusion of paradise that thailand is perceived by many to be. the real truth of the relationships between the prostitutes and the "farangs" is exposed in detail. if you want to know why men seek out these prostitutes, how long the relationships last, why the prostitutes treat the johns as they do, and if you want to understand the miscommunication and false feelings that go on between john and prostitute, this is the book to read. the harsh reality of thailand is exposed.
A sensitive, revealing look at the seamier side of tourism.......1998-02-23
Studs Terkel-style, Seabrook presents interviews, recorded and transcribed, with both sex workers and their mostly male clients in Bangkok, Thailand. This powerful volume peruses the commodification of sexuality, the sex trade, through the eyes and voices of the men who tramp the sex markets--the bars and brothels--and the women, men and children who service them. Also, addressed are a variety of related topics, including the global economy and developing countries, sociocultural costs of economic development, organized sex tours and agencies, human rights, children's rights, and HIV / AIDS. A highly readable travelogue, recommended for tourists, travel agents, and anyone interested in this controversial and sordid subject.
Customer Reviews:
Good coverage of interesting topic.......2000-08-18
Too much has been made of Lewis & Clark. The real exploration of America's West Coast and the real contribution to American culture was that of a select group of Boston traders who departed poor their New England homes, turned round the Cape, and up to the Pacific Northwest, there trading iron and wool for otter skins, the most dense and precious of all mammal pelts and one of two items alone that the Chinese would deign to purchase from Americans.
Gibson tells the stories of these men, the men who established profitable trade for America, who brought hard currency into a broken economy, who set the stage for the American heritage of exploration cum capitalism that we see today in Silicon Valley.
I don't believe it is a coincidence that the shares held by the investors (half), captain (tenth), supercargo (seven percent), and crew (33 percent, total) mirrors that of technology companies today.

Skin Trade
Ann DuCille
Manufacturer: Harvard University Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0674810848 |
Book Description
How does the notion of colorblind equality fit with the social and economic realities of black Americans? Challenging the increasingly popular argument that blacks should settle down, stop whining, and get jobs, Skin Trade insists that racism remains America's premier national story and its grossest national product. From Aunt Jemima Pancakes to ethnic Barbie dolls, corporate America peddles racial and gender stereotypes, packaging and selling them to us as breakfast food or toys for our kids.
Moving from the realm of child's play through the academy and the justice system, Ann duCille draws on icons of popular culture to demonstrate that it isn't just race and gender that matter in America but race and gender as reducible to skin color, body structure, and other visible signs of difference. She reveals that Mattel, Inc., uses stereotypes of gender, race, and cultural difference to mark--and market--its Barbie dolls as female, white, black, Asian, and Hispanic. The popularity of these dolls suggests the degree to which we have internalized dominant definitions of self and other.
In a similar move, Skin Trade interrogates the popular discourse surrounding the trial of O. J. Simpson, arguing that much of the mainstream coverage of the case was a racially coded message equally dependent on stereotypes. Focusing on Newsweek and Time in particular, duCille shows how the former All-American was depicted as un-American. She explores other collusions and collisions among race, gender, and capital as well. Especially concerned with superficial distinctions perpetuated within the academic community, the author argues that the academy indulges in its own skin trade in which both race and gender are hot properties.
By turns biting, humorous, and hopeful, Skin Trade is always riveting, full of strange connections and unexpected insights.

passivity?.......2001-02-27
A wonderful piece of writing. Samual Bennett, the main character, is a young man who attempts to let his life's course be dictated only by external influences. His move to London is preceded by the destruction of his parent's precious mementoes, thereby ensuring that he can never return home. The book, cut short by the death of Thomas, follows the youth on his adventure in passivity with sparkling prose and incredible characters. Unfortunately we can only speculate on the final outcome.
altered landscapes..........2000-04-15
wow... not what i expected.
while the plot itself does not have time to become remarkable, the characters are animated enough to compensate. the whole thing seemed to be a cartoonish farce; i could not help thinking of old beatles movies and episodes of scooby doo (?)
this appears to have been written from an altered perspective (or was intended to convey one) as characters shift in and out of the story's focus in a stalled, haphazard way such that each one is grooving to his own inner music. the individuality and breadth of creativity displayed here by thomas and his unique assembly of characters is amazing considering the book's platry 60 pages.
highly recommeded.
leaving your hometown as an inner adventure.......1998-07-28
A fine beginning: The main character of this never completed novel, due to the early death of Dylan Thomas, is Samuel Bennet. He grows up in a small town and feels very bored in this area. So, when he's twenty, he decides to go to London, where he expects to find life more interesting. This is how the story starts and the reader is probably curious to learn more of all the detailed adventures a young man can get into. But what Thomas describes is not only what Samuel encounters, he also gives a unique example of what a person may feel and think like in such a situation. With this topic, Thomas has to stand a comparism with authors like Joyce (A portrait of an artist as young man) or Wilde (The picture of Dorian Gray)and he does it quite well. To lead the reader into Samuel's world he clinks out from reality and tells some passages in a very surrealistic way. Not only this is a proof of quality, but Thomas builds up a unity to the outer world with some accurate themes wh! ich he positions with an twinkle in the eye in the story. If one thinks of the importance of the topics he develops during the story, there is hard to find a comparable piece in world literature, which is written in such a structured an allthough amusing way. The major topics are for example: Leaving home and going to the big town, getting rid of your childhood's place and planning your own future; to position oneself in the social classes; and how to manage with problems of your own childhood and where it may end when you just escape from them. In the whole I would say this is a book which has never got the reputation it may deserves, but the author has probably had too much success with other pieces within his lifetime, that this book has been a little out of the spotlight.
Dyaln Thomas at his best.......1996-08-03
Dyaln Thomas writes this amusing tale of a young man who destroys his parent's house and then runs away to London. He meets some interesting characters and has a crazy adventure while he's there. However, Thomas never completed it, but we're lucky we have the little bit that he wrote

Book Description
"This book will be a supportive resource to help you know how to use the tools and features Microsoft shipped, but even better, Williams and Walla guide you through enough of the product internals to approach administration more strategically."
From the Foreword by Brian Valentine, Senior Vice President, Windows Division, Microsoft Corporation
Windows Server 2003, the successor to Windows 2000 and Windows NT, is designed to accommodate the seamless exchange of information through Web services. It delivers the increased flexibility and power needed to administer networks as global entities, but its enhanced management tools and security features present as many challenges as opportunities. The Ultimate Windows Server 2003 System Administrator's Guide will help readers negotiate these challenges and exploit the opportunities.
Robert Williams and Mark Walla take readers from an understanding of basic concepts to the application of advanced functions. This comprehensive book begins with the fundamentals of Windows 2000 system administration and applies them to Windows Server 2003. The book then details the planning, deployment, administration, and management of a Windows Server system, and follows up with complete coverage of advanced tools and theory. This book concludes with a quick reference to the most important Windows .NET commands and utilities.
Key topics include:
Windows Server 2003 features, structure, planning, and installation
Migration from Windows NT and Windows 2000
Microsoft Management Console
Active Directory management and use
User management
Group Policy
Security, including IP security
Printer and file services and networking basics
Virtual private networks
Disk and backup management and disaster recovery
Terminal and Internet Information Services
Cluster and indexing services, and message queuing
System Management Server
Windows 2000 administration support
In this book, system administrators and other IT professionals will find the essential information needed to succeed in the administration of the Windows .NET and Windows 2000 Server families.
Customer Reviews:
Verbose filler.......2006-03-21
This book reads like a speech by a stuffed shirt: lots of words - very little actual content. There are numerous errors that show that this edition is a quick rehash of their 2000 edition (Windows 2000 listed where you would expect Windows 2003).
Win Svr Adm Guide 2003 - mrp.......2006-02-27
I bought the book as a reference book and it has been able to provide me with easy to find and accurate answers each time I had to refer to it
Start to Finish and Beyond.......2005-08-30
Often I pick up an "administrator's guide" and find myself staring at 300 pages of screenshots explaining how to insert the CD-ROM for installation and resize the task bar for better time/date viewing, written by someone who appears to be learning the topic while writing the text. Rarely do I encounter a resource such as this book that not only intelligently covers the basics but successfully tackles advanced topics as well, leaving the reader's intelligence un-insulted and providing a reference guide that will serve you well long after your initial read.
The foundational information is here, from planning out the network on paper to installing and configuring the basic domain services. The deployment information is here, from server deployment to remote OS installations. General administration, including AD design, IP addressing, DNS, replication, user and group management, and group policies are all thoroughly discussed. More complex systems, such as VPN, security certificates, disaster recovery, terminal services, and indexing are also presented with just as much detail and knowledge as all other topics. Beyond what you would otherwise expect from this style of book are advanced topics that are typically not covered and therefore overlooked by many administrators. Such things as extending the AD schema, real-world security issues and solutions, clustering services, message queuing services, and a very extensive commands and utilities section are demystified, easily adding them to your skill list and making them a real possibility for inclusion in your environment.
The title also provides an introduction to Microsoft SMS, Microsoft MOM, and the Windows Script Host (WSH). These sections are there to inform you of their role within a network, not to provide a learning guide or reference for the technologies.
Those that have never administered a network before in their life, and are looking to this title as a student textbook should look elsewhere. Time is not spent covering the rudimentary basics that qualified IT professionals already have. Although a Windows background is very helpful, administrators of non-Windows networks looking to crossover will find this title inclusive of the background information they need to understand the Windows environment and to apply their current network administration knowledge. Every intrinsic Windows 2003 topic, from planning and deployment to management of core services, are covered in a logical and educated manner, providing you the information quickly and efficiently. Sections and appendices are well labeled and organized to make this not only an educational guide, but a desktop reference that will last you thru the life of the product. This is a must have for Windows 2003 administrators.
full of fillers.......2005-07-12
I often choose books on Amazon based on the reviews I read here. In most cases, I get it right. However, I think I got it wrong this time.
I still do not understand who would give this book 5 stars. Did these reviewers actually use this book? Did they try to perform simple networking tasks using this book as a reference? Did they look for guidance when performing tasks that were familiar in Windows 2000 but done differently in Windows 2003? I did, and I was disappointed.
This book is full of a rehash of the online documentation. In fact, in some cases, it is scantier than the freely available documentation. You will be forced to read through reams of boring pages just to get to the stuff the authors really have to say.
If you want lectures about the history of Windows servers and the active directory, this is your book. But if you need a solid book that can help you answer those quirky networking questions then you'll have to look elsewhere. A book on networking administration ought to be task oriented. It should also have tons of troubleshooting tips. This one is full of fillers and useless information.
I rarely give negative reviews, but this book is an utter disappointment. I really regret buying it.
TREMENDOUS !!! Solid On ALL Fronts.......2003-12-07
I have never written a book review before but I am extremely impressed by The Ultimate Windows Server 2003 System Administrator's Guide. It is written with authority yet very easy to understand. It begins with a forward by the Microsoft executive in charge of Windows ... that alone is a solid endorsement. However, the real proof came when I needed to understand otherwise foreign concepts like Active Directory and the various security technologies. The book gave me the theory and then provided very human instructions on how to pull these concepts together in the real world. I have six other Windows Server 2003 including the sub-standard Manasi book that has now become a door stop. The "Ultimate ... Guide" is always at my finger tips unless of course a co-worker borrows it.
