Mary Plummer Starts the Soundtrack Pro Vehicle.......2007-03-26
Think of this book as driving instruction. Mary Plummer starts the car and now, you get to do the driving. The easy to follow comprehesive lessons in this book are more than enough to get you through the application. And once you have learned to operate the essentials, the rest of the drive is up to you. Turn left, turn right, speed up slow down, well, you get the picture. If you are the imaginative sort, this application can do things to enhance any of your video projects. This program even works for the rythmically challenged!
Bear in mind though, Mary's book is not intended to take you into the depths of award-winning audio post-production. If thats what you're looking for you probably need to seek an internship or hang around your local Guitar Centar. But if you want to learn how to be creative enough with Soundtrack Pro to keep your video viewing audience on the entertainment edge then this well-written book is a must.
I have used Soundtrack to score TV broadcast commercial IDs. Local commercials and proms are next. Shhhh! No one knows except me. Being paid for simply playing around. For more hot and interesting loops, see Douglas Spotted Eagle's book Using Soundtrack: Produce Original Music for Video, DVD, and Multimedia.
A Good Primer, in some respects.......2007-03-24
A word to those who are looking for a comprehensive reference and how-to book for Soundtrack Pro: this is not that book, nor is it intended to be. Instead, this book is a lesson-based primer that quickly takes you through many common tasks that anyone who is starting out in the world of audio Post-production will need to know at some point. The operative word being "quickly". This is NOT an in-depth look at Soundtrack Pro's most important functions, in terms of what they do, how they work and when you want to use one type of functionality over another.
Also, since the one person who took the time to write a real review mentioned it, if you're thinking about owning Soundtrack Pro and looking to see what kind of literature is available first, don't make the mistake of thinking STP is the "Photoshop of audio post-production." It's not, though it shares some common points with the progams that are. If you want the whole ball of wax, Logic Pro or Digital Performer from Motu are the tools you'll want to look at. Like Photoshop, they can perform a huge number of audio post-production and recording taks, but they're also hugely complex. Just depends on what your needs are and how much time you're able to dedicate to learning the toolset.
Overall this book is helpful in understanding how the Soundtrack Pro interface is laid out, and where the basic functional components are located and what they do. However, it's not the kind of book where you can look up a single important topic like "Voiceovers" or "eliminating ambient noise" and find 15 pages throughout the book on ways to accomplish those tasks. IOW, this isn't a reference work you set on your desk and find lots of answers as you go through the program trying to learn new things.
It's more like a 2 day class that covers a variety of basic lessons, compressed into a book.
Brand New + Fast Shipping.......2007-03-10
It was delivered right on time and in brand new condition like advertised.
Apple Pro Training Series: Soundtrack Pro (Apple Pro Training).......2007-01-05
Great Book -- has helped me a lot to understad sound editing.
The Soundtrack Pro Book.......2006-02-13
Mary Plummer, whose fun book on Apple Soundtrack helped walk users through the features of what was once a relatively limited utility, has upgraded the curriculum for the revamped Soundtrack Pro, a tool some have called "the Photoshop of audio". Now, as a Photoshop user myself, I wouldn't say Soundtrack has quite the depth to yet make that claim ... however, Apple has indeed rebuilt it from the ground up into what is leaps and bounds beyond the clip/loop manager it had been before. And Ms. Plummer, who has seen it grow each step of the way, has penned the best (if not only, at this time) source with which to learn its awesome capabilities.
After a quick first chapter on getting familiar with the interface (a working knowledge of Mac OS-X is essential), the reader gets up and running with projects involving sound design for a video trailer and a suspense scene, performing in depth waveform surgery (one of the key new features of Soundtrack Pro), editing audio tracks, recording and mixing audio, performing refinements and adding effects to a multi-track recording, and finally integrating it with the other tools of Final Cut Studio. That covered all the bases with this user and, as with her previous volume, kept it fun and inspired creative experimentation. It is always refreshing to learn from an author who is both an expert and an artist herself.
If you have been working with Apple's Pro Apps for any amount of time, learning Soundtrack Pro on your own isn't really rocket science, and if you just use it for loops and sound design with Final Cut Pro/Express you probably don't even need this book. But it is capable of a lot more on its own, and if you find yourself wanting to get deeper into its uses and exploit Soundtrack Pro for all it's worth, you'll find this Apple Pro Training title a well-written, invaluable, enjoyable and fast-moving route to audio enlightenment.
Thanks again Mary!

Printout of the PDFs included with FCP.......2006-04-23
I guess I missed in the online description that this book is actually a printout of the PDF tutorials already included with FCP Studio. Wish I knew before buying. Could be a good reference for those who don't like reading the PDF's and switching back and forth between programs.
For $22 I guess I'll make the best of it.
Great for beginners........2005-10-20
The book arived earlier for about 10 days, got it today, opened it and I must say it's very well written with details for every begginer with Final Cut Studio.
The 2 DVDs that include have alot of tutorials and documentation that covers the book.
I recommend it to every beginner, the only thing that makes me feel not so proud is that, the book itself isn't contained on a .PDF file in case you want to have it on the PowerBook for example with you, without the need to carry the book itself with you.

Customer Reviews:
Already Outdated But Still Useful.......2004-04-16
Apple's Soundtrack is not so much a music creation program as it is more of an audio clip manager, to be used with other programs. Originally packaged with Final Cut Pro, it has been released as a standalone tool to provide background music and sync sound in tandem with other media applications for video or web. In that sense, it is ideal for the non-musician or media artist looking to enhance projects with audio "clip art".
As is often the case, the in-box guided tour touches on the basics but doesn't cover most of this seemingly basic program's capabilities. Mary Plummer's comprehensive tutorial is a must-have for the user who desires to learn every feature of Soundtrack; it covers the basics of arranging and editing loops and one-shots on the timeline, synching and modifying projects for video, offers insights for adding special touches as well as tips for such mundane matters as managing files and media paths, and pretty much covers everything the program was designed to do ..... which is as much as you can expect from the only teaching aid available for Soundtrack at this time.
Note: Apple has updated their software since this publication, and the book refers to features that no longer exist, ie: no more red duration bar. There are also added features, such as midi synching, that are not covered ...... as a standalone, Soundtrack is obviously a work in progress. If I had already been using an audio production tool such as Logic or Cubase, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it. Fortunately, Ms. Plummer's softcover classroom (which features generous practice files on the enclosed DVDrom) covers enough of this otherwise basic application to make it a genuinely helpful tool, for non-musicians and composer-arrangers alike, who need to bash out and sync up scores on the spot. One of the better written Pro Training titles (no noticeable proofing errors this time!), this book will help the reader make the best use of Soundtrack in nine simple lessons.
All software should be this simple and fun to learn, but since it isn't, learning Soundtrack with the help of Ms. Plummer's guide makes for a nice break from the rest of them.
A must buy.......2004-04-08
Mary Plummer achieves something that few instruction manuals do. She writes a book that not only gives you great understanding of the application, she teaches you the basics of creating good-sounding music. Oh, and she does all this with a writing style that flows and entertains. Now that's a hat trick! (google hockey if you don't get this.)
Her bio indicates she is a screenwriter, composer, musician...and an Apple Certified Trainer. She brings all of these qualities together to create a great book.
I have read hundreds of training manuals, even wrote one...and this is by far one of the best.
Even if you think you know the application, Mary provides insight and techniques that can notch up your compositions and make this application sing.
By all means, buy this book.

Book Description
From the immediate success of George Du Maurier's 1894 book Trilby came a transatlantic sensation of all things Trilby- sausages, hats, candies, even a town in Florida. Trilby has faded now, leaving behind in its wake pervasive lingering traces of Svengali, the dark character who crossed from his role as a charismatic Jewish musician who hypnotised and exploited a young woman, into a cultural icon of all things concealed, sinister, and malignantly persuasive. Using Trilby as the starting point for an exploration of cultural history Pick analyses the Trilby phenomenon, and explores what it was about the themes of the book that resonated so immediately and widely with the deep psychological dreads of fin de siecle society and beyond. Guiding us through the smoke-and-mirrors world of 19th century neurologists and anti-semites, best-selling novelists, Jewish conductors enthralling divas, and political nightmares, Pick unearths representations of Svengali in literature, theatre, film, music and politics to reveal the constituents of post-modern angst. This is a short book, immaculately written, and thick with allusion and revelation.

A Window and A Mirror.......2000-07-15
Decades ago while earning a graduate degree in comparative literature, I happened to come upon a badly-written novel authored by George Du Maurier. When I later asked my professor about it, he explained that Trilby was in fact a bestseller after its publication (in 1894) but that its only claim to literary fame is that it introduces a character named Svengali. I recalled that conversation as I began to read Pick's book. It is a brilliant achievement. The "web" to which the title refers consists of all manner of connections between hypnotism and anti-Semitism. Those connections are presumably what attracted Pick to Trilby and, especially, to the implications of the novel's great success in Victorian England.
Centuries earlier in A Merchant in Venice, Shakespeare introduced a usurer named Shylock who was viewed with contempt by most of the other characters. Revealingly, only Shylock fully honors all of the terms and conditions in his financial transactions to which others voluntarily (indeed eagerly) agree and yet he is reviled. Indeed, he is the principal victim in the play and yet, even today, is often viewed as the villain...usually by those who have not read the play or at least not read it with care. Shylock's name remains synonymous with unscrupulous money-lenders. Perhaps Pick had this in mind as he began to examine the character Svengali whose name is synonymous with hypnotic, almost irresistible evil. In any event, with consummate skill, Pick uses Svengali as a focal point through which to examine all manner of social and political forces at work in late-19th century England. In our own age when so many movies seem to be made primarily to sell merchandise, the "Trilby Phenomenon" also suggests commercial implications of mesmerizing significance.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Customer Reviews:
Top notch stuff!.......2000-07-23
I found this book to be a very good source, like most anything connected with the Dark Ages setting of White Wolf. The setting has a rich character, which holds true all the way through the book. Even if you don't intend to run an entire chronicle in the East, there is information on the other shen of the time. I see it having some usefulness in other settings, or even in other game systems, for those who wish to add a touch of darkness to the Orient. Unfortunately, as I am not a Masquerade: Kindred of the East Storyteller or player, I shall have to purchase the Kindred of the East book, for enough information to actually play one of the Wan Kuei, as it is still only a source book. I highly recommend it.
A historical sourcebook for Kindred of the East in Dark Ages.......2000-06-01
Well, The book is very good but I highly recommend getting Kindred of the East first and getting familiar with it. The book shows the different events and systems for the Dark Ages for Kindred of the East and it does a very nice job. Among my favorite is the list of the old weapons used in the far east like the naginata and the sai. Overall the book was good, but of course good only for those interested in Kindred of the East.
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A499713. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Sea/land-breeze events on the Monterey Bay are examined using data from the 915-MHz wind profiler and RASS systems. These sensors were deployed during Jun-Aug 1994 in conjunction with the REINAS Project conducted by various scientific institutions in the region. Data analyzed are continuous radar and virtual temperature returns located at four sites strategically positioned around the bay. This relatively new remote sensing device provides information on maximum and minimum sea/land breeze heights, onset and cessation times, virtual temperature distribution with height, and the effect of mountainous coastal topography on the sea and land breeze system.

Customer Reviews:
I don't care about his writing style.......2006-04-19
I was incharge of starting up a new help desk. This book was definitely the wrong book for that. I thought it was going to be more basic, foundational level instructions.
I guess it was not what I was looking for...
