American Hardcore Is A Good Book.......2007-05-16
American Hardcore chronicals and/or documents the history of the early 80's Hardcore(Punk)scene. Started by angry, fustrated, violent kids in the suburban seaside coastal middle class towns of Los Angeles, this movement spread from city to city and coast to coast. With each location holding thier own individuality, from L.A. to New York, to Chicago to San Francisco, to D.C. to Boston, Hardcore was more than music it was a social movement. Hardcore was a brand new fresh form of punk rock that was all it's own. While it branched off of the 70's Punk scene, it was it's own genre, who's participants constituted a tribe onto themselves. These kids were angry fustrated violent and fed up Regan-Era misfit kids. Becoming intertwined with Surfing and Skateboarding and becoming very close with it(As most of the bands were surfers and skateboarders), Hardcore redifined the status quoe of what was possibele when you did things your own way and you did it yourself(D.I.Y.). Hardcore's music was fast, with songs usually clocking in at around 2 minutes or less, energetic, and contained lyrics dealing with everything form political and social unjustice, to projecting anti-racist anti-war anti-conservative anti-reagan(Ronald Reagan) content and/or rants, with the lead singer usually screaming his or her head off in an angry manner that scared the crap off of (many) new wave fans,Hardcore was one of the most important musical movements in american history. While the mainstream refused then and refused now to give Hardcore the credit that it deserves(Although Hardcore was not looking at all for mainstream acceptance, in fact it was also a rebellion against the mainstream)Hardcore influenced countless things in the mainstream. From the pop-punk movement, to the crappy emo scene currently riding the charts rite now. Hardcore was a new form of radicalism, music, social outrage, political and socail commentary, and altogether one of the most important (musical)movements to ever take place in American History, and this book tells that story.
Very enjoyable book.......2007-02-14
For someone as young as me, who wasn't alive during the hardcore scene, this book comes in handy with good information. Steven Blush and others explain the hardcore scene in their own perspective. The entire book is made of interviews from people that were participants in the hardcore scene in the 80's. It includes people like Henry Rollins, Ian Mackaye, Jello Biafra, etc. In the beginning of the book the author and others sum up the roots of hardcore. Later on when they get started on HC (hardcore) they talk about things like straight-edge, Washington D.C., and others, where it gets really interesting to read. You don't have to know anything about HC to read this either.
You can tell Steven Blush didn't want to be biased about the subjects so he tries to put everybody's opinion about everything which basically evens it out by being factual rather than biased. The many pictures including the cover I think are very necessary for the book and display the proper attitude and energy of the HC scene. This book was very easy to understand and even fun to read. I do not recommend this book for very young readers; there are images that can be inappropriate for some. For other mature readers I definitely recommend this book to you, and please...don't judge this book by its bloody cover, it's a great book.
A vivid peek back into the scene.......2007-01-12
As one who was there in the L.A. scene, this was a fun, insightful look back in time. It was also interesting to hear points of view from many of the key people. As it has been a while, it helped solidify the memories and the evolution of how the scene came and went. I loved it. I enjoyed the photos, but would have loved to see more. It's like looking at an old yearbook or family album of sorts.
a pretty good source of information.......2006-08-06
a pretty complete overview of the HC scene, with a lot of good ideas provided for bands to explore that I had either never heard of or really didn't know too much about.
My only complaint is that the Slickee Boys were not a bad joke and that Tru Fax wasn't stupid.
Coffee table piece..........2006-07-16
I read this book from an "alternative" library here in town and I eventually bought it for myself.
I'm not going to bash the book because it doesn't mention "every band" or even many of the bands that I actually liked. It's written by one person... so it's obviously going to reflect the experiences and opinions of that one person. It's not meant to be an encylopedia as far as I know... and in the back of the book he even admits to having ignored any and all information about the things he's talking about that he could have found on the internet. It's his book............. whatever. haha
I think the film will be a lot better than the book because of the interviews with people, hearing things in their own voice but it's not a bad book at all.
It's def. one of those books that you have around and can look through from time to time because of the TONS of pictures and things of that nature. A great book for the coffee table, or bathroom... but no knock against the book.
I enjoyed this book but you have to understand, it's not a set of encylopedias, so don't feel dissed that your city isn't mentioned or your favorites bands aren't mentioned. Some people tend to hate on "American Hardcore" because they feel the author left a lot out.

Could many of the phenomena in the skies which are described in the Bible actually have been what modern science terms UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects)? The author, a minister and Biblical scholar with a degree in physics, considers this possibility in "The Bible and Flying Saucers."

Oh, please.......2002-02-23
This wasn't what I was looking for, I was disappointed why??? The book was very bland, uninformative and it really just very useful to me
Makes you wonder.......2002-01-05
This book bescribes Moses being protected by a u.f.o when the Red sea is seperated and the burning bush might have been extaterrestrial influenced. This book is filled with close encounters in the Bible that might have been aliens. This book is worth a read.
Pass on this one..........2001-12-21
This is the only book in my collection that I did not bother to finish. I have been reading on the subject since my early youth but this book could not retain my attention. It seemed repetitious at times and simply put...boring. I will end up using it as filler material for the bottom of my book shelf.
Will make everybody think over their religious beliefs.......2000-08-22
In this well thought out and researched book, Barry Downing provides evidence that extraterrestrials might have been behind the "miracles" of "God". Surprisingly, this book is written by a theologian, though most theologians oppose the Ancient Astronaunt theory. You should pick up this book even if you criticize UFOs.
Began ufos in the Bible. "Yahweh Encounters " proved it........1998-05-16
When a religious figure writes of UFO's in the Bible people read. While the idea started a movement, little scientific evidence is presented, such as can be found in Sitchen's books or in "Yahweh Encounters: Bible Astronauts, Ark Radiations and Temple Electroics" by Ann Madden Jones. However I recommend any Bible-UFO book by either a religious figure or one using detailed secular research to augment the Biblical evidence.

Book Description
ANGELS? DEMONS? EXTRATERRESTRIALS? A SIGN OF THE 'SECOND COMING'?
A Religious Leader. . . A Biblical Scholar. . .A UFO Researcher . . . And An Emmy Award Winning Journalist reveal:
WHAT YOUR MINISTER IS AFRAID TO TELL YOU ABOUT UFOS AND ALIENS!
The Bible is full of descriptions of UFOs that interacted with the Prophets of the Old and New Testaments.
For the first time five experts in their individual fields re-examine the Holy text in light of our current knowledge of space travel and UFO related phenomenon, offering a number of startling conclusions:
O The Tower of Babel was a spaceport presided over by godless scientists.
O God once walked the Earth in physical form.
O The Star of Bethlehem in all probability was flying saucer ushering in His arrival.
O The parting of the Red Sea was a miracle performed by extraterrestrials who had befriended the Israelites and "levitated" them across the Red Sea.
O That a giant spacecraft could possibly have landed upon Mount Sinai and given Moses the 10 Commandments.
FURTHERMORE, there is evidence says a member of our investigative team that at least one known Biblical figure went for a ride in a UFO.
It is also revealed that God may still be communicating to an "inspired few" members of a secret society that may possess a device that acts as sort of a "transceiver" between the Lord and the "Chosen Few."
And that members of the Royal Family of England believe thy have a "direct link" to Higher Realms as they are in possession of a stone with magical properties which is used as a pillow which now rests in Westminster Abbey, upon which Kings an Queens have been crowned for centuries.
Also discusses recent UFO encounters in the Holy Land an their possible connection with the Second Coming as dictated in the Bible in Luke 21:25 when Jesus says before his return that THERE WILL BE SIGNS IN THE SKY...and repeated in Rev. 1:7 with BEHOLD, HE COMETH WITH CLOUDS AND EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM...
This book is a MUST for believers and non believers alike.

God Arriving In A Flying Saucer.......2002-12-31
"Flying Saucers In The Holy Bible" offers a fascinating look at the religious and spiritual implications of the UFO phenomenon, both in ancient Biblical times and the present day.
It begins with a short book written by the late Virginia Brasington, an ordained minister whose excellent study of UFOs and the Bible was originally published in 1963. Brasington does a wonderful job of making the connections clearly and credibly between UFOs and scriptural phenomena like the "pillar of cloud" that led Moses and the Israelites through the desert. Was that perhaps a sighting of the oft-reported cigar-shaped UFO? And the terrifying appearance of God on the mountaintop where he spoke to Moses face to face, while the Israelites were warned not to approach the ship on pain of death, possibly because it was radioactive.
The recurrent use of the word "clouds" in both the Old and New Testaments is perhaps one of the easier relationships to grasp. Brasington argues that simple wisps of vapor in the skies would not perform like the clouds reported in the Bible. Often times, as with the Exodus in the desert, the cloud would give off bright light at nighttime, certainly something no ordinary cloud could accomplish. There are also repeated references to God "making the clouds his chariot," implying that the clouds described are a form of transportation for God and his compatriots.
The editor of "Flying Saucers In The Holy Bible," Timothy Green Beckley, has done us all a favor by reprinting Brasington's modest and sincere text on the Biblical interpretation of UFOs, but the anthology includes even more. Professor G. Cope Schellhorn contributes a chapter called "The Return of the Son of Man in the Clouds" in which he argues that Jesus' resurrection and ascension and even his Second Coming are all UFO-related inasmuch as they all involve the aforementioned "clouds" in one form or another.
Tim Swartz, an Emmy Award-winning journalist and the author of several books on the paranormal, speculates about the coming of a space age religion in which the belief in aliens is central. Swartz reminds us that every mainstream religion practiced today began as an "outsider" from of heresy, and the need to make religious sense of both the modern, technological world we find ourselves in as well as the never-ending stream of UFO sightings will inevitably lead to various alien "churches."
My own contribution to the book is a chapter in which alien abductees and researchers discuss their feelings about the moral implications of the abduction experience. Their opinions range from abductee Betty Luca's heartfelt belief that she has encountered angels onboard UFOs to top researcher Budd Hopkins' refusal to moralize about the subject at all, saying we lack the information to fully understand the aliens' true motives.
I also wrote the chapter on UFO sightings in modern Israel. It begins with some of the case histories collected by Israeli UFO researcher Barry Chamish of sightings and abductions there since the early 1980s. There is also an interview with Biblical scholar and television personality Gary Stearman, who talks about UFO sightings in Israel as being part of the spiritual warfare over the Holy Land that becomes more visible when Israel is threatened by enemies in the material world. In case after case, Stearman explains, warfare in Israel is accompanied by increased UFO sightings, which Stearman feels are intended to show the world that the aliens will defend Israel at all costs.
I have covered the subject of UFOs for more than ten years, and my primary interest has always been the religious aspects of the phenomenon, hoping that the aliens will prove themselves righteous friends of mankind in spite of all the bad press they currently receive. If you want to learn more about this interpretation of the UFO phenomenon, then "Flying Saucers In The Holy Bible" is a great place to start or continue your education.
SIMILARITIES BETWEEN UFOS TODAY AND BIBLICAL PHENOMENON.......2002-12-06
CAN THE MIRACLES OF THE BIBLE BE EXPLAINED IN TERMS OF FLYING SAUCERS AND ALIEN VISITATIONS? If you happen to turn on the TV and catch a Christian fundamentalist talking about UFOs, almost certainly they will say that the mysterious discs can be explained in terms of their association with Satan; that UFOS are the lights of Lucifer, since he is identified in the Bible as being the God of the Light and the North Star. Unfortunately, none of these men o the cloth have ever really bothered to investigate the thousands of reports o unidentified flying objects first and therefor should not really be discussing such things - especially if they have not read this book first! I have read several of the UFO-Bible books that have previously been published (those by Jessup and Rev Stranges), but none of them get to the heart of the subject like this collection put together by UFO research veteran Tim Beckley. Beckley has assembled a research team consisting of a minister, a Biblical scholar, an archaeologist and an Emmy Award Winning Journalist to search the Holy book for signs of ET visitation, and have seemingly made some startling discoveries. One of the most unusual features of this book are the photographic reproduction of various religious paintings circa l3th and l4th centuries which seem to show UFOs hovering over Jesus, a painting of Mary with an obviously unexplained object over her shoulder hovering in the sky above a shephard. The researchers ask if the Red Sea was perhaps parted by aliens attempting to save their Isrealite friends, and if the angel who appeared to Mary was not perhaps an ET sent from God to tell of the arrival of the Christ child. Perhaps the most interesting section is on the appearance of UFOs above the Holy land and a chapter on the many sightings and actual contacts taking place in the region. Sean Casteel interviews such UFO personalities as Whitley Strieber, Budd Hopkins, and Betty Andreasson concerning their abduction experiences and believes as balanced out by what Christianity may feel about this strange subject matter. I would not only recommend this book to those of deep faith, but to UFO researches who want to round out their UFO collection with something perhaps abit more sensible than the usual channelings of Jesus which cannot be verified.

Served me well as an introduction to web services........2006-06-01
To get right to the point, this book is written in a very easy to read and accessable style, with just the right diagrams and illustrations in the right places to aid in understanding.
I've never programmed with web services, but I need to know the terminology and basically what it's all about. This book served me well in this capacity.
It is not a book that goes into detail as to exactly how to do programming. This book is not technology specific, but rather after spending the first half easing the reader into exactly what web services are and why they exist, shows at a high-level how they are created with several different common technology platforms.
Also, there is a chapter on real world web services so the reader can go out and see exactly what web services look like when they are deployed in the "real world".
If you've never programmed a web services application before, I seriously doubt that you'll be able to do it after reading this book, at least nothing more than a simple example application. And in that sense, the title is a bit misleading. Perhaps it should have been "Introduce yourself to web services in 24 hours."
So, I can see how a certain type of reader might be dissapointed, but this book is exactly what I needed when I needed it.
Shipping and quality was great!.......2005-01-24
Book was practically new just like it was stated, and it didn't take more than 2 weeks to come which was PERFECT! There was almost no difference between this book and the new books =]
Great reading.......2003-12-17
The "Teach Yourself" series has done little to impress me until the arrival of this book. XML-based web services are getting traction as a truly standard way of enabling the service-oriented systems architecture. An architecture where systems can be built to expose services in such a way as to make it easier to integrate enterprise systems has been built many times already, but always ending up with constraints related to programming language, operating system and hardware. This book provides a good introduction to XML-based web services components including XML schema, WSDL, UDDI, SOAP and HTML with a comparison to the past attempts including DCOM and CORBA. The code examples require some analysis but are pretty helpful once you've taken the time to decode the XML and the scenario examples / case studies provide an interesting context to see how XML-based web services can be applied.
Diving into Web Services.......2003-10-14
As someone who knew ABSOLUTELY nothing about web services when I started, this book was the best of the 1/2 dozen titles I perused because it balanced high level understanding with the nitty-gritty and code examples. I found this book far most useful than titles such as 'Web Service: A Manager's Guide' and '.Net Web Services for Dummies'.
As someone who is not particularly technical, the code segments were still very useful in understanding what is going on. Without looking at a little code, understanding web services and its components becomes too esoteric. Why would you just describe an elephant when you can also provide a picture.
As someone who was just trying to understand web services and had no interest in comparing specific vendors' web services offerings, the chapters on commercial tools such as Apache Axis, Java, .NET, IBM Websphere and BEA Weblogic, and their specific pros/cons was not terribly interesting to me. But I could see how they would be valuable to an IT Professional.
The book does not really take 24 hours. Overall, I spent 9 intense hours working through this book to developing a good grasp of the technology. I recommend the opening chapters of 'Understanding .NET' by Chappell as a great supplement. Chappel gives great brief high-level descriptions on the components of web services and how they came about.
...
A good way to learn what web services are.......2003-07-09
To learn how to build and use web services, you first must determine what they are and how they differ from current technologies used in the development and use of web pages. With the exception of being based on eXtensible Markup Language (XML), they are only different in degree from widely used web technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASPs) and Java Server Pages (JSPs).
The authors do a good job of explaining what web services are and how they differ from other technologies. They also do not fall victim to the evangelical bug, being very explicit in pointing out the disadvantages of web services as well as the advantages as a chapter is devoted to each point. Another chapter is devoted to comparing how web services differ from other technologies such as ASPs, JSPs, Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI).
The middle section of the book is devoted to describing the architecture of web services , the basics of XML, how web services communicate using XML and Simple Object Access Prototcol (SOAP), how web services are described using Web Services Description Language (WSDL), and how to advertise a web service using Universal Description , Discovery and Integration (UDDI). While not detailed, it is a complete introduction to all of the steps you must go through to create a complete web service that others can use.
The third section is devoted to describing several tools that can be used to build web services. Commercial tools such as Apache Axis, Java, .NET, IBM Websphere and BEA Weblogic are covered and the authors are to be commended in also showing how they can be built using inexpensive and free toolkits. Finally, the last section covers topics such as the interoperability of web services, how security is included in web services and what some of the future trends in web services may be.
This book is an introduction to web services, so it is not possible to learn all of the specifics you need to build complex web services from it. However, if you are a beginner, there is enough information to get you started and to help you make decisions concerning whether you want to start building them.
