Very detailed account of early rock music.......2007-07-06
The amount of detail in this book is amazing. Not for the casual music listener, but great for those of us who grew up in the golden age of rock and roll. This book fills in many of the blanks for us hard core music fans who want to know the stories behind the songs.
Good Book About The Era.......2007-06-16
Just a couple of things to add to the other comments here:
Writer must have a grudge against Steve Lawrence/Eydie Gorme as he insults them every 10 pages.
Very little is said about the actual musicians in the book, only the songwriters.
But a couple of incredible nuggets, that several Bacharach-David tunes had drummers using one stick and one brush. And that "A House Is Not A Home" refers to a bordello.
In the coda, book makes a brief note about Carole King's Tapestry, which is still one of the biggest selling records of all time. Carol, more than anyone besides Sedaka, bridged gap between songwriter and performer.
Back in the Day.......2007-05-12
This "just the facts ma'am" book chronicles a fascinating time when songwriting made the leap from tin pan alley sentimentality to sophisticated pop (hard to believe they called it rock and roll!) with many fascinating personalities and future pop stars. If early rock and roll history is your bag, dude, then this is fun, well researched book.

If you think you'd like this, you will. You're guaranteed to pick up some interesting new details, while getting a context for the creation of many of rock n' roll's most enduring songs.
Great read - that music will never sound the same again.......2006-07-14
I didn't know what to think - a serious book about the fluff and and the writers of pre-Beatles Rock 'n Roll!
Well, this is a great one. Well written, and an easy read, it is chock full of stories about the songs I grew up on in the 60's. It has given me a new appreciation and respect for that music and its' creators. The author qualifies this book with a comment about it not being comprehensive or encyclopedic. No apologies necessary. He does justice to the material covered, and does not pretend to cover it all, just an important part of the New York music scene of its' day. I will be reading it again in a few months. I can't wait to re-read those stories about how these songs came to be written and recorded.

The Second Edition of Correctional Contexts remains dedicated to presenting contemporary and classic articles in correctional development - tracing the history and origins of corrections and punishment in the United States. New articles in every section of the book offer a much broader base for students to learn about and critically analyze institutionalized populations.
Twenty-two articles are new to this edition. Changes include the following:
The History of Punishment and Origins of Imprisonment were previously two separate sections. Now they are one. The second section is now entitled Living in Prison. Two new articles deal with the Supermax facility as a recent development, as well as issues surrounding the female incarcerated offender. The third section, Working in Prison, consists of all new articles (save one) adding to the relevancy and role of "work" in the institutional environment. The fourth section, Prisoner Litigation and Inmates' Rights, remains largely unchanged, with the exception of one addition. The fifth section, Institutional Programming and Treatment, consists of new articles. They outline critical issues regarding institutional treatment and correctional programming today. The sixth section, Release from Prison and Parole, replaces the First Edition's section on Community Corrections. Four new articles explore issues of released prisoners in the community. The seventh section, New Directions, contains two new articles that focus on the future of institutional corrections and public support for correctional treatment.
New introductions to each article and each section guide the student through a critical analysis of the readings that follow. Key issues and concepts are identified. This will also aid the instructor in the development of class discussion and exam creation - as will the study questions that follow each article.

Indigenous knowledges are understood as the commonsense ideas and cultural knowledges of local peoples concerning the everyday realities of living. This definition refers to the epistemic saliency of cultural traditions, values, belief systems and world views that, in any indigenous society, are imparted to the younger generation by community elders. It is also refers to world views that are products of a profoundly direct experience of nature and its relationship with the social world.
Bringing new and complex readings to the term 'indigenous', this collection of essays from Canadian and international contributors is an invitation to critically engage in the discussion of indigenous knowledges and their implication for academic decolonization. The essays are divided into four sections: Situating Indigenous Knowledges: Definitions and Boundaries; Indigenous Knowledge: Resistance and Advocacy; Indigenous Knowledge and the Academy; and Indigenous Knowledge and Transforming Practices. Collectively the essays situate indigenous knowledges in relation to conventional knowledges, validate the existence of multiple sources of knowledge, and examine the varying strategies, projects, and theories that are currently being developed in support of indigenous knowledges.
The book draws attention to some of the nuances, contradictions, and contestations in affirming the place of indigenous knowledges in the academy, while maintaining that different bodies of knowledges continually influence each other to reveal the dynamism of all knowledge systems.

nice book of fingerplays.......2004-01-17
This book contains 38 finger plays, from the well-known (I'm a Little Teapot) to ones I've never heard of (Here are Mother's Knives and Forks). Each is in big type with large illustrations to show you how to do the fingerplay. For those that are sung, musical arrangements are at the back of the book, along with a bibliography and index.
Excellent resource for the fingerplay challenged!
Joanna Cole succeeds again.......2000-06-11
As someone with training in folklore, I always trust a book with Joanna Cole's name on it. This book does a very good job of showing (rather than desscribing) the actions and provides the words and music. As it is folklore, you will find some of the fingerplays or action rhymes from your childhood as well as new additions to your repetoire. As I have come to expect, I believe that the publishing company has underestimated the age range for which the book is appropriate ... listen to your young friends after their first camping trip with the cub scouts, bluebirds etc. and you will find that even at that ages children are teaching children some of these plays.

I love this book! I use it all the time when I want to keep kids up to 6 years old busy. I have kids who visit who beg me to bring out the book to do the finger plays. I recommend it highly.
