    ...sometimes.

Just to get one thing clear, I do like Bridget De Socio's work, I have no bias against her for any reason. This is just an honest review of a book!

Let's begin with the production quality of this volume. I have to say that the paper stock is rather flimsy. It feels cheap and it's got this gross powdery feeling when you touch it. Maybe it will go away in time, maybe it won't. I don't know what she was thinking, I have magazines printed with better paper. The binding of this book is disturbingly flimsy too. She's probably trying to be out of the ordinary, but come on, it looks like it's falling apart. I know it's supposed to look like the spine of a hardcover book when you take the cover off, but this makes the spine weak and consequentially, easy to fall apart. Without a cover, I find the pages get damaged easily. The pages buckle back and forth without a strong spine supporting it. And that sums the book up contentwise too, spineless...

This book is divided up in sections of her work for different clients (Ex: Paper magazine, Vera Wang, Pantone, Hermes, etc...) with various people from the design industry praising her at the beginning of each chapter. Most of the work is wonderful, innovative, top notch stuff, but I can't help but see it as becoming/being dated. It seems to be based on flashy Photoshop work with a little content thrown in to boot.

I admire Bridget De Socio for her innovative use of Photoshop (most notably on the Paper magazine covers) but the rest seems like fluff IMHO. The Vera Wang section had one strong image, but then tends to fall apart after that. The work for Pantone seemed fun at the time, but now that I look at it again it seems over computerized and gaudy.

This is a good reference book to have in a designer's collection but three words sums this book up: one-trick-pony. Don't be caught doing the same thing.

        Book Description

Most of Paul's letters, especially First Corinthians, were written in the context of conflict with troublemaking opponents and the social dilemma at the Lord's Supper in Corinth. First Corinthians provides a unique glimpse into the social custom of the Christian congregation in a Greaco-Roman environment during the early years of the Christian Church. Much effort has gone into reconstructing what happened at the Lord's Supper and the social issues that were involved. More recently, attention has focused on the Corinthian congregation itself and how Paul solved the issue of idol food and dining in a pagan temple.

            Description:
Behavioral economics is now receiving greater acceptance in the economics profession. One illustration of this acceptance is the Nobel Prize awarded to George Akerloff in 2001. Akerloff's work included issues of rationality, work norms, and asymmetric information in both more and less developed countries. Leibenstein was one of the first economists in recent decades to explore behavioral economics. This was accomplished through his development of X-efficiency theory, but not exclusively through X-efficiency theory. This paper will show similarities in the work done by Akerloff and Leibenstein, and cite examples of how Akerloff extended some of Leibenstein's work, leading to Akerloff's much deserved Nobel Prize.

              Description:
A database has been developed containing downscaled socio-economic scenarios of future population and GDP at country level and on a geo-referenced gridscale. It builds on the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES), but has been created independently of that report. The SRES scenarios are derived from projected data on economic, demographic, technological and land-use changes for the 21st century in a highly aggregated form consisting of four world regions. Since analysts often need socio-economic data at higher spatial resolutions that are consistent with GCM climate scenarios, we undertook linear downscaling to 2100 of population and GDP to the country level of the aggregated SRES socio-economic data for four scenario families: A1, A2, B1, B2. Using these country-level data, we also generated geo-spatial grids at 1/4^o resolution (~30km at the equator) for population ''density'' (people/unit land area) and for GDP ''density'' (GDP/unit land area) for two time slices, 1990 and 2025. This paper provides background information for the databases, including discussion of the data sources, downscaling methodology, data omissions, discrepancies with the SRES report, problems encountered, and areas needing further work.

                Description:
In aggregation for data envelopment analysis (DEA), a jointly determined aggregate measure of output and input efficiency is desired that is consistent with the individual decision making unit measures. An impasse has been reached in the current state of the literature, however, where only separate measures of input and output efficiency have resulted from attempts to aggregate technical efficiency with the radial measure models commonly employed in DEA. The latter measures are ''incomplete'' in that they omit the non-zero input and output slacks, and thus fail to account for all inefficiencies that the model can identify. The Russell measure eliminates the latter deficiency but is difficult to solve in standard formulations. A new approach has become available, however, which utilizes a ratio measure in place of the standard formulations. Referred to as an enhanced Russell graph measure (ERM), the resulting model is in the form of a fractional program. Hence, it can be transformed into an ordinary linear programming structure that can generate an optimal solution for the corresponding ERM model. As shown in this paper, an aggregate ERM can then be formed with all the properties considered to be desirable in an aggregate measure-including jointly determined input and output efficiency measures that represent separate estimates of input and output efficiency. Much of this paper is concerned with technical efficiency in both individual and system-wide efficiency measures. Weighting systems are introduced that extend to efficiency-based measures of cost, revenue, and profit, as well as derivatives such as rates of return over cost. The penultimate section shows how the solution to one model also generates optimal solutions to models with other objectives that include rates of return over cost and total profit. This is accomplished in the form of efficiency-adjusted versions of these commonly used measures of performance.

                  Description:
Parental ratings of 695 adopted Chinese girls' internalizing, externalizing, and total problem behaviors were analyzed in 4 stages to: (1) Compare adjustment profiles of Chinese adoptee samples with relevant US normative data; (2) analyze age differences in behavioral adjustment differences of Chinese adoptees; (3) examine interrelationships among the 3 behavior problem scores and child's age at adoption, current age, pre-adoption neglect, and post-adoption initial rejection behaviors; and (4) explore the degree to which the 4 child-level independent variables worked individually or collectively to predict behavioral adjustment outcomes. Chinese adoptees had better adjustment scores than normative samples from the U.S. Preschool-age adoptees had better adjustment scores than school-age adoptees. No relationships were observed between the age-related variables and behavioral adjustment measures. However, pre-adoption neglect and post-adoption initial rejection behaviors were predictors of behavioral adjustment scores. The implications of these findings for future research, clinical practice and parenting education were discussed.

                    Description:
This study reports on New Zealand dairy farmers' access to and use of information as mediated through conditions of risk and trust within the context of their interpersonal social networks. We located participants' reports of their information use within their perceived environments of trust and risk, following Giddens's [1990. The consequences of modernity. Polity Press, Stanford, CA] typology of trust and risk in pre-modernity and modernity. The research participants were constant users of interpersonal and print information from numerous sources, and monitored their incoming data in the light of strategic needs, reflecting their roles as both farming practitioners and business owners. Socio-spatial knowledge networks (SSKNs) combine individuals' explanatory cognitive models of information acquisition and use with a micro-geographical analysis of their interpersonal networks. The participants showed characteristics of pre-modern, modern and even post-modern society in respect of their use of complex interactional forms, as well as a blending of individualistic and communitarian practices and concerns in their professional and personal lives.

                      Description:
Rural housing land accounted for 67.3% of China's total construction land in 2000. While there are numerous studies analyzing the loss of arable land due to urban sprawl, less attention has been paid to the study of rural housing land in China. This paper develops a theoretical framework for rural housing land transition in China. It introduces a research method, which is using the spatial differentiation in regional development for compensating the deficiencies in time-series data, to analyze the rural housing land transition in the Transect of the Yangtse River (TYR). Detailed land-use data and socio-economic data from both research institutes and government departments were used to test the following hypothesis on rural housing land transition. We assume that rural housing in every region will undergo specific stages-the proportion of rural housing in the increase of total construction land will decline gradually with the development of the local economy, and the end of the transition corresponds to a new equilibrium between rural housing and other construction activities. Five regional types of rural housing land change were defined according to an aggregation index used to reflect landscape patterns. The outcomes indicated that the share of rural housing in the increase of total construction land declines gradually from the upper reaches to the lower reaches of the Yangtse River, i.e. from Ganzi-Yushu to Luzhou-Diqing, Enshi-Chongqing, Tongling-Yichang and to Shanghai-Chaohu. Each region is in a different phase of the rural housing land transition, which corresponds to a particular socio-economic developmental level. Finally, some policy implications were discussed by applying this research to land management issues. The authors argue that there are problems in the current rural housing land managerial system in China, and that the Central Government needs to define uniform regulations for rural housing according to regional socio-economic developmental level, physical conditions and rural housing land transition phase.

4 out of 5 stars The whole dynasty.......2004-06-14

My niece, now all of eight years old, has taken to playing with various kinds of paper and cut-out dolls. Rather than just have the kinds of Barbie and other stuff, I decided that best thing to do would be to get real people she could identify with. In addition to the George Bush and company set, I got her this one, and a few more.

The Royal Family is popular in America, and my niece recognized the people right away for the most part. She recognized Princess Diana most of all. The collection is mostly centered on the Queen, with images of different stages in her life. Then there is Philip; all their four children Charles, Andrew, Edward and Anne.

There's formal and informal wear, including things for official occasions and fun occasions, like horseback riding, which the Royal Family love to do. This is a very campy kind of thing to have -- if you have the magnetic David and Venus for your refrigerator, you could always fashion these cut-outs to go on your refrigerator also.

                      God save the Queen!

                      Book Description

More often than not, the words "sendmail configuration" strike dread in the hearts of sendmail and system administrators--and not without reason. sendmail configuration languages are as complex as any other programming languages, but used much more infrequently--only when sendmail is installed or configured. The average system administrator doesn't get enough practice to truly master this inscrutable technology. Fortunately, there's help. The sendmail Cookbook provides step-by-step solutions for the administrator who needs to solve configuration problems fast. Say you need to configure sendmail to relay mail for your clients without creating an open relay that will be abused by spammers. A recipe in the Cookbook shows you how to do just that. No more wading through pages of dense documentation and tutorials and creating your own custom solution--just go directly to the recipe that addresses your specific problem. Each recipe in the sendmail Cookbook outlines a configuration problem, presents the configuration code that solves that problem, and then explains the code in detail. The discussion of the code is critical because it provides the insight you need to tweak the code for your own circumstances. The sendmail Cookbook begins with an overview of the configuration languages, offering a quick how-to for downloading and compiling the sendmail distribution. Next, you'll find a baseline configuration recipe upon which many of the subsequent configurations, or recipes, in the book are based. Recipes in the following chapters stand on their own and offer solutions for properly configuring important sendmail functions such as: sendmail Cookbook is more than just a new approach to discussing sendmail configuration. The book also provides lots of new material that doesn't get much coverage elsewhere--STARTTLS and AUTH are given entire chapters, and LDAP is covered in recipes throughout the book. But most of all, this book is about saving time--something that most system administrators have in short supply. Pick up the sendmail Cookbook and say good-bye to sendmail dread.

                      5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2005-08-08

Great book, exactly what I needed. I'm pretty good with Sendmail, but there is nothing like just looking up an issue and following through a solution. I would recommend this to anyone who works with Sendmail!

5 out of 5 stars This book has something about sendmail for everyone.......2005-01-20

This book has something about sendmail for everyone.
I know sendmail very well, and have used it for years.

But even I and sendmail gurus I work with learned a lot.

                      this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who administers sendmail.......2004-08-27

Working with sendmail can be very challenging at times; while the documentation for it is very complete, finding real-life use-cases can be tough and messing up a configuration is very easy. Fortunately the sendmail authors and community adopted the m4 language to help make building and managing sendmail configurations less painful (I remember having bad dreams about sendmail configuration language when I started learning it). Even with m4, understanding what goes where when and why in a sendmail configuration file can be a real challenge.

O'Reilly helped we mere mortals out tremendously with the publication of "Sendmail: The Definitive Guide," a book that helped demystify and clarify many of sendmail's inner-workings and configuration options. Even with this book, it was still hard to answer real-life use case questions, like how to enable SMTP AUTH for sendmail, how do I use LDAP with sendmail, how do I use sendmail to accept email for multiple domains in a virtual hosting environment, how do I use blackhole list services?

Enter "Sendmail Cookbook." This clear, easy to read, well-indexed book contains a wealth of useful recipies that make previously difficult to figure out tasks quite easy. The book is organized in typical Cookbook fashion; each chapter or section stands on it's own, and if it does require knowledge of other sendmail configuration topics, the section includes cross-references to other relevant recipies and references to appropriate sections in the "Sendmail: The Definitive Guide" book, which is a nice additional feature.

This cookbook starts with recipies that step the reader through building and installing sendmail, with sections on configuring the build so that sendmail compiles with SSL/STARTTLS support, LDAP support, and SASL support. Chapters that follow deal with everything from enabling and configuring SMTP AUTH, to securing sendmail itself, to controlling spam. Recipies use m4 whenever possible and only dip into the sendmail configuration language when necessary, another feature I found very impressive.

I own quite a few O'Reilly books; this is one of a small number that I enjoy just picking up and flipping to a random page and reading; I always find something that I either didn't know or had forgotten. I wish I had this book seven years ago when I was struggling to learn the basics of sendmail configuration and administration; I might have more hair left if I had! I highly recommend this book to anyone who works with sendmail, be that daily administration or occassional troubleshooting.

4 out of 5 stars Not for amatuers.......2004-04-30

This is definitely a book for systems administrators. You won't learn the basics about sendmail, or get an introduction. This book is for folks who generally know sendmail, but are having specific issues with it.

The first chapter has a lot of very specific fixes for a bunch of operating system specific issues. After that the solutions become a bit more general.

The two standout chapters are chapter four, on relaying, and chapter six on spam filtering. Both of these have great introductions and in-depth techincal descriptions, with effective graphics, covering the topics.

I recommend this book for systems administrators and for people actively using with sendmail.

5 out of 5 stars A Much Easier Way to Handle Sendmail.......2003-12-31

The first killer application of the Internet was email. For over twenty years, the most common program used to handle this was sendmail, written by Eric Allman. Over this time, sendmail has become a fully fledged language, with a very inelegant syntax. To learn how this, you need the book "Sendmail" by Costales and Allman.

The basic problem is that twenty years of ever increasing complexity in mail handling has created concomitant complexity in sendmail. For system adminstrators, the sendmail configuration files are probably the most complicated things they have to understand and maintain.

The rub is that most sysadmins have many duties, and little time to thoroughly read the above book. What is needed is a crib sheet, that lets you quickly solve very common sendmail configuration issues. Wherein the need for this book. Hunt takes a pragmatic approach. He tells you enough to handle these common issues. Sometimes, this comes at a slight cost. For example, he never really fully explains the the sendmail class notation. For a rigorous explanation, you still need Allman's book. But as a practical matter, you probably not that curious about the notation anyway. Hunt's approach may solve your problems quicker!

An interesting aspect of this Cookbook is that it shows the recent evolution of sendmail, as seen in the subtitle at the top of the cover, "Spam-Fighting". Sysadmins who dealt with sendmail from 5 years ago or earlier will recall nothing pertaining to antispam techniques.

But just as email was the first killer application, the second killer application was the browser, starting in 1992-3. The third killer application was spam, often viewed via the second application. In the last 5 years, spam has grown amazingly. So much so that it has been debated on the floors of the US Parliament! It has gotten to the point that some alarmists are even claiming that this third killer app might be crippling the first app!

Well, this Cookbook has several sections, including an entire chapter, focussed on various antispam techniques, like procmail parsing, or hooking up to Real Time Block Lists like spamhaus.org. The efficacy of such methods may vary widely, but you do get a choice. Though none of these currently appear to offer a truly effective countermeasure. You are still getting tons of spam, aren't you?

Perhaps some genius in the not too distant future can help us!
