Book Description
Protest and Popular Culture is at once a historical monograph and a critique of postmodernist approaches to the study of mass media, consumerism, and popular political movements.
In it, Triece compares the self-representations of several late nineteenth and twentieth-century women's protest movements with representations of women offered by contemporaneous mass media outlets. She shows that from the late nineteenth century until the present day, U.S. women's protest movements sought to convince women that they are first and foremost laborer/producers, while the U.S. media has just as consistently sought to convince women that they are primarily consumers. Triece contends that these approaches to portraying women have been and continue to be constructed in opposition to one another. The leaders of women's protest movements, she argues, have long sought to convince women not to spend time and money on reshaping their selves through consumer purchases, but instead to focus attention on empowering themselves politically by asserting control over their own labor power. The mass media, meanwhile, has always treated such movements as potential threats to the financial well-being of the consumer sector (that is, of advertisers), and so has consistently trivialized them, while seeking simultaneously to convince women that they should devote attention and resources to buying things, not to struggling to overcome class and gender discrimination.
Many cultural-studies scholars have argued that in recent years, rising prosperity has made consumerism into the primary site of both individual expression and "resistance" to the dominant socio-economic order, with self-definition through personal purchases supplanting the role formerly played by struggle for an end to inequities of all kinds. These scholars contend that as such, mass media no longer function to naturalize, and thus reinforce such inequities, and consumerism no longer serves to perpetuate them. Triece argues that her examples show that this argument is faulty, and that scholars should continue to take a traditional materialist view in all studies of mass media, consumerism, and popular protest.

Good start for the Newbie.......2006-03-08
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be. The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required. The patterns included in the book will get you started in fine fashion.
Good, but misleading cover.......2004-02-28
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.
Lost in the woods.......2000-08-25
As I became lost in the art of intarsia, this book was my map. Completely unknown to the craft, I purchased this book as a way to beat my summer bordom. As I opened each page, a swirl of thoughts came to me, and I immediately made plans to visit the local hardwood retailer to start my first project. But where to start? This book has the most wonderful design ideas, from beginner to advanced, even I was impressed with the works I had done. You can make each project over and over, because the wood you use is always different. I would recomend this book highly to anyone slightly interested in the art and history and creativity of intarsia.

Teach Yourself Intarsia & Fair Isle Knitting.......2007-04-20
I have started knitting again after many years and wanted to knit intarsia
(picture) sweaters for my grandboys. I liked the patterns in the book and felt the explanations were very good especially for someone beginning intarsia.

This is my second book by Roberts and it is wonderful. She has a terrific artistic ability and her patterns are . . . well, wonderful! The pictures are clear and detailed and the instructions to make the intarsia projects are thorough. I can't wait to get started!

Worst Programming Book I've Ever Bought.......2007-04-20
I bought this book because I thought it would help me get a working example of using Hibernate working quickly. However, I found it completely impossible to get even the first example listed in the book working. The source code provided on their web site doesn't work despite many people complaining that it is broken. Even worse, the source code does not match the book text (I suspect the authors were rushing to make their book listings to read as-if it were Hibernate version 3 compatible but didn't bother to update the sample code), so it's impossible to follow along.
After several hours of frustration, I ended up taking the book back to the bookstore and bought Beginning Hibernate by Dave Mitner instead. It helped me get a working example up quickly and contained much more up-to-date information, and was much more clear.
In short, don't waste your time with this book, buy Beginning Hibernate (or anything else really) instead.
Nice quick reference.......2006-11-16
I think the book does what it says. I was able to finish the basic understanding of Hibernate 3 within 2 days flat. The language is really easy and it provides the crux of crucial concepts within 3-4 chapters. Sometimes I have seen that reference books talk too much on all the concepts and I usually get bored till I come to say 11th chapter where real concepts are used.

Chapter 2 in the book is EXCELLENT. Step by step on how to install and setting up and project.
After setting up everything from chapter 2, when you start learning Hibernate, this is what you're going to get:
1. Examples in the book do not match the code
2. The codes aren't complete
3. Authors walk you all over the place. You'll get even more confused after reading this book
4. Sample codes in the book aren't clear
My opinion:
I think the authors wrote this book while doing something else. The ideas are not focus.

...for the book before you buy it. This book does exactly what it was intended to do. It "give(s) readers the 20% of information they need 80% of the time". If you're already a somewhat experienced user of Hibernate and learning the first 20% of it is not your goal, then this book is not for you. Sounds like many people are holding this book accountable for the egregious void of in-depth and recent Hibernate3 books and lack of good documentation on it's own site. Don't burn a good book because hibernate.org doesn't even offer a metadata reference. Although I am referring to the book less over time, I a lot of value from it. If you don't know Hibernate, and want to, buy this book.
I hate this book.......2006-04-16
This book is a product of confused Authors , it began well but after one week i could'nt get an application running that could retrieve Information from the Database. The Source Code downloaded from the web site was quite different from Book
