      4 out of 5 stars Good Collector's Item.......2006-06-07

I bought this because I'm a huge fan of Angelina Jolie, and even though it's a little basic, I enjoyed it and it makes a great addition to any collection or a great coffee table book.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice Photos.......2005-11-05

"Celebrity Skin" is basically a coffee table book full of photos of stars and their tattoos. It covers not just actors, but also sports icons, models and musicians. My two favorites being Bjork and Johnny Depp.

The photos are really nice and ones that I haven't seen elsewhere. The info was interesting, but I guess I was hoping for more insight on to what the tattoos symbolilze to the people who got them.

While I didn't dislike this book as much as some of the other reviewers, I should say that this was given to me as a gift and it's probably not a book I'd have purchased (definitely one to look at in the bookstore). I'm giving it four stars because it was fun to look through and the photos really are nice.

      1 out of 5 stars TRUELY DISAPPOINTING.......2004-01-31

What probably started off as a good idea over drinks late one night, this book looks like it was hurrily stitched together the next day like Frankenstein's monster. It seems like the author clipped up all his old People magazines and, along with every file photo he could lay his hands on, slapped together 2 pages for every celebrity/group he had. That's when the trouble starts. The pictures, more often then not, don't highlight the tattoos (or other body art) because they weren't shot for that purpose. They were just rounded up for Gerard to hang some lame (often smarmy) information around. This info is broken down into 4 categories : The Inside Scoop (a quickie bio), Raw Data (real names, birth [and sometimes death] dates, accomplishments, etc.), Skin Deep (obviously incomplete info about the celeb's body art that doesn't even list what is clearly showing in the accompanying photos), and Strange But True (Ripley's Believe It Or Not need not worry). The most glaring error of the book occurs when Gerard describes the tattoos that adorned each of the shoulders of the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC. If you were to look at the pictures showing these 2 tattoos, you would immediately notice that both are shown to reside on the same left shoulder (the number 80/falcon tat on page 144 was indeed on her left shoulder while the Parron tat was on her right thus page 145 photo is actually backwards). While I didn't expect to see every marking on each celeb's body (at least not here), I bought this book expecting to see a little more. The back cover advertises "Up close (strike 1) and lavish (strike 2), here is the ultimate collection (strike 3 - yer out) of beauty marks for beautiful people". I'm glad I didn't pay full cover price for this turkey. Truely disappointing.

      1 out of 5 stars totally dissapointed.......2003-09-14

1st you can't see any of the tattoos, the photos are blurry and the descriptions of the tattoos are either incomplete, wrong or just not there. It was more like a copy of The National Inquirer on what the stars like to eat for breakfast. It had nothing to do with tattoos or what they mean. I was really dissapointed and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

      5 out of 5 stars Starstruck.......2002-09-20

I have read the other reviews online, which is what prompted me to write. Although I agree with some of their points, this title is a beautiful addition for anyone interested in the stars. Never before has there been a collection of adornments of the stars, and I found the text rather intriguing. I feel this book is accessible to everyone, not just tatoo freaks, and the design and layout are great.

      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Paul Hague's book is a great guide to do-it-yourself wargaming. If you want play a naval battle without all the extras and buying a pre-published version, Paul can show you the way.

I use it for Dungeons and Dragons when I need a naval battle and just adjust the rules to fit the game and events. It is a great resource and gives you just the right level of detail to play a battle without much more than some ship models (the ones on the cover are painted balsa, cardboard, toothpicks!) and a few miniatures.

This is the classic hands-on gaming book.

A delightful book with suitable rules for learned, well read gentlemen to employ in the purpose of pushing miniature ships from all eras around the living room floor and invoking simulated combat while enjoying the company of other similarly minded people and quaffing a few beers. Or is that quaffing a few beers and pushing miniature ships around the living room. Doesn't matter. Sign me up.

Chap 1. About Naval Wargaming. Not comprehensive, but adequate to set up the rest of the book.

Chap 2. Equipment for Naval Wargaming. Pencil, paper, a few cardboard cutouts, some dice, and miniature ships. It can very inexpensive. Taking your wife out to dinner as compensation for disarraying the parlor will cost you more.

Chap 4. Ancient galley warfare: sails, oars, archers, marines, crew energy, ramming, repair, oar raking, boarding, supporting sinking ships, bolt throwing engines, stone throwing engines and crew moral.

Chap 5. The Battle of Thestos c 200 BC.

4 out of 5 stars Good Way to Get Started with ASP.NET 2.0 - Wish it had more advanced topics.......2007-01-16

For those transitioning from ASP.NET 1.x this is a fantastic introduction to learning how things should be done with 2.0. The book is well-written, concise, and easy to absorb the concepts it presents.

I've always loved the "Cookbook" format, which is to present a list of tasks 100 or so tasks that you might want to accomplish, and then give detailed instructions on how to accomplish each one. The one thing I would like to have seen, and the reason it didn't receive 5 stars, is that the book focuses on introductory tasks. Since I've been working with 2.0 for several months I already knew how to do most of the items they discussed.

Overall, this book will serve as a great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome for those moving from ASP 1.1 to ASP 2.0.......2006-09-28

This is the perfect book for those who know ASP 1.x and need a find a way to solve a problem QUICKLY in ASP 2.0. It covers the vast majority of new features in ASP 2.0 as well as new ways acomplish tasks that were more difficult in ASP 1.0. A must have in for ASP 2.0 Programmers!

            5 out of 5 stars COOKING WITH ASP.NET 2.0!!.......2006-08-14

Are you journeyman programmer who knows the basics of ASP.NET? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoffrey T Leblond and Michael A Kittel, have done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that is a collection of ASP.NET 2.0 recipes that aims to help you quickly and efficiently solve many of the day-to-day problems you face when developing web applications with the .NET platform.

Leblond and Kittel, begin by showing you how to make the most out of the master pages. Then, the authors show you how to make well-informed decisions about which control to use. Next, they provide recipes that perform a number of data validation tasks. The authors then provide you with series of nonobvious solutions for working with forms. They continue by showing you how to use time- and work-savers. Then, the authors show you how to use custom controls to build your own user interface. Next, they show you how to maintain the state of the application. The authors then cover error handling at different levels of detail. They continue by providing recipes that delve into some of the most common solutions. They also cover a host of new ASP.NET 2.0 profile features. Then the authors show you how to use web parts in your applications. Next, they show you how to configure your applications. The authors show you ways on how to ensure that your applications work as anticipated in their first release, through the effective use of testing and debugging. Then, they will show you how to create and consume XML web services. Next, the authors will show you how to deal with a design that uses images for buttons, but the button labels need to be dynamic. The authors then will help you sort through the issues of caching the output of pages or portions of pages in memory to reduce latency and make your applications more responsive. They continue by showing you the basics of how to internationalize your applications. Then, the authors show you how to download files from and upload files to the web server. Next, they discuss how to measure performance. The authors then show you how to create your own custom HTTP handler. Finally, they help you with recipes that do not fit conveniently into the other chapters of the book.

This most excellent book contains dozens of code examples, ranging from relatively simple 10-liners to comprehensive, multipage solutions. More importantly, this book focuses directly on problems you face today or are likely to face in the future.

            2 out of 5 stars ASP.NET 1.1 with a bit of 2.0 patched on.......2006-08-09

Much of the content was clearly taken from earlier 1.x versions of the book without being re-written to take advantage of 2.0. Yes, the samples may compile and work, but they are often not 2.0 best practices.

While there are several 2.0-specific sections, much 2.0 function is ignored. You'll learn more from other books.

5 out of 5 stars Recipes run from the very simple coding solution to entire development strategies.......2006-06-05

Michael Kittel and Geoffrey LeBlond's ASP.NET 2.0 Cookbook appears in its updated 2nd edition to include all new tips for version 2.0. Here are over a hundred solutions in C# and Visual Basic aimed to web developers who want an edition completely revised for 2.0. Recipes run from the very simple coding solution to entire development strategies and use O'Reilly's problem-and-solution oriented approach. This format lends to at-a-glance reference consultation - or to use as a classroom text. Either way, the authors' some thirty years experience working with ASP.NET lends to an authoritative text of solutions to common problems.
