5 out of 5 stars Another Work of Genius.......2007-09-26

Beautifully layed out, the book showcases the artwork by the Pixar guys and gals in a way that is a masterpiece in itself. Simply put.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous conceptual art.......2007-09-01

Pixar Animation Studios are recognized the world over as leaders in the field of CG animated movies. The road from idea to movie release is a long one and before sets are modeled and textured and characters are modeled, rigged and animated, the concept work is done. This concept work is not seen in the final movie release but it is the guide for the look of the entire film. Design, color and lighting are all fleshed out in the concert art. "The Art of Ratatouille" showcases some spectacularly beautiful drawings, paintings and sculptures. It is interesting to see which concepts developed into the final movie and which fell by the wayside. And, or course, the art can also be appreciated simply for what it is. A stunningly, beautiful book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent artistic book.......2007-08-24

Very good book for people who are looking for tips in the hand draw cartoon character area. The different position of the mouse, the correct way you can draw a character make the book a very valuable tool. It is really bad that there is not much information in the 3d area and I myself bought this book much more to find 3d tips.

4 out of 5 stars Pixar succeeds once again........2007-08-08

Ratatouille was one of Pixar's most finely made movies, and the art book showed the painstaking hard work that was put into it. Watch the development of the characters, lighting tests, Brad Bird's words reflecting the movie, and dozens of talented artists' sketches and paintings that made this movie what it is. The real treat for me was Dan Lee's art along with the few storyboards that really lifted my spirit.

Rest in Peace, Dan Lee.
Pixar lost a fantastic artist.

5 out of 5 stars Haute Cusine Eye Candy.......2007-08-06

A magical depiction of Paris, cusine and rodents. The array of sketches, concept paintings, reference art and character studies is wonderful. I'd say exceptional, but I've got other "art of" books about Pixar films and they are all universally excellent. The book is both a delightful celebration of the movie and a charming book even if you haven't seen the movie.

Book Description

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky, Candida H fer, Thomas Ruff, J rge Sasse, Thomas Struth, Olafur Eliasson, Roni Horn, Gabriel Orozco, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Matthew Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Anna Gaskell, Sam Taylor-Wood, Oliver Boberg, James Casebere, Thomas Demand, Vanessa Beecroft, Wolfgang Tillmans, Patty Chang, Trisha Donnelly, Stan Douglas, Pierre Huyghe, William Kentridge, Steve McQueen, Shirin Neshat, John Pilson and Gillian Wearing.

4 out of 5 stars Essays & Photography Great, But Hard to Appreciate Videos.......2004-02-21

This book accompanies a 2003-2004 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It begins with 30 pages of essays: "Introduction," "Picturing Movement, Past and Present," and "Art Photography after Photography." These essays do an excellent job of placing the exhibition in context. In addition, they mention works in a smaller 2002-2003 version of the exhibition in New York, which included some artists (e.g., Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, and Robert Smithson) not represented in the Bilbao exhibition.

The body of the book ("Catalogue Entries") consists of text about and photographs or video stills by 50 artists in alphabetical order (Marina Abramovic through Jane and Louise Wilson). Each of the artists is given up to one page of text. For most of the artists there is only one page of images, but Francis Alys, Matthew Barney, Miles Coolidge, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Mariko Mori, Aika Noguchi, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotte Rist, Michal Rovner, Thomas Struth, Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker have at least three pages. Some works by Dijkstra, Gaskell, Goldin, Gursky, Anthony Hernandez, Manglano-Ovalle, Mori, Orozco, Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Taylor-Wood, and Tillmans are not reproduced in the book but were in the exhibition (per the list on pages 205-216). Virtually all of the works are dated 1990-2002; some images of Goldin's were taken in the 1970s and 1980s but were published later. For each artist, 2-4 "selected readings" are listed in the back of the book.

The photography is mostly great, but the book does not really do the videos justice for a couple reasons. First, there are not enough stills to give the reader a good idea of the course of each video. I would have preferred a larger number of smaller-sized stills. Second, the one-page-of-text limit for each video artist gives the same amount of space for the massive Cremaster series by Barney as for a three-minute video by Patty Chang. You'll have to travel to Spain to fully appreciate the videos, but meanwhile buy the book from Amazon.com!

New Lower Price No artist has had a greater influence in imagining and realizing the artistic potential of video and television than Nam June Paik. Through a vast array of installations, videotapes, global television productions, films and performances, Paik has reshaped our perceptions of the temporal image in contemporary art. The Worlds of Nam June Paik is a celebration of the moving image and an appreciation of Paik's impact on the art of the late 20th century. The full range of Paik's singular achievement is represented--from his early 1960s performance pieces through his videotapes, installations, megatrons and celebrated robot portraits--including his recent, spectacular laser-projection installations in the rotunda of Frank Lloyd Wright's Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In an informative and personal essay, John G. Hanhardt, a longtime supporter of Paik's work, provides an overview of the artist's career while focusing on his important place in the history of the moving image. Also included are a selected exhibition and performance history as well as a selected bibliography.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Succeeds in capturing the gamut of Paik's creations.......2001-02-21

Nam June Paik accompanies the first American retrospective of the Korean multi-media artist's work since 1982, bringing together the major works which define his many artistic contributions. While this was published to accompany an exhibition, it stands well on its own as a gathering of 300 illustrations and an essay, accompanying text descriptions of Paik and his works. It's a special challenge to bring multimedia works to life in print: this succeeds in capturing the gamut of Paik's creations.

                  Book Description

Postcolonialism has attracted a large amount of interest in cultural theory, but the adjacent area of multiculturalism has not been scrutinized to quite the same extent. In this innovative new book, Sneja Gunew sets out to interrogate the ways in which the transnational discourse of multiculturalism may be related to the politics of race and indignity, grounding her discussion in a variety of national settings and a variety of literary, autobiographical and theoretical texts. Using examples from marginal sites -- the "settler societies" of Australia and Canada -- to cast light on the globally dominant discourses of the U.S. and the U.K., Gunew analyzes the political ambiguities and the pitfalls involved in a discourse of multiculturalism haunted by the opposing specters of balkanization and assimilation.

                            Book Description

The Perl Pocket Reference is an invaluable reference for those who find themselves frequently searching for a quick answer to a question or reminder of a syntax rule. This handy, well-organized quick reference condenses stacks of Perl documentation down to the most essential at-your-fingertips facts. For ease-of-use, convenience, and price, this little reference is the first place Perl programmers look when they need an answer quickly. The Perl Pocket Referenc provides a complete overview of the Perl programming language, all packed into a convenient, carry-around booklet. It is updated for Perl 5.8, and covers a summary of Perl syntax rules, a complete list of operators, built-in functions, and standard library modules, all with brief descriptions. Also included are the newest Perl features, such as enhanced regular expressions, multithreading, the Perl compiler, and Unicode support. The Perl Pocket Reference, 4th Edition, is the perfect companion to the authoritative books on Perl published by O'Reilly & Associates: Programming Perl, Learning Perl, and the Perl Cookbook. This pocket reference will never make it to the bookshelf--dog-eared and well worn, it will remain within arms reach of the keyboard or tucked in a back pocket, where it will be referred to on a daily basis.

Perl Pocket Reference only gives lists and tables. No explanation of how to use the various functions, variables, etc. Definitely not for new-comers.

I was very disappointed by this pocket reference. I was expecting something more like the very high quality "Python Pocket Reference", which manages to give complete description of the language, all functions, standard modules, etc, ALONG WITH EXAMPLES FOR EACH; The Python Pocket Reference is able to be used as a standalone reference. This is definitely not true for the Perl Pocket Reference; You will need other books to make this pocket reference make sense... what a pain!

Gerald W. Irmler writes in his review "I also have two very large Perl books that are also almost useless, so maybe it's a Perl problem." Well yes, Perl is not an easy language, but I suspect that the main problem here is an Irmler problem. This book does a very good job of doing what it intends to. Another clue that Irmler is lacking a clue is the baffling comment that "The author seemed more interested in being clever and funny, then (sic) imparting information." Huh? The book is comprised entirely of very succinct facts about the language. There is no style here to speak of, due to the nature of the book.

I rate this book 5 stars, Irmler -5 stars.

Of the many O'Reilly books that I have purchased,
this is the first one that was really poor.
I'd give it -5 stars, but the lowest you allow is 1.
The author seemed more interested in being clever
                            and funny, then imparting information.

However, I also have two very large Perl books
that are also almost useless, so maybe it's
                            a Perl problem.

"Perl Pocket Reference" has the dense information content of "Perl in a nutshell" with extra readability and decreased size. However, in it's subject matter it more closely resembles "programming perl" (aka: camel), because it only covers the language itself. I own all three of these books, and even when they are all within arms reach, I still use this pocket reference more than the other two books, for two reasons:

1)As a beginner (in Perl), many of my questions can be answered with a small book such as "Perl Pocket Reference".
2)I don't have to sift through a lot of extraneous information to get answers quickly.

This pocket reference is no substitute for the Camel, (or for a more complete reference such as "Perl in a nutshell") but it's a great solution for
                            -finding succinct answers quickly
-reminding yourself of the basics of some feature that you don't use much
-serving as a beginner's reference, or
-bringing to an open-book exam. ;-)

Buy this book if you have another perl book and you want to get answers more efficiently.
