Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft Empire

Book Description
The Making of Microsoft reveals the inside story of one of the most successful American companies of the microcomputer revolution.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reading about Microsoft's early culture.......2005-01-02
I've read this book 3 times already in the past years. One of the authors is european, and the books gives real insight on the first era of Microsoft. Buy it, you won't be dissapointed. The technical level required to read this is close to zero. It's a great story.
a stitch in time.......2001-11-24
This book is easy to understand. It gives a view of what happened at a critical time with a new technology. (1980 - 1990) It has a timeline and explains all those acronyms you hear but never knew what they were. Here a man was clearly building an empire and it was not simple or easy. You can see how just a small thing affected all our lives. It continues today.

Synopsis.......2007-07-09
First published in 1987. Brussels 1986 was a ground breaking event in many respects. It was Kasparov's first tournament after his gruelling series of marathons against Anatoly Karpov for the world title, and it was the first major tournament televised by the BBC and containing commentary by the players themselves. The majority of the notes are by Grandmaster Ray Keene but readers will also find analysis by Kasparov and others of the greats involved, including Nigel Short and Viktor Korchnoi.
This event contains Short's sensational first-ever win against Kasparov which gave notice that Nigel would go on to become a world title challenger himself. Ultimately Kasparov blew away the field and won a double round event by a substantial margin. The games are razor sharp - indeed double edged - and Kasparov's cliff-hanging battle with Korchnoi - recreated blow by blow for television - has to be seen to be believed!

Very Informative.......2007-05-17
I ordered this book to learn more about MS Office. I received this book within 5 days and it is very helpful and very easy to understand.
Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies.......2005-07-01
The book (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies)is like new. I could hardly believe when I open the package and saw the book. The speed at when it reaches me was also excellent. I would encourage anyone to conduct business it them.
Really for "Dummies".......2004-12-03
As others have said, this book is very very basic--perhaps because it attempts to cover all the components of the Office 2000 suite in less than 500 pages. If you have even basic familiarity with the program you're using, it won't be much help. For example, I turned to this book to see if I could discover some of the more sophisticated features of Outlook email, and was disappointed. It's pitched to the "how to send a message" crowd. But, I also am trying Excel for the first time, and it helped a lot just to be able to easily find how to enter a basic formula. Bottom line is, once you start using a program regularly you'll graduate from this manual pretty quickly.
Turned out to be less than useful.......2003-11-27
I got this book when I entered the working world out of university- aside from providing a few very basic tips on how to format printing and what not, there is not much to this book that is practically useful.
I wanted something that would pick up where I left off in college and help me make usable spreadsheets with guides to the various equations and what not- alas, there is very little here.
This book is only for total beginners- you will soon outgrow this book and wish you had something that went a bit farther in depth and was of more use as a reference guide.
Microsoft Office 2000.......2003-09-08

ASIN: 0764504444 |
Book Description
Being a normal human being, you probably have work to do. In fact, you may have lots of work piled precariously around your office or even stretching onto the Internet. Someone, possibly your boss, suggested that Access 2000 may help you get more done in less time, eliminate the piles, and generally make the safety inspector happy.
But if you’re confused instead of organized, befuddled instead of productive, or just completely lost on the whole database thing, Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies is the book for you.
You don't need to be a nerd to get the most out of Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies. If you know the basics of Windows 95, 98, or NT (whichever one you use) and have a desire to work with databases, you're ready to go. Everything you need to know is right here, just waiting for you to read it.
Each part of Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies covers a general topic of Access 2000. Right off the bat, this book answers the lyrical question “It’s a data-what?” By starting with an overview of both database concepts in general and Access 2000 in particular, this book provides the information you need to make sense of the whole database concept. You'll also gain insight into
- Solving problems with Access 2000
- Designing, building, using, changing, and generally coexisting in the same room with Access 2000 tables
- Using the Access 200 queries to unearth the answers you know are hiding somewhere in your data
- Committing your database to paper
- Doing stuff faster and seeking assistance from the wizards. You'll even venture into a bit of programming
Now nothing’s left to hold you back from the wonders of Access 2000. Cleave tightly to Access 2000 For Windows For Dummies, consign the Microsoft manuals to a suitable dark hole, and dive into Access 2000.
Bon Voyage!

Not enough info..........2006-08-29
I bought this book about a couple of months ago and I need an easier way to do my reports and faster. They did not show anything until I went online and found "parameters", did not have anything about "parameters", in the book. Book is good for basic use.
This Book Is An Absolute Waste Of Time To Read!!!.......2002-12-12
This book will give you boring definitions, but it doesn't really go into anything why I needed to learn how to do. There are way to many "Ask someone who is computer literate to help you with this." There was one explanation that said the topic is too difficult to explain and I should trade some "homemade cookies" to someone that will show me how to fix the problem. I'm not kidding look it up for yourself if you don't believe me. I don't know what audience this book is for but it seems to me that it was written for computer illerate people that will not get any answers anyway. Its more like "This stuff is too tough for you to learn, tell you what go have a cookie." I like to tell the author to go do something else...
Not worth it.......2002-05-08
...My user level: beginner to intermediate (I already know how to build basic tables, forms, queries, trying to step up into the world of more complex relationships, reports, etc). I was pretty disappointed with this book: cut out the "for dummies" fluff and what's left are simple instructions on how to use the built in wizards. When I looked for example, for information on form controls in the index, I found they weren't even referenced. The front cover "cheat sheet" is just a listing of telephone and online tech support phone numbers (which you will end up shelling out $$ to call) and web addresses.
Kaufeld spends way too much time trying to make jokiness look like friendly instruction. Then, in place of real instruction, he constantly tells users to go get help from their company tech guy/gal. Wait a minute - I thought I bought this book so I could learn on my own! Apparently, he didn't envision Access users who work outside of a large corporation with an IT department.
Wonderful Introductory Book.......2002-03-09
I am completely new to Access 2000 and this book was just what I needed. It was both a good read (yes, I read it cover to cover) and informative. I had tryed other, more advanced Access books, but discovered that I was not yet at a level to fully understand them. I needed the basic level that "... For Dummies" books provide. Although the author covers how to use the Wizards, which are for the most part self-explanitory, he also delves into how to do everything from tables to queries to reports in design view. I'm a do-it-myselfer, so I prefer design view, but needed a book that would step me though the process. It is well organized and I plan on buying Access 2002 (XP) for Windows for Dummies when it hits the shelves so I can get a consise look at the new features and how to use them. If you're a Douglas Adams fan (especially Hitch hiker's Guide to the Galaxy), you'll like the title of Part III and the quips that are spattered throughout that section. Happy reading and good luck learning your way through a new program!
even dummies want access...........2002-01-29
Up until now, I had never felt like a dummy for buying a "-for dummies" book. Up until now. Among the insipid and mildly insulting jokes I found just enough in this book to figure out what I already knew or could develop on my own using Access' own wizard. The chapters aren't especially helpful; for example, the section on creating forms leaves so much unexplored in this lovely database. In this book, if you come up against an interesting problem, well, you're supposed to find your company's IT nerd and beg. Perhaps that's it: if I make enough to buy the book, reward me as I have rewarded you, Kaufeld. There is a difference between being a dummy and being an innocent. Ah, well, fortunately, I discovered Anderson's "Complete Access Reference" the next week and got a great used copy on Amazon....
Book Description
Instants Access! With this unbeatable A-to-Z reference, you can zoom in on any topic and get just the information you need to solve a problem or perform an operation. From creating a new field to setting up shared files, you get clear, succinct directions on how to make the most of every Access feature immediately !
Customer Reviews:
Access 200 - for dummies.......2001-08-06
Book was well organized, and delivered promptly.
However, was disappointed in that the book did not address many areas of interest for me, such as setting up security, protecting against errant/accidental data entry into exisitng records.
Book would be useful to user with very little experience.
Book for my Family.......2000-06-23
My family wanted to try out the different software on thier new computer. They had a sparked interest in Access. I use Access at work on a dily bases, so after many nights of phone calls I bought my parents this book. My parents, who have never used Access, are able to create tables, queries, reports and forms with ease. All I have to worry about now is them applying for my job.

"A yellow cover slapped on a lukewarm regurgitation of common Office tasks."
The Dummies Quick Reference series is the only good Dummies series knockoff, and with good reason: The books fill a necessary void. They look and smell like Dummies books, but they contain concentrated bits of how-to information. At least that's what the covers promise.
The most revealing thing about this book is that it's "revised" by Bjoern-Erik Hartsfvang, which is the most interesting name I've typed this year. (Well, next to Sanky Winkervan.) The book doesn't exactly explain what was revised, so I was eager to determine whether any of Doug Lowe's familiar and clever writing snuck through Hartsfvang's revision. Apparently, and to my regret, none of it did.
Honestly, there's nothing obscenely wrong with this book. It documents most of the major things you can do with the popular Office 2000 components: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Publisher. There's a general introduction chapter that explains many of the common Office activities. Then the book breaks out into chapters covering each Office application. Still there's nothing special. It's just average information bobbing in a sea of mediocrity.
The topics aren't covered in real depth, which makes sense given the book's teensy size. There are step-by-step lists, but no inside hints, tips, or tricks. Often a table is presented as a solution without a real explanation of what the problem is. So, this book is more of a regurgitated manual than the kind of information I would expect to find. Despite the promise of Doug Lowe's name, this book is a disappointment. --Dan Gookin
