Book Description

Screenwriting With a Conscience: Ethics for Screenwriters is for screenwriters who care deeply about what they write; who are aware that movie images matter and can influence audiences; and who want to create meaningful screenplays that make powerful statements while entertaining and winning over audiences. A user-friendly guide to ethical screenwriting, this book makes the case that social responsibility is endemic to public art while it emphatically champions First Amendment rights and condemns censorship.

In this dynamic and practical volume, author Marilyn Beker provides methods for self-assessment of values, ideas, and ethical stances, and demonstrates the application of these values to the development of plot, character, and dialogue. Screenwriters are introduced to ethical decision making models and shown--through specific film examples--how they can be utilized in plot and character development. In addition, specific techniques and exercises are supplied to help screenwriters determine the difference between "good" and "evil," to write realistic and compelling characters based on this determination, and to present "messages" and write dialogue powerfully without preaching. This book also puts forth a livable work philosophy for dealing with the ethics of the screenwriting business, and presents a viable personal philosophy for surviving in the screenwriting world.

Screenwriting With a Conscience: Ethics for Screenwriters is an indispensible, dynamic guide for the ethics-conscious screenwriter. It is intended for screenwriters at the student and professional level, and is appropriate for beginning to graduate screenwriting courses in film and English programs, and for film courses dealing with Ethics in the Media.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of a Writer.......2004-03-10

There are so many reasons to become a writer. There are perhaps fewer reasons to become a screenwriter. Obiously one thinks one has something important to say.

Ms. Beker cuts to the quick in a fun almost mystical zen-like way. She does not assume that just because you think you have something to say that you know what it is you are really saying. Here's where the obvious becomes not so obvious.

Especially when 'directing' the action-image of the message that you are relating through your screenplay, the obvious can become completely obscured.

The exercises she takes you through to clarify your thoughts and feelings about your message add depth to the writing process.

The book is a valuable tool for the student or the seasoned writer.

There is a remarkable sense of solidity when your feet meet the ground of your conscience.

      Book Description

Life as Theater has deservedly attained the status of a landmark work. As the first book to explore systematically the material and subject matter of social psychology from the dramatul&ical viewpoint, the earlier edition has been widely used and quoted, and has sparked ferment and debate in fields as diverse as sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, speech communication, and formal theater studies. Aldine de Gruyter is proud to offer this major revision and updated edition. Nearly two-thirds of the selections are new and all feature individual introductions that provide dramaturgical perspective and reflect the latest thinking and work being done within this point of view. This book's sophistication will appeal to the scholar, and its clarity and conciseness to the student. Like its predecessor, it is designed to serve as a primary text or supplementary reader in classes.

Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is a powerful development technology for customizing desktop applications and integrating them with existing data and systems, enabling customers to buy off-the-shelf software and customize it to meet their specific needs. This is a big cost-saving solution for most business who cannot afford to build programs from scratch. There are an estimated 65 million Excel users. Many are Excel power users, but few have figured out how to effectively use Excel VBA. This book teaches the skills necessary to use Microsoft VBA to customize the Excel spreadsheet. No prior programming knowledge is assumed. It takes a reader who has, perhaps, built a couple of macros from a standing start to a complete knowledge of the VBA language. Topics covered include: event programming, user forms, charts, pivot tables, Web queries, multi-dimensional arrays, classes, records, and collections, and more!

The book is useful. The worksheets downloaded from the Internet are also very clear.
Sometimes you expect more explanations on statements which use new features not connected with the subject being reviewed.
I think that I shall not need to purchase any other book on this subject.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive! A wealth of key information and examples.......2006-10-04

I found this book to be one of the best references for Excel VBA development. The book is easy to understand and follow. Contains a large amount of examples that can be easily understood. Addresses many critical aspects of excel VBA development. Not too much was spent on forms/GUI development so you will have to look elsewhere if you into that. Also addresses interfacing Excel to databases using ADO as well as API programming which is critical for superusers to extend the power of excel without the limitation of data storage. Overall, the authors have a superb job and I consider this book to be an essential of my Excel VBA library!

                    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disjointed.......2006-06-25

The first few chapters were a reasonable introduction to VBA for Excel, but after that, the examples, while being quite relevant and useful, seemed somewhat random, and did not strike me as being well supported by the text.

I think that those who are looking for an abundance of code examples will be reasonably happy. The book is full of code handling tasks that most Excel VBA programmers will need to find solutions to. Those looking for a tutorial, for examples of good coding practice and principles, and an understanding of the underlying principles of VBA in the Excel environment, should probably look elsewhere.

Walkenbach's Power Programming is excellent. VBA for Modelers, by Albright, is a book that does a great job of combining theory and practical code examples for me. For people looking for advanced material, Excel with VBA & .NET by Jeff Webb, and Professional Excel Developement by Bullen, Bovey and Green are very good.

                    5 out of 5 stars My Review - JMay.......2007-02-19

This is absolutely the best overall book I have purchased and read when it comes to getting a good overall understanding of Excel VBA Programming.

                    I have bought appoxiamately 12 to 15 books on Excel and 7 or 8 on strictly programming. This is the Best. It is not a Techical reference type like my my Wrox Excel 2002 VBA, nor is it as expansive as my MO Excel 2003 Programming (Inside & Out) or VBA 2003 Power Programming by Walkenbach;

I am glad I got it --- it is written at a perfect learning level.

                    Jim May

                    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-01-23

The best book I have found on Excel VBA. Pure in depth explanation, no silly anecdotes, and plenty of examples. plus half the price of others! Shepherd takes 40 pages to deal with the object model at the heart of VBA programming (other books try to do this in 5 pages) and includes examples of how to automate other Office applications from Excel. This book also covers the more advanced topics like charts, linking to databases, class modules, and API (Application Programming Interface) calls. Ever tried to play a sound file from an Excel macro? VBA has no command to do this, but Shepherd shows the way. If you want to learn VBA this is the one.

                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-01-13

I have tried some of the macros and find that they are poorly constructed, not at all professionally coded and trivial in the extreme. So much for the "real world" situations. No wonder there is no CD! Buyers would be much better off with Chris Allbright's Modellers book which not only has a CD but also provides really useful programs in stats, finance, quant etc.

5 out of 5 stars Get going quickly!.......2005-07-08

VBA is a topic that has not yet made it into the curriculum of too many CS courses, at least not at my school. The focus tends to be on formal ideas, taught in Java and C++. But when it comes time to get a job one often needs to learn the VB editor/compiler and VBA overnight. VBA is another child of the OOP revolution, but it can easily be used without extra baggage like UML diagrams. It is not hard to learn, but one still has to learn it.
Excel is by far the most popular place to implement the built in VBA language in Office. This makes this book a good starting point, and since it is done in 300 pages rather than the typical 1200 page monstrosity it is quickly digestable.
The book assumes modest familiarity with programming concepts. A CS minor looking for a job in business should be able to handle it easily.

                    5 out of 5 stars Warmly recommended.......2004-10-31

I recommend this book without hesitation. I bought this as a complete beginner and it has shown me in easy steps how to write effective VBA code. Plenty of worked examples to follow and copy in - I liked this because it gave me something to build on and showed very effectively how the structure of the code worked. Everything is explained well and the chapter structure has been carefully constructed so that it all follows on from each other. The examples have something for everyone and go from simple stuff like code to transpose a selected range of cells in one click to code to auto total rows and columns of a selected matrix of numbers in one click. Very useful on a spreadsheet.

Although I've developed macros for years in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, and PowerPoint, this book still gave me new information and ways to accomplish tasks. The book is well worth the time to wander through. The only suggestion I have is that unless things have changed, PowerPoint has to dynamically create and assign macros to the buttons via the Auto_Open subroutine. An Add-In is created and loaded. This wonderfulness might have been briefly explained. But maybe the assumption is that folks know this already. I'm speaking from the perspective of a person who is new to PowerPoint macros.

You are an expert in Excel, but the macro recorder doesn’t work and you can’t make heads or tails out of the recorded code. If this is you, buy this book. Macros that you record today might work today but not tomorrow. Recorded macros might handle a dataset with 14 records but not one with 12 or 16 records. These are all common problems with the macro recorder that unfortunately cause too many Excel gurus to turn away from writing macros. This book shows you why the macro recorder fails and the steps needed to convert recorded code into code that will work every day with every dataset. The book assumes that you know Excel well, but there is no need for prior programming experience. This book describes everything you could conceivably need to know to automate reports and design applications in Excel VBA. Whether you want to automate reports for your office or design full-blown applications for others, this book is for you.
