The most practically perfect book a reading teacher can have.......2006-07-17
I have taught English and Reading in the middle and high school for twelve years, and in that time I have been a voracious consumer of professional books in those subject areas.
Helping kids become lifelong readers has always been my primary goal, and people like Linda Rief, Nancie Atwell, and Janet Allen have all helped with inspiring stories about their successes with children and classroom applications.
This book is different. If you are not in the market for another description of the perfect reading workshop classroom with resources and children you will probably never have or teach, but you need real ways to help get books into kids' hands, this is the book for you.
Filled with practical suggestions (as well as wonderfully inspirational "reader autobiographies" and statements from authors about why they write YA Lit), this is the book that you keep on your shelf in your room because you will USE it, not because you want to have the "right titles" visible to your colleagues.
She provides practical methods for matching the kid and the book, from techniques to learn about your students to EXTENSIVE book lists organized into multiple (again: USEFUL) categories.
My favorite section (apart from the book lists) was the last section of the book, in which she discusses ways to entice the kids into reading the books -- "Read and Tease" is a great, effective strategy, and her discussion of the mechanics of booktalking is the best one I have read.
If you teach children, run a media center, or have a reluctant reader or two in your own home, this book is a sound investment in their futures as readers.
Making the Match.......2006-07-16
Making the Match should be required reading for every reading teacher!! Helping students make choices about their free reading material can be one of the most challenging jobs a reading teacher faces. Lesesne's book is full of great ideas written in an easy to read format. She really understands the challenges teachers and students alike face in making appropriate reading matches. The appendix alone is worth the cost of the book!!
The magic of Teri Lesesne.......2005-05-26
Sam Houston State University Library Science Professor Teri Lesesne is a legend in her professional universe. She has a magic -- a knowing -- when it comes to literature for teens. That magic makes her latest book, MAKING THE MATCH: THE RIGHT BOOK FOR THE RIGHT READER AT THE RIGHT TIME an essential for any professional educator serious about making literacy a priority on and off the job. It is a resource well worth the fiscal investment, but more to the point, it's a work well worth your time. Years of practical experience and interaction with other experts shine with each passage. And as is always the case, Lesesne is a pleasure to read thanks to her warm but professional tone.
Book Description
Since its launch in 1974 by cultural outlaw and international drug smuggler Thomas King Forçade, High Times magazine has served as a preeminent showcase of the American counterculture. Conceived to “bring a new consciousness into the media,” the magazine’s first issue sold 25,000 copies. Although the past 30 years have spanned three editorial reigns, High Times has remained committed to its sharp defense of free speech, constitutional rights and the freedom of the individual. The High Times Reader will chronicle the evolution of American counterculture over the past three decades, offering a unique historical perspective on the current tendencies toward suppressing American civil liberties. Contributions will include Timothy Leary’s space-travel manifesto Terra II from the magazine’s inaugural issue, articles by Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Ron Rosenbaum, Legs McNeil and Paul Krassner—who wrote a column entitled “Brain Damage Report”—interviews with Johnny Rotten, Larry David, and an 8-page photo insert of the most infamous sexy High Times centerfolds, along with some of their more memorable covers.
Customer Reviews:
High Times had articles?!.......2006-03-02
As it turns out High Times is (or at least was) more than an assortment of budshots and hydro ads.
This book is a FASCINATING collection of articles, essays, and interviews detailing the impact and spread of pscyotropic substances upon contemporary culture and it's figures. This book is a must for anyone wanting an intimate look at how mind altering substances made their way into popular society. This book names names left and right. The most interesting article is a history of how LSD and cannabis became popular in a very micro sense. The article doesn't just talk about Albert Hoffman's bike ride, it tells the story of how LSD made it's way from Sandoz, how a guy named Owlsey became the prime producer for all of the acid consumers in the mid 60s, the celebrities he shared it with, the celebrities those celebrities shared it with, and the celebrities those celebrities shared it with. Wanna know who turned on the Beatles? Wanna read about all the coke politicians did? Wanna read about Hunter S Thompson? Abbie Hoffman? Taking acid in Golden Gate Park? Wanna read about Bob Marley talking about his acid tester and how hard it is to find good bud? Wanna read about how JFK got his weed? Wanna read about the dark side of Walt Disney? Wanna read about taking DMT in the jungle with shamans? These are just the topics my stoner brain can remember, there were many more (I lost the book months ago, but I'm buying another).
The High Times reader is a valuable book because it doesn't present drug culture in a mythical fashion. There is a very authentic quality to it. The writing was done by the counterculture, for the counterculture, during the height of the counterculture, by people who lived the counterculture.
This book provides an intimate look at drugs and the counter-culture that isn't available anywhere else. I cringe to think that most of the information contained within is already forgotten, and as a result of High Times's reputation will probably never be remembered. I thought I knew the history of drugs, but what I knew was the history of drugs as told by The Man. This totally changed my perspective of the last 50 years. I wasn't old enough to experience the countercoulter, and my attempts to understand it didn't paint the whole picture (reading the Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, PiHKAL/TiKHAL, watching The Weathermen Underground, Woodstock), but it was this unsuspecting book, the book I had no hopes for, that eventually put the finishes touches on the canvas of the past bringing it to life.

Jack and Annie return to audio in these fun-filled adventures.
Come along with Jack and Annie as they tour Elizabethan England, roam the mountains of Africa, and hang ten in Hawaii!
Volume 7 includes:
Stage Fright on a Summer Night
Jack and Annie are whisked back to Elizabethan England where they meet the Bard of Avon himself, William Shakespeare, and luckily for them he is desperate for two small actors for his latest play! A wonderful adventure as well as the perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young readers.
Good Morning, Gorillas
The Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie off to the mountains of Africa. There they run into a huge mountain gorilla! At first they don’t know whether they should shake hands or turn tail. But the ominous-looking creature turns out to be surprisingly gentle. Not only that, the gorilla may be able to help them learn their next bit of magic, which Morgan has challenged them to do.
Thanksgiving on Thursday
The Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie back to the eve of the first Thanksgiving. There they meet the Pilgrims as well as Squanto, a Native American who helped them. The story offers an age-appropriate, in-depth picture of what life was really like for early settlers, as well as the usual Magic Tree House adventure and excitement.
High Tide in Hawaii
When the Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie off to Hawaii it’s for more than a vacation—they’re in search of a fourth kind of magic for Morgan! On the way they help an island community survive a tidal wave and, of course, take some time out to surf! Ultimately, they discover that the magic that they have found in this set of four books are everyday magics: the magic of the arts, the magic of the natural world, the magic of community; and the magic of fun.

my child loved it.......2007-09-24
I purchased the Magic Tree House audio set because my four-year-old daughter is always asking me to tell her stories. Sometimes, I just can't get my imagination going, so I thought this would fill in my blank moments. And, in fact, it has done a wonderful job of it. We play them in the car while driving around. They really captivate my daughter. The subject matter is very interesting to children: dinosaurs, mummies, castles, pirates. The stories increased her interest in these areas.
The CDs have also given me new ideas for stories--using the characters from Magic Tree House--and in other ways stimulated creative interaction between us. They have increased her vocabulary as well.
It is also a great way to motivate her to get in the car when we had to leave: "Come on, let's go hear a story!", I say.
I also love the fact that they are not the Disney-fied, commercialized versions of stories. I intend to purchase all of Osbourne's Magic Tree House CD sets.
My one comment toward improvement would be to put each story on its own CD. This set has four stories on 3 CDs, which is not quite as convenient when wanting to locate/isolate a particular story.
Basics for Time Travel.......2005-04-27
When I was eight I read these books. I am now 12 and in 6th grade and i say these books are great.I recomend these for kids instresed in science or the world.I am currenly reading Stephen Hawking's " A breif History of time" which is a great and understandable book for anyone. These books inspied me to be a Theoretical Quantum physicist. it got me into the fasinating subject of time travel and Unifeild Feild theory. The boottm line is these books are filles with adventure and fun.
My Review of Ghost Town at Sundown.......2002-03-12
Since I like scary stories, I really, really liked this one. The best part was when they heard a ghost playing the piano. The ghost's name is Lonesome Luke.
Fins Up for Dolphins at Daybreak.......2001-10-21
My name is Grant. I am in third grade. Last week I read DOLPHINS AT DAYBREAK because it looked like a really exciting book. DOLPHINS is my favorite Magic Treehouse book so far. I have already read VIKING SHIPS AT SUNRISE and CIVIL WAR ON SUNDAY. I would give all of the Magic Treehouse books I have read 5 stars, but I like DOLPHINS best because I love dolphins and the submarine adventure was really exciting!!!
Here's a bit of what happened: Annie was curious about the mini-submarine and talked Jack into exploring it. Inside the sub Annie pushed the wrong button and it started to go down to the bottom of the sea. They saw an Octopus, which started to grab the submarine...they also saw a hammerhead shark...
That's all I will tell you or it will spoil the story for you.
Night of the Ninjas.......2001-10-11
Night of the Ninjas is easy to read with short chapters and pictures. This book can hold the interest of children from 8 on up. The characters are fun and children can relate to them. The characters are a brother and sister, so this book will be of interest to either boys or girls. I have found that the Magic Tree House Books make children want to learn more about history.

Awesome spellbook.......2005-01-21
It has a tonne of new spells for druids and clerics. Some of the spells are a little off colour but quite useful (I'm not really British, I just decided to try British spelling). For instance, Breeze protects you against hot weather, Resist Water will help keep you waterproof, and Dig allows you to burrow underground. These are functional spells, but there are also spells that are just weird. Bandit's Lament causes someone to lose body parts if they commit crimes, Surface keeps objects from sinking in water, and Awaken Element is oddest of all as it allows a ball of fire to become sentient. All in all very interesting spells, which I plan to add to a druid or cleric I play as.

Customer Reviews:
Lousy.......2006-05-12
It's rare I give a book such low marks, but this one really shows what a lousy book is like. This simplistic text doesn't go into very much detail on any topics, leaving all but the greenest novice looking elsewhere for assistance. This book serves only to annoy me when I look for answers because it has none to give.
The cover is completely deceptive; the author and illustrators have no such talent with 3dsMax. The examples inside are meaningless and tacky, showing only a cursory knowledge of the program itself. This book feels like it was written in haste.
I would not purchase this again, given the chance. Not for the 50 dollars it sold for. Not for the 20 dollars it sells for now. Not for 45 cents. It's just not worth it.
Response to review.......2006-04-05
As someone who worked on the editorial side of this book, I was surprised to read in a review that files weren't available. I checked courseptr.com, downloaded the files, and opened many of them and they worked perfectly, so I'm not sure what that particular reviewer is talking about. If you have an earlier version of 3ds Max (6 or 7), you can't use the "regular" files because 3ds Max 6 and 7 can't open 3ds Max 8 files. However, you can use the separate download file called "Data Files for Versions 6 and 7 of 3ds Max."
Also, both old features and features new to 3ds Max 8 are covered at the right level for a beginner-for example, hair and fur (new to 3ds Max 8) are covered in Chapter 10. In Release 6 or 7 you can't do those paricular tutorials because the hair and fur features didn't exist in those releases, but the book says "Most material compatible with versions 6 and 7 of 3ds Max" right on the cover.
I hope this helps to clear up any confusion about files.
Very poor! Save your Money!!!.......2006-02-01
- The files for the tutorials are not available online, I tried many times until I gave up.
- The book covers at a very high level the various areas of 3D modeling with 3D Studio Max but never goes in depth on any of the subjects. As a result by the end of the book I have clicked on many many buttons of 3DS Max but I have not acquired the skills to build a 3D scene.
- In my opinion, there is too much blablabla in between the tutorials and not enough in-depth hands on tutorial.
- The least you would expect from reading such a book is to be self-sufficient in at least some of 3D Studio Max areas.
no good as a max 8 guide.......2006-01-20
Like a lot of publishers, this one has just repackaged an old max guide as a max 8 one. There is just nothing on the features new to max 8 -- cloth, hair and fur, mental ray, etc. At best this is just deceptive marketing.
The book is still good as a general intro to 3ds max, but I have found New Riders 3ds max fundamentals better.
Autodesk 3ds Max 8 Revealed (Revealed) .......2006-01-15
This book is very simplistic and it comes with no files. The website that contains the necessary file is slow. And the files are corrupt. I tried three times to download the files and each time they are unreadable.
Save your money and don't buy this book.
