        Book Description

In Ecology without Nature, Timothy Morton argues that the chief stumbling block to environmental thinking is the image of nature itself. Ecological writers propose a new worldview, but their very zeal to preserve the natural world leads them away from the "nature" they revere. The problem is a symptom of the ecological catastrophe in which we are living. Morton sets out a seeming paradox: to have a properly ecological view, we must relinquish the idea of nature once and for all.

Ecology without Nature investigates our ecological assumptions in a way that is provocative and deeply engaging. Ranging widely in eighteenth-century through contemporary philosophy, culture, and history, he explores the value of art in imagining environmental projects for the future. Morton develops a fresh vocabulary for reading "environmentality" in artistic form as well as content, and traces the contexts of ecological constructs through the history of capitalism. From John Clare to John Cage, from Kierkegaard to Kristeva, from The Lord of the Rings to electronic life forms, Ecology without Nature widens our view of ecological criticism, and deepens our understanding of ecology itself. Instead of trying to use an idea of nature to heal what society has damaged, Morton sets out a radical new form of ecological criticism: "dark ecology."

        Book Description

What is posthumanism and why does it matter? This book offers an introduction to the ways in which humanism's belief in the natural supremacy of the Family of Man has been called into question at different moments and from different theoretical positions. What is the relationship between posthumanism and technology? Can posthumanism have a politics-postcolonial or feminist? Are postmodernism and poststructuralism posthumanist? What happens when critical theory meets Hollywood cinema? What links posthumanism to science fiction. Posthumanism addresses these and other questions in an attempt to come to terms with one of the most pressing issues facing contemporary society.

I was very impressed with this work. Neil Badmington has brought together a wide variety of excellent essays on the origins and developments in posthumanism, from its basis in liberal humanist thought to the evolution of the cyborg and considerations of disembodiment.
If you are a scholar in postmodernism or current literary, philosophical, and/or culture theory, I would highly recommend this book. It offers a firm grounding in the concepts behind posthumanism and its implications at the dawn of the 21st century.

          Book Description

Alien Chic sets out to provide a cultural history of the alien since the 1950s, asking why our attitudes to aliens have changed from fear to affection, and what this can tell us about how we now see ourselves and others.

The author begins by exploring our relationship with the concept of aliens, primarily through films, including Invaders from Mars, Mars Attacks and Mission to Mars. He then progresses to ideas of humanism and what makes us human, taking in the works of thinkers such as Descartes, Barthes, Freud, and Derrida.

The book then considers the concept of posthumanism in an age in which the lines between what is human and what is non-human are increasingly blurred by advances in science and technology, for example cloning and genetic engineering, and the development of AI and cyborgs. This leads to the question of whether our embracing of all things 'alien' stems from a need to reaffirm ourselves as "human."

Written in a clear and engaging style, Alien Chic is an original and thought-provoking contribution to the study of posthumanism.

5 out of 5 stars Cultural Crit at its best.......2005-02-02

Alien Chic, as a title, is rather `chic' itself, posthumanism and aliens being rather hot topics in the hipster academic (I know, I know, total paradox) circles. In fact, `trashy' pop-culture topics in general, examined through the lens of an often hyper-academic theory, seem to be more prevalent than more traditional academic work. It is far too easy to find hundreds of academic papers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer or X-files, and whatever those shows' merits may be, the excess of critical attention surely hearkens an almost morbid interest in pop artifacts by cultural critics who have finally been given free reign to write about whatever they want. Anyone who thinks that, to borrow a typically overwrought statement of Terry Eagleton's, `Jane Austen is better than Jeffery Archer,' is accused of all sorts of hideous crimes. Good old Marxist that he is, Terry roundly condemns this belief, and, obnoxiously reductive and nostalgic as he may be, Eagleton does have some good points. It does get tiresome reading sundry Lacanian film analyses of beer commercials and episodes of Angel. Even though said essays are not representative of cultural criticism as a discipline, they are hardly in short supply, and enough of them and one almost starts wishing for good old Beowulf and some high-handed cultural imperialism. Almost. In this reviewer's humble opinion, the saving grace of cultural theory is books like this one.

Badmington does indeed examine a great deal of pop-culture, along with Descartes, a wonderful passage from Baudelaire on the joys and travails of hashish use, choice examinations of Althusser, and some of the most wonderfully simple and applicable summaries and uses of Derrida I have ever read. Despite the `chic' title (actually a very insightful reference to Tom Wolfe's concept of `Radical Chic') the difference between this book and a lot of cultural criticism that has flourished recently is that it is not afraid to tackle large issues. It deals with what pop culture means and what that means for us. By framing the discussion around repeated reformulations of Descartes' famous `cogito ergo sum' Badmington makes a powerful case for the relevance of posthumanism. He shows the weaknesses of traditional humanism and its current manifestations in reflexive self-definition: I am not alien therefore I am. Using the vital concept of difference (and differance) he illustrates the very real dangers of reflexive self definition, bringing the argument from the sphere of pop-culture to the sphere of what it means to be human, or posthuman. Relevant, wittily written and thoroughly engaging, this is one of the most thought provoking books of cultural criticism I have read.

Also, it's pretty funny, and that's always a good thing.

            Book Description

Otherness, alterity, the alien-over the course of the past fifty years many of us have based our hopes for more ethical relationships on concepts of difference. Combining philosophy, literary criticism, fiction, autobiography, and real and imagined correspondence, Ann Weinstone proposes that only when we stop ordering the other to be other-whether technological, animal, or simply inanimate-will we truly become posthuman.

Posthumanism has thus far focused nearly exclusively on human-technology relations. Avatar Bodies develops a posthumanist vocabulary for human-to-human relationships that turns our capacities for devotion, personality, and pleasure. Drawing on both the philosophies and practices of Indian Tantra, Weinstone argues for the impossibility of absolute otherness; we are all avatar bodies, consisting of undecidably shared gestures, skills, memories, sensations, beliefs, and affects.

Weinstone calls her book a "tantra"-by which she means a set of instructions for practices aimed at sensitizing the reader to the inherent permeability of self to other, self to world. This tantra for posthumanism elaborates devotional gestures that will expose us to more unfettered contacts and the transformative touch.

Ann Weinstone is assistant professor of literature and new media at Northwestern University and the winner of the 1994 Chelsea Award for Fiction.

            Book Description

In The Souls of Cyberfolk, Thomas Foster traces the transformation of cyberpunk from a literary movement into a multimedia cultural phenomenon. He examines how cyberpunk defined a framework for thinking about the cultural implications of new technologies - a framework flexible enough to incorporate issues of gender, queer sexualities, and ethnic and racial differences as well as developments in nationalist models of citizenship and global economic flows. Beginning with William Gibson's paradigmatic text Neuromancer, and continuing through the works of Maureen McHugh, Melissa Scott, Neal Stephenson, Greg Egan, and Ken MacLeod, Foster measures cyberpunk's reach into social and philosophical movements (the Extropy Institute), commercial art (Hajime Sorayama's gynoids or sexy robot illustrations), comic books (Deathlok), film (Robocop), and music video (from Billy Idol's Cyberpunk album). The central challenge that cyberpunk poses for cultural critics, Foster argues, is to understand what happens when the technological denaturalization of physical embodiment becomes the norm. This question acquires urgency as the focus of his book moves beyond the typical technocultural concerns with gender and sexuality to consider race and models of citizenship - a shift that constitutes one of the book's most original contributions to scholarship on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Studying the Development of Cyberpunk.......2005-09-09

This book starts with William Gibson's 1984 novel 'Neuromancer' as being the genesis of Cyberpunk. Mr. Gibson takes some offense at this as there were others before him. In fact you might consider Frankenstein as the start, although to be sure 'cyber' hadn't been invented then. Numerous other science fiction novels have something with computer enhancement to a human, even if it is only with 'smart' prostheses replacing a lost arm.

This book traces the transformation of cyberpunk from a literary movement into a multimedia cultural phenomenon. He traces the development of cyberpunk into comic books (Deathlok), film (Robocop - but how could he have missed Darth Vader?), and into other areas.

Book is interesting and has few typos. A lot of nice anecdotes, personal information about the players, practice techniques etc.

However, complicated releases employed by pro's are described in words without pictures. Frankly it is difficult to picture exactly what these guys are doing with their releases etc. Definitely needs more pictures, diagrams, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but impractical information.......2005-10-20

While covering a lot of infomration, this book still did not answer basic questions about how to use Sharepoint. It is geared more for the tech/programmer rather than the end-user.

4 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on the subject........2005-08-24

After purchasing 6 others on the subject of Windows Sharepoint Services, I find that this has the best information on the broad subject of WSS. The book is not perfect but its a fairly easy read and the examples are some what real world.

4 out of 5 stars Good book about WSS.......2005-06-01

This book is a good introduction to MS Windows SharePoint Services (i.e. not SPS). I liked the broad coverage of all WSS features, and not least the introduction to use FrontPage 2003 for enhancing the design and functionality of WSS, plus a short introduction to Web Part development. It is easy to read, even for non-SharePoint guru's. I can recommend it as an introduction to WSS.
