The Best Book on Roswell--But Not Perfect.......2001-10-28
If you have ever taken interest in the UFO phenomenon and the grandest UFO story of all, the Roswell crash, this is the book for you. But it shouldn't be the only book you read on he subject.
The credentials of the author, Stanton Friedman, are impressive. Before he began working on UFO research, he was a respected nuclear physicist who worked on nuclear-thermal rockets. He takes a scientific approach to his research, and he has done a thorough job researching most of his material.
The point of the book is simple: an object of unknown (read: extraterrestrial) origin crashed in Corona, NM on July 2, 1947. At he same time, another UFO went down over the Plains of San Agustin. The US government realized the implications of these events and immediately confiscated all the evidence.
My complaints? Well, Friedman steadfastly denies claims made by his fellow researcher, Kevin Randle, that the main body of the craft went down just north of Roswell. He has subsequently debunked a lot of Randle's witnesses to that event, but little of that appears here. On the other hand, he presents the San Agustin crash with the testimony of only two individuals, one of whom died twenty years ago. It is possible that this event is the same as the "Socorro Crash" that Heseman and Mantell describe in their "Beyond Roswell." And Friedman defends the idea that a group named "Majestic 12" has withheld the UFO secrets since Roswell. Although there was some evidence suporting MJ-12 at the time, the idea has fallen from favor in the UFO community after fraudulent MJ-12 documents were discovered.
Crash at Corona is still the most scientific and accurate look at the confusing events in Roswell in July 1947. Still, the book should not be your only reference on this potentially world-shattering event. A true scientist and truth-seeker would read all of the Roswell books and draw their own conclusions.
A book very well researched........1999-02-03
Crash at Corona is a finely researched book about the UFO crash near Roswell, New Mexico in July of 1947. Don Berliner does a superb job of explaining the goings on at Roswell during the incident as well as the impact it had on the government's attitude about withholding information about the existance of exterrestrial craft visiting our planet. The startling element about this book that sets it apart from other UFO books about this subject is that the statements within are backed up by reasoning and research by Stanton Friedman. Mr.Friedman's tireless campaign of searching many archieves and the interviewing of eye witnesses adds greatly to this endeavor. Mr.Friedman believes in "research by investigation rather than proclamation". Here is an individual that has personally interviewed most of the witnesses involved in the incident that is willing to talk and still alive. I highly recommend this book and strongly urge those interested in UFO's and government conspiracies to purchase and read it.
Friedman Tells The Real Truth About Roswell.......1997-02-09
I heard Mr. Friedman speak at a local college and was intrigued by his speech. I bought this book and was amazed. I had heard about the Roswell crash, but never in such detail. He has names, places, and lots of evidence to point towards a huge government conspiracy. A must read for UFO junkies and conspiracy freaks

This was a very interesting read. Having recently read another of Stanton Friedman's works, I knew what to expect and was not disappointed. A multitude of information was provided cover nearly every aspect of the 1947 flying saucer crashes in New Mexico. I highly recommend this book for anyone that's interested in UFOs, Roswell, or government conspiracies.
Did not live up to the hype........2006-11-04
I was expecting much more from this book and to be honest, I couldn't finish the book. You have to wait until Chapter 7 (71 pages in to the book) before you get the details of the actual crash(es) and then you get 4 chapters on the crash(es), retrieval, shipment, and cover-up. I found the material to be very repetitive after that and it really didn't build on any new points. I'm sure that Berliner and Friedman did their homework but it just didn't live up to all the hype that I've heard from friends. If you're in to this sort of material then this seems to be a well written book which doesn't contain many of the extravagant theories that are proposed in other books.
Extremely thorough.......2006-05-20
I've read more than a few books and articles and watched several documentaries regarding the events that took place near Roswell in early July 1947. Don Berliner and Stanton Friedman lay out the case that an alien spacecraft crashed near Roswell in a way that I think even skeptics will find tough to dismiss. The book is very well researched and thorough in its findings and, while we'll most likely never have the "smoking gun" that proves beyond any doubt of such a crash, this book is about as close as we can get to the facts concerning that event.

A Classic of Chess Literature Still very Useful for Novices.......2006-08-06
In this book Lasker offers the novice many valuable hints which will improve his game rapidly. The book deals with each part of the game with the aid of general principles.
If you are an experienced or already an strong player you won't benefit from this book. Chances are that you will find the book too basic or obvious, but if you are a newcomer to the world of chess you have something to win from reading and studying this book.
The book is wrote in an clear and conversational way, such as the one of a lecturer. Any novice will find expositions of the basic problems common to every game of chess.
Old age, old ideas.......2003-09-22
Dr. Lasker was a great world champion in his time, but that doesn't say that he was a good teacher as well (Dr. Tarrash on the other hand, wasn't a world champion, but he was a great tutor). Lasker's "Common sense in Chess" suffers from a serious weaknesses. The first one is Lasker's type of player. He was a "practical" player more than a theory creator. That helped him, I guess, to keep the title for more than 20 years, but didn't help him to explain in this book the thoughts behind the ideas, to show us how to observe complicated positions, and to understand the game better, like Tarrash did. Second weakness of the book is its age: It was written in 1895. Being an old book doesn't mean that it must be a bad one, but in this case it does. Short time after the book was released, theory revolution started by the "hyper modern" masters - Nimzovich, Reti, Alekhine, Breyer etc. Reti, in his classic "Modern ideas in Chess", demonstrates very well how the old Steinitz school masters, including Lasker, failed to understand the new ideas of the young masters. This revolution, that is represented well by Nimzovich and Reti, and is agreed to be the basic foundation of the modern Chess, is not in this book. So besides a limited historical value, this book had lost its importance years ago, unlike "My system", for example.

This was a disappointing buy to me. Common sense is a large topic and this book didn't give me what I was expecting from it.
The matters are treated in a too slim way, and games analysis are from openings we usually do not see any more. A large subject but a small treatment. But maybe I just didn't understand it?

this is a good book to start with after u get familiar with the
basic rules of chess like how to move pieces castle and all that stuff. this is like a primer for beginners
if u have played well over some 100 games to 200 games u may need it no promise there but if u have played well over 500 games think twice or thrice because it is quite basic well can handle the rest

Here in this book are the essentials of mastering chess play. Lasker divides his book in the principles of opening play, attack, defense and endgame play with illustrated games to show how strategic principles are to be used. This book is not large but it is very complete. The principles are easy to understand and apply. There power is developed through higher and higher levels of practice. It is believed that there have only been five geniuses in chess, Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca, Morphy, Bobby Fisher and Alexander Alkehine. One can do no better than studying the brilliant games of these masters and their writings but I particulary recommend the works of Emanuel Lasker. His manuevering and techniques are very subtle but very powerful. Common Sense in chess is one of his better books and is an excellent course for those who know how to play the game. It is not a beginners course, but if you know the elements of the game, a thourough study and playing through the games can lead to chess mastery.

This book is structured exactly as you would imagine from the title. It's great for looking up a solution quickly when you get stuck. I felt that I needed more "Instruction", being a novice ... so I bought "Exploring Illustrator CS2 (Design Exploration Series) to go with it ... together they are great for the beginner! Both Highly recomended.

Yes, as stated in other reviews, this is a book for those new to Illustrator. Simple, to the point, and clearly written, this book takes the dread and frustration out of using a program that has such an extremely steep learning curve. There is a bit of redundancy when using this book cover-to-cover, but the chapters can also be used as stand-alone reference material in such fashion.
Great book for Illustrator NOVICES.......2006-07-10
At first glance at this book, I really liked how the book was formatted by numbers and "quick tips". This made me feel like learning illustrator would be short and to the point. I liked the screenshots and shortcuts that were included and I felt like the first few chapters (or "tips") were a good way to get introduced to each topic in a quick and easy way. The reading in this book is good. It is easy to follow and straightforward. The reference guide is plus too!
But, for me personally--I did not find this book extremely helpful to my knowledge of Adobe Illustrator. I think it would be great for a REAL Illustrator novice--someone who has absolutely NO prior Adobe Illustrator experience because it explains to the Illustrator student how each step should be taken in a thorough and explanatory way. For someone who has had experience with Illustrator--you might be looking more for a tooltip book like the QuickStart guides that Peachpit press puts out. But for the true Illustrator novice--I think this book can be really beneficial for you!
One last point, I think that I would've liked to see more examples and images of Illustrator-created work as examples for each of the tools that were explained and expounded on in each chapter. This is what helps inspire me as a designer, seeing other people's work and seeing how I can do something similar with an ordinary Illustrator tool.
Again, for a beginner who is just starting out--this book is to the point, well written and can help you be on the road to learning Illustrator in an easy & topically driven way.

I purchased this book based on another review on this site. However,I was very disappointed. This book may be great for a beginner but it is way too basic for anyone
familiar with the previous Illustrator versions. I also did not like the formatting in this book as well as the formatting in other Adobe CS series books.

I have used photoshop for years and bought this book the day i got CS2, and took my first leap into Illustrator. THIS BOOK IS GREAT! I am almost all the way through it and feel like i know this application. The book is simple and breaks Illustrator into 100 techniques with brief but QUALITY instructions. It has a very good index and is great for turning to with questions -- a great refrence or read.
I like and use the book so much that i went and had the binding cut off and spiral bound it (so it lays open flat) with tabs for each chapter. if you are a beginner, this is the book for you. if you have experience with illustrator, you will find this book a helpfull boost of your skills.
I recomend it, and look at the price!! you really can't go wrong.
