Book Description
Working in primarily low-budget films, Paul Blaisdell was forced to rely for his creations on greasepaint, guts and, most importantly, imagination. Here are all the details.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting story of a 50's movie legend.......2005-12-21
This book recounts the film exploits of Paul Blaisdell who, after working on SF pulps, provided costumes, special effects, and some stuntwork and acting for a variety of low budget films of the 50's and 60's most notably SF and horror. The book is laid out in chronological order with each major film occupying a chapter. There are many interesting illustrations including some that were taken as pranks like Blaisdell in full monster costume dancing with Lori Nelson. Most of the photos appear to be from the collection of Blaisdell or his friends and associates rather than production stills. Much of the written material is anecdotal. The author does provide synopses of each of the significant films. This is not necessarily space filler as some of these films are no longer so easy to find and having the plot recounted is helpful to understanding the work Blaisdell did. Of course, it is unlikely anyone reading this review will be unfamiliar with Blaisdell and explaining the importance of his work is probably like preaching to the choir. I doubt a more effective book is likely to come along any time soon. My only complaint is that there is not quite enough technical detail on making the costumes particularly in that there has already been a lot published albeit in more specialized magazines. Aside from that quibble, the book is quite nice and well laid out. If you feel strongly enough about Blaisdell's work to want to read a book about it, then this is the book you are waiting for.
made art out of no $$$.......2004-06-15
In the Bible, the Israelites were ordered by the Pharaoh to make bricks without straw. Similarly, Blaisdell had to create visually interesting and workable monsters on short notice with virtually no money. He succeeded admirably despite having the deck stacked against him. Anyone remotely interested in genre movies will be fascinated by this thorough, excellent book. Highly recommended.
Great stuff on a limited budget.......2001-09-18
Gives a great insight into Paul's work, in some cases you'd think you were there with him. The conditions that Paul worked under was amazing and his commitment and materials used.
His wicked sense of humour and support from his friends in this
then under exposed art of effects and monster making. Still think Technicians behind the scenes should get more support and recognition - grin. This book tops up your enthusiasm to do more
Thanks Randy!.......2001-07-16
Randy Palmer eloquently invokes the fun-loving spirit of Paul and his funky, renegade creations. Paul certainly was a rare breed; capable of creating fiercely original monsters under less than thankless conditions. Paul's monsters are as endearing as they are memorable, imbued with a soulfulness that few possess. Technique can be learned - imagination can't! Like most gifted artists Paul possessed this and met a tragic end. Randy Palmer sets the record straight and Paul is finally given his due. Randy's book is a MUST own for monster lovers/makers everywhere! A big "Beulah" thank you to Randy...and of course Paul.
long due respect for a forgotten monster maker.......2000-08-06
For those of you who don't know, Paul Blaisdell designed and built some of the most memorable movie monsters of the late fifties operating under incredible time constraints and a budget laughable even for American International Pictures. Remember the carrot creature from It Conquered the World? How about the pulpish titular antagonists from Invasion of the Saucer Men or the anatomically correct She Creature? While other special effects men of the time, such as Ray Harryhausen, went on to acclaim and respect in the Hollywood establishment Blaisdell was ignominiously fired upon asking for a little respect in an industry that treats its unknowns even worse than its shining stars. The only information available on the man has been from an old article in Cinefantastique magazine and in the reminiscences of his friend and champion, Bob Burns. This well researched biography can be seen as a celebration of a forgotten special effects man and as another cautionary tale of the Hollywood fringe (a great companion piece to the Ed Wood biography, The Nightmare of Ectasy). Some of his notable creations may be so for the wrong reasons but they had more heart than a good majority of the slick and forgettable monsters made these days. Mr. Palmer's book is a wonderful addition to the bookshelf of any fan of fantastic films and their creators.

Outstanding Reference Manual........2005-03-11
This is the book I ran to when I sent back my 8th edition ASC manual. I refer to this book everyday and always have it with me when shooting. Very well laid out and full of useful information. An indispensable tool for cinematographers, and unlike the ASC manual, has NO advertising in it.
Exellent.......2003-08-02
This and the AC manual are the two bibles that any cinematographer should have in hand when shooting.
It is a comprehensive guide with technical facts, and might be a little to complex for begginers and amateurs.
It is not edited to be readen as a starting/basics book for students, but as a book to be consulted by professionals or starting DPs.

this book is very helpful for students who are aspiring cinemaographers. it provides a guide to various data that is vital on shoots and has basic info that is very important for all cinematographers.
Pretty Good Book.......2000-06-25
I read this book back in film school, it is full of good information and useful tips. For someone who understands film and photography this is a great book. For those who are learning the book is good but may be confusing in some places. That is why I gave it 3 stars.

Book Description
Second-hand fashion has a history as old as the production of clothing itself, but until recently it was given little consideration. Used clothes represent the largest numbers of existing garments but until recently they were not perceived as serious fashion items. However, this has changed dramatically with the rise of vintage web sites, value clothing chains, and the fashion media's perpetuation of the idea that secondhand clothes can be recycled into avant-garde "cool". This book not only shows how important used clothing has become but also what role it plays in culture and history. The Japanese, for example, traditionally salvage sections of kimonos, while in India garments are inexhaustibly recycled. This cross-cultural and historical perspective fills a major gap by offering fresh insights into the innovative use of secondhand dress and age-old traditions of recycling fashion.

Product Description
The macabre world of monsters, killers on the loose and revenge from beyond the grave existed not only in the movies, but also on the radio before televisions dominance in American homes. One of many distinct genres born of early broadcasting, horror radio thrilled millions. Creeping out of the speaker night after night came stories that chilled the listening publiceverything from creature features to sophisticated noir suspense. So eager were Americans to be scared that nearly 80 horror programs aired every week in the late 1940s. This first full-length study of golden age horror radio focuses on six representative programs, starting with The Witchs Tale in 1931 and ending with The Mysterious Traveler in 1952. Each chapter provides the reader with a critically and historically informed study of one series. The book ends with a look at the demise of horror radio and its influence. Photographs are a delightful revelation, revealing the previously unseen (but much heard) work of stars like Agnes Moorehead and Orson Welles as they broadcast famous tales of terror.

Book Description
"Antique', 'vintage', 'previously owned', 'gently used', 'cast-off' ñ the world of second hand encompasses as many attitudes as there are names for it. The popular perception is that second- hand shops are largely full of junk, yet the rise of vintage fashion and the increasing desire for consumer individuality show that second hand shopping is also very much about style. Drawing on six years of original research, Second-Hand Cultures explores what happens when the often contradictory motivations behind style and survival strategies are brought together. What does second hand buying and selling tell us about the state of contemporary consumption? How do items that begin life as new get recycled and reclaimed? How do second hand goods challenge the future of retail consumption and what do the unique shopping environments in which they are found tell us about the social relations of exchange?
Answering these questions and many more, this book fills a major gap in consumption studies. Gregson and Crewe argue that second hand cultures are critical to any understanding of how consumption is actually practised. Following the life stories of goods as they travel into and through second hand sites, the authors look at the work of traders as well as consumers' investments in second hand merchandise ñ including gifting and collecting as well as rituals of personalization and possession. Through its revealing investigation into the practices and customs that make up these unconventional retail worlds, this much-needed study carefully unpacks the persuasive allure of the 'previously owned'.

Book Description
Unlike the majority of contemporary scholarly works that examine Sino-Japanese relations between 1925 and 1945, this study de-emphasizes the story of conflict and war in favor of one that revolves around the way in which the Chinese intellectually encountered the "enemy", the Japanese.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book much needed info about the rest of the world.......2000-01-18
When I bought this book, I would have been satisfied if it had been half as good as it is. It helped me form the first game I ever GMd and everyone who played liked it. I greatly enjoyed and took advantage of the tone settings and motivations for the characters. My only complaint would be the lack of much new equipment and the haziness of the sensor rules (I think my next purchase will be Rigger II). I am sorry that the authors feel as if it was mangled by the editors, but I liked it anyway.
Good material but too many obvious "secrets".......1999-11-09
An interesting book and a good read. My only annoyance (and I've noticed this in the other recent books) is that the 'conspiracies' of Shadowrun have taken a much larger role in the game. Whereas before they were background fluff and could be ignored now they are as obvious as a bat to the head. 'Secrets' scream at you from every page and if you counted up the pages discussing them you would now understand why so much of the original text was cut. It's incredibly annoying unless you really love that aspect of SR.
Get it for the excellent ideas and game mechanics. Don't get it for the background material. I can only hope the authors release the cut material on the web (how bout' it chummer?)
And FASA, for the love of god drop this lame new comic-book style direction. Get rid of the immortal elves, passe evil AIs and omniscient dragons from the past.
This was a great book.......1999-10-19
I really enjoyed this book. It was so cool, and I have read it cover to cover at least five times, never once being bored by it. Now I read the authors' comments, and... man. If what was published rocked, then their original version must hvae just been... too much for words alone. I love this book, and I loved Target: Smuggler's Havens. BTW, Chris, I hope you don't feel offended by this, but I was pretty upset when Jon Szeto introduced stats for a UCAS sub after a friend and I worked on and off for several months in much more detail on our own version of the UCAS's SSN program. (I spend my free time filling in the cracks of the military alternate setting). Still, I really enjoyed the book and look forward to more products.
Finally a sourcebook that encourages roleplaying.......1999-09-19
I've waited for this kind of book for a long while and I can honestly say that this sourcebook rules! I've never seen anything much like it and I can honestly say that this book renews my faith in Shadowrun
Interesting Diversion.......1999-05-02
One of the more interesting alternatives to a standard Shadowrun campaign. Included are all sorts of options to allow you to run various forms of pirate campaigns, or, for the truly twisted GMs out there; this allows you to put runners in over their heads when playing with the big boys of the SR universe.
A must have for any campaign that will deal with major globe hopping or is set near the water. Other important books in such a campaign are: Rigger2 and Target: Smuggler's Havens. Both also located on this site.
Book Description
One of the most popular Macintosh books ever written,
The Mac is not a typewriter has been called the "Strunk and White of typography." Best-selling author
Robin Williams's simple, logical principles for using type to produce beautiful, professional documents are as true now as they were when the original edition was published in 1989. This updated edition includes new examples and expanded information dedicated to the practical advice that made the first edition an enduring bestseller. Throughout, Robin shows you the small details that separate the pros from the amateurs: typographer versus typewriter quotation marks, en and em dashes, tabs and indents, kerning, leading, white space, widows and orphans, and hanging punctuation. If you prepare documents, you'll find
The Mac is not a typewriter, Second Edition an indispensable guide. And those who read your documents will recognize the work of a pro, even if they don't know a curly quote from curly fries.
Customer Reviews:
Still Great........2007-03-21
I bought the first edition of this book when it came out, and I just bought this copy of the second edition because I wanted it.
This book is an extremely valuable reference book. If you follow the pricniples set forth in this book, your documents will look professional.
Robin Williams if the premier author of Macintosh books, and of books on design. All of her works are more than worth the price.
A quick and easy read for every writer who cares about looking professional........2007-01-13
I'm reminded of Shunk and White's "Elements of Style". Short, correct, and invaluable. That's what Robin William's book is for people who care about the look of their written word on a computer. It's easy to make your work look professional and "The Mac is Not a Typewriter" shows you how.
short read, great information.......2006-11-16
For first time mac users, this book is a must! It has great pointers and tips to understand some things most people don't know. It shows you differences in symbols, and shows you key commands that are useful and helpful. I learned a lot from this book.
It's still here! .......2006-03-26
I am so glad this book is still around! I had forgotten what a great, useful, overview of basic typographic principles this "little gem" is.
I teach a Graphic Design class for non-Graphic Design majors in an art college. I was stunned to see most of the students putting two spaces after periods in a book they were making in my class. I explained why this was uneccessary (and in fact wrong) with most typefaces available on the computer, and they said they had all learned this in computer classes in the various high schools they had attended.
I unearthed my copy of this book (from 1990!) and brought it in the next week. Some students went to Amazon right away and bought it. Their work improved markedly.
I will make this a required text for the class next year, and advise anyone looking to learn the basics of good, typographic layout to purchase this wonderful little book.
Must Have Book.......2006-02-07
This is a must have easy to read book that Mac users should have in their library. It provides helpful tips on how to make your designs look professional and help out with the work flow.
