Book Description
...in these original new stories by today's masters of science fiction and fantasy. Two time-tested genres test the limits of "happily ever after" when beloved tales like "Goldilocks" and "Sleeping Beauty" are given an outer-space spin.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Lineup.......2002-09-12
Lest's see... stories by Gregory Benford, Paul Di Filippo, Stanley Schmidt, Tanya Huff, and 10 others including Wil McCarthy himself. The skew is mainly but not totally toward hard science fiction. Some of the fairy tales are recognizable (even named the same as the original), and some are not. Are they well disguised, or perhaps original? Fine reads in any case. Much better than you usually find in these concept anthologies.
McCarthy's introduction is illuminating: "Fairy tales are among our most formative influences, adding a visceral heft and sting to the purely verbal warnings of authority. But fairy tales, without exception, hinge on a supernatural occurrence. And in a way, this seemed to undermine their authority, to relegate them to some other universe where things like that could really happen."
Though not quite up to the level of Starlight, this is an excellent collection by some of the best writers in the field.

The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film (Star Wars)

The Inside Look..........2004-11-10
Alan Arnold had a first hand glimpse behind the scenes of what most fans consider the best Star Wars film out of the Six. From the difficulties of filming on a cold and icy snow blown glacier, to rushing through filming at the massive sound stages at Elstree Studios, Arnold takes us inside for a view that few were aloud to see...and hear.
The price of this paperback book tells of its value and rarity. It is a one of a kind piece of literature that is quickly disappearing from the market. Get a copy while you still can.
BEHIND THE SCENES OF A CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE!.......2000-09-28
Alan Arnold was the publicist on THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. In this journal, Arnold takes you from the very beginning of principal photography to the end of production, detailing all the behind-the-scenes mishaps, adventures and difficulties associated with the filming. Included are interviews with Irvin Kershner, George Lucas, John Williams, all the cast and many of the crew. This is a treasure-trove for STAR WARS fans!
Essential for the Star Wars fan.......1999-11-02
This book covers many aspects of the filming, and as Arnold has covered decades of movie making before writing this book, he is obviously genuinely impressed with the scale of the production. Good interviews with important members of the cast and crew; even includes Sir Alec Guiness. Especially illuminating chats with Lucas about the overall nine part structure of Star Wars. It's interesting to compare Lucas' initial ideas about the sequels and prequels with what was finally released. The highlight of the book is a transciption of a day spent following Irwin Kershner filming on the carbon freezing chamber set (Secrets revealed include the fact that Jeremy Bulloch as Boba Fett was actually desperate to use the lavatory throughout the whole day's shoot). As a collector of Star Wars related books, I have amassed over a hundred, but this remains my favourite.
Great!!!.......1998-04-19
This combined with The Making of Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Making of the Movie recreates for the reader EVERYTHING that went on during pre-production, production, and post-production and even months after! Excellent book for anyone who loves Star Wars, a must-have.

Book Description
The Soddit, The McAtrix Derided, and the aptly titled The Sellamillion:
The parodies are hilarious, but the numbers are serious, with millions of copies sold. And now, in our very own time and galaxy, Star Wars finally gets its comeuppance-just in time to coincide with the release of the 6th and final film. The force is with us!
This is a satire well and truly earned: with the last chapters in the Star Wars' saga reaching new lows, the movies that have dominated popular culture for more than three decades deserve a little tweaking. Oh, sure, a long time ago, in what seems like a galaxy far, far away, there was a very good and thoroughly entertaining SF film. But that's long gone. So here it comes, a six-part mock-epic that begins in the middle of the action, pits good against evil, and features hairy co-pilots, green gurus, bizarre hairdos, steel bras, and campy robots.
In addition to his bestselling parodies, Adam Roberts has written a SF novel, Salt, which was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, as well as a number of academic works.
Customer Reviews:

A.R.R.R. Roberts always writes funny parodies, but this one is especually good. and as always, its very clever without being too crude.

Book Description
For those of us old enough to remember that peace is to be guarded and cherished, we need to tell children of the lessons of the past. We need to teach them that tolerance of diversity and individuality are seeds to be sown that will grow into harmony between nations. It is also urgent that we teach them to treasure the Earth's resources and to manage them wisely in order to avoid an environmental crisis for themselves and for generations to come. This bedtime story hopes to explain that the natural beauty of creation lies in the incredible diversity of life forms; that this diversity is to be appreciated in the environment and ourselves as a gift. The author tries to impart that we need to strive to preserve and not destroy what has been given to us. The story also helps shine a glimmer of hope to show children that their creativity can be used to find solutions to the most daunting of problems, as long as they have the patience to work towards solutions instead of reacting thoughtlessly to the symptoms of these problems. They also need to remember that problems are more easily resolved with the unity of the people involved. They need to be taught that to make friends of foes is the road to peace and better days ahead. Please read this book to a child you love and encourage them to avoid violence, so that they can have the childhood they deserve.

Book Description
The Apprentice, The Amazing Race, The Real World, Survivor, etc. Reality TV is just one glaring example of American youth's fascination with fame and celebrity. Britney, Jessica and Ashley are three of a thousand others. Ask many kids between 12 and 25 what they want to be and they'll tell you "famous." It's an epidemic sweeping the nation, but as George Clooney says, "there's no handbook for fame." Until now
.
Written by two CBS News Directors well-versed in the realm of celebrity, The Official Celebrity Handbook gives readers practical advice on how to become famous, while imparting wry observations and little-known facts about the often mysterious realm of celebrity. With hundreds of websites to showcase the glamour world of celebrity the authors manage to reveal the perks and pitfalls of seeking fame and fortune-- no matter what the venue.
As former CBS Sports President Neal Pilson, and the person who hired Howard Cossell, John Elway and John Madden, said, "It's a miracle I survived so long without this invaluable guide to the world of stars and celebrities."
Customer Reviews:
Funny but absolutely useful!.......2006-05-14
I don't know why Entertainment Tonight hasn't hilited this book. Perhaps they have enough celebs to cover. But I swear, if you honestly are interested in becoming famous, or at least finding out what angle is best going to get you there-- like if you should try for reality TV (and HOW to do all that) or perhaps journalism (Katie Couric!!) or just getting famous by sleeping in an airport or becomig a famous bounty hunter, this is the guide for you.
Great Summer Read.......2005-07-30
If you like reading US and People magazine, and you're a celebrity follower, this book is a fun, summer read. Chock full of interesting facts about how stars made it big, and what they did when they were very little will give you a smile. Enjoy!
I'm gonna be a "STAR"!.......2005-07-07
What fun! This, sometimes tongue-in-cheek", book tells you all of those little secrets you need to become a celebrity. It's easy to read and that perfect companion for any trip or just to have on your night-stand. Even if this book doesn't help you to become a real celebrity, it will allow you to live like one for a while.

Customer Reviews:
Good layout, shallow comments, no scoring and grading scales.......2002-12-11
Content - Another one of many books attempting to cover "endless" ways of chess endgames. 160 pages of chess endgames including mini-lessons, exercises, and answers.
Positive: Nice attractive layout with large diagrams. Good number of interesting positions - ranging from famous classics to some of the recent classics to be. Separate chapters on Strategic thinking and Planning. Exercises are split in three separate chapters by level difficulty. Chapters with solutions have diagrams, so one can follow without the chessboard.
Negative: If this meant to be a test book, then where is the scoring system? How is the one can judge what his level is without been able to compare his answers/scores to some scale? Solutions/explanations are very shallow. In many cases obvious ideas are not covered and few times, the whole evaluation can quickly change. I will have examples of major omissions on my WEB site. Some diagrams have typos or incorrect piece placement.
Reading Audience: I believe that chess coaches and higher rated players (2300+) will benefit from this book as it offers them additional materials that they may not be familiar with. Others will find this book incomplete.
Overall: Good attempt that comes short, due to been shallow for teaching and missing scoring and grading scale for testing. Nice read on the go for higher rated player (2300+) who already studied other endgame books. To everyone else I would recommend my standard Endgame package. Alburt - "Just the Facts", Muller "Fundamental Chess Endgames", Hays "Endgame Challenge"
Questions, comments welcomed.

Windows Server Cookbook for Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000
ASIN: 0596005628 |
Book Description
While computers and other devices identify each other on networks or the Internet by using unique addresses made up of numbers, humans rely on the Domain Name System (DNS), the distributed database that allows us to identify machines by name. DNS does the work of translating domain names into numerical IP addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services, so that users require little or no knowledge of the system. If you're a network or system administrator, however, configuring, implementing, and maintaining DNS zones can be a formidable challenge. And now, with Windows Server 2003, an understanding of the workings of DNS is even more critical. DNS on Windows Server 20003 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND, updated to document the many changes to DNS, large and small, found in Windows Server 2003. Veteran O'Reilly authors, Cricket Liu, Matt Larson, and Robbie Allen explain the whole system in terms of the new Windows Server 2003, from starting and stopping a DNS service to establishing an organization's namespace in the global hierarchy. Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows Server 2003 tackles the many issues specific to the new Windows environment, including the use of the dnscmd program to manage the Microsoft DNS Server from the command line and development using the WMI DNS provider to manage the name server programmatically. The book also documents new features of the Microsoft DNS Server in Windows Server 2003, including conditional forwarding and zone storage in Active Directory (AD) application partitions. DNS on Windows Server 2003 provides grounding in:
- Security issues
- System tuning
- Caching
- Zone change notification
- Troubleshooting
- Planning for growth
If you're a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows Server 2003 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day. If you're a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet's architecture and inner workings.
Customer Reviews:
Updates are always good........2007-07-30
I was already fimilar with DNS from the first issues of this book. But this new issue does cover Microsoft DNS which I believe is excellent.
More ISP and System Admins nowadays are reliaing on MS DNS because it comes free with Microsoft Servers, high performance, it has a text based like Unix DNS, it is easy to maintain and the big reason is that it's easy to pass on the DNS responsibilities to any lower cost IT staff.
Don't use this book if you are preparing for 70-291........2007-07-25
I just recently bought this book because of the fine reviews people gave.
The reason i bought this book is to get a clearer understanding of DNS related to Server 2003. I don't want to be a paper MCSE so i look voor as
much study material on the subject where i can get my hands on.
To cut corners if you are studying for the 70-291 please buy this book read it and come back here and tell how much it helped you. For me it was
a waste of money. The info can be obtained by smart Google searches.
That was my oppinion now about the book itself.
It starts very good i have to say with the explaination of DNS in an overview. The book is ok until you are getting at chapter 5 of the 16th chapters.
Chapter 5 is about MX records Exhange etc. The chapter is much to brief in my oppinion arround 9 pages or 4 A4 pages.
Chapter 7 is better but after that downhill. I skipped chapters.
Chapter 15 and 16 are again uphill.
To recap my experiences, the Book starts very promising in the first 4 chapters, they walk you through the installation of some DNS servers, and
the strange thing is they leave that path. The stuf gets boring to read over the chapters that follow and it turns out in a dry textbook.
TO end there is an old saying in Holland perhaps english speakers know it also: 'In the land of the blind one eye is King'. Consultants
are being payed to Design and set up in this case DNS solutions, its like shooting in your own foot to write well written books on those subjects.
And thats the problem, i found the official Microsoft 70-291 and the DNS discussed there of a better quality, a big Shame on you guys!!
Matt Larson, Cricket Liu and Robbie Allen.
The book for Windows DNS.......2007-07-06
I got this book coming from a BIND background and wanting to move to Windows DNS (I do have a valid reason). The first few chapters cover DNS background similar to the BIND book. After that it moves on into how to do things in the Windows world. It uses examples that are straight from the BIND book but done in Windows 2003. There are lots of screen shots and clear explanation. One of the really good things, for those coming from a *nix background, are the chapters on running from a command line and using PERL scripts to manage DNS. Overall it is a great book for anyone running DNS on Windows.
Good review.......2007-02-20
Well written book, it needs to be updated for newer operating systems that are now being used. Good examples and illustrations, the book will be a good review or refresher for those that haven't been around DNS in a while.
An absolutely painless way to fill your DNS knowledge gap!.......2006-10-25
I find O'Reilly books to be like Cisco's or Apple's books, in that they place a value on being readable, witty, and scrupulously technical. You will understand DNS on Win2K3 if you read this book.

Windows 2000 Active Directory is a notably authoritative and engaging guide to the Microsoft Active Directory (AD) for any administrator or developer making the move to the new Windows and this powerful directory standard.
Articulate and technically astute, the author comes across as a trusted advisor, providing an expert's view of designing the layout of your company's Active Directory schema. In realistic terms, he shows you how AD can coexist with Unix directories. The book not only provides a collection of screen shots (though there are hands-on tutorials for specific tasks) but also a nicely in-depth tour of what Internet directories are and what advantages Active Directory offers. Case studies on sample domains and organization units (OUs) for sample companies, including a model global corporation, will help you cope with the design of even the most complex directories. Hints for limiting "domains" and favoring the more flexible "organizational units" (OUs) will also help you think in Windows 2000 terms.
Later sections of the book delve into Active Directory Services Interface (ASDI) scripting using Windows Script Host (WSH), Visual Basic, and even ASPs for browser-based administration. The tips and sample scripts for a variety of common administrative tasks, such as adding new users, changing passwords, and the like, assume very little programming background. This focus on the practical side of administration rounds out an extremely useful and technically savvy guide to Windows 2000 that can definitely simplify the life of any administrator, manager, or developer upgrading to the latest Windows. --Richard Dragan
Book Description
When Microsoft introduced Windows 2000, the most important change was the inclusion of Active Directory. With many great benefits, it continues to be a huge headache for network and system administrators to design, implement and support. The first edition of this book, O'Reilly's best-selling Windows 2000 Active Directory, eased their pain considerably. Now titled Active Directory, 2nd Edition, this book provides system and network administrators, IT professionals, technical project managers, and programmers with a clear, detailed look at Active Directory for both Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. The upgraded Active Directory that ships with Windows Server 2003 has over 100 new and enhanced features and once again, O'Reilly has the answers to puzzling questions. While Microsoft's documentation serves as an important reference, Active Directory, 2nd Edition is a guide to help the curious (and weary) understand the big picture. In addition to the technical details for implementing Active Directory, several new and significantly enhanced chapters describe the numerous features that have been updated or added in Windows Server 2003 along with coverage of new programmatic interfaces that are available to manage it. After reading the book you will be familiar with the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), multi-master replication, Domain Name System (DNS), Group Policy, and the Active Directory Schema, among many other topics. Authors Robbie Allen and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris are experienced veterans with real-world experience. Robbie is a Senior Systems Architect in the Advanced Services Technology Group at Cisco Systems. He was instrumental in the deployment and automation of Active Directory, DNS and DHCP at Cisco, and is now working on network automation tools. Alistair is an enterprise program manager for Microsoft U.K. and previously worked for Leicester University as the project manager and technical lead of the Rapid Deployment Program for Windows 2000. Active Directory, 2nd Edition will guide you through the maze of concepts, design issues and scripting options enabling you to get the most out of your deployment.

What can I say? This book is necessary for any AD admin........2007-09-16
Not much to say, other than I finished this gem with a wealth of knowledge. You can really just jump around to interesting chapters, or read it cover to cover. This book covers everything from policies, to ADSI, to scripting.
use this instead of the Gerald Carter book.......2007-05-25
Hi, I got this book because I could not make heads nor tails of LDAP System Administration by Gerald arter. I read this book, and studied this book, and learned from this book. The authors of this book make their living from the Active Directory. Thus you can be sure that they are not going to make fools of themselfs by publishing
a whole lot of garbage. I used this book to learn about LDAP and then I successfully implemented LDAP at work.
Highly recommended!
Miserable dictionary of doublespeak.......2006-09-14
Not recommended for native speakers of the English language.
When trees == forests and top-level directories are instead 'naming contexts' .... The desirable format would be "This feature, which MS call 'X', is 'Y' plain english", but instead the Y feature will only ever be called X.
This is not a helpful book.
The overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more.......2006-08-05
Joe Richards, Robbie Allen and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris' Active Directory, 3rd Edition is also for Windows administrators who may know all to well about the problems it's brought to prior versions of windows. This edition considers the Directory for Windows 2000, 2003 and its updates, considering the overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more. Yes, you can use Microsoft's documentation for many similar answers; but here they are arranged in a more logical manner and provide more candid assessments to help users upgrade or understand options.
Great book but there is a new edition.......2006-07-21
This is the leading reference for Active Directory but it has been updated to a third edition, so you should get that one.

The material in the book was good enough for me to be able to pass the exam, however it is evident that it was written atleast 12 months ago. The publisher should consider releasing a revised edition soon.
Goog Book but Sometimes VERY Dry.......2004-09-30
One thing is for sure about this book... Some of the chapters are (1) VERY dry, (2) have looooong run-on sentences and (3) at times are quite difficult to figure out their logic/order. Chapter 2, for example, took me nearly a week to pick apart the run-on sentences, eliminate the 'garbage', piece together the 'meat' and then try to make sense of what was being said. It was painfully dull! Some of the other chapters, too, were about as exciting as reading a dictionary.
I haven't taken the test just yet, but I did find this book to be quite nice. Explanations are very good and overall, it's organized quite well. I'll post more after I take the test!
Good material, but needs a good Editor.......2004-01-21
The material in this book and in the 70-292 Study Guide is very good and complete. However, the number typos, punctuation errors, references to missing or incorrect figures, and just plain wrong answers to some practice questions -- is all very distracting. It would appear that the final edit of this book was skipped in order to get it out on schedule. Unfortunate. Make sure you have plenty of hands-on experience before taking this exam, esp. if this is your only source of study material.
On my way to my MCSE 2003!.......2004-01-09
I used this book along with some hands-on experience with Windows 2003 and was able to pass the test after about two weeks. This rating is based solely on the book material, as I did not use the DVD.
Good book, coverage of materials.......2003-11-18
I have been studying for this exam for over a month now using various sources, but this book brought everything together in a clear and concise manner. Unfortunately, some of the chapters are a bit lengthy and could have been seperated for easier retention, and the DVD was "ok". Other than that, it did a great job of preparing me for the exam.
