    Book Description

The Rowley family's struggle began when Amy entered kindergarten and culminated five years later in a pivotal decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. In effect, the Court majority concluded that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act did not mandate equal opportunity for children with disabilities in classes with typical children; a disappointing decision for disability advocates.

The Supreme Court decided that schools were required only to provide enough help for children with disabilities to pass from grade to grade. The Court reversed the lower courts' rulings, which had granted Amy an interpreter, setting a precedent that could affect the quality of education for all individuals with disabilities.

From the time Amy entered kindergarten in Peekskill, New York, her parents battled with school officials to get a sign language interpreter in the classroom. Nancy and Clifford Rowley, also deaf, struggled with officials for their own right to a communications process in which they could fully participate. Stuck in limbo was a bright, inquisitive child, forced to rely on partial lipreading of rapid classroom instruction and interaction, and sound amplifiers that were often broken and always cumbersome.

R.C. Smith chronicles the Rowley family's dealings with school boards, lawyers, teachers, expert consultants, advocates, and supporters, and their staunch determination to get through the exhaustive process of presenting the case time after time to school adjudicative bodies and finally the federal courts. The author also documents his own "coming to awareness" about how the "able" see the "disabled."

5 out of 5 stars Great Book about a Great Person.......2004-11-23

The Amy in this book is near and dear to my heart. And that is not because she shares the same name as me. Or that i find her story to be inspiring and uplifting. Rather i cherish this book because Amy was my teacher in college.

No, I am not deaf, nor hard of hearing. Rather I am an Occupational Therapist.

Amy was my sign teacher at Mt. Mary College and she brought to us a wealth of knowledge that has known little equal.

People talk about imersion schooling, that is what it was like with Amy. There was no talking just signing learning and growing. First with baby steps and then with leaps and bounds. She was not teaching us about how to communicate with her world... but rather how our world needs to open our eyes and communicate with hers.

This story is a great reflection of Amy's life. What her life was and the things that her parents fought and advocated for helped to form the truly magnicifient person that she is. As a result she has a special inner light that shines for all to see.

I now work in a school system, much thanks to Amy. Without her inspiration i don't know if would have choosen this path. It is not easy to fight for my kids to get them the services they need. Its never as easy as it could be... kids need services but money always drives that bottom line.

Perhaps this is a good book for any parent to read that has a child with special needs. Weather that special need means IEP or 504 it should matter not. We all have to advocate for the little ones... they are our hearts and our souls. If we be not the Gladiators to defeat the Lions... then I know not who will be the voice of those who have none.....

    5 out of 5 stars A Time Odyssey.......2000-07-20

A Case about Amy by R.C. Smith. 1996. Temple University Press. 322 pages.

Smith takes a reader on a time odyssey (1976-1982) to witness a struggle of the Deaf parents of a Deaf daughter, Amy Rowley, and a hearing son endured through the maze of an education and court systems in their quest towards an equal opportunity for Amy enrolled in a public school.

His book, which took Smith about 12 years of researching and interviewing, illustrates how the systems of power could be shifted into their favor by manipulating the interpretation of loosely worded in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. And later in Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (PL 94-142), which was renamed Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA). Instead of accepting the lower court's order to provide Amy Rowley a sign language interpreter, the school board appealed and argued over the definition of "equal opportunity" versus "full potential" or "appropriate education" that went all the way to Supreme Court.

Along that time odyssey Smith introduced the family's lawyer, Michael Chatoff, who turned deaf in his 20s and how he overcame unjust discrimination against him as he was striving to become the lawyer he was and argued the case for Rowleys at Supreme Court. Smith is successful in presenting an objective insight of the politics, controversial issues, and everyone revolving around and inside the community of Deaf citizens.

A reader may be stunned to learn that the judges of Supreme Court did not scrutinize the Act that was passed in Congress, and they decided that since her achievement tests scores proved that even without a sign language interpreter Amy was getting an appropriate education. As a result, the definition of "appropriate education" or "full potential" won over "equal opportunity." This decision was also cost effective for a public school to avert providing a sign language interpreter for Amy.

Hence, from that time odyssey, a reader questions the true intention of society at large in educating bright deaf children like Amy. Does the school board ever encourage deaf children to accomplish beyond the standard academic achievement expected of average hearing children?

      Book Description

In examining why it is that people with higher socioeconomic status have better health than lower-status individuals, Mirowsky and Ross utilizes their strength in survey research on a broad national scale. Drawing on findings and ideas from many sciences, including demography, economics, social psychology, and the health sciences, they argue that education creates most of the association between higher social status and better health. People who are well educated feel in control of their lives, which encourages a healthy lifestyle. In addition, learned effectiveness, a practical end of that education, enables them to find work that is autonomous and creative, thereby promoting good health. The benefits of education to health are pervasive, cumulative, and self-amplifying, growing across the life course. In this book, the authors challenge received notions in medical sociology and public health, while extending the effects of social stratification.

        Book Description

"Anyone seeking to identify potentially useful disease-specific measures for their study will find this a good starting point." Quality of Life Research

        Praise for the first edition:

"...text that is remarkably detailed and comprehensive in its coverage of a range of quality of life measures...Bowling's book provides an important step towards the development of measures of quality of life that are both sensitive and rigorous." - Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health

"...a most useful and comprehensive addition to the literature...The book is readable, well referenced and up to date. I recommend any group that wishes to attempt to measure health outcomes to consider adding this book to their resource list." - Australian Health Review

"...this book gives an in-depth and comprehensive insight in health-related quality of life scales...a most valuable guide in helping the reader search for the scale with the best psychometric properties. Furthermore, this book will contribute highly to the improvement of disease-specific measurement of quality of life and to the comparability of measurement results." - Journal of Health Psychology

This is a thoroughly updated and revised edition of Measuring Disease. It supplements the author's previous work Measuring Health (2nd edition). In assessing the outcome of disease and treatments, measurement scales must be relevant to their specific effects, necessitating the use of disease specific questionnaires. There is now considerable interest in measures which are multi-dimensional, and which are more sensitive than generic measures to specific disease and treatment effects. This book reviews disease specific measures of quality of life and, where relevant, popularly used symptom and single dimension scales. It is intended as a source book for researchers, medical and health care practitioners who are involved in the measurement of the outcome of health services.

              Book Description

Understanding Health Inequalities turns the spotlight on a question at the heart of health and welfare policy. Why is there a social class gradient in health? How do socio-economic inequalities in life chances and living conditions take their toll on health? The book tackles the questions of why and how by drawing on UK research funded under the ESRC's Health Variations Programme. The authors - at the forefront of research in their field - focus on issues which hold the key to explaining and reducing health inequalities. Separate sections of the book focus on:

              * ethnicity, gender and socio-economic status
              * how health is shaped by experiences and exposures over the lifecourse
              * how our home and neighbourhood may have an additional influence on our health.

A fourth theme - that of policy development and policy impact - runs through these sections and is explicitly addressed in the concluding chapter. Written with the student and practitioner in mind, Understanding Health Inequalities is designed to make cutting-edge research on health inequalities accessible to both the academic and policy communities.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Biography of Morphy.......2005-04-04

As a game collection, this may not be the best book on Morphy, although it has its points. As a biography, it is unmatchable. Lawson has researched the primary sources thoroughly, and the result is the fullest and most accurate account available of Morphy's life. A number of myths and misconceptions, still being perpetuated in other works, are corrected here. Unlike many chess biographies, this reads like a serious work of scholarship, with meticulous documentation of the positions that the author takes.
The sixty unannotated games given here are no substitute for Sergeant's books on Morphy, but they do add some additional information. Take the games which Morphy played against Löwenthal when he, Morphy, was only twelve. We learn that Löwenthal changed the last few moves of one of these games to make it appear that it had been drawn, when it reality it was won by Morphy. In another famous game, the anonymous amateur who Morphy checkmated by castling, turns out to have been his father, and there are other revelations.
It's too bad that this book is out of print; it would be a great candidate for decent quality paperback reprint. If you can get a good copy of the original hardcover, snap it up.

This is the one of the most exciting books I have ever read! Paul Morphy, chess champion extroidinaire, the pride of New Orleans, was the most profound chess player in the history of the world...Robert J. Fischer not withstanding. Among the best biographies ever written. A must read for every chess enthusiast and lovers of American heroes.

Found the book to be well written, also found a real hero in Paul Morphy. I highly recomend this book, great storys about Morphy's ability as well as letters and photo's from the time. Really a great read.

                    Book Description

Shell scripting skills never go out of style. It's the shell that unlocks the real potential of Unix. Shell scripting is essential for Unix users and system administrators-a way to quickly harness and customize the full power of any Unix system. With shell scripts, you can combine the fundamental Unix text and file processing commands to crunch data and automate repetitive tasks. But beneath this simple promise lies a treacherous ocean of variations in Unix commands and standards. Classic Shell Scripting is written to help you reliably navigate these tricky waters. Writing shell scripts requires more than just a knowledge of the shell language, it also requires familiarity with the individual Unix programs: why each one is there, how to use them by themselves, and in combination with the other programs. The authors are intimately familiar with the tips and tricks that can be used to create excellent scripts, as well as the traps that can make your best effort a bad shell script. With Classic Shell Scripting you'll avoid hours of wasted effort. You'll learn not only write useful shell scripts, but how to do it properly and portably. The ability to program and customize the shell quickly, reliably, and portably to get the best out of any individual system is an important skill for anyone operating and maintaining Unix or Linux systems. Classic Shell Scripting gives you everything you need to master these essential skills.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to learn the basics.......2007-03-13

I've scrolled through lots of books, there is so much information out there, but this book has a tendency to keep it simple and to the point. It has good illustrative examples that not only are useful but also serve as a good practice guide.

5 out of 5 stars A good intro on Unix shell scripting and the problems it solves.......2007-02-16

The purpose of this handy little book is to help someone who is working with Unix through the labyrinth of tools available and learn how and when to use them. It is important to note what is mentioned in the preface - "Throughout this book, we use the term Unix to mean not only commercial variants of the original Unix system, such as Solaris, Mac OS X, and HP-UX, but also the freely available workalike systems, such as GNU/Linux and the various BSD systems: BSD/OS, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD." I quote the book because the word "Unix" is about as descriptive as the word "car". The intended audience is anyone who is computer literate, already knows how to program, and is regularly faced with diverse problems in the workplace that must be solved with Unix tools. This book should give you a taste of which tool to turn to and when.

This book can be divided basically into two halves. The first half is a tutorial on writing Unix scripts. The book starts with a brief history of the Unix language and the philosophy behind Unix tools. Slowly, each chapter builds up your skill at script writing. You are shown how to differentiate between shells, how to work with text extensively, how to use loops, pipelines, variables, and decision statements, and how to work with files. There are detailed example scripts at every step along the way. By the end of chapter seven, you should know enough about basic shell scripting to be dangerous.

Starting in chapter 8, you are showed more application-related information. First, Chapter 8 shows and discusses some ready-made scripts for some tasks for which there is no out-of-the-box Unix solution. Some of the handy solutions shown are for path searching and automating software builds. Chapter 9 is a crash course on awk, and is aptly named. It is just enough to be dangerous. You learn how to solve common text processing problems with awk, but you'll need more resources to be really knowledgable. Chapter 10 explains the usage of common commands for listing files, modifying their timestamps, creating temporary files, finding files in a directory hierarchy, applying commands to a list of files, determining the amount of filesystem space used, and comparing files. Next there are two applied chapters showing you how to merge several databases and how to perform spellchecking by using scripting. Chapter 13 changes the subject a bit and talks about the concept of processes in Unix and how you can use their statistics to accomplish a number of monitoring and control tasks. Chapter 14 talks about problems you may run into if you try to take advantage of shell-language extensions, while Chapter 15 addresses the issue of writing secure scripts to the extent it is possible to do so. Writing man pages, and the basics of the Unix filesystem are the subjects of the last two chapters of the book.

I would say it is a good modern introduction to the subject of shell scripting and Unix tools and how to use them. It doesn't dive deeply into any particular topic, but it will get you started by broadly introducing you to the problems most Unix script writers and system admins face regularly and how to get started solving those problems. I highly recommend it for that purpose.

4 out of 5 stars Nice overview of Bourne/sh scripting.......2006-11-17

This book provides a nice overview of the Bourne/sh shell's commands. I wish there were more examples with complete scripts. Korn shell users might want to consider "Korn Shell: Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Bash users might want to consider "Bash Shell: Essential Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Some of the examples in Randal K. Michael's "Mastering UNIX Shell Scripting" are also helpful.

                    4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2006-03-12

I would say this is a pretty good book that covers it's subject very well, buti didn't use it much because i had also bought Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition, which covered the basics and differences between the shells briefly, which was all i needed at the time. but i looked through this and read some stuff that helped and it is a good book if you plan on doing extended shell scripting. it was just a little more than i actually needed

5 out of 5 stars Practical and useful .......2005-09-20

Great book. The emphasis is nicely split between actually using the shell itself and the whole supporting cast of unix tools (sed, awk, cut, join, sort etc.) The idea of carefully crafting solutions using the unix toolbox mindset is key. I also like the fact he doesn't try to teach to multiple shells, but first tries to emphasize portability by sticking mainly to a POSIX standard, and only later adds info about non standard shell topics. If I could only have one book on shell scripting, this would be it. The best description is 'Practical'.

                    Book Description

The Korn shell is an interactive command and scripting language for accessing Unix® and other computer systems. As a complete and high-level programming language in itself, it's been a favorite since it was developed in the mid 1980s by David G. Korn at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Knowing how to use it is an essential skill for serious Unix users. Learning the Korn Shell shows you how to use the Korn shell as a user interface and as a programming environment. Writing applications is often easier and quicker with Korn than with other high-level languages. Because of this, the Korn shell is the most often used shell in commercial environments and among inexperienced users. There are two other widely used shells, the Bourne shell and the C shell. The Korn shell, or ksh, has the best features of both, plus many new features of its own. ksh can do much to enhance productivity and the quality of a user's work, both in interacting with the system, and in programming. The new version, ksh93, has the functionality of other scripting languages such as awk, icon, Perl, rexx, and tcl. Learning the Korn Shell is the key to gaining control of the Korn shell and becoming adept at using it as an interactive command and scripting language. Prior programming experience is not required in order to understand the chapters on basic shell programming. Readers will learn how to write many applications more easily and quickly than with other high-level languages. In addition, readers will also learn about Unix utilities and the way the Unix operating system works in general. The authors maintain that you shouldn't have to be an internals expert to use and program the shell effectively. The second edition covers all the features of the current version of the Korn shell, including many new features not in earlier versions of ksh93, making it the most up-to-date reference available on the Korn shell. It compares the current version of the Korn shell to several other Bourne-compatible shells, including several Unix emulation environments for MS-DOS and Windows. In addition, it describes how to download and build ksh93 from source code. A solid offering for many years, this newly revised title inherits a long tradition of trust among computer professionals who want to learn or refine an essential skill.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book, Worth Buying.......2007-07-13

I bought this book a few days ago for use at work. Previously, I didn't have much of a need for interacting with a Unix shell outside of cd and ls.

This book reads easy, and the author(s) seem genuinely interested in the subject - not the usual dry textbook point of view. Topics are explained well, with small examples to show how it actually works. I would suggest having access to a Unix machine with the Korn shell, as you can experiment with the commands a bit on your own.

BTW, I didn't realize that the Unix machine I work on has the 1988 version of the Korn shell instead of the 93 version (the book covers 93), but most of the book is still relevant. They also cover what has changed in the 2 versions.

5 out of 5 stars Learning the Korn Shell (2nd Edition).......2007-01-28

I once was blind. Spending decades in the UNIX world I spent time with several shells. Down through the years I visited many shells and even bought a book on the Korn Shell by the designer David Korn. I sort of got complacent (know-it-all).

Now obtaining a position supporting AIX I once again find that the prefer supported shell is the Korn shell; even sh is linked to ksh93. Several times I came across unexplainable anomalies; sometime paths would be absolute and at other times they would follow links. Traps seemed to work a tad different and other outcomes seemed to be hit or miss.

The purchase of this book has been a real eye opener. What seemed to be arbitrary was in reality lack of personal knowledge of the latest version of the korn shell.

I could not believe that a book by David Korn of AT&T did not even mention signals.

Some of the highlights of the book are:
                    Job control
                    Functions
                    Command history
                    Command-line editing
                    Integrated programming features
                    Control structures
                    Debugging primitives
                    Regular expressions
                    Advanced I/O features
                    New options and variables
                    Increased speed
                    Security features
                    Major features
                    Security features

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-12-02

This book is just great. It has a lot of examples and every concept is well explained. Even for those who are not used to programming, this is a great book to start shell scripting.
The authors relate concepts (commands usage, for example) with those of bash and other shells, which is very helpful if you already know how to program with csh, Bourne, etc.
So... if you're looking for a GOOD book about ksh, buy this one!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Reference to KSH.......2005-11-22

I found this book very helpful in learning to write scripts for the Korn Shell. I keep it on my desk all the time now, even for other shells (Bash/etc). It's an invaluable reference to me.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you use KSH.......2004-11-30

While not as popular (at least in Linux circles) as bash, ksh is a powerful language/tool. Put bluntly, this is one of the few O'Reilly books I have read cover to cover. That isn't to say that the others don't warrant a thorough perusal, but that this book was readily accessible and provided excellent information. I have used it as a reference countless times over the years and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone using or considering using ksh. Moreover, if you are considering using ksh - or perhaps need a better background in Unix shell scripting - read this book.
