    Book Description

An insightful look at eight contemporary Japanese artists whose work is imbued with the reality of change. Influences discussed range from manga (Japanese comic strips), traditional performance art as well as George Segal and Cindy Sherman. But the resemblance between Japanese and Western art can be misleading. In a society renowned for its ability to copy Western products, resemblance typically remains on the surface. With five essays.

4 out of 5 stars Step into the bizarre.......2001-09-05

APPEARANCE is essentially a catalogue of an exhibition in Bologna in 2000, an indepth survey of the works of the "bizarrists" Mariko Mori, Yasumasa Morimura, Luigi Ontani, Andres Serrano, Tony Oursler, and Pierre & Giles. Each of these interesting artists begin with photography and transform their worlds via costume, settings, art history, and a heavy dollup of kitsch. The results are variably gratifying and self serving. But at least they are always interesting! The text is in both Italian and English and is informative while not probative. A good selection to add to your fine art photography library, but chances are it will decorate your coffee table more than your reading desk...........

I first came across Moriko Mori's work on line. I was searching for an artist for an art paper I had to write about. I wanted someone different from the classic artists. Her work is visially brilliant. She combines traditional concepts with modern technology to make contemporary pop art. Her background in fashion and design are apparant. And her eye for detail is astounding. She transforms herself in time from the future to the past. As well as using herself as the model in her work. I now have begun to search for her latest displays. I really have an appreciation for her work.

                Book Description

One of the best-known Japanese artists of the international scene, Mariko Mori, born in 1967 in Tokyo, envisions fantastical worlds and beings in spectacular photographs and videos--frequently casting herself amid these scenarios as a Bjork-esque avatar in biomorphic and technological symbiosis. Mori studied fashion design in Tokyo, worked briefly as a model and later studied fine art in England, and this early education is visible in her elaborately produced photographs, videos and sculpture that are as reminiscent of Hollywood as they are of contemporary art. Her recent work involves exotic landscapes, computer-generated images and choreographed performances for which the artist designs her own costumes and plays the central characters. This extraordinary and substantial publication offers a retrospective of Mori's entire oeuvre, and is the first to present the complete Beginning of the End: Past, Present, Future, a photographic cycle produced over a period of 11 years, in which Mori presents herself as a time traveler in a plexiglass capsule at significant symbolic locations, from Giza to New York to Shanghai.

                  Book Description

Jackson Pollock dancing to the music as he painted; Romare Bearden's stage and costume designs for Alvin Ailey and Dianne McIntyre; Stanley Crouch stirring his high-powered essays in a room where a drumkit stands at the center: from the perspective of the new jazz studies, jazz is not only a music to define -- it is a culture. Considering musicians and filmmakers, painters and poets, the intellectual improvisations in Uptown Conversation reevaluate, reimagine, and riff on the music that has for more than a century initiated a call and response across art forms, geographies, and cultures.

Building on Robert G. O'Meally's acclaimed Jazz Cadence of American Culture, these original essays offer new insights in jazz historiography, highlighting the political stakes in telling the story of the music and evaluating its cultural import in the United States and worldwide. Articles contemplating the music's experimental wing -- such as Salim Washington's meditation on Charles Mingus and the avant-garde or George Lipsitz's polemical juxtaposition of Ken Burns's documentary Jazz and Horace Tapscott's autobiography Songs of the Unsung -- share the stage with revisionary takes on familiar figures in the canon: Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Louis Armstrong.

The first set of miniatures designed to complement the Forgotten Realms® Campaign Setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, this box set features key characters from the City of the Spider Queen adventure, which ties into R.A. Salvatore's War of the Spider Queen novel series. Both the drow as a race and the location referenced in the title are extremely popular with fans of the Forgotten Realms setting. Players can immerse themselves in the world of the drow with this set of miniatures, sculpted especially to complement the roleplaying content coming out the same month.

It is good that you have these mini's but I suggest that you stick to the plastic variety. For the following reasons:
-The Drow Wizard's back banner doesn't fit and had to glued-on sideways
-The Drow Ranger's hand snapped off and had to be glued-on. The other scimitar snapped off
-Irae T'Sarran is missing a foot on my set
-The Drow Soldier, Archer, & Warrior weren't the problem ones
-The Drow Wizard, Ranger, & Irae T'Sarran were problem ones
-The bases had to permantlty glued on because without the glue the minis would have fallen out of the base
-The price for this set is unreasonable
-The pewter minis require assembly and paint
-The newer, more plastic minis aren't too expensive and are ready for use.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly well done.......2002-10-22

WotC's past figures have generally been of mediocre quality at best and take some time to assemble (flash, ill-fitting connection points, et cetera). It seems that they've finally gotten it right with the City of the Spider Queen set.

You get a decent selection of drow figures, including a cool drow ranger (it needed touching up, as the sword blade snapped off, but still a cool figure). Irae T'sarren makes this set a collector's piece, especially for those that own the City of the Spider Queen adventure or have a general interest in the Forgotten Realms setting.

The only complaint that I have about the set (although a comparatively minor one) is that only 25mm round bases were included, a la the now-defunct Chainmail product line. I used 25mm square bases for these figures, and have a set that's good for D&D's 1 inch = 5 feet scale.

Also, it seems that some of the figures were slow-cast, which results in making the metal different in texture and "thirsty" in places (that is, it absorbs paint like a sponge). But this is a general minor flaw in all the WotC figures that I have gotten so far. Perhaps if all the figures were fast-cast, the D&D miniatures line would still be alive and kicking.

If you try a washing technique for the drow skin- I use a light wash of liche purple and black- this covers up virtually every flaw. Overall, the figures take some work, but are good once finished.

                      Book Description

Most applications these days are at least somewhat network aware, but how do you protect those applications against common network security threats? Many developers are turning to OpenSSL, an open source version of SSL/TLS, which is the most widely used protocol for secure network communications. The OpenSSL library is seeing widespread adoption for web sites that require cryptographic functions to protect a broad range of sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and other financial transactions. The library is the only free, full-featured SSL implementation for C and C++, and it can be used programmatically or from the command line to secure most TCP-based network protocols. Network Security with OpenSSL enables developers to use this protocol much more effectively. Traditionally, getting something simple done in OpenSSL could easily take weeks. This concise book gives you the guidance you need to avoid pitfalls, while allowing you to take advantage of the library?s advanced features. And, instead of bogging you down in the technical details of how SSL works under the hood, this book provides only the information that is necessary to use OpenSSL safely and effectively. In step-by-step fashion, the book details the challenges in securing network communications, and shows you how to use OpenSSL tools to best meet those challenges. As a system or network administrator, you will benefit from the thorough treatment of the OpenSSL command-line interface, as well as from step-by-step directions for obtaining certificates and setting up your own certification authority. As a developer, you will further benefit from the in-depth discussions and examples of how to use OpenSSL in your own programs. Although OpenSSL is written in C, information on how to use OpenSSL with Perl, Python and PHP is also included. OpenSSL may well answer your need to protect sensitive data. If that?s the case, Network Security with OpenSSL is the only guide available on the subject.

                      4 out of 5 stars SSL programming.......2007-01-09

This book was a valuable resource in implementing Secure Sockets, it would have been difficult to finish my product without it.

5 out of 5 stars SSL made Clear.......2007-01-09

I worked on a LAMP project with 'C' switching application behind it. This book clearly described what I needed and how to do it. Very good resource.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book to Use When Writing an SSL app........2005-05-28

If you have little or no experience with SSL, or OpenSSL, get this book. It explains the principles behind SSL, and then goes on to cover OpenSSL. The companion website opensslbook.com contains the latest examples.

The only drawbacks to the book are the way that the authors cover random number generators for windows, (totally excludes the MS crypto function cryptgenrand(), in favor of the Author's own entropy collection system), and the creation of certificates could have been covered a little better. I also kept having to consult the Openssl API documentation for clarification on certain things, but overall this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars openssl programming cleanly explained.......2004-10-12

The book starts with a general introduction of encryption in general, then SSL protocol in general. Then openssl command line interface is introduced with some easy to follow examples. Later openssl programming is explained in detail.

As the only free SSL programming library with source code available, openssl is notorious for its undocumented/underdocumented/misdocumented manuals. Starting a software project using openssl without prior experience is often a painful experience if you simply rely on the manuals coming with the source code. Given thousands of interfaces/data structures, it is an overwhelming job to understand openssl in depth. Your best bet is usually reading the sample source code that comes with package, but often it leaves lots of questions - what does this api do? Why use this one? Under what circumstances should I use this one? You may rely on openssl mailing list, but answer is not guaranteed and you have to do your own home work first.

So come this book finally. It explains (using many examples) most interfaces a typical openssl programmer would use in reality. It is a really easy to read from chapter to chapter since the authors apparently try to explain most api using a short and clear example.

I wish when the next version comes out, it can do:

                      1. fix typos. Yeah, it does contain some typos. Good proofreading is needed.

                      2. Include topics in openssl 0.9.7. Like CRL.

                      3. What's going on under hood. How openssl code is organized, how interface control of flow goes. This helps understand the openssl library and debugging as well.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-11-23

OpenSSL is a terrific programming resource, but the online documentation on it
is hard to understand and index. This book brings most of it all together, and
provides enough examples to answer most of your questions.

One thing that it lacks is tie-ins with Java; most of its examples are in Perl
and Python. I'm currently trying to see if certain ideas can be implemented in Java.

A great book, and great read!
