Book Description

The temptation is to start with a classic wisecrack: One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I don't know.

But Groucho Marx, like Stefan Kanfer's superb biography, consists of much more than just jokes. Underneath the most famous Marx brother's oneliners and carefree attitude was a life dominated by deep sadness, professional dissatisfaction, and personal turmoil.

Beginning with the Marx Brothers' family heritage and their youth in turn-of-the-century New York, we see Julius and his brothers Adolph and Leonard become Groucho, Harpo, and Chico. We go backstage as they develop their routines in vaudeville, on Broadway, and, finally, in Hollywood. Groucho's story unfolds against the backdrop of the changing world around him and his star-studded milieu, which includes other classic comic figures such as Charlie Chaplin and W. C. Fields, as well as great names like Ben Hecht, George Gershwin, and even T. S. Eliot. Kanfer delves into Groucho's complicated relationships with the people around him — his failed marriages, his destructive behavior toward his children, his clashes with the self-indulgent Chico. The Brothers become the biggest movie stars in the world — a success bitterly followed by slow decline as age, years of profligacy, and ego all catch up with them. Finally, we witness Groucho's extraordinary resurrection — coming back from the career-dead to host the television quiz show You Bet Your Life, which cements his legendary status in American culture.

Groucho Marx proved that comedy could be raucous, sophisticated, and wildly unexpected — all at once. Groucho raises the curtain on this icon of twentieth-century cynicism and irreverence in an authoritative, affectionate, and unsparingly honest look behind the cigar.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2003-10-06

Having previously read "Harpo Speaks," "Growing up with Chico," "Groucho and Me," and Lillian Roth's "I'll cry tomorrow" and having seen all the Marx brothers films, I honestly felt like this book was merely a hodgepodge of all those previously mentioned sources. There are parts where he quotes word for word what Lillian Roth wrote about working on Animal Crackers, or what Maxine Marx said in her book, and tries to pass it off as his own. There are also long sections where he just reprints dialouge from the films and TV show. That said, the parts involving Grouchos personality and his relationships with women and his family were totally new to me, and very interesting (although I do agree with the earlier reviewer who said it seemed that the author did not like Groucho and tried to paint him negatively.) I don't regret reading this book, true fans will probably know enough to form their own opinions. But I reccomend a number of other Marx-related books before this one. ("Harpo Speaks" being my #1)

4 out of 5 stars A good book on one of the greatest showmen.......2002-02-16

This biography traces the life of one of the most prolific actors/comedians of the 20th Century - Groucho Marx. We are introduced to the man behind the great (perhaps the greatest?)comic genius.

Groucho (né Julius Henry) Marx was the third son of German Jew Immigrants in New York. His mother Minnie (the driving force behind the Marx Brothers) was influenced by her brother Al Shean who had a reasonably successful career seeing which Minnie decided to enter her five sons into showbiz. After various permutations and combinations and numerous failures and struggles, the Marx Brothers made an indelible name for themselves first in Vaudeville (stage shows featuring a variety of dance, song, humor, and magic) and then in Broadway and the movies as The Marx Brothers (Chico, Harpo Groucho and Zeppo). The brothers had a glorious career from the 1920s to the 1940s despite the depression in between.

Groucho later went on to have a highly successful solo career as a radio (and later TV) host of the quiz show "You bet your life" for which he won critical acclaim.

The sad part about Groucho's life was that it seemed to be based on the dictum of why-have-it-simple-when-you-can-have-it-complicated. Though extremely successful professionally, Groucho had an unhappy personal life especially with regard to the women in his life (mother, wives and daughters). His three marriages were nowhere nearly as successful as his life in the theatre / movies. Groucho's relationship with and (ill?)treatment at the hands of Erin (his female companion towards the end of his life) is also touched upon. The author carefully offers no comments on Erin's behaviour towards Groucho.

The book is on-the-whole well researched though at some points it does seem that Kanfer wants to hurry through for lack of details. Kanfer bases his information on writings of and interviews with Groucho's peers, friends, relatives (especially his daughter Miriam). The reader is given minute details of the comedians life including how he got his nickname - he used to carry a `grouch' bag during his vaudeville days (the `o' at the end of each of the brothers nicknames was taken from a popular comic strip of those days, Sherlocko the Monk ).

The book is interspersed with the quotable quotes Groucho made personally and in his broadway hits and movies such as Duck Soup and Animal Crackers. Though most of the quotes are very incisive and humorous, there are portions in the book where the reader is given an overdose of dialogues from the movies.

After reading the book, Groucho's visage (moustache/thick eyebrows/cigar-in-the-mouth) and his inimitable quotes (`Outside of a dog a book is a mans best friend, inside of a dog it is too dark to read') remain firmly entrenched in the readers mind.

4 out of 5 stars The Magic Word is "Enigmatic".......2001-07-17

This is a fascinating...and frequently sad account of "the life and times" of a truly great comic artist. First with his brothers and then on his own, he created a public persona wearing a "hard clown mask", a persona which he then became in his private life. Eventually and literally, on-screen and off, what people saw is what they got. Kanfer examines Marx's relentlessly unpleasant relationships with his mother and with his brothers, his inadequacies as a husband and father, his immaturity in "matters of women, money, and power", the impact of Irving Thalberg at MGM on the Marx Brothers movies made at that studio, and the agonies Marx experienced during his later years. Many (most?) of his most painful wounds were self-inflicted but, as Kanfer suggests, Marx also did great damage to family members. How ironic that someone capable of making so many people howl with delight would be "incapable of expressing strong emotion, no matter how deep." That is a realm within Marx which even Kanfer was unable to penetrate.

3 out of 5 stars OK Bio.......2001-07-04

I enjoyed reading this biography of Marx, but I have to agree with the reviewers who claimed it was light on research. It also seems that the author disliked his subject and went out of his way to present him in an unflattering light. Otherwise, it seems to cover his life from the cradle to the grave adequately, but without brilliance.

5 out of 5 stars Read it.......2001-06-14

An amazing account of an amazing man and his career. The first sections, in which Groucho steps from boy soprano singer to hilarious vaudeville acts that carry him and his brothers to Broadway and cinema stardom, are particularly well written. Kanfer elegantly descibes the marxistic method of success, based on tradition, originality, audience feed-back and perfection.

Like most GM biographers, Kanfer uses many of the well-known gags from shows and films. One important gag is missing, though. In the Carnegie Hall performance in 1971 - which Kanfer uses as the starting point for his story - Groucho at age 79 appears in a solo act, going on for hours with escalating intensity, funnier than ever. I remember I neclected school for listening to the recording of 'An Evening with Groucho' until my sister stole the double LPs. At the end of the three-hour show, during storms of applauses, you can barely hear a tiny female voice asking Groucho:

'Wanna do some more?' 'What?' 'Wanna do more stuff?' 'Some more what? I haven't started yet.'

    5 out of 5 stars A picture-packed look at their careers.......2004-08-19

This large and attractive book is an excellent history of the lives and films of the famous Marx Brothers. Beginning with a modest treatment of their early years, the story really hits its strides with the boys' films, giving you an excellent idea of what each film was about and what its strengths and weaknesses are. After that, the book quickly follows them through there declining years and eventual deaths.

Overall, I thought that this was an excellent book. It's not a biography, and if that is what you are looking for, then you must look elsewhere. But, as a look at the Marx's careers, it is very good indeed. The book is crammed full of black-and-white photos, some large enough to fill two pages of this 12"x9" book! Plus, I found the treatment of their careers to be quite interesting and informative. I highly recommend this book to you!

    Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

      Book Description

This text offers a distinctive introduction to sport in contemporary society, drawing on recent developments in sociological theory and research, particularly in relation to debates about culture and consumption. The book argues that sport can be seen as central to the "economies of signs and space" of late modernity in which a concern with the body as an object of contemplation and improvement, and not just an instrument for getting things done, increasingly informs images in the mass media, politics and everyday life.

What a condescending, supercilious and smarmy piece of crap. Even the title is a slap at bodybuilders, many of whom work very hard to perfect their physiques. Would Klein have written similarly about B.K.S. Iyengar, the world's great yoga teacher, who practices yoga
6 hours a day? No, because he is a revered figure. But bodybuilders are an easy target, so safe to bash. The fact is that bodybuilders are smart, disciplined and have a highly developed skill.

        3 out of 5 stars Predetermined interpretation.......2006-05-09

As a lifter (but not a bodybuilder), and trained as an anthropologist, I expected this to be a fun and illuminating book, especially in light of some of the other reviews. I think this is a decent book--Klein writes well and captures gym flavor decently--but not a good one. It seems to me that Klein had already decided, prior to his empirical work, that bodybuilding was an outgrowth of or response to a sense of inadequacy. As far as I can tell, he never puts his interpretation to any kind of test: rather, he merely picks out those facts that support his interpretation and glosses them with a great deal of unsupported speculation. There is actually counterevidence to some of his claims in the book, but he never deals with it as such. All in all, I think it is a shame to spend seven years doing fieldwork only to rehearse a fairly standard bias against bodybuilders. If you read this book, balance it with another Roland S. Persson's short book Big Bad & Stupid or Big Good & Smart, which is a more controlled and better evidenced study. Persson's book is hard to find, but exposes some of the kinds of bias implicit in Klein's study.

5 out of 5 stars an interesting book for anybody who weight trains.......2005-09-25

When I was a little kid Use to marvel at many of the bodybuilders. Arnold Swartzengger was my childhood hero. I bought flex magazine regulary. I bought Weider training videos. When I was 12 years old I bought all this bodybuilding stuff and I wanted to look like Arnold when I grew up. Well somewhere along the way I lost interest in bodybuilding and got more interested in sports in high school. This book explains why young teenager boys 7are lured to bodybuilding because they are insecure and want to make up for it by being very muscular and strong. This book did an excellent job of explaining the lifestyle of the bodybuilder and the motives why they became bodybuilders. I found much of the information true, however on some occasions I think the author's analysis was flawed. For instance the author said something along the lines that bodybuilders just have big muscles, but don't have enough strength to lift very heavy weights. So they just look strong, unlike powerlifters who can lift very heavy weights. This is not true bodybuilders don't lift very heavy weights because they wan't to isolate muscles rather than try to lift the most weight. Many bodybuilders could bench press just as much as a powerlifter if they used bad form, arched their back, and wore bench shirts. Other than that this book was fantastic! This book reveals how bodybuilder is more like an addiction rather than dedication for many bodybuilders. Many bodybuilders couldn't stop lifting weights if they wanted to. It really is a depressing book to read. Bodybuilders spend as much as 8 hours a day in a gym some of that time training, some of socialicing. This book reveals how bodybuilders throw their life away to the gym and because of it they fail to develop the necessary friendships and social skills necessary for a healthy life. This book reveals bodybuilders are dirt poor and because of that they often resort to prostiution and selling steriods just to get by. I remeber my classmates telling me not to get into bodybuilding because most of them are gay, after reading this book I realize my friends were right and I am glad I didn't go into bodybuilding. This book reveals their is a lot more risks in bodybuilding besides steroids. Anyone who is seriously considering bodybuilding should read this book first so they know exactly the lifestyle they will be getting into.

5 out of 5 stars Readable format, intriguing study........2002-09-24

Insightful examination of an extreme manifestation of societal tendency, and how this reflects on gender construction in our society as a whole.
I purchased this book for use as one of the (many!) references for my thesis (on gender role traits and food selection.)
While probably not for a lay audience, this book is written in a very easy-to-read style for a study. Although I have to do hours and hours of reading every single day, I still found that this book held my interest.

        4 out of 5 stars Big Words.......2000-02-23

I found this book to be interesting and true when it comes to bodybuilding. It is not always an easy read. It may be better suited for someone in the industry or at least an anthropologist

          Description:
This study empirically investigated the motives of sport tourists who traveled internationally to participate in a hallmark Australian running event, the 2005 Gold Coast Airport Marathon. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that involvement and strength of motivation contributed to socio-psychological motivation while cultural experience and knowledge learning contributed to cultural-education motivation. Cultural experience was further explored through a consumer acculturation framework that led to development of the Cultural Learning Inventory (CLI). Analysis revealed that international participants desired to experience and learn nine specific aspects of the foreign destination's culture: transportation, housing, arts, language, food, media, currency, leisure activities and indigenous population. Hofstede's [(1980). Culture's consequences: International differences in work related values. Newbury Park, CA: Sage] cultural clusters were subsequently used to segment participants and MANOVA results revealed that while respondents did not differ on socio-psychological motives, respondents from cultural backgrounds dissimilar to Australian culture were more likely to agree that experiencing Australian culture and learning new information was appealing. These results indicate the duality of international marketing efforts for hallmark sport events. Convergent marketing strategies should be used to target specific segments in their sport communities, while divergent cultural marketing strategies should be utilised to target potential participants with different cultural backgrounds.

I'm not a puzzle person, but these short word searches are accessible enough to amuse me and my teenage kids. I especially enjoy discovering the creative details in the puzzles that make them more interesting to me than other word search puzzles.
