Photographer Ari Marcopoulos has made a career of capturing life on the cultural edge. From his beginnings as an artist working for Andy Warhol, Marcopoulos has been drawn to those who work and live outside of their contemporary society. Some of his more famous subjects include William Burroughs, the Beastie Boys, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In Transitions and Exits, Marcopoulos covers the life and times of the world's top young snowboarders with contemplative portraits, mountainous landscapes, and daredevil action shots.
The faces of these athletes lie somewhere between wholesome and ragamuffin, and they deliver us into a fascinating world of modern Peter Pans, filled with video games, black eyes, cheap beer, and cigarettes. But beyond the mere stuff of adolescents lies boyishness with a cause. Marcopoulos explains: "They are political in the way they shape their existence. Their lifestyle is financed by corporations and yet they live by their own rules outside of social norms.... In snowboarding there is nothing better than breaking the rules." The photographs illustrate a commitment to natural beauty, adventure, and athletic perfection, as well as capturing the family-like clan that develops in the many off-hours. Included is an enlightening interview between the photographer and curator-writer Louise Neri. --J.P. Cohen
Book Description
Wild man Ari Marcopoulos crossed time zones incessantly while documenting the non-linear lives of one of the first 21st-century tribes--snowboarders. Rell Sun once called surfers the Gypsies of the Earth because they travel more and consume less. Snowboarders are the evolutionary offshoots of these nomads, who follow the seasons in search of what is embedded in their DNA. Transitions and Exits documents much of the time these young nomads spend travelling to the Nirvana of fresh powder and perfect jumps. And the waiting in Purgatory: riders kindle their boredom with hours, even days of contemplation. It's the time when helicopters are grounded, low pressures are laying new carpets of snow, and the weather channel is only hinting at what's to come. In snowboarding there are many prodigies. They are young, come from California and Scandinavia, earn serious dough for play, and speak a unified language around boarding and the latest electronic gadgets. But after hearing the crack of a compound fracture sounding off the walls of a perfectly shaped halfpipe--the price paid for mastering a new trick--it's hard to label this life glamorous. With photos and digital video grabs of the world's top snowboarders--all under the age of 25--Transitions and Exits showcases, in a hardcore artist's book and DVD, a brilliant take on a surreal world, much like Larry Clark's Tulsa.
Customer Reviews:
glossy porn.......2001-09-14
I purchased this book based on the reviews of customers and editorial reviews as well. Nowhere did I read about what was really in the book, which is glossy porn and drug use. If this is what you want then by all means buy the book. But if you are looking for good shots of snowboarders, any information at all about snowboarding, or really impressive photography, look elsewhere. There is no artistic content in this book. I could have taken these photos. This is not Maplethorpe or Liebowitz, it is just stupid. I just thought you should know what you are getting.
transglobal cultural ethos.......2001-02-24
Ari Marcopoulos poesseses a unique ability to keep pace with the transglobal cultural ethos that is constantly and belatedly appropriated by mainstream media. Transitions and Exits is a perfect example. Marcopoulos and Cortez have selected a group of images that both confirms and dispels the stereotypes of this exploding privileged community. Marcopoulos' subtle use of digital manipulation and compositing within some of the layouts reinforces his vision and the overall story of his subjects. Marcopoulos understands his medium and has achieved its potential yet again.
beyond the clichee.......2001-02-21
this book offers a radical new look at the world of snowboarding and, for that matter, specific aspects of youth culture in general. it's also beautifully photographed and avoids the usual stylistic clichees of snowboarding photography... marcopoulos seems to have followed the crusaders of corporation-sponsored "rebellion" and "individualism" over longer periods of time, getting familiar with the various protagonists and their lifestyle, thus gaining access to all areas. this results in a volume of images of touching intimacy and odd beauty. 'transitions and exits' could well become the thinking person's snowboarding bible. marcopoulos would deserve it.
On the Frontier.......2000-12-04
On the frontier of the snowboarder, mad dogs patrol. Ari Marcopoulos's photographs paint quite a picture of this crispy culture, from shattered spines to heavenly landscapes, busted faces to blue sky. He's an insider - travelling with these nomads from the Alps to Alaska, he's taken rolls of behind the scenes snapshots, along with large format landscapes and the money shots. It's an honest, evocative portrait of this nomadic culture.

Book Description
The rebirth of competition and the extensive 'exit' that has resulted are among the most important developments in Central Europe since the demise of communism. This book examines why, how, and to what extent enterprises have reduced in size or left the market altogether during the first years of the transition from socialism to capitalism in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland.

From the supplier: Push, panelback and exit polls are described and tips on making money calls, door-to-door campaigns and transition planning are provided. Push polls involve giving negative information about one candidate. Panelbacks involve calling previously interviewed persons to measure changes over time. Exit polls are conducted on voters exiting the poll area on election day. Money calls should be preceded by a letter, invitation or visit and it would be better to talk with voters in door-to-door campaigns. Transition planning in the campaign stage will only encourage back-stabbing.

Description:
This paper explores the relationship between innovation and the survival probability of manufacturing firms in the Netherlands, conditional on firm age and size. The empirical analysis combines firm level data on innovation, derived from the second Community Innovation Survey, and on the date of exit, from the Business Register of all firms active in the Netherlands. To estimate the survival probability of a firm we use a non-parametric approach, based on the calculation of Transition Probability Matrices over different time periods. The results show that innovation has a positive and significant effect on the probability of firms' survival. This effect increases over time and is conditional on firm age and size; we observe that small and young firms are the most exposed to the risk of exit, as found in earlier studies, but also those that most benefit of innovation to survive in the market, especially in the longer term.

A Book for Hardcore Fans.......2005-06-12
Devoted Monkees fans will love this book to relive the Monkees fun of the 80s. I got it years after it was published from a friend and reading it, I found myself reminiscing about 1986 and all the fun I had as a young fan. The best part of the book was the surprise I got seeing a photo of *myself* in it in the fans pages!! So if you went to Davy's concerts in the 80s, you too might be in the book. The book is great for a trip down memory lane, however it really is overly Photo-Shopped and artistically very out of date--but still it's fun.
Graphics artists' delight in 1992!.......2005-05-14
I try to ignore the strange alliteration of this book title, while flipping through the image-packed pages with a sometime scrapbook feel to it. This is a visual book, pure and simple. This paperback, coffeebook-table-sized book on nice quality slick paper, is a delight in terms of visual gimickry using the Monkees themselves as the primary subject; this book is really for the hard core Monkee fans who are the completists in terms of their Monkees book collections.
My biggest complaint about the book is throughout it, the text is somewhat scattered and hard to read becuase of the bright colors on the layout and the montage of graphics. The graphics artists really show off their stuff using Photoshop and other software on their Macs, but since 1992, graphics arts has come a very long way so some of the work seems rather dated and perhaps, odd to the user who is accustomed to current graphics arts in the early 21st century.
If you are geared toward creative artistic visuals and distortions of the Monkees faces, such as in caricatures, it is for you. There are also some rare pictures I have not see elsewhere, even online. The date of the pictures of the Monkees, their friends and family range from the 60s to the late 80s.
I would rate this book as very strange in visual content overall, but definitely for the fan at heart. You do get some good pictures from Davy's personal photo collection, nice family pictures of his daughters, for example. I think Davy Jones still sells this book on his website for a decent price. Go for it if you are big fan, otherwise, I would recommend other books, such as Micky Dolenz' biography.
Just for your info about my ratingL I am ranking it with 2 stars because there are duplicate reviews here with a higher rating. I think 3 stars is probably fair enough.
I'm A Believer!.......2000-05-25
This book is packed with terrific pictures of Davy and the rest of the Monkees. Davy is his usual, witty and charming self! A must for any Monkees fan!
The Monkees - legend continues.......2000-03-31
Now we came back to 60th... We return to the youth again, to surprising songs and melodies the cheerful smiles of Big American Four... It's Davy, Davy Jones here with his wonderful book! This book is sad yet happy, comical yet serious, it's like a tornado of emotions rolled up into one great monkee! Rare photos include
'Mutant Monkees' is great!.......1999-11-11
I helped do some of the photo/color designs that are in the book, so what can I say, but I love it! It is a very good book, regardless of me. Lots of great photos, designs, comments by Davy and memories. It's a must for any Monkees fan's library.

Hypnotize yourself with the Mutant Master.......2005-02-20
Book 18 of this Space Opera is the beginning of a trilogy of adventures with an Evil Mutant Master.
Monterny is a mutant capable of mind control - a type of hypnotism that can even control the minds of Perry's elite Mutant Corps. Monterny's unique power to read and control the thoughts of others extends far enough so that he may control the actions of his evil mutant corps while safely hidden in his lair in Salt Lake City, Utah - and his operatives are in the Gobi Desert! Monterny begins to try to take over as world dictator by bringing down Rhodan's General Cosmic Company, and due to a small glitch he fails. But Monterny keeps trying.
The 2nd part of the trilogy continues with number 20 - "Mutants Vs Mutants".
I've never been this impressed by a series. I'm reminded of old cliffhangers like "Buck Rodgers" or "Flash Gordon" when reading these marvelous books. This series is still being published in Germany and is now well over 2,000 volumes. It's too bad American publishers stopped these after only about 120 books. I had to learn to speak, read, and write German in order to continue reading Perry Rhodan.
This book also contains another editorial, another science fiction movie section, and another fan letters page. And there are extra stories - one continuing adventure, similar to a serial, and some "Shock Shorts" - continuing a series of SF short stories at the end of each book. Although these stories have nothing to do with Perry Rhodan, they are worth looking at. It's well worth reading the entire Rhodan series.

Book Description
Ron Cody's SAS Functions by Example is a must-have reference for anyone who writes programs in Base SAS. From ABS to ZIPSTATE, more than 180 of the most useful SAS language functions are clearly defined and illustrated with fully annotated working programs. Written as both a reference manual and an instructional guide, this book's features include functions arranged by category; coverage of 48 functions that are NEW for SAS 9.1; a tutorial on Perl regular expressions; extensive sample programs featuring each of the functions; tips to show you novel ways to use functions or to use several functions together to achieve the result you want; a list of programs, an alphabetic list of all the functions in the book, and a comprehensive index of functions and tasks. Beginning and seasoned SAS users will benefit from this comprehensive and useful reference guide to SAS functions!
Customer Reviews:
Great reference.......2007-06-13
I have been using SAS for about 18 months and I have found this book to be the best reference in our arsenal. The multiple examples provided with the code explanations set this book apart from references I have found online or through SAS.com. I found the Chapters 1 and 2 essential to my work with string variables (in my case, mostly address information) but all of the other chapters have been useful. Once you outgrow the SAS Primer, this is a must.
An excellent resource.......2006-10-10
An excellent book. For each function, the author provides, not just explanations, but also complete examples and mini-programs, with inputs, code, and actual results. The best resource on SAS functions that I am aware of.
Handy book for those with SAS Experience.......2006-03-26
I used this book the first few hours that I received it. This is not a stand alone book for those that want to learn SAS functions. I think this text is best suited for people who use SAS regularly and needs a handy reference while programming. Skimming through the book would also provide the reader with an understanding of what functions SAS is capable of doing. However, it is highly likely that you will not use all of the programs, most of the programs are pretty useful especially to those that are required to manipulate data in SAS.
Solid reference. Belongs in every SAS library.......2005-12-07
I have been using SAS for five years. I have experience with base SAS, Sas/STAT, and have applied it in numerous areas from data presentation to heavier statistical analysis. There may be others with even more SAS knowledge who can write a more directed review.
The hallmark of a good function reference (for any language, not just SAS) is that it teaches you a great deal, and still has more to offer you when you return to it later. Additionally, the book should supply examples different in spirit from the official documentation's examples. Of course, all arguments to functions should adequately described and the book be free from material error. If a book can accomplish all of these objectives in a reasonable space, it deserves the coveted spot next to your system!
One more thing: a function reference must be complete, providing detailed descriptions of even the most routine functions. This is hard to do well, and although this aspect may be rather quotidian, it is helpful to know that if I ever forgot the order of arguments of a useful SAS function, I can turn to this reference. A good function reference eases the memory by letting good programmers focus on solving problems rather than memorizing arcana.
It is difficult to fulfill all these objectives, yet Cody does so admirably.
The book covers not only text functions, but also random numbers, call routines, the new State and Zip code functions, as well as functions for managing arrays, files, and so much more.
Knowing your functions thoroughly saves you time writing data step code that 're-invents the wheel'. Whenver I have a new challenge, I peruse this book first for examples.
Keep this book near your system. It will make you a stronger SAS programmer. (revised 1/06)
Too simple too narrow.......2005-10-10
This may be a good reference book if your entire SAS experiences have been or will be dealing with text characters without any messy computation or you have never and will never write your own code based on new algorithms like what we are encountering everyday in academic under the supervision of innovative professors, or if your entire job is exclusive to handle one or two SAS procedures.
If your job or your mind is not so boring, then this book is probably NOT a good reference. A simple example, after you read the whole book, you DO NOT know how to find the probability, say P(X
<=x), of a particular distribution X given x, nor could you know how to find a quartile. Even though this book emphasizes on functions dealing with characters, you will not know from this book how to put together two character variables. The author put a whole chapter telling you how to generate Normal and Uniform random variables while didn't bother to enumerate the ways to generate other distributions. You do not know how to generate a binomial or a Poisson or a Gamma or a Beta or a Chi-square ... I can hardly imagine what these SAS experts are doing everyday with SAS? We do not need a book or a whole chapter of a book to learn how to create Normal or Uniform distribution. A Google search gives more comprehensive results than Mr. Cody's whole chapter. What we need for a reference book is a complete list of all available SAS random variable generating functions which takes less than one page, which will save readers a great deal of time on no-clue searching, which is exactly what a reference book all about, and which unfortunately is exactly what this book has failed to do. A GOOD reference book should go even more beyond. In addition to the complete list, a friendly author would also let readers know how to indirectly generate some distributions that could not be generated directly by existing SAS functions, Inverse Gamma is a good starting point since it is very popular in the Bayesian computation while no SAS function can create it directly.
Lacking of both basic and very useful functions is particularly not acceptable for this book because allegedly it has been especially designed to serve for any level SAS users.
Today there are tons of people who claim they are SAS professionals, have been using SAS for xyz years. I personally know a handful of them. Most of them fall into one of the following categories:
1. Doing exclusive with SAS data step, and not familiar with anything else;
2. Working with one or two SAS proc's, and not knowing anything else;
3. Displaying SAS graphs in a fashion way, and not knowing anything else.
4. Adding some lines to existing SAS programs routinely, and thus believing he is an experienced SAS programmer, even though he is highly unlikely to know how to write a simple code on his own, for example to compute the sum of integers from 1 to 100, without using Data step.
.....
Those people have hardly exposed to anything outside their narrow and exclusive SAS environment and if those people say well to this book, you make your own decision.
I am not a senior SAS user, but I have SAS Certified Advanced Programmer Credential on hands and I say this is not a good reference book;
I am not doing something elementary or routinely, and I say this is not a good reference book. You make your own decision.
