Book Description
Davies begins his study with a comparison of theatrical and cinematic space showing that the dramatic resources of cinema are essentially spatial. Central chapters focus on Welles' Macbeth, Othello, and Chimes at Midnight; Olivier's Henry V, Hamlet, and Richard III; Brook's King Lear; and Kurosawa's Throne of Blood. Davies then discusses the dramatic problems the sources for these films pose for the film maker and he examines how these films influenced later theatrical stagings. The book concludes by exploring the demands that distinguish the work of a Shakespearean stage actor from his counterpart's in film.

"How will you defuse a tense situation?".......2004-11-28
"An Action a Day Keeps Global Capitalism Away" by Mike Hudema contains 52 actions--which range from Gas-Mask Car Shopping to Radioactive Garbage-Picking. Some of the actions are familiar to me (the Candlelight Vigil, for example), and others were not (Radiohead). Action 47--Corporate Crime Fighters stresses that superheroes "draw media attention." Recently, "Father Xmas" and "Batman" protested rights of fathers by donning costumes and scaling the walls of Buckingham Palace. I wonder if they read this book? Each action includes a description, the rationale behind it, and a "what you need" section. Each action is also rated for fun, risk, and resources. Clearly most--not all--of the actions call for at least a small group of people. That said--this book is probably best for a group of activists who are looking for fresh new ways to express their political opinions. The book also includes a resource section that refers to websites of many activist groups--displacedhuman
An Amazing Activist Resource.......2004-05-04
I just read a copy of An Action a Day and was absolutely floored. The content is highly engaging, funny at times and extremely useful. As a long time activist I am always looking for new ways to build community and present issues and Hudema's guide does just that. It is insightful, is designed both as an aide and to prevent activist burnout and can be used by anyone from a long term activist to an eager beginner.
Thank you for adding some life and fun to organizing!!!!!

Very Helpful.......2002-03-16
I couln't beat more than 3 games with the guide i beat all of the scenarioson the first try. You can't have roller coaster tycoon with out the guide.
More of a handy reference.......2001-12-13
Rather than providing a multitude of new insight into the game play of 1999's best selling game, this guide offers lists and hints for the scenarios, rides, and features. This book would have better recieved if there hadn't been more active user groups with their own game hints. For what it is intended, the book is thorough enough to be of sufficient benefit for those who either are new to RollerCoaster Tycoon or just plain like anything published about RCT.
There are some section detailing good strategy choices regarding placing ride lines and other items like janitors around the park. These sections are pretty good. The sections which detail the scenarios and how to win them are a little more vague. A better choice here would have been a discussion of how to get the most people to remain in the park or how to go about raising park values in general.
The other thing which stands in the way of a strategy guide for RollerCoaster Tycoon is the availability of cheater programs for the game from third parties. This book does well enough as a strategy guide but is reduced by largely external factors. In short, this book is mainly for the enthusiast who wants more RCT.
A LITTLE HELPFUL.......2001-06-07
I agree with hotrod4x5 and not those that gave this book 1 or 2 stars. This does help you improve your rollercoaster if it's to intense for your guests. Another one is how to build better queues. The advice in this book keeps repeating almost in every page one like you should never put food stalls near an intense ride. The rest is information you already know. It helped hotrod4x5, it helped me, and it should help you. Go buy it!
Ignore The Naysayers.......2001-06-07
I fully agree with hotrod4x5. This strategy guide does help you improve your rollercoaster if it's to intense for your guests. Another one is how to build better queues. The advice keeps repeating almost in every page one like you should never put food stalls near an intense ride. The rest is information you already know. This book helped hotrod4x5, it helped me, and it should help you. Go buy it!
Good book to help you get started..........2001-02-20
People have really bashed this book, so I thought I would give my 2 cents. To say the book is not at all helpful is mis-leading. Indeed the book is shallow, but it does offer some good advice that anyone playing the game would benefit from.
IE.: When should I use an entertainer? The book tells you.
IE.: How can I make my roller coaster start above ground level? The book tells you.
IE.: My roller coaster is too intense and no will ride it, how do I fix it? There is more, useful, helpful advice.
Ok, yes you could figure this out eventually after playing the game, but the keyword is-eventually. Get the book, find out now.
The bad part: The editor did a poor job, there are typos and grammar errors, but these can be overlooked. Some of the advice on how to beat certain scenarios is virtually useless, just repeating the same advice over and over.
Do you like the game and like to read? You should like the book. Perhaps the bashers don't like to read and wanted the answers simply listed in a Q&A style, I don't know.
It helped me, it can help you, go ahead, get it.
I would have given it 4 stars without the grammar errors.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Guide.......2004-12-18
It would seem a difficult and daunting challenge to create a complete guide to RollerCoaster Tycoon that could fully assess and explain all the small yet very important details in a massive game like RCT. Of course, the folks at Prima have, yet again, met and surpassed this challenge. This guide discusses everything, and gives a massive amount of information about each topic. In addition, it exclusively (I believe) features many useful and informative lists, as well as many useful strategies for effective game play. This said, however, does not mean that it's not fun to read, for I found it incredibly enjoyable, much more so than a manual. The authors have a subtle, suppressed sense of humor that helps keep the text interesting, while explaining clearly boring topics. It reads more like a book than a many other guides do; I could hardly put it down. I believe the only drawback is the fact that it is (except for the covers) printed in black-and -white, which can make the pictures seem a little degraded. Pictures greatly help the reader's understanding of the text. For the high-res obsessed, they won't be impressive, but they serve their purpose well enough. For beginners and pros alike, this guide is a great addition to one's shelf, and you may even find yourself reading it more than once.
For those who want more technical information:
220 pages (not including the three introductory pages), 21 chapters. In addition, lists of:
1. All 40 rides with strategies and information for each.
2. Tips and strategies for building all custom non-coasters(coasters are too broad to do lists such as these)
3. All available scenery and themes, both categories, and the individual items, with prices.
4. All attractions, stalls and stands, with statistics and placement strategies for each.
5. Everything that can be purchased, with its price.
6. Easter eggs (no cheats for this game) that have guests do fun things.
7. Informative but brief facts for beating each of the 86 scenerios.
Also, here are some things included in the guide, although in the guide really has way too much to list.
1. Detailed explanation of park finances.
2. Ways to ensure guests have fun.
3. Tricks for maximizing the efficiency of your employees.
Hope you gained at least some knowledge from reading my review, MRW, 12 years of age.
A fun game.......2003-08-24
Its a fun game. If you like to build things and problem solve this is totally for you..
Great!.......2003-05-24
You need this book when you first get this type of tycoon game. Or if you think you are so good, get the book, and then see how much more you know now. YOUM NEED THIS!
Good game but..............2002-11-03
Rct 2 is nothing but amazing and even better when they team up with one of the biggest amusement parks. But this game was designed for scenario player in mind.It would have been nice to open a park without goals or restrictions.I'm a freeform player and so far the best freeform games are the sims and zoo tycoon.
Easy to use and very informative!.......2002-10-28
I recently purchased the official strategy guide for roller coaster tycoon and I really enjoyed reading the book. I've been playing the game now for over three years and the book helped me tweak my playing style just a little bit to really conquer the scenarios.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It is very informative and easy to use. It has a perfect sense of humor for the RCT fans as you read through the book.
I would encourage everyone that loves Roller Coaster Tycoon to add this book to your cart and enjoy reading about the game you have come to love!

A Great Buy.......2007-01-10
My husband and I are rollercoaster tycoon fanatics and this guide was extremely helpful. We learned a lot about building coasters and parks. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who plays the game as it will give you great insight on how to improve your parks.
A great guide if you can read.......2006-07-25
now for some people this book might be confusing because there so used to there little colering books but in truth this is a really good guide even though it does repeat it's self alot but thats just to make sure those people who dont grasp stuff on the first go get in the end. I haven't read the part that tells you how to beat the game so i cant really rate it but as for the rest of the book it does go much deeper into the other aspects then the manual did and the ride and atractions chapter is very helpful for pricing right. I read this thing in two days just to see what I got out of it and I noticed that I didn't get board and just walk away like I always did with the games manual which was good cause i did learn some really valuable stuff.
so here's the summery:
Pros: easy to read, good info, cheats, a walkthough, and free downloads for things like coasters and building.
Cons: None really altough he repeats himself alot but thats about it.
Final Thought: A good buy for those who are having some trouble or just like knowing it all.
So not worth it..........2006-06-23
The directions are very confusing...
The subjects covered are unneeded and repetative...
The ride/shop lists are impossible to navigate...
The directions for the Scenarios are completely useless (especially La La Land, which I haven't been able to complete)...
So, the verdict is...
Don't buy this guide. It's horribly done and is a waste of money...

Helpful.......2007-01-10
This may or may be needed if you have the original RollerCoaster Tycoon. I liked the original RollerCoaster Tycoon and was pleased when number 2 came out. I like number 2 better than number 3. The Prima Stategy Guides are not perfect -- incomplete in some ways and too informative in places where very little is needed. However, my overall opinion is that they are very worthwhile. I own the Prima Strategy Guide for all three RollerCoaster Tycoon games. .

The mark of a craftsman is his familiarity with his tools, the speed with which he can use them to solve simple problems, and his cleverness in using them to solve more complicated challenges. The latest edition of Unix Power Tools explores the standard Unix tools in greater depth than ever, and with better coverage of Linux, FreeBSD, and even the Darwin environment of Mac OS X. It's also been improved by the addition of sections on Perl and Python, programming languages that can often solve Unix problems more adeptly than any specific utility. This detail-filled book distinguishes itself from other guides for Unix gurus with its organizational structure (it's a series of articles that can be absorbed sequentially or individually) and carefully designed and executed index. Like its esteemed predecessors, this book is one you will keep handy.
The authors have achieved a nearly ideal balance in the pages of this book. It's not just a collection of recipes (such collections tend to leave you hanging if you want to do something a little differently), it's not just a book of documentation (books like that have application mainly as references for people who know a lot already), and it's not just a conceptual how-to guide. Unix Power Tools is all of those things, and the overall effect is impressive indeed. If you work with any flavor of Unix, whatever your level of experience, you will benefit by having this book. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to work efficiently, elegantly, and creatively with the Unix tool suite, as well as (to a lesser extent) with Perl and Python scripts. Tips and strategies on customization, document generation, process management, and networking abound in this wisdom-rich volume.
Book Description
With the growing popularity of Linux and the advent of Darwin, Unix has metamorphosed into something new and exciting. No longer perceived as a difficult operating system, more and more users are discovering the advantages of Unix for the first time. But whether you are a newcomer or a Unix power user, you'll find yourself thumbing through the goldmine of information in the new edition of Unix Power Tools to add to your store of knowledge. Want to try something new? Check this book first, and you're sure to find a tip or trick that will prevent you from learning things the hard way. The latest edition of this best-selling favorite is loaded with advice about almost every aspect of Unix, covering all the new technologies that users need to know. In addition to vital information on Linux, Darwin, and BSD, Unix Power Tools 3rd Edition now offers more coverage of bash, zsh, and other new shells, along with discussions about modern utilities and applications. Several sections focus on security and Internet access. And there is a new chapter on access to Unix from Windows, addressing the heterogeneous nature of systems today. You'll also find expanded coverage of software installation and packaging, as well as basic information on Perl and Python. Unix Power Tools 3rd Edition is a browser's book...like a magazine that you don't read from start to finish, but leaf through repeatedly until you realize that you've read it all. Bursting with cross-references, interesting sidebars explore syntax or point out other directions for exploration, including relevant technical details that might not be immediately apparent. The book includes articles abstracted from other O'Reilly books, new information that highlights program tricks and gotchas, tips posted to the Net over the years, and other accumulated wisdom. Affectionately referred to by readers as "the" Unix book, UNIX Power Tools provides access to information every Unix user is going to need to know. It will help you think creatively about UNIX, and will help you get to the point where you can analyze your own problems. Your own solutions won't be far behind.
Customer Reviews:
What a Wonderful Book!.......2007-10-02
I've worked in IT for 20+ years, and this is one of the best books I've found. What an index! And even the text of the book has reference "pointers" (for lack of a better term) sprinkled throughout it. Even if you don't initially find what you are looking for, you can usually read a couple of paragraphs and find a link to what you need. This book is a "keeper!"
The UNIX bible!.......2007-05-13
Back in 1995 I started working at a client and all the UNIX guys had this book on their desk. I was a newbie at that time and the book helped me out a lot. It was clear and to the point. There is so much useful information. Recently I got my own copy because I had to jump back into the UNIX world and having this book around make me feel like I can handle any task that may be required. This is a must have if you want to dabble or become a pro in UNIX.
True to the Unix philosophy.......2007-05-12
Here is a quote taken from _Unix_Power_Tools_ which demonstrates the
attitude, shared by the authors, that unix allows you to make things
easier. "''Ugh!', you say, 'that's just what I hate about UNIX. All
these long filenames and options I can't remember. Who wants to type
all that stuff!' Precisely. That's why UNIX makes it so easy to
create custom commands, in the form of aliases and shell scripts."
Unix Power Tools is true to the spirit and philosophy of unix in
focusing on the command line environment with its rich abundance of
command interpreters, shell languages, system utilities, commands, and
the like. This is the realm of real power.
The book is aimed squarely at the user who wants to learn what's under
the hood of the unix (and Linux) system. It's not about how to change
your wallpaper or install the latest media player, or configure your
desktop, although this new edition may touch on these topics, too.
It's really about using unix to greatest advantage, about tapping its
real power, the power of its simplicity, of its flexibility, of
tapping into I/O streams, and using the tool-box approach to solving
real problems. It's about using 'pipes', 'redirection', and
'filters', to automate the big jobs.
My copy of this book is tattered from all the use it's had over the
last ten years. I'm always hunting it down, as my associates at work
are constantly borrowing it to help them solve a problem. That's
okay, though. I am ordering another copy, just for me. I'm curious
to see this new edition, which I understand has broader coverage of
the various unix flavors, including Linux, which I run
at home.
I would recommend this book to those who find unix intimidating, as
well as to the unix enthusiast. For anyone who ever wondered what the
fuss over unix was about, this book will certainly bring on an
epiphany. For between these covers is the greatest accumulation of
unix wisdom and know-how to be found in any book. The shear volume is
enough to elicit awe. But that's only part of its value, because such
an enormous accumulation of material might normally overwhelm the
reader, leaving him frustrated and unenlightened. Happily, this book
is so well organized, and the material so pleasingly presented, that
anyone will find it a pleasure to browse through and to mine
repeatedly for those precious tips, tricks, and methods that make
using unix so rewarding.
This is admittedly a pound heavy volume, and might be expected to
contain a lot of chaff with the grain. I have not found it so. The
authors have chosen the material well, and know their subject so
intimately and thoroughly, that I am left with a feeling of profound
respect. This is, in short, a book that is worthy of its subject; a
truly great book for a great OS.
I read another reviewer who avers this is the one book he would take
with him to a deserted island. I concur. It has taught me more than
any other unix book, and has made my work more efficient, and most
importantly, more interesting. I paid full retail for my copy of
Power Tools, and at the time, I thought it was a lot, but it has
repaid me many times over. It's the most indispensable unix book on
my shelf; a real gem.
pricey but worth it.......2006-06-23
I know this seems abit pricey but its worth it. I dont have the attention span needed to read most books cover-to-cover. Even though this book is huge I have browsed it all and read most of it. Multiple times! Each time I find some new tidbit to use.
The one unix book that I'd like to have if stranded all alone on an island with a linux system!!.......2006-05-01
I'm an analog IC designer moonlighting as a linux hacker (I'm actually addicted). I try to build software, write shell scripts and customize my desktop to death. I picked up this book a year or two back and I think I've probably used it almost every single day to look up something or the other. I probably own about 20 linux related books (more than my engineering books) but this is the one that I would run out with when the firealarm sounds. Here is my short summary of my feelings about this book.
- this book (primarily) caters to intermediate to advanced users
- I would still recommend this for linux beginners as a reference to check up when every other beginner book fails. There are introductory chapters on shell scripting which could put some of the dedicated shell scripting books to shame
- One of the fundamental holy grail that linux books try to achieve (and in which they often fail) is to find a good balance between breadth and depth - both qualities which the subject of Unix do not shy away from. So a Linux beginner picks up an introductory book which addresses just one linux issue and before he knows it-he has gathered enough knowledge and the book just picks up dust. Or he could pick up a book that claims to be a reference and skims over all the items with little depth and boom when he really needs information about a particular topic he finds that the book is too shallow. The "Unix Power Tools" book, I'm happy to say achieves this good balance between depth and breadth in very good measure. Ex. When I was confused about the intricacies of bash quoting or I/O redirecition, this book came to my rescue. The Unix command "find" which was buried under a 4-year old alias for me owing to it's complexities, suddenly developed a fascination for me after I discovered it's myriad use and value from the multiple pages that this book devoted to it's demystifcation.
- I bought the O'Reilly books - "Linux in a Nutshell" and "Essential system Administration" with the purpose of using them as references - The first one was just too shallow for my requirements and taste and I use it basically as a replacement for online man pages. The second one has it's very niche, but only in specific circumstances. So they have been put to use probably just 1/10th of what the "Power Tools" book has been put to
- I'm not a guy who is driven to write reviews i.e unless I am totally ecstatic or totally disgusted with a product and you probably have guessed where I stand with this one. I waited 1 or two years and I somehow felt that I owe this review to this book.
Average customer rating:

A must have!.......2007-09-20
I was recently thrown into the world of Unix at work. Like most people I was a windows programmer/user and didn't even know what Unix was. After reading the reviews, I picked this up and must say its the very best book on programing I've ever read. I have books on XML, XSLT, SQL SERVER, VB, C# and more, but none of this books taught be faster than Unix Shell Programming, Third Edition. This is a must have for the beginner!
Highly recommended.
Get "Classic Shell Scripting" by Arnold Robbins instead.........2007-03-07
This book is good, actually quite good, but for a beginner. The reason of the title and four stars is, for a beginner, I would still recomend the gold standard, age old "The UNIX Programming Environment" by Kernighan and Pike, the first five chapters (unless you know decent amount of C). If it comes to writing portable shell and also getting an introduction to Awk, the other two books are far better. No offenses to Stephen Kochan, I am a fan of his C book.. !
Nice Beginner or Reference Unix / Linux Book.......2007-01-24
I wish this was the book we used last quarter since it is MUCH better. It is this quarter's UNIX / Linux textbook (Shell Scripting although it also covers the basic commands) This book is highly reccomended for the Linux beginner or for someone who wants a very good reference book.
Okay, but not for heavy-duty UNIX-LINUX users........2006-11-17
Okay, but not for heavy-duty UNIX-LINUX users. This book is okay as an intro to the use of the shell. Korn shell users might want to consider "Korn Shell: Programs for Your Survival at Work" by Larry L. Smith. Bash users might want to consider "Bash Shell: Programs for Your Survival at Work."
Excellent book.......2006-02-09
It's a great book, even if you have some unix background, it will teach you why things happen the way it happens. I've been using *x operating systems for about 5 years now, and after read this book I've cleared lot of things.
It's really worth the money.
