Book Description
The 1920s is a neglected period in British film history, yet this is a fascinating period in the cinema when, confronted with audiences' preference for the American cinema of Griffith and deMille, the British cinema-going public was being encouraged to "buy British." In this rigorous, illuminating exploration of the cultural construction of "Britishness" by the British film industry, Kenton Bamford investigates the image of nation and of British men and women that films projected, the class attitudes and values that underpinned those images, and the realities of the reception of British and American films across classes. Using an exciting array of original source materials, he looks at the culture of the stage and popular fiction on which the cinema fed and demonstrates the stultifying aura of middle-class gentility that stifled creativity, innovation and democracy in British films. He also uncovers some unsung heroes of British cinema, including British star Betty Balfour and director George Pearson.

Projecting the Past: Ancient Rome, Cinema and History (The New Ancient World)
ASIN: 1405131810 |
Book Description
Stanley Kubrick 's epic film Spartacus has enjoyed iconic status in cinema history and strongly influenced modern perspectives on ancient Rome. This book examines the film from different historical, political, and cinematic perspectives. The chief ancient sources on the slave revolt led by Spartacus are included in translation. Contributors explore the film 's representation of history, the political climate at the time of its making, the history of its production, censorship, and restoration, its place in film history, and its enduring appeal. For the first time, the book offers suggestions for a new version of the film that comes even closer to the filmmakers ' original intent than the restoration currently available.

Book Description
This is a major new study of British Cinemaís formative years. Between 1918-1928 British film was poised between a Victorian past and a future marked out as American. Examining a cinema inextricably intertwined with notions of theatricality, pictorialism and literariness, in which the high cultural, middlebrow and popular intersect, this book re-evaluates the little known but interesting and often startling films of the 1920s.
Films such as the Blackpool melodrama Hindle Wakes, Guy Newellís Hardeyesque meditation Fox Farm, Graham Cuttsís exuberant adaptation The Rat (starring Ivor Novello as a Parisian apache!) Maurice Elveyís Comradeship, a haunting evocation of lives changed utterly after the First World War and Alfred Hitchcockís early works are all considered afresh within British cultural traditions and are related to a specifically British mode of perception distinct from the norms of European art or popular American cinema.
By challenging limited conceptions of British cinema the book shows how the oppositions of underplayed performances and theatricalised spaces; of private passion and public restraint, of pictorial composition and social document, made for a cinema both distinctive and conventional.
Through its recourse to adaptation and quotation and the exchange across media and social classes of different forms and representations, this cinema is revealed to be one that also had much to say about class, about the changing role of women and about a society in transition which had its own aesthetic practices with which to present its very varied set of stories.
Based on years of archival research Christine Gledhillís revisionist study extends our knowledge of this little known period of British film making. Through its re-evaluation of its relations to theatre, visual culture and literary tradition, this book will alter our sense of the origins and trajectory of British film in the twentieth century.
Book Description
Garbo and Gilbert: they made magic on the silver screen, and off—and this is the story of their ill-fated romance. When John Gilbert, the hot Hollywood star of the silent era, first met Greta Garbo, the icy young Swede, she snubbed him. Not long after, Louis B. Mayer, head of M.G.M., forced them to work together: he felt that the exquisitely beautiful young starlet could only benefit by playing alongside the more experienced Gilbert. There, on set, in front of everyone, they fell madly in love. What followed was as turbulent, dramatic, and public as any Hollywood melodrama.
Book Description
The daring raid on the great dams of western Germany by Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron in May 1943 is probably one of the best known and most widely told stories of the Second World War. In 1955 the raid was immortalized on film by director Michael Anderson in The Dam Busters, starring Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd. It became Britain's top grossing film of 1955 and in the half-century that has followed, thanks to its almost annual airing on the small screen, it has become a film classic. It is also a firm favorite with aviation enthusiasts due in no small measure to the breathtaking flying sequences featuring the Avro Lancaster. Tucked away in the Pinewood Studios archives are hundreds of rarely seen 'still' photographs from the making of the film. Including everything from storyboarding to location shots, and from the stars and personalities to the aircraft themselves, it is estimated that only about 10 per cent of these high quality pictures have ever been published before. In this book they are supplemented by stunning and previously unpublished air-to-air photographs, taken by the aircrews who flew the Lancasters on camera. Drawing on eyewitness accounts and interviews with film unit and flying personnel, Filming the Dam Busters evokes the optimistic outlook of the new postwar Elizabethan Age, when British cinema had a force and reach not equalled before or since.
Customer Reviews:
Nigel Wilkinson.......2007-08-07
This is an excellent addition to the film which is rated as one of the best of the Second World War.
Falconer does it again............2005-10-23
Jonathan Falconer has written a very accessible and informative account of the making of one of the best war films ever produced, the story of the innovative and daring WWII mission by the RAF's famed 617 squadron destruction of the Mohne' and Eder dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley in May 1943. For Falconer, this book is a labor of love and follows on his excellent and well illustrated book "The Dam Busters" about the raid itself. With that love comes a committment to detail and thoroughness about the filming of the 1955 movie..finding the by then scarce four Lancaster bombers to use in the film, their modifications including painting different idenifications on both sides to allow the filmakers to create the illusion of more than four planes, lead actor Richard Todd who played Wing Commander Guy Gibson's insistance on wearing the same hard to find Luftwaffe flotation device the real Gibson wore and prized, how the filmakers improvised to show a bouncing bomb which when the film was made was still a secret. The book includes descriptions of filming the flying sequences including some harrowing low level formation scenes over water, and interviews with the pilots who flew those scenes. There is also a description of the post production work in the days before digital special effects including construction of giant models of the dams and their environs. The resulting production was not only a very popular film in it's day but also a well researched, accurate description of the real story itself. The film lives on as a recently released DVD. Anyone who has seen the film will find this book informative, well illustrated, and a worthy addition to ones library on WWII aviation, movie making, or the Dams raid itself.

Book Description
Published to commemorate the centenary of Erich Maria Remarque's birth, this book tells for the first time the full story of the Academy Award winning film of Remarque's extraordinary novel. When published in 1928, All Quiet on the Western Front transformed the popular image of war; the film, directed by Lewis Milestone, was released hot on its heels the following year and was instantly acclaimed a classic. It remains the quintessential view of World War One, and of the brutality and waste of war. Like the novel, however, it suffered censorship internationally: it was banned in Italy, and in Germany following violent protests, and cut elsewhere, Hollywood included.
This fascinating account covers the film's origins, production and fortunes on and after its release. Andrew Kelly's five years' research has included visits to archives around the world, viewings of all extant versions of the film and interviews with those involved in its production. The book is illustrated with scenes from All Quiet on the Western Front and uses extensive extracts from the screenplays. It will be the definitive history of this great film and is a fitting tribute to Erich Maria Remarque.

Book Description
The Taj Mahal has long been a subject for photography and poetry, but this book presents the first sociological analysis of the Taj as a cultural phenomenon. Tim Edensor examines the conflicting narratives which surround the site: postcolonial views of the monument as a symbol of love, of India and of splendid exuberance; and those which challenge this ethnocentricity, for whom the Taj is the symbolic center of Islamic power or a site of Moghul appropriation. He discusses many of the tourist practices around the Taj and considers the notion of tourism in a wider context. Clearly written and fascinatingly illustrated, this book describes tourism as "performance" and the tourist site as a "stage" on which tourists are directed and rehearsed, improvising cultural conventions in the complex production of leisure space.

Customer Reviews:
Great Flash Reference book and prep for certification.......2007-01-31
I am the manager of the Seattle Flash User Group and I have also passed two Flash certification exams, so I know flash well and have used the program for several years. This book is an excellent book. When someone comes to the User Group and they are new to Flash or want to just learn the program I recommend three books, Lynda.com's Professional Flash 8: Hands On Training, to start learning the program, that will get your started learning the 20% of the program that you will use 80% of the time, the other two books are the Flash Cookbook and this book Flash on Demand.
I have read the book cover to cover; it is highlighted and has several post-it tabs attached to it. It is the first book I grab when I want to do a quick look up. It does a good job explaining and is full of photos.
It is a great reference and study guide for the exam that is why I read it cover to cover. The certification test cover a lot of area and you need a guide to review and study that covers the whole spectrum. One book will not do it, you need a couple and this one is good for that. They give a lot of suggestions on where to study and making mental notes on the test and they are very accurate.
Also I should add I do not know the people or the company that wrote this book. I am giving them a good review because I like this book and if my review helps someone to learn flash better I did my part. It is a great program. When I started to learn flash I bought a lot of bad books, if I can keep someone from being discourage again I done my part for the flash community.
I like this title.......2006-04-03
This is one of those sleeper books that gives you information on Flash, and in a way that doesn't talk down to you, and doesn't skimp on the cool stuff.
Cool title. I really like these On Demand titles.
great title.......2006-04-03
This is a great book for those who are wanting to get into Flash. Andy really knows how to talk to us who are starting in the appliction, and those who know how to use Flash. it's a great title for working with Flash.
Not a good book.......2006-03-31
While I liked how it looked at each element and described each component's basic functions, I found a lot of its content to be arguable and VERY poorly edited. In fact, it was so poorly edited, I really had a hard time taking any of it as accurate. The best example in my quick perusal was for "Understanding Basic Components" where it goes off on a wild and very badly written tangent about accessibility (very important and should probably have a whole chapter, but definitely not a "component"):
"When you work with Flash components, you can create Flash content that is accessible to users with disabilities using Flash accessibly features. As you design Flash applications, consider how your users will interact with the content[...] For more information on creating assessable compliant documents, open your browser and visit [URL], or for information on Flash, open your browser and visit [URL], go to the Flash Exchange..."
Do not spend 35 dollars on this book. If you can get it for really cheap, or free, then maybe. But don't take the content as being golden. A lot of it is questionable and a lot of the screenshots are unnecessary. And if you do have this book, get another one to verify its accuracy.
Good reference manual.......2006-03-22
This is a good reference manual for all the basic functions of Flash 8. It demonstrates clearly what all the menu options, tools, etc., do; where they're located; and how to work them. As others have noted, it's aimed at beginners. The first couple chapters will be old news for experienced users, and it covers only the most basic concepts for Action Script. It's a good overall introduction, although the text suffers from poor editing and occasional typos. These generally don't affect the content, but they are distracting.
If you're looking for a hands-on approach to learning Flash, this isn't it. You can download demonstration files at Perspection's web site, but they're always the finished product, so you don't get much chance to work out the process yourself. The book has a couple of projects in the back, but they're brief and more like extra features than tutorials. If you want something with a "learn by doing" focus, consider one of Philip Kerman's Flash books.
