5 out of 5 stars Tarzan.......2002-09-16

The Edgar Rice Burroughs books are full of suspense, a perfect bedtime story. The best thing is that many (if not all of them) can be downloaded from from Project Gutenberg. Try reading the first one, Tarzan of the Apes, to your child as a serial bedtime story. They'll be begging to go to bed.

5 out of 5 stars Disney's Tarzan , clear and Precise.......2000-02-07

This version of Disney's Tarzan is clearly written and has accurate drawings true to the film's content. Rarely do you find a smaler version of the big books so well presented.

4 out of 5 stars Smaller successor to the Disney Classic series.......1999-08-04

Disney Mouseworks seems to be moving to smaller books and it looks like the end of the line of the Disney Classics series. The new Read-Aloud Storybooks are shorter (by about 20 pages) and smaller (by an inch here and there). That's too bad for those of us who have been collecting the old series. The paper is nicer and the artwork is very good, though, so it's not a total loss.

2 out of 5 stars at least they didn't make him sing!.......1999-07-20

anyone who wants to read about tarzan should read thje books of edgar rice burroughs, not waste their time with this watered down shadow of the lord of the jungle. mr burroughs must be spinning in his grave like a top.

5 out of 5 stars edgar rice burroughs must be rolling over in his grave!.......1999-06-25

edgar rice burroughs created a hero to equal ulysses, hercules, or paul bunyan. walt disney studios reduced this giant to the size of mickey mouse. after you see the movie, read the REAL story in burroughs' TARZAN OF THE APES, thankfully still in print, and see how it really happened.

5 out of 5 stars THREE CHEERS FOR A WINNER !!!.......2005-03-17

This book is a pleasure to read from cover-to-cover. The author clearly loves her subject matter and infuses the history of cheerleading with fun and good humor. I especially loved the photographs. The book would make a great TV documentary. Since reading "Cheerleader", I have ordered all of Ms. Stein's other books.

From matching sweaters and pompons to coke and candy posters and ads, the allure of cheerleads in culture and advertising has long been evident in American culture, and here is captured by Elissa Stein in her visual celebration Cheerleader: Ready? Okay! From a history of cheerleading to cheerleader fashion, Cheerleader: Ready? Okay! captures the energy, excitement and changes of the best.

            Book Description

Eminently suited to classroom use as well as individual study, Roger Myerson's introductory text provides a clear and thorough examination of the models, solution concepts, results, and methodological principles of noncooperative and cooperative game theory. Myerson introduces, clarifies, and synthesizes the extraordinary advances made in the subject over the past fifteen years, presents an overview of decision theory, and comprehensively reviews the development of the fundamental models: games in extensive form and strategic form, and Bayesian games with incomplete information.

Game Theory will be useful for students at the graduate level in economics, political science, operations research, and applied mathematics. Everyone who uses game theory in research will find this book essential.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-03-24

This book is a masterpiece: it goes from the simple and straightforward (with examples of sequential equilibria) to technical and challenging material (such as the Mertens-Zamir type space). I own Fudenberg-Tirole and Osborne-Rubinstein, but it is Myerson that gets picked up the most. What I find most rewarding is that Myerson introduces everything gently, working from examples to build a general theory.

            4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2003-06-07

very comprehensive book. Covers pretty much everything. It's supposed to be a graduate text but undergrads can handle it as long as they know some math and aren't too scared by all the notation. Oh and Myerson is nice guy too.

5 out of 5 stars still on the frontier because of disinformation.......2003-02-09

This book is not good only because it explains all well known difficult concepts which noone so far has been able to explain clearly and rigourosly in one book but for new important topics that are less known for the majority of game theorists. I'm refering to the idea of networks and cooperation structures and also cooperation under uncertainty with the idea of virtual utility.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant and Deep Treatment.......2000-06-13

I just completed a game theory book (Game Theory Evolving, Princeton University Press, 2000). To find the best way to present various materials, I went through virtually every game theory book in existence. For the presentation of the basic material on normal and extensive form games, nothing even came close to this book in clarity of presentation and depth of understanding of the issues. Most textbooks, even highly touted ones that are mathematically challenging, do not even come close, and rarely even present the material in a coherent form at all.

I used to do a lot of carpentry, and I always knew the good carpenters from the run of the mill. The latter talk about how to build stuff. The good ones talked about how you choose, preserve, treat, and sharpen your tools. Myerson is, for game theory, like the good carpenter, and this book is more about the nature of the tools of game theory than their deployment--although it is certainly that, too.

The subtitle of this book is silly ("The Analysis of Conflict"). Game theory is the analysis of cooperation as much as conflict, and much, much else as well. So is this book.

5 out of 5 stars Game Theory : Analysis of Conflict.......2000-05-12

I found this book very helpful in my first year of the Ph D in Economics. I also have used MasColell and Kreps but Myerson was the only one that actually help me understanding complicated concepts as the always Hard Sequential Equilibrium. It is the only book that covers both, sequential and Perfect equilibrium with examples and solutions so that you understand what is going on. If you are willing to buy a Game Theory book I will definitely go for this one. If that is not enough you should also see that the cost benefit ratio of Myerson's book is undoubtly the best of any other one.

              Book Description

Changing Games, Changing Strategies provides a fresh look at the end of the Cold War and consequent changes in East-West security relations. The central question underlying the book is how a range of policies, previously thought to be unrealistic, became possible. Combining a post-Wittgensteinian approach to language, with insights from the critical theory of the Frankfurt School and Habermas, the book explores the relationship between meaning and practice in a detailed analysis of the contradictions of the late Cold War and post-Cold War world. The analysis demonstrates that developments over this twenty year period cannot be seen in isolation; Primakov’s acts cannot be understood without Gorbachev; Reagan or Gorbachev’s acts cannot be understood without the independent social movements or initiatives in both blocs; nor these movements without Helsinki. The study calls into question the conventional wisdom that the end of the Cold War was a case of "the West winning." Rather than a victory of one side over the other, the end of the Cold War represents a transition from conflict to dialogue and co-operation in a whole Europe, a conclusion which has consequences for the way we think about the future of East-West security relations against the background of NATO expansion.

Like most reference books from MS Press, this is the Swiss Army Knife for the professional developer and systems administrator. Everything is presented in a clear and concise manner which is easy to follow. There are many examples which can easily be adapted to your needs.

This book does a pretty good job of starting you out in Windows scripting. I purchased it because I am a Windows server administrator and it looked like it would help - and it did. It has to be said that the entire text of the book is on Microsoft's web site in the Technet Scriptcenter, but sometimes you want the paper in your hands as well. Another recommendation is Advanced VBScript for Microsoft Windows Administrators (also MS Press, ISBN 0735622442) if you are looking for some goodies for Windows admin like me.

1 out of 5 stars Arrogant behemoth achieves new level of smug conceit.......2006-06-20

Now I remember (again) why I hate Microsoft. First, they come up with a terminology all their own, then they pretend that's the standard. Like a "scripting host". Because Microsoft has a product (an add on to fix the shortcomings of DOS, as I see it) called "Windows Scripting Host", suddenly scripting hosts are standard teminology. I don't know about you, but to me a host is a machine on a network, usually a server of some kind. No, to Microsoft the Unix Boune shell is a scripting host!
The kicker is, even though they are promugating inferior products, simply by virtue of their marketing inertia, the products are sucessful and aided by all the third party software developers, consultants and writers/reviewers who bow at the altar of corporate myopia -- usually becaus eth products cannot stand on their own. But this book makes no attempt to give an overview of how everything fits together: VBScript, WSH, WMI, Active Directory, etc., etc.
This book is so inane, it doesn't even explain how to run the examples it is providing, until much later in the book (as another reviewer thankfully pointed out: chapter 3). This chapter, by the way, is written in the same style as the rest of the book: it sets up a straw man then argues against that. For example, in the first chapter the book makes the idiotic point that people hate scripts and think they are difficult. Who are they talking about? In chapter 3 they explain how difficult it is to use cmd.exe and how WSH is so much better. Who cares? Just explain what WSH does, period. My thinking is that the authors probably bashed cmd.exe but that was censored by corporate.
I only use Microsoft because I have to. But I am still hoping against all odds that Linux and Mac put them out of business. Read this book only if your have to. Everything is there, just mixed up and convoluted like the Windows OS itself.

I'm now up to Chaper 17 (of 18) and have read, highlighted and annotated my through the book. I've learned a tremendous amount, and have impressed my boss and coworkers with the great scripts I've been able tp put together with the aid of this book.
Pros: Great in depth coverage of of many topics.
Cons: It helps that I've had some minimal programming experience in college, but without ANY programming experience, this might not be the book to start with.

I'm moving on to Advanced VBScript for Microsoft Windows Administrators Next.

look... I am a MS consultant - and have been at it for 15 plus years.

This book is simply the only thing available for quick info any most any scripting topic.

If you want depth on any topic - google it.

If you are in need of a quick fix or immediate info on swicthes etc - this is the book.

                  Simple as that.

If you want to get indepth information there are books on specific topics - nothing like this though -

So ignore the lukewarm reviews - These are from poser admins or guys who think they are great vbscripters and want to put down a great resource.

BTW, I travel the country and find very few "good" vbscripters -

5 out of 5 stars An absolute gem for administrators, power users and learners.......2006-06-27

If you're an administrator, a power user or someone who wants to learn scripting by practical example, this compendium of truly useful scripts is a must-have addition to your library.

Torres provides a couple of hundred scripts using Windows Shell Scripting ssssss(bless you, bat file), AutoIt, KiXtart and Windows Script Host (using VBscript). He also provides a very basic introduction to scripting with each of these tools.

All of the scripts are immediately useful, though many of them are oriented toward network administration. If you don't have a network to play with, the scripts won't be of much practical help, but do serve as a valuable learning aid.

Torres doesn't just present the scripts bare as some other cookbooks do. He provides brief, but informative, explanations as to what the scripts do and how they do it.

As noted, a must-have addition to the libraries of administrators, power users and those who want to learn how to script.

I read Mr. Martinsson's other book, ActivePerl, and I really enjoy his writing style. I guess some people get it, and some don't. This book is especially strong if you are interested in WMI. While it touches on XML, it may be misleading to put XML first in the title. Nonetheless, it is an excellent treatment of scripting for SQL Server 2000 ...

Wanted to learn programming SQL Server 2000 with WMI. I'm a programmer, so the book's approach fits me. WMI text and samples worked for me. I learned WMI. I'm happy.

XML is not what I bought it for. I know MSXML, XSLT, XPath, yada yada yada. But I found some stuff I can use with ADO and MSXML. It's a bonus.

Another bonus: the code samples are available in Perl. Found them on the CD-ROM next to the VBScript samples. A pleasant surprise because the booktext shows example-code in VBScript.

I thought this book was one of the worst I have ever purchased. There are annoying mistakes in the sample queries, e.g., mispelled field names that will just drive you crazy. I can't speak for the WMI section, I bought this book for the SQL Server 2000 with XML info. I learned more at MSDN.
