      Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Good collection of classic short games.......2005-10-11

Chess miniatures does not refer to the pieces that are being played, nor to the minds that are playing. A chess miniature is a short game, generally 25 moves/countermoves or less. These are not the kinds of games that many grandmasters play, but they are very useful and instructive for those who wish to play chess both on an amateur and a professional level.

According to authors Leonard Barden and Wolfgang Heidenfeld, 'the development of modern chess is toward ever sharper and more aggressive lines of play, in contrast to the quiet scientific style preferred by the grandmasters of the thirties and early forties.' This book was written in the 1950s, and incorporates games from the 40's and 50's, as well as key games and strategies from earlier times that fit the criterion of being a miniature.

This book contains the full play of many games, delineated in move-by-move summary charts as well as commentary by the authors at critical junctures in the game. There are charts that show the distribution of pieces on the board, to help the reader visualise the games.

This book does assume some familiarity with chess, including some of the key games and conventions of commentary. For example, on game two (Hiedenfeld-Zietemann, Berlin 1929), the authors make the commentary 'Black avoids the torrential waters of the Max Lange Attack proper, which continues with P x P.' This one sentence shows the complexity and the humour in this text.

One thing I like about the commentaries in on games in this text is that there are alternatives presented. When there is a pivotal point in the game, the authors show how a different move might have resulted in a different game and outcome - of course, such is speculation to a certain extent, but following regular patterns of chess, these outcomes are interesting.

There are over 160 presented here, including an appendix of games played after the primary typeset of the book. Chess continues to develop, but like many enterprises, knowing the past and learning key ideas from the past can only strengthen the competitor in the future.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books on miniatures.......2005-06-26

(June 2005) This book is already ten years old ... and I have owned it for a very long time.

Read the other reviews here, they all say that this is a good book. McDonald was a very young writer when he wrote this, he spent a great deal of time on this volume, and it is apparent from the first time that you pick this book up.

Most authors just splash the game across the page with broad, vivid strokes, often they are content to let the moves speak for themselves. Not so for Mr. Neil McDonald, his love of chess is evident - he spends time telling you how the game was played, how the combination could have been improved - in short, he gives you most of the information and detail that other (more experienced?) authors could not be bothered with.

Why should you study miniatures? Well ... there are a lot of good answers to this question.
      # 1.) You quickly learn tactics.
      # 2.) You learn how to punish your opponent's mistakes, especially in the early part of a chess game.
      # 3.) If you study enough games of this type, it will definitely improve your overall feel for the game.
      # 4.) Just because it is fun!!!

I love this book, when I used to work nights at a local radio station, I studied this book for around an hour every single night. I really like McDonald's work ... he has written enough books now to show that he is a good author - and that he is here to stay.

I did not give this book five stars ... for reasons that have nothing to do with chess. ---> The diagrams are not 100%, the print is fading, and the pages are rapidly yellowing. ALSO - the binding has come apart on two of these books ... but I will readily admit that intense wear could have been the cause. (This is like my third or fourth copy of this book.) But I honestly do not think these are serious issues, many of you may not even notice these flaws.

I wholly endorse this book - the quality of the writing is well above the standard most authors normally set for a book of this type. McDonald - by turns - instructs, delights and amazes his readers. (Recommended.)

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun Book !.......2004-01-22

This is a really great effort. The format, diagrams, and games are all excellent.

This book could be used just for fun (i.e. playing over the games), or for instruction (i.e. especially in a scholastic setting).

I once attended a lecture given by Grandmaster Ashley on how to teach scholastic players (i.e. what was most important for rapid improvement). He said the focus should be 1) tactics 2 ) endgames and 3) play over minature games.

Playing over minature games can help you (or your students) develop a sort of "feel" for tactics sort of by osmosis.

anyway, give this book a try - you wou't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent instructive content.......2003-02-14

Face it, many of us lose games in under 25 moves or so. What makes this collection of modern miniatures compelling are a few factors: you get to see world class players make some obvious errors, which rebuilds our hope that even though we make many mistakes, we can still be competent; McDonald is an excellent writer; and, most importantly, there is a wealth of textual explanation and analysis of positions. For instance, he frequently somes up the results of the opening to show what it is about the position that leads subsequently to the quick win. This makes the book an excellent instructive manual on the opening and middlegame.

      4 out of 5 stars Pure Fun.......2000-06-19

Great little book in you enjoy playing over miniatures (games won in under 30 moves). Over 50 games by players such as Kasparov, Kamsky, Kramnik, etc. that are well annotated. Games are grouped by theme to illustrate attacking methods.

Microsoft Access remains an important part of the Windows developer's environment, in that the doughty database management system represents a simple and relatively straightforward core for forms-based software modules. Access 2003 Power Programming with VBA is a resource for programmers (particularly novice ones) working with Access and its native tongue, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The emphasis in these pages falls on getting specific tasks done (examples include modifying a stock menu bar, connecting to data sources, listening for interface events, and exporting XML). Other coverage is more basic, and appropriate for Access developers in their novitiate stage. It deals with such fundamentals as declaring variables, establishing control structures (such as loops and case statements), and using the features of the Visual Basic Editor.

Will this book help you? Probably, to some extent. It's well-written and the authors have made wise decisions about which aspects of the Access universe to include and which to leave out (Access is a big subject). Their explanatory sections are clear and easy to follow, and their code is clever enough. On the other hand, the odds are small that you'll get all the information you need out of this book, unless the application you want to write is super-simple. Take this book as one step in a potentially long journey toward the application you want, and in an even longer one toward VBA mastery. --David Wall

Topics covered: The most important tools and techniques to be used in writing applications based on Microsoft Access 2003. Software design and the differences among the many Access releases are covered at first, and a clever section on Access development without VBA explains database schema development and the use of standard forms. Most of the book deals with VBA, though, including its capacity to create graphical user interfaces, connect to databases, integrate with other applications, and work with XML data. A chapter on multi-user applications (which has mainly to do with database locking) is helpful.

2 out of 5 stars ADO templates don't work (Ch 15).......2005-07-20

This book is fairly decent, except that the template code for "Connecting to Databases with ADO" (Chapter 15) is riddled with errors. Most of this is probably due to problems with Access versions and configuration, but in any case, templates that don't work are frustrating and useless. There is absolutely no errata information for this book on the Wiley web site, and Wiley doesn't take inquiries, regardless of the notes in the front of the book. Find a different book for Client/Server study.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to VBA.......2004-10-06

Here is a solid introduction to programming in Access, including how to use some of the built-in features that make VBA easier to use. If you've been using Access to make forms and run quieries you should be able to pick up this book and start programming. Power Programming tells you how to create procedures and functions. The code isn't very useful by itself, but the book explains how things work so you should be able to write your own procedures.

You can learn how to customize menus using built-in dialog boxes or build them programmatically (pretty useful.) There is a long chapter on database connectivity and there is about twenty pages about XML support. There's also a couple of pages about Access backwards compatability (or lack of!)

There isn't a CD with the book and I keep trying to find a place in the book that gives a website with the code. It would be helpful to have the code available for cutting and pasting since it's so easy to make a typo.

If you are an expereienced VBA programmer, You probably want to find another book. I was looking for a book that would help me transition from Access 2000 to Access 2003. This book does not do that. I wish I had read the editiorial review more closely especially the part that says "a resource for programmers (particularly novice ones)" Another good quote from the editorial review is "the odds are small that you'll get all the information you need out of this book, unless the application you want to write is super-simple." But then you can never get everyting out of one book anyway.

This is the best book I have found for VBA programming I have found. It provided answers to a lot of my questions that I couldn't find in other books.
