What are the most appropriate theories and methods for analyzing contemporary America cinema? This book answers this question by taking an innovative approach to writing about individual movies: in each of the main chapters the authors examine the assumptions behind one traditional theory of film (e.g. auteurism, narratology, psychoanalysis), distil a method of analysis from it, and then analyze a contemporary American movie. They then go beyond the traditional theory by analyzing the same movie using a more current theory and method (e.g. new media theory, deconstruction, cognitivism).

Against the background of rising temperatures and shorter tempers among film theorists, 'Studying Contemporary American Film' sets out to pour oil on troubled waters. Between classical models of film interpretation and analysis (auteurist, structuralist, psychosemiotic) and the current plethora of contending paradigms (cognitivist, Deleuzian,
post-feminists, deconstructivist and hypertextual) it treads a
delicate, but determined path. The authors accept that film analysis is a matter of being wise after the fact, and being aware of open or hidden agendas. In order to be clear and consistent, you don't have to be dogmatic; being able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of certain critical positions doesn't mean that 'everything goes'. Although centered on close analysis of nine mainstream movies, this is not just another collection of essays on the authors' favorite films. The distinction classical and post-classical narrative, the Hollywood/Europe divide, the co-existence of linear narrative and videogame logic, and the differences between ontological realism and digital realism are all lucidly laid out and practically demonstrated. Highlights - to this reader at least - are the chapters on Die Hard, Lost Highway, The Fifth Element and Silence of the Lambs. The general movie buff may think the bullet points and numbered sub-headings rather too prescriptive; however, the authors tone is for the most part refreshingly dead-pan and descriptive, and students may be grateful for the many useful hints of how to ask the right questions and structure their papers accordingly. This is a guide in the best tradition of 'Teach Yourself Film Studies', of which 'Studying Contemporary American Film' could be seen as a welcome sequel.

Why I recommend this to film students.......2001-10-25
As a Film Studies lecturer, for years I have been unable to find a really solid, readable, all-round affordable textbook for my 16-19 year olds students. Bordwell & Thompson's Film Art is a bona fide classic, but it costs an arm and a leg. Pam Cook's The Cinema Book, likewise, on both counts. The rest (and there has of course been a vast amount published about film) is nearly always specialised, to a greater or lesser extent, tending to focus on certain directors, certain stars, certain genres, the film output of certain countries, and so on. This book, on the other hand, written by three British academics, covers the waterfront. It doesn't attempt to be comprehensive (that's where you need Pam Cook), but aims to include all the essentials in an intelligent and straightforward way. Hence you get chapters on the industry ancient and modern, basic film form and technology, critical approaches, and various film movements and national cinemas. Not a huge number of illustrations, but those included are right on the button. There's an extensive glossary, and a good list of current websites featuring film material.

From the author: Water-filled, drop impact tests on full-scale, blow-molding polyester bottles showed that impact properties change significantly after 30 days of aging at 50 [degrees] C. To quantify this deleterious effect of aging, we did small-scale laboratory experiments using the essential work of fracture method (EWFM). We measured the essential work of fracture of thin specimens cut from the sides of blow-molded bottles and aged under various conditions. Similar to the impact results, significant drops in essential work occurred after relatively short amounts of aging. Additional experiments confirmed that the decreases in essential work were due to physical aging and not to chemical degradation. A comparison of the essential work results to the full-scale, bottle-drop impact tests showed some inconsistencies that need to be resolved before EWFM can be recommended as a quantitative method for studying physical aging of blow-molding polyester resins.

If trying to learn useful information about cocaine and addiction this book is not a good use of time. I'd recoomend another title as most of this book spends its pages in benign information and ends with observations more political and social than informative.

This book is nothing more than a handful of code examples that you can just as easily get from the web. There's nothing in the way of overall architecture, insightful approaches to using Twisted in an application setting, etc. Save your money and read the web pages. Worst O'Reilly book ever.
Disappointing.......2006-07-20
This book was disappointing to me. It does not cover Twisted fundamentals very well or comprehensively, but is rather a collection of few large code-examples and verbose commentary. For an introductory (or 'essentials' as the title state) material to Twisted, you are better off with the online manuals.
Granted, there are a few "oh - that's clever" moments in the book, but those are buried in the examples and hard to look up for future reference.
The bulk of the book shows examples for web clients and servers (simple stuff, not useful since easier-to-use and more powerful tools/libraries exist) and low-level pop, smtp, imap and nntp servers and clients (probably not very common in today's applications).
I haven't used Twisted extensively in a real project, but I have read the online docs and fiddled with small scripts - and the "new" things beyond them that I discovered reading this book can be counted on the fingers of one hand (namely Perspective Broker, authentication and SSH stuff).
I would have liked this book to be a more comprehensive overview of twisted's fundamentals and the base-protocols it provides - with more examples of custom protocols - since that's probably what most people turn to Twisted for.

Are you a developer who wants to start building applications using twisted? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Abe Fettig, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that contains lots of examples of working code, with thorough notes and explanations of how you can use Twisted to do useful things.
Fettig, begins by covering downloading and installing Twisted, and some additional libraries, on the operating system of your choice. Then, the author shows you how you can use Twisted to make TCP connections to servers, and how to write a server that accepts TCP connections from clients. He continues by showing you how to use Twisted to work with the Web. Next, the author shows you how you can design a Twisted web application for programmatic accessing using the REST architectural style. Then he discusses the Twisted authentication framework, which provides an extremely flexible approach to authenticating users against different backends. He also demonstrates Twisted's powerful support for mail clients and servers. Then, he discusses Usenet clients and servers using the NNTP protocol. The author continues by covering Twisted's support for SSH. Finally, the author shows you how to use the tools Twisted provides for running and managing applications, which give you the ability to run daemon processes, use setuid and chroot to limit permissions, and write log files.
The goal of this most excellent book is to focus on practical examples of how to use Twisted to perform some of the most common tasks that face developers building network applications. Valuable to guide study of Twisted.......2006-02-08
As the previous reviewers stated, there are errors and not deep explaination. The value of the books is in the examples and as an outline to a course of study.
Without Dive into Python by Mark Pilgram I would not have a chance with the Twisted book. Dive into Python is probably the second Python book for most people.
The asynchronous program technique of "Deferred"s explaination in the book and on the web site did help a little but left me unsure about details. Fortunately, the twisted source code is understandable. Essentially, a list of nested tuples is being managed. There are some pretty compact code, such as, for deferred chain, etc. so this route will require some confidence with Python.
My ubuntu Linux system has great Python support (this is not generally known - my discovery was by accident). Unbuntu 5.10 comes with Python 2.4.2 already installed. All the Pthon libraries needed for this book are ready for easy installation with the Synaptic package manager.
SPE (Stanni's Python Editor) is available on Ubuntu. It works out well for browsing the Twisted source code. The Python code is syntax colored, the classes and methods show up in the side bar for easy navigation, and there is a recusive find in files to track down references. It did do stange things once and a while -I will stick to VIM for editing my own programs.
Fedora, Mac OS X, and Windows probably require a little more work.
It seems to me the real Pythonistas go to the source and fussy documenation is for wimps. However, relative newbies like me can sure appreciate all the help they can get. This is a valuable book.
