Book Description
America's chief exports are war and entertainment; combined, they are the war films viewed all over the world. The film industry is a partner of the government; American film shapes the ways in which both Americans and others view war. The authors herein explore differing film perspectives across five decades.
The essays, written especially for this volume, explore topics such as frontier justice, Cold War fervor, government-sponsored terrorism, the "back-to-Nam" films, films as a venue for propaganda, and war's far-reaching effects on personal values, family relationships, and general civility. The movies used in these analyses vary from conventional battle epics like Bridge on the River Kwai and The Green Berets to motion pictures with a war motif either as part of the story (The Way We Were) or as a historical setting (The Graduate). Some of the films are satirical (Dr. Strangelove); some are propagandistic (The Alamo, Big Jim McLain). Other films include Black Hawk Down, True Lies, The Deer Hunter, Patriot Games and Let There Be Light.

dry and disappointing.......2003-10-13
This is largely disappointing, if only because the bulk of the writing is extremely dry and poorly constructed. As an English major I may be an elitist, but I expect professors to be able to write at least as well as I do. One notable exception to an otherwise bland collection is Suszanne McCorkle's "American Hero Meets Terrorist," an essay that tries hard to introduce relevance to a volume that's otherwise mired in the 1980s.
Book Description
Among the most accomplished color photographers of our time, Jeff Brouws presents over 80 resplendent photographs capturing the dreamy magic of the carnival midway. Gravity-defying amusement rides, brightly colored booths, the beseeching barkers Brouws' tableaux are accompanied by dozens of historical images from photographers such as Ben Shahn, Marion Post Wolcott, and Arthur Rothstein, and vivid text by cultural historian Bruce Caron. Inside the Live Reptile Tent is a journey to the heart of every special weekend and holiday adventure.
Customer Reviews:
A history of a declining American institution.......2005-01-26
Hiawatha, the city where I live, has an annual summer event called "Hog Wild Days." It has a midway with games and rides. We go to it every year and ride some of the rides and play a few of the games. Over the last few years, the size of the crowd has decreased and that trend is the point of the book. Only a few years ago, before cable TV, computers and video games, the summer entertainment options were limited. Therefore, the traveling carnival used to be a major event in a city, as much a part of the American tradition as the Fourth of July fireworks and apple pie. Now, a carnival is not the broad-spectrum event it once was, the majority of the carnival activities are for people under 25. In the past, carnivals had a wide spectrum of entertainment, up to and including nudity. My favorite was always the sideshow with the freaks; I still remember the five-legged calf and the bikini clad women standing outside the adults only tent.
This book is largely a photographic record of the traditional carnival midway, with color pictures of rides, games and the occasional sideshow. There is a small amount of text describing the role of the carnival, when it was most popular and how it is now in decline. In looking at the pictures, you can see that very little has really changed in decades. There is a picture of a girl on a merry-go-round and even though it was taken in 1940, it could have been taken yesterday. I have had a personal experience with most of the rides pictured in these pages, some of the memories were of the fear I had when I rode them, but most elicited feelings of nostalgia.
If you are interested in the role that carnivals have had in the history of the United States, then this is a book you should take a look at.
Step Right Up, Folks!.......2001-09-26
Carnival fans and amusement park historians alike will delight in the many beautiful images of a dying breed - the small travelling carnival and family owned amusement parks. Mr. Brouws takes us up close and behind the scenes, and the many nighttime photos of the midway's dazzling lights are worth the price of admission alone. Mr. Caron's colorful commentary is definitely not your usually tepid "guided tours" that so many other amusement industry books offer, with wild insights and historic tidbits that are sure to amuse. Many never before seen photos appear from other photographers personal archives, bringing a rich sense of tradition to the subject at hand.
The final chapter is dedicated to San Francisco's Playland. Mr. Brouws takes a look back at the Playland of his childhood, echoing sentiments from any of us who have spent their afternoons strolling along those tawdry but always fascinating midways of yesterday. We see the peeling paint, the crooked games with cheap prizes, the worn out rides and run-down fun house. But we also realize why these places captivated us, the simple, carefree fun these places held for us for just a few days each summer. The few photos he did take (with his first camera) before the park disappeared combine with his childhood tales to add the perfect epilogue to this colorful story.

Crocheting Teddy Bears.......2007-01-18
This was exactly what I was hoping for. Great crochet patterns for teddy bears, some look like crochet and others look like fantastic sewn ones. Complete instructions and a bonus was instructions for sewing clothes for the bears.
patterns call for obsolete material!.......2004-02-12
i really wanted to make the cute shaggy bear pictured on the front cover. when i got the pattern book, i found that i needed Unger's Gespa (fringe-like bulky yarn), two 3.5 ounce skeins. gauge 1 st = 1". Guess what? after searching the web for over two hours, i have decided that this type of yarn is no longer manufactured (this book was copyrighted 1984) and i can not find a substitute that will satisfy the gauge. The other bears just look like cheap crocheted toys. Nothing to write home about. Only one star because i can't give it zero stars, even though I can't even begin to make what i wanted to.
One bear makes this a great book!.......2000-07-17
I like several of the bears in this book but one really stands out. The design for the Shaggy Bear is fantastic. He is a 14 inch bear done in a loop stitch. In addition to looking great he is stitched using a size "P" crochet hook! Quick to make for a last minute Christmas gift or to make in bunches for your favorite charity. I also liked the Panda Bear. The Honey Bear, the Koala Bear, and the Polar Bear are crocheted using chenille yarns and are also very nice. There are also patterns for fabric clothing to put on the bears. The clown suit is really cute.

Photoshop CS2 Bible.......2007-10-01
Never received the book. When I went to "Where's My Stuff?" no orders were listed even though I did not receive my order. Could not find a phone number or any other way to contact Amazon about my order. I WILL NEVER USE AMAZON AGAIN!
Keep your copy of Photoshop CS2 Bible always near computer.......2007-07-31
Who said that one book can't contain all information about Photoshop CS2? That person just never had "Photoshop CS2 Bible" by Wiley Publishing.
This book is really amazing. But, please, don't die down when you see this book. Yes, it's big, yes it's thick, but it has everything, absolutely everything that you wanted, want or would love to know about Photoshop CS2.
Take a look at content and you will see everything that waits you ahead in this book. But, again, please, don't get heart attack and just remember - don't cry out before you heart. It contains a lot of information, but this book will really help you in any way that you can imagine.
I work with Photoshop from 4th version (and Photoshop CS2 is 9th) and even i discovered new things from this book. It's very hard to describe all interesting things that you will find in this book, but i will give it a shot. In couple of words you will get acquaintance with painting & brushes, filling & stroking, selections, masks, filters, corrective filters, masking, extractions and much, much, much more.
If you intend to get close with Photoshop, then my advice to you is to keep you copy of "Photoshop CS2 Bible" always near you computer. For a couple of weeks i was intensively worked in Photoshop and every time i needed to remember smth of find information quick - this book never let me down. And it will not let you down.
From this book you will take only the newest and most up-to-date information, that was very carefully organized is topic chapters, on pages you will also find very useful print screens and clear explanation of every subject.
Let's also face the fact that not all people who read that sort of a books are real English-speaking people, so people who are not native English will be also surprised how easy they can read and understand information in it. This book is wrote with very simple language and is apprehensible for absolutely everybody.
Also some very small but helpful pull-quotes are presented for your attention as cautions, notes, tip, cross-references and, of cause, new features. In last one explains an options, commands, that is new or have differences from previous version of program. This book also contains 32 pages of full-color examples that highlights the most important moments that you will use in your work.
I know that many Photoshop users are trying to avoid such features as brushes, because from first glance they seems very complicated, but just read Part II: Chapter 5 and you will see that there is nothing complicated. All you need is just a bit of practice and improvisation- because brushes can be used for much more than simply painting with brush tool and can be absolute godsend in your everyday image-editing tasks.
Remember, different pictures call for different solutions, so just take this amazing book (or buy it), take a deep breath and go ahead - you will be wondered how simple and easy it really is, just a bit a patience and you can do everything you want or dreamed about. Enjoy!
It depends on what you're looking for?.......2007-06-19
If your goal in buying this book is to learn about every tool, button and procedure in Photoshop, then this 1000+ page book will do a fine job of that for you. If on the other hand you are looking for a book that will get you engrossed and inspired by doing fun creative projects that are unique to Photoshop, then I wouldn't even consider this book.
Despite of what the authors say, I was really disappointed that they didn't include a CD or a download site of the illustrations and examples they used in the book. It would have made it much easier to follow along and try doing the things they were suggesting. One case in point, when they they described how to use the Red-Eye tool, I couldn't find a picture with red-eye in my collection, so I just had to take their word on how it worked and move on.
The Appendix of keyboard shortcuts is the most complete you'll probably see anywhere. One small point, if they were to put in bold print the key stroke commands throughout the book, it would make it much easier to follow and do them as you move through the book. It would also make it much easier to find again when you refer back to them at a later date.
In conclusion, I'm really glad I went through this book; it filled in a lot of the details that I had missed from the first three books I've studied on Photoshop and also up-dated me on a late version of the program. I'm sure it will serve as a good reference point for when I have technical questions in the future. That said, I'm really glad it wasn't my first book on Photoshop or I might have come to see the program as being a bit of a tedious endeavor because of it's almost total lack of real-time projects.
The ultimate resource for photoshop cs2.......2007-06-08
GET THIS BOOK! THERE IS NO BETTER BOOK THAT TELLS YOU NEARLY EVERYTHIHNG! GET OVER IT... NO BOOK TELLS EVERYTHING... BUT NO BOOK WILL TELL YOU MORE!
Easy To Find What You Need.......2007-05-31
I finally bought a digital camera a few years back. Then I finally used it on a recent vacation. I picked up photoshop to fix some photos as a practical joke on a friend (expensive purchase, yes, but we take our practical joking quite seriously). This book was very helpful and it's easy to find what you're looking for when you need it, a characteristic all too often absent from computer manuals. It is extremely frustrating spending twenty minutes looking for something that needs to be down commonly enough that you should be able to find it within a minute. This book enables you to do so.

Photoshop CS2 Bible - Professional Edition Book Review.......2006-07-21
Title: Photoshop CS2 Bible - Professional Edition
Author: Laurie Ulrich Fuller, Robert C. Fuller, and Deke McClelland
Publisher: Wiley Publishing, Inc. 2004
ISBN: 0-7645-4179-X
Pages: 649 pages
Reviewer: Bruce Frank
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Deke McClelland is quite possibly the most accessible and humorous Photoshop guru around, rivaled only by Scott Kelby and Russell Brown. In the introduction to this book, he asserts that he was born in Verona in 1511, and later, with diabolical intent, developed a pathogen code named the "Pernicious Instrument of eXtreme Evil" (you guessed it, "pixel" for short). Then, in the words of the introduction, "When his invention turned out to help rather than hurt photography, he went quite mad. He now inflicts his revenge by writing educational books and hosting training videos."
Although written with his characteristic wit, McClelland always returns to the point, very carefully and thoroughly explaining the precise steps needed to achieve various results in Photoshop, so that even a beginner will be able to follow along easily. Having said that, this book is true to its "Professional Edition" designation - it covers very advanced techniques. For example, one very interesting bit of information I picked up is that Layer Styles (automated effects provided in the Layer Styles palette) can be "deconstructed" - that is, by choosing Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers, you can take over and edit each layer of the effect to your satisfaction.
Attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of this book - in the chapter called "Painting and Brushes," McClelland even covers the hardware a Photoshop artist would probably use (the Wacom tablet), and elaborates on the techniques it can facilitate.
Well written and designed, and with color photos and screenshots throughout, this is a tome (649 pages!) that should serve as a useful reference for years to come. Although this is written to cover Photoshop CS, nearly all of the techniques covered would apply to Photoshop CS2 as well. Supplemental information can be found at dekemc.com.
Great photos and graphics, sage advice........2005-11-14
The features you need, the advice you want, the examples you'll refer to again and again: that's what you'll find in this book. The experience and insights that the authors bring to this book have made it one of my favorites among computer books in general and my total favorite among Photoshop books. I recommend this edition of the Bible to anyone who has already used most of the basic features and wants some expert advice to move them on to the next level. The "Professional" tag is appropriate, but you don't need to be an expert to use the book: that's where it takes you. Don't expect this book to baby you and for every single button and dialog box to be covered, because this is a book focused on the features you use for more advanced projects, and the work that pushes the edge of the design envelope. If you're looking for coverage of everything in the Photoshop menus and tools, get the main CS2 Bible, the one that's like 1500 pages. If you want to learn specific stuff to take your work to the next level, the Professional Edition is the one you want.
Very detailed..........2005-09-26
Good book giving the details on all the CS 2's new features. Two thumbs up!
Fantastic Book.......2005-08-29
If you want to take your pictures to the next level this is the book for you. Fantastic and easy to follow .. for the advanced amateur and pro.
Disappointed.......2005-08-13
The Professional Edition appears to be missing any information on at least 2 new Photoshop CS2 features; Smart Sharpening and Reduce Noise. It has sections on Sharpening and Noise BUT does not cover the new CS2 commands. I have not been through the whole book but this situation took me by surprise.

A pick any serious Photoshop library can't miss........2007-10-05
Stephen Romaniello's PHOTOSHOP CS3 CHANNELS AND MASKS BIBLE probes the heart of Photoshop's strength - and one of its potentially most confusing aspects. From using channels and masks for faster workflow and understanding how digital color is converted to working with single and multiple document selections and layering masks, this is a pick any serious Photoshop library can't miss.
A Comprehensive look at channels and masks........2007-08-18
When I first opend the book I was a bit dismayed as it seemed like a basic review of Photoshop information. This was true for about the first 145 pages or 30% of the book. Once I arrived at the channels and masks area, I found the book that I was looking for. The remaining 70% of the book, almost 350 pages, covered all aspects of channels and masks. There was significant information regarding power selections and the creation of masks, as well as clipping masks and the creation of selections in channels. Mastering channels and masks pushes the Photoshop user to the next level in terms of being a power user.
No images with the book - Waste of a book.......2007-08-08
The book does not come with the images used in the book. You cannot follow along and work on the images.
THIS BOOK is a COMPLETE WASTE of time without the images.
Who thought leaving out the images was a good idea?
Not Particularly Helpful.......2007-06-27
Channels and Masks are a mystery to me. I know more having read the book, but not that much. It was a disappointment. For starters, all key commands are given for Windows. Never mind that a large number of MAC people are creatives using Photoshop. Explanations are not clear. I'm told what to do, but not where to find the menu to do it. Although I have used Photoshop for a long time, this is an area that was unfamiliar to me since I didn't need it before. It's still something of a mystery. I feel I wasted my money. I'll try Scott Kelby's book.
LUCID AND ENLIGHTENING.......2007-06-09
Very helpful for understanding color channels, alpha channels and other masking techniques; comprehensive, accessible and clearly written. Especially good is the section on lab color and on mixing and offsetting channels-- there are techniques described that I haven't seen anywhere else. I find this book much more thorough than Scott Kelby's book on channels-- I am grateful for the overview of channels, color management and color adjustment in the first part of the book. Cool, full-color images thorughout--
