    Book Description

Part of a new introductory series, this book makes accessible and ordinary the ideas and procedures of film studies. Using a variety of critical thought about film texts, the author's approach is grounded in the experience of the student as a cinema-goer.
The book is organized around three accessible, non-specialist experiences of film: story, character, and spectacle. Through these, an introduction is offered to film- specific studies. Each chapter makes detailed references to two films. The choice of films is contemporary and diverse--from E.T. to A Chinese Ghost Story, from Once Were Warriors to Romeo and Juliet, from Sliding Doors to Secrets and Lies. The author uses close study of specific sequences in order to develop an introductory level understanding and appreciation of key elements of film form such as mise-en-scene and editing. Throughout, the emphasis is placed on how meaning is made in the interaction between film "text" and spectator. The close study of specific film text is also used as the basis for opening up broader issues and ideas in film studies.

The book demonstrates the deep connections between how we think about animals and how we think about ourselves and our cultures in different times and places. The collection brings together scholars from a wide variety of disciplines--including history, literary studies, anthropology, cultural studies, and art and art history--and marks a formative moment in the emerging field of "animal studies."

        Book Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on toys representing animals and non-human creatures in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying toys representing animals and non-human creatures to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of toys representing animals and non-human creatures vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports toys representing animals and non-human creatures. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for toys representing animals and non-human creatures in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for toys representing animals and non-human creatures for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported toys representing animals and non-human creatures. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on toys representing animals and non-human creatures in Germany face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying toys representing animals and non-human creatures to Germany? How important is Germany compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of toys representing animals and non-human creatures vary from one country of origin to another in Germany? On the supply side, Germany also exports toys representing animals and non-human creatures. Which countries receive the most exports from Germany? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for toys representing animals and non-human creatures in Germany. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for toys representing animals and non-human creatures for those countries serving Germany via exports, or supplying from Germany via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Germany fits into the world market for imported and exported toys representing animals and non-human creatures. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Germany in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Germany is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Germany compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

This is by far the best activity book I have ever seen/used. I work with children so I always have to come up or event new activities. This makes my life so much easier. It is well put together, fun (for adults and children alike). Thank you for this book. I have even started sharing it with all the mothers I know. I highly recommend this to any one who has children or work with children.

                        5 out of 5 stars Kid learning.......2006-11-03

First time mother with no kid experience. Was a helpful tool for me. Gave me ideas on games and activities that would not only be fun for my toddler but would help him developmentally. Really had some good ideas. Would definitely recommend it for mothers who need a little help keeping their child occupied.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching curiosity, self-control, kindness and other values.......2005-02-03

Parents who have infants through age eight will welcome an activities book which pairs activities and games which take 5-30 minutes each with a focus on teaching curiosity, self-control, kindness and other values. From a 'Scavenger Number Hunt' which involves common household items and can even be done in the grocery store. The 2,000 Best Games & Activities is an excellent collection of lessons on how to be a better person, couched as games.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for friends with kids / all parents.......2004-08-27

I gave this book as a gift to my older sister to use with my niece (age 9) and nephew (age 5). My sister replied that she absolutely loved the book; that there are so many creative, fun and thought-provoking activities and games in here to keep both her kids busy, entertained, and engaged. She was very impressed with the book overall, and for her to comment that her sometimes finicky kids are enjoying these activities says a lot. You'll be amazed at how many clever ideas are crammed into this little book. Many activities are so straightforward yet unique and thought inspiring; just great for working out those young minds when they need it most.

5 out of 5 stars Carry it in your back pocket!.......2004-05-20

This book is amazing! I knew within 20 minutes of using this book that I would do well to carry it in my back pocket. It is amazingly easy to locate just the right activity, set it up and watch the learning take place. It also helps me to use spur of the moment opportunities to the fullest. This should be given to parents before they leave the hospital with their new babies!

As the Web has evolved, so too have users' expectations of it--which means that today's Web developers are being forced to deal with issues that weren't even considerations not long ago. How do you develop a site that customizes itself to individual users? How can you design your site so that even nontechnical users will be able to contribute content? To answer these questions and more, you need this book. By examining your favorite Web authoring program--Dreamweaver MX 2004--in the context of databases and the technology solutions that have grown out of them, this book/CD combo will have you moving from static to dynamic sites in no time. You don't need programming experience to construct the fictional travel tour site that's the centerpiece of this volume. Just follow along with the 16 hands-on lessons (which include side-by-side ASP PHP, and ColdFusion code), and you'll be well on your way to the interactive, easy-to-maintain, and standards-compliant sites that represent the way of the future.

Excellent book to teach you fundamentals of working these three techologies into your web site. I would, however, recommend that you pick one and run through the whole course instead of trying to learn all three at one time.

A little more hand coding than I would prefer for this. I would like more emphasis on the panel features built into Dreamweaver. This is not a book for code warriors, it is good for people who want to make the transition from static web sites to dynamic content.

The more I got into the web site design that I bought this book to help with, the more useless this book became. If you want to build a toy web site, this book *may* help. If you want to build a professional looking web site, this book is useless.

I can't recommend this book highly enough! I'd worked with static sites for years and was learning to hosh-posh sites together with some dynamic content. Many pieces are coming together now in my head thanks to this book. It offers great examples and the 'why' behind what you're doing. I wish Jeffrey Bardzell wrote a book on Flash...

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the Topic.......2005-04-09

This book is excellent! We highly recommend it. Jeffery Bardzell handles the matter of building a dynamic website with exact step by step examples and builds the sample Newland Tours website. This book is identical to Macromedia's "Dreamweaver MX Dynamic Applications" training from the source, except that this book has PHP references in it as well. Therefore if you have that book, you don't need this one and visa versa.

                        2 out of 5 stars SAkers.......2005-03-29

Nice book for beginners. However, not a book for programmers. What little code view you can see is constantly cut off so you cannot see the complete code. A lot of guess work is involved. Also, the code that is spelled out within the text does not stand out so it tends to blend into the text a little too easily. On a positive note, this book does give you a good overview of the basics of dynamic web programming.

3 out of 5 stars Not that easy to use.......2007-08-05

Maybe I'm strange since most people seem to love this book, but I find it to be not that helpful. The author does seem to know what she's talking about, but I don't like the overall arrangement of the book. For one thing, instead of having a 1-2-3 list for how to do something like the Visual Quickstart guides have, this book has a rather wordy explanation for each procedure. To make matters worse, almost everything has tutorials mixed in with it, so if you just want to see how to do something, you have to also wade through all that tutorial information, which gets to be very frustrating. I can't much assess the tutorials, since I didn't try many of them, but perhaps the book would be simpler to follow with a 1-2-3 explanation of a procedure, then a tutorial about it AFTER that so you don't have to wade through both if you don't need to. Another carp is that the Contents page only gives a page number for the beginning of a chapter, and not for anything within the chapter, so you have to go to the beginning of a chapter and start flipping pages until you come to what you want. And is the Index comprehensive? For instance, I never could find anything on how to align more than one element simultaneously on a layered page, and had problems finding other things too. I finally just gave up on all this and ordered another book on Dreamweaver. Thus, I conclude that MACROMEDIA DREAMWEAVER MX 2004 by Page is OK and will eventually teach you Dreamweaver, but is certainly not very easy to use.

This is a pretty good tutorial on using Dreamweaver. The different chapters illuminate various ways of building and organizing your pages. After following the lessons, you can see which method will work for you depending on your desired results and the complexity of your site. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn how to use Dreamweaver.

5 out of 5 stars Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Review.......2007-01-02

This book was used as a textbook for an IVTech class. It was extremely helpful for an initial exposure to web page development. The chapters are based on the tutorial on the included CD. The bold items in the text allow you to skim through assignments quickly. There is also quite a bit of very helpful detail and background information included.
This book is very good to "handhold" a reader through a totally new topic, yet it also provides enough detail to show the reader how to develop quality web pages.
The one topic that was not covered was how to access a database, although this is covered in a tutorial in the Dreamweaver software.

I got this on a recommendation from a seminar. It is the best Dreamweaver source I have found.

Chapters are well organized and I am learning new techniques
                        with each lesson.

This book is okay if you are trying to learn something on your own and need step by step instructions. By no means is this a reference book for dreamweaver or xhtml.

I dont have anything bad to say about the book, but theres nothing unique or intuitive about it either.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginners book.......2005-10-08

Step-by-step, easy to follow instructios, with clear pictures and diagrams to indicate where to find the tools they want you to use. The projects in this book teach the basics in ways that users will be able to put to immediate use for their own projects. I found it especially useful since I have no training at all with any graphics programs, this book really helped me understand what tools were available and how to use them in effective ways.

I cannot stress enough, however, that this is a beginner's book. If you have experience with Fireworks (or probably any other similar program) this may not be the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A value for money purchase.......2005-09-30

This book starts from the very basics in a clear and well set out format making it one of the value for money books on my shelf.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference Book.......2005-09-23

I have been through this book and its companion book for Freehand MX and have the same comment for this one that I had for the Freehand MX version. Almost Great! Thorough enough to be used as a reference but the actual examples need some editing. There was a lack of consistency to simple things like "select both items" being sometimes written and sometimes left to the reader to figure out. Overall, a good book for a beginner who will refer to it often for a reference.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Tutorial (but not as good as the one for DREAMWEAVER).......2005-07-24

I was blown away by the "Training from the Source" tutorial for DREAMWEAVER. That is why I had to have this one for FIREWORKS. I have to admit to being a little disappointed but that is mostly do to the previous book setting the mark so high. This is still a great tutorial to learn the program, especially for someone like me who knows nothing about this subject. This book is designed as an intro, not an advanced course.

A few of the qualities that this series seem to share are clear instructions, easy to read print, illustrations and screen shots that are big enough to be useful and an approach that continues to build on what has been done before. This is especially true with the examples on the enclosed CD.

What disappoints me is that this book is primarily designed from the approach of using FIREWORKS as a stand alone program. There is material that covers the integration with DREAMWEAVER but this material is neither as copious nor as clear as I would have liked. Still, I know a lot more today than I did 2 days ago.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for beginners.......2005-07-23

This book is really great if your an absolute beginner. The instructions are easy and the tutorials with the CD make the book a great way to learn fast and easy. Maybe this is not the book you want if you really want to go into Fireworks more. I felt like I needed to know more stuff than the book taught me. There's a lot you can do with Fireworks, but the book doesn't take you all the way. It's a really great way to get from absolute beginner to advanced intermediate.

                        Book Description

Tired of watching your elegantly constructed Web sites dissolve into a jumble of disorganized pages, broken links, and badly written code as they're updated and added to over time? Then get this guide and regain control by learning to design and deploy Dreamweaver sites specifically for use with Macromedia's hot, new content-management tool Contribute. In the first Macromedia-authorized book to cover this natural pairing, veteran author Joseph Lowery shows you how to develop Dreamweaver Web sites that anyone can update and maintain via Contribute. Through a series of project-based tutorials, Joseph shows you how to take advantage of the programs' shared check-in/check-out and versioning systems, integrated administration, and myriad other complementary features to create sophisticated, unbreakable sites that are a breeze for content creators and administrators alike. You'll also find lessons on handling server-side includes, establishing CSS guidelines, working with external documents, creating and using templates, and more! A companion CD includes all the lesson files you'll need to complete the book's projects. ** Please note: The lessons in the book—and their accompanying files—build upon one another. The basic files are contained in Lesson 2 which, as instructed, are used to create the basic Dreamweaver site. Each subsequent lesson's files are copied on top of the site; the lesson files are stored in the appropriate folders to make copying a one-step operation.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2006-05-26

I was starting to wonder if I just had a mental block with Dreamweaver and Contribute. I've been working on the Web since 1994, but always edit source code (mostly PHP/XHTML/CSS). I wanted to investigate this as a management combination for a large Web site, but couldn't get past the first four pages of chapter three. Lo and behold, everyone else is having the same problem, so I don't feel so stupid. This book is impenetrable.

                        4 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-08-16

I agree with previous reviewers that this book is not perfect, but I don't think it is that bad and as far as its goal of helping users learn Contribute and integrate with Dreamweaver, this book meets its goal. I found it very helpful and would strongly recommend it for organizations using the Macromedia platform.

4 out of 5 stars very good tutorial book.......2005-01-22

I write and design instructor-led course books for Macromedia. As I was writing my course I found Joe's book an invaluable resource for self-paced tutorial work. The hands-on exercises enable you to perform work in a cumulative style that helps you get a real-world sense of development and maintenance using Contribute 3.

                        1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book.......2004-12-30

I agree with the two previous reviewers. Book is rife with incorrect instructions, lesson files are not correct either. Don't waste your time or money on this book. Got through chapter 3 and gave up. E-mailed the publisher and Macromedia about the poor quality of this book.

1 out of 5 stars New files needed for download.......2004-12-28

Agree completely with first reviewer. Useless until new files are available.
