The Secrets of Frank Herbert's Dune, complete with a DVD full of interviews, footage, and behind-the-scenes goodies, reveals the how, where, and why of the 6-hour SCI FI Channel miniseries. The series, much anticipated by fans of Herbert's novels (and foes of David Lynch's controversial 1984 take on the story), covers the action of the first book, Dune.
With lots of black-and-white photos showing shots from the miniseries as well as never-before-seen cast, crew, and set images, Secrets reveals much of the production process, including special effects. The accompanying text enlightens fans about some of the casting and plot decisions, bound to be the subject of debate for years to come. An inset includes color photos of major cast members, production sketches, models, and sets. One of the best chapters in the book is Vittorio Storaro's "Cinematography Ideation of the Film," which reveals his ideas behind camera methods and key shots. The book makes a nice, informative package for anyone interested in how a cable-TV science fiction epic is made, and the DVD is an added bonus. --Therese Littleton

"Dreamer of Dune" revealed.......2003-05-06
Author Brian Herbert lets you in to his family and the challenges they faced from extreme poverty, to moving over 20 times, to the heights of wordly success and fame. Brian shares the pain, separation and rebirth he went through with his father in an intimate, revealing way that helps the readers face the issues they have had with their own parents. He covers his family's life with such detail that it has the effect of helping the readers open up, retrieve and remember their own lost personal memories.
If you have read "Dune," you will love the evolution of this timeless multi-dimensional story that is outlined in "Dreamer of Dune." This is an honest story of a real man's life that exposes both his light and shadow in the midst of creative genius.
Books is kinda borring like the movie.......2002-11-23
Ok first off, I love the origanl Dune movie, I think it was great, in fact I am waiting for the supposed three hour version simaler to the Sci-fi channels version of the movie they played about 5 or 6 years ago.
The made for Tv version of the movie was awful. The acting was OK. But did you see the Cheesey back drops. I didnt beilve for one second that they were in a deserst. Yes it was more true to the book than Lynches version, but Lynch seemed to get the Harkkonnes on the nose, and in the TV version they seem, almost nice and tame in comparison.
The DVD is pretty cool, but it showes even more how low budget and cheesy the tv version of the moive is
........2002-11-15
the books were classic. the 1st movie was horrible. the 2nd a little better, just too much like a play and not a movie, the book on the movie was a major stretch. if you like the movies/game,read the books, all 10 plublished, then youll see how much of a joke it was to put the story into this format.
Great miniseries, good read.......2002-05-11
A bit more in-depth discussion of the effects (and more importantly, some of the unconventional backlot techniques used to achieve them) would have been greatly appreciated. After watching the series I was personally impressed at the depth they were able to establish with such a (reportedly) small budget.
As stands, this book gives a great overview of the process and challenges that went into creating the excellent cable miniseries 'Frank Herbert's Dune', and I highly recommend giving it a read!
Anything related to Dune I give 5 stars =].......2001-06-02
Dune was always a great movie a great series of games which keep growing and I am happy about it and I can say books are probably good too. Long live Dune and the fight for spice, I always thought it was just a game a while ago till I learned that movie was released before the game was even made. I learned that the game was based on the movie and I think it was all a really good idea!

It's a new world-you've got to keep up! Richard Andreoli, Dave Ciminelli, Darren Frei, Smith Galtney, Aaron Krach, Drew Limsky, Christopher Lisotta, Parker Ray, and Dave White are eight writers whose combined work has encompassed a wide spectrum of cultural reportage: The New York Times, The Advocate, Instinct, Out, Cybersocket, Cargo, Time Out NY, Unzipped, Frontiers, and LA Weekly. Together they chart the new generation of popular icons and ideas in this wildly funny, irreverent book, which is a combination of essays, best-of lists, how-to advice, and recipes (yes, recipes) designed as a guided tour of the landscape of contemporary queer culture.
Richard Andreoli's writing has appeared in The Advocate, Instinct, Frontiers, and numerous other publications. He lives in Los Angeles.

MONDO HOMO INFORMATIVE & ENJOYABLE READ.......2007-01-11
MONDO HOMO features many informative and entertaining articles, covering many facets of day to day living as a gay man. As it is an anthology, you can pick up and lay down at will, great for casual reading. It would be especially of interest to newly "out", closeted or gay-curious men. It might help them avoid some pitfalls and point them in a right or comfortable direction. Straight women should also find it very informative. The only downside is that it is now three years old. This is a fast changing world, so maybe an update or a Volume 2 is in order.
Good fun.......2005-12-12
A very of-the-moment book on contemporary gay culture that encompasses a broad range of trends and fads. Tongue in cheek (like the cover model, literally) but also serious minded enough. Perhaps the only flaw of the book is the editor Richard Andreoli using this book to constantly remind us how hot he is. (He tries a gig as a go-go boy, with pictures, he talks about being admired by a group of men as he tries on a sexy swimsuit, he lets us know that Jennifer Garner complimented him on his bicep.) Richard, you are very handsome and look great but your constant need for affirmation shows that apparently the self-esteem has yet to catch up with him, and inadvertently showcases the less savory side of the gay world's oobsession with looks. Other than that, the book is lightweight, but good, fun.
A Fag Hag's Dream Read!.......2004-12-15
I LOVE THIS BOOK! Andreoli's pop culture references from porn stars to (sit down) Marie Osmond t-shirts make for a fun and clever read. My favorite are all of the TV Generation memories the author writes about in eery detail; it's as though he took a trip back in time and channeled this book.
It will be the stocking stuffer for all of my gay male friends this Christmas!!
A Must Have !!!.......2004-12-14
Such an amazing read!! I could not put it down. A book that quotes both Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon) and Sylvia Fowler (Rosalind Russell) before the first chapter is definitely worth having on your shelf. Not to mention reminding us all of the contributions Jim J. Bullard has given to the world. Read it!

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing. .......2007-05-20
If you like puzzles, this would be a fun book if it weren't for one very big problem. However, it is plagued with editing mistakes that quite simply should have been caught prior to publication. Don't waste your money on this book, instead choose a puzzle collection that has been checked for mistakes, as this one should have been.

Everything but crosswords.......2005-04-18
For those puzzle solvers who enjoy the Dell Pencil Puzzles magazine, this collection is for you. Although it does not state that these puzzles are collected from past issues of the Dell magazine, they are the same types of word puzzles with exactly the same names (Kriss Kross, Figgerits, Cryptoquizzes, Bowl-A-Score Challenger, Spellathon, etc.) that Dell puzzle solvers are familiar with.
This collection includes plenty of good-quality medium difficulty puzzles. One reason I gave this book only three stars is because it has no table of contents, so if you enjoy one particular type of puzzle over the others and want to tackle those first, you have to thumb through the entire book to find them. Another reason is that it is hard to justify the price when you can buy an almost identical collection as a Dell Vacation Special issue for half the price. So unless you simply can't get enough of these puzzles, or unless you want a more durable cover than the usual thin one that graces a magazine, I'd buy the magazine instead.

Awkward and Annoying Format.......2004-02-03
The search words appear on the left-hand page and the coordinating puzzle on the right-hand page. From a lounging position it's necessary to bend the left-hand pages around the back of the book, which is difficult because this book is very thick. And then you need to keep flipping the book back and forth from the search word page to the puzzle page. This book is best used sitting at a desk. Not a relaxing or enjoyable puzzle experience.

EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2000-09-27
I just bought this book, I wanted something different than crossords and fill-in-the-blank. It's the best collection I've found yet. B Dalton Booksellers need to stock a better varieties of these kinds of books.
STOCK UP ON PENCILS!.......2000-08-04
Lots of challenging word-search puzzles for word-search fans. The only things that kept me from giving it five stars is that it has too many of the "Tail Tag," "Loose Letter," and "Tangleword" puzzles, which I'm not all that fond of, but I do like the cube-shaped diagrams. Also, the large format of the book makes it somewhat unwieldy. All in all, though, a winner!

one more of those.......2001-11-19
one more of those books we read, enjoy and forget what the heck the message was upon reading the last page.
Save your money and buy something else.
Incorrectly categorized.......2000-05-09
This book could have more appropriately been categorized as a negotiation strategy or conflict management book. Most examples in this book focus on negotiating a settlement between two (and only two) opposing groups when a change is proposed. There is little or no mention made of change management per se. Further, it's theories and suggestions focus very little on questions such as, "how do I get people to accept and support the change that I am proposing," and rather much more on understanding when resistance to your idea is present. Frankly, I know when resistence is present, I'm more interested in what to do with it.
Finally, the book is poorly written, in my opinion. It often wanders from the subject at hand to make obsure references - e.g., Groucho Marx movies and the third century emperor Pyrrhus. These references are distracting, and inappropriate in a book designed for corporate managers who have little time to read as it is.
Recipe is a Masterpiece--Best Book I've Read!.......2000-02-28
This is the "best" book I've read! With "change" the norm, you must know how to lead the change and we don't lead dollars or materials--it is people--as Tom Peters puts it--"people are our only asset". The author does an outstanding job of walking you through how to make change a reality--dealing head on--with people. I remember the authors recipe with the letters "PEP". Changes force an individual into a "protection" mode (which is natural), but you and I must understand that the protection wall is nothing buy "energy" (but it is critical to understand the energy is not positive nor negative--just energy). Next is "paradox"--you and I must continously engage in dialogue to help people understand why the change is necessary--thus continuously engaging the protective energy. The paradox is the more you engage the protective energy the more it becomes "positive"--leading to the individuals support of change. I have used this recipe and it works--people do not wake up in the morning--planning on how to oppose the future--they just want to understand. I read two books a week, and I've shared the contents of this book with many. THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ!
best book on change I know.......1999-07-20
As one who has recently written a book ("Difficult Converstions"), I'm aware that reader reviews sometimes come off as being written by a well-meaing friend or colleague. So I want to be clear that I've never even heard of Rick Maurer. I got his book off Amazon.com, along with about ten other books on corporate change. Mr. Maurer's book is the one I find the most compelling. More than any of the others, this book tries to adjust our relationship to resistance - to see it as natural, to engage with it, to treat resistors with respect, honesty, and to listen with genuine curiosity, thus turning resistors into legitimate partners in the process of change. It's the only book on change that I recommend to my own organizational clients. Congrats, Rick, on a terrific book, and thanks.
Helpful from the moment I picked it up!.......1999-01-07
Many books have been written about change and how to do it. This one is different. It explores how to deal with the natural and inevitable resistance to change. Many organizations have already undertaken massive change efforts, wrenching processes which have left people reeling -- and resistent. Rick's book focuses on how to use the power of resistance to build support for change in organizations. It explores the nature of resistance, how to recognize it, and what to do about it. It is full of practical, immediately useful techniques and tips for ensuring successful and enduring change. Must read!
