Alligators breeding in the sewers of New York City is an urban legend; thousands of people living in the tunnels beneath New York is not. Ms. Toth has written a compelling, compassionate and extraordinary documentary about the "Mole People."
Book Description
This book is about the thousands of people who live in the subway, railroad, and sewage tunnels of New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Living beneath the horizon.......2007-09-30
The 'mole people' are not a singular group of people: their reasons for living in the tunnels are varied, and the degree to which the tunnels constitute 'home' also differs. In the world depicted in Ms Toth's book, there are individuals, collectives and communities existing in (largely) man-made spaces built for other purposes. In this world (as in all worlds), we see triumph, ingenuity, despair and different levels of belonging.
I think that Ms Toth did a good job of presenting what she saw and understood. All realities are relative.

The Mole People.......2007-09-10
This book was an eye-oener for me. I had no idea so many people lived in the underground of NYC. I also was interested to know that many of thes people are satisfied with their life below the city.
Another world exists beneath the streets of NYC.......2007-09-07
The Mole People provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of society's castaways, people who, for various reasons, chose or were forced to live in the catacombs beneath New York City. Toth describes the society that has evolved under the streets, and details the everyday lives of the misfits, outcasts, and dropouts who inhabit that subterranean world. The vignettes she presents are moving, disturbing and thought provoking, and many times just plain spooky. For instance, Toth often describes her amazement at how quietly the tunnel dwellers moved--most approached so silently that she didn't sense their presence until they were only inches away.
Toth's narrative is gripping--I often felt as if I were reading a suspense novel rather than a work of non-fiction. A chapter midway through the book, entitled "Dark Angel," is especially intriguing. In it, Toth describes a tunnel dweller who many swear is the devil himself. Her description of the man "who knows what will scare you" evoked memories of my first encounter with Randall Flagg in Stephen King's apocalyptic novel The Stand. Toth's description, however, is more frightening because it is based on grim reality.
interesting subject, okay book.......2007-07-24
The subject matter of this book is very interesting, but it is just an okay book. The main problem with the book is that it is repetative, telling parts of the same story over and over again. It also references individual "stories" in the book before they are told, leaving you wondering whether you missed something. However, the book is still interesting; it just leaves you wishing you had a little more.
Opens your eyes whether you want to or not............2007-06-10
This slim volume is original research that is brave, refreshing and depressing. Brave because she descended deep into the guts of New York City which is very dangerous, refreshing because she did her research thoroughly and told it like she experienced it, and depressing because so much of what goes on down there IS an escape from some of the worst aspects of modern life--as bad as it is in the tunnels, there is a sense of community, family, and cooperation that is fading topside. As short as the book is, it took me many nights to finish it: I couldn't really put it down, but I could only digest a little at a time. Instead of fostering morbid fascination, it ellicits compassion and understanding, even a feeling of solidarity with the Mole People....
Book Description
Called "a first-rate spy story" (Entertainment Weekly), The Bureau and the Mole is the sensational New York Times best-seller that tells the inside story of FBI counterintelligence agent Robert Philip Hanssen, a seemingly all-American boy who would become the perfect traitor, jeopardizing America's national security for over twenty years by selling top-secret information to the Russians. Drawing from a wide variety of sources in the FBI, the Justice Department, the White House, and the intelligence community, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David A. Vise tells the story of how Hanssen employed the very sources and methods his own nation had entrusted to him in a devious game of deceit -- simply because he had something to prove. Vise also interweaves the narrative of how FBI director Louis B. Freeh led the government's desperate search for its betrayer among its own ranks, from the false leads, to the near misses, to its ultimate, shocking conclusion. Fascinating, gripping, and provocative, The Bureau and the Mole is a harrowing tale of how one man's treachery rocked a fraternity built on fidelity, bravery, and integrity -- and how the dedicated perseverance of another brought him to justice. "Absorbing ... Vise's account of Mr. Hanssen's road to becoming a double agent is fascinating." -- Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times "Brisk, well documented ... a penetrating study of the villain and a gripping summary of the appalling evidence against him." -- Charles McCarry, The Wall Street Journal "A carefully researched and compelling account, with a startling bombshell." -- David W. Marston, The Baltimore Sun "Intelligent and well researched." -- Allen Weinstein, The Washington Post Book World
Customer Reviews:
Read a better book.......2007-09-30
This book doesn't compare with David Wise's book "Spy, The Inside Story of How the FBI's Robert Hanssen Betrayed America." There seems to be a lot of assumptions and conjecture's in the Vise book. Wise has much better sources.
Good Book!.......2007-09-27
The book provided background on not only Robert Hanssen, but also the individuals associated with the job. I enjoyed the book very much.
Frightening!.......2007-07-26
A frightening look into the mind and works of a socially inadequate FBI Agent who betrayed the American people, trading their safety over cash and diamond. The most disturbing fact was his fantasy of retiring from the FBI and move to Moscow and train future spies. The author did an excellent job in telling the lives of a deceitful Hanssen and of a dedicated Director Freeh.
Undoubtedly written by a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist.

Robert Hanssen.......2007-05-12
I felt the book was very interesting. It has a good narative form.
I do feel, however, it could have been less graphic on some of Robert's home life. I did read it after seeing the movie "Breach". The book's characterizations of the two main personalities added interest. The author has done a good job with a difficult subject
Fascinating Book.......2007-03-15
This book was a page turner. The author built a psychological profile of Robert Hansesn as well as reported historical facts, to try to give us some insight into his motivation, as well as placed him in a historical context. How could someone who loved this country and was devoted to law enforcement become such a terrible traitor and cause the death of so many people? It gives an amazing account.
Book Description
When the Spanish viceroy comes for an unscheduled visit to the monastery, the cook goes into a frenzy. What will they feed this important ambassador to the king? Carlos, the orphan boy who works in the kitchen, tries to stay out of the way as lunch is hastily prepared, but his curiosity gets the best of him. His eagerness results in a moment of crisis, followed by what Brother Roberto can only assume is a miracle. This story, inspired by the Mexican folk tradition, explains the origins of mole, the popular national dish that combines chocolate with turkey, spices, and nuts.

A Delightful Introduction to Spanish .......2007-03-02
I read this delightful folk tale to my two daughters aged four and seven. They were excited to learn a few words of Spanish and now say "delicioso and rico" when they like a dish. We are planning on a trip to a Mexican restaurant to try some mole. I highly recommend this book.

Carlos.......2007-02-28
I am 12 years old and I read this book to my younger sister, she absalutly loved it! She said she liked it because it had a happy ending and there were some Spanish words in it. Even though I am not in this books targeted age range, I think it is an awsome book, too.
Holy Mole.......2007-02-27
This is a wonderful fable about the origin of mole sauce. The author captures the spirit of the little boy underfoot in the kitchen perfectly. Children who spend time in the kitchen with parents will have a special interest.

A wonderful gift for an older sibling.......2003-10-14
Rosie and the Mole is a wonderful gift for an older sibling who is celebrating the arrival of a baby brother. The brit milah is an often confusing celebration for adults, and even more so for children. This gentle story with some really sweet humor will make an older sibling feel special and included in the celebration. Highly recommended!
ICK!.......2002-09-07
This book glorifies the unnescessary and cruel practice of genital cutting. Not suitable for children.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!.......2001-05-20
Jewish books are cool but when I read this one it was one of my favorites. Its a great book for kids under the ages of 10. Judy Silverman is my librarian at Temple Shalom, my sunday/hebrew school. I hope she sees her first 5 star review sometime!

As he snuggles into bed, he thinks about his dream of traveling the world, and before he knows it, that's just what he does! Strangely enough, Mole's cold symptoms are reflected in his journey through underground tunnels to the frigid North Pole, the sweltering desert, the tallest mountains where the air is think and dry, the deep jungle, so steamy and humid. By journey's end, Mole's cold is cured and he has discovered that there's no place like home -- especially when it's filled with good friends.

Customer Reviews:
Not a Classroom in a book. More like a presentation........2007-01-25
This book is not about creating PDF documents from scratch. It is about converting an already existing document into a PDF file. It focuses on converting Microsoft Office files (Windows) to PDF, converting Microsoft Office files (MAC) to PDF, converting other files to PDF, converting paper forms to PDF, etc. It also focuses on how to combine multiple forms into a single document.
It presents simple views for addressing tasks and does not go into much detail. It shows one way of doing things and does not cover any exceptions or problems a user might encounter.
The three pages in the book on capturing data and handling it after is primitive and not useful instruction.
It does not show how to create a document from scratch. The chapter on using the Designer is only 50 pages and is also a high level view.
Introductory.......2006-10-05
One hopes that the publisher of an application would make the best author for it, and while that is not always the case, this one did not disappoint. This book assumes no prior knowledge and walks the reader meticulously through all the features of Acrobat Standard and Professional for both Windows and OS X. This is an introductory book and so experienced folks should look elsewhere.
The chapters correlate to the lessons on the included CD with screen shots from both OS X and Windows to demonstrate the consistency between the two interfaces. There are chapters/lessons for technical drawing, professional publishing, security features like digital signatures and PDF certification, embedding of multimedia in presentations, and how to generate PDFs from scanned pages or any application with a Print function.
Forms design and creation are major uses of Acrobat, for which there are two chapters - one on the built-in forms tools and another on the more advanced Adobe LiveCycle Designer which offers a richer design and development environment. Adobe LiveCycle Designer is currently only included with the Windows version of Acrobat Professional, but a trial version can be downloaded from Adobe. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Classroom in a Book is aptly named and provides a good introduction to Acrobat.
Adobe's website is a complementary source for eSeminars, tips and tutorials, user forums, developer links, and more.
Very nice book.......2006-02-28
It is a comprehensive step by step book. I liked the fact that it also included alternative instructions for the instances when a Mac would have different commands.
Good book, but not at all if you prepare for the exam.......2005-12-30
The book was overall a good book with all what you need to know about Adobe Acrobat. I am preparing for the exam and the book does not cover 75% of the test. Unfortunately Adobe did not think of this and decided to make it very hard for us. Microsoft on the other hand has many books that cover the topics for their exams. Wish Adobe would learn that one thing from them....
Good book for beginners.......2005-08-29
I found the tutorials easy to use and thought they taught how to use Acrobat very well. Some items may get repetitive if you have purchased other CS2 books, but I recommend it for anyone that purchases Adobe Acrobat CS2.
